From King Solomon To Ian Smith: Rhodesian Alternate Histories Of Zimbabwe, Edward Guimont
From King Solomon To Ian Smith: Rhodesian Alternate Histories Of Zimbabwe, Edward Guimont
Doctoral Dissertations
In the eleventh century CE, the Shona people of Central Africa built the city of Great Zimbabwe, an administrative center and royal home. Connected to the Indian Ocean gold trade, it would become the largest pre-colonial city in sub-Saharan Africa. However, it entered into decline and was ultimately abandoned by the sixteenth century – when the first Portuguese expeditions came in contact with the region. The fact that this city entered into decline just as Europeans encountered it set it up to become the center of a number of fantastical legends about its origins, typically linking it with the Biblical …

Spiritual Rituals Of Chinese Ink Painting: The Suggestions Of Shitao, Eva Kit Wah Man
Spiritual Rituals Of Chinese Ink Painting: The Suggestions Of Shitao, Eva Kit Wah Man
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Ritual has an essential connection with art. This article suggests that the study on Shitao has significance in proposing a ritual theory of art for two reasons. First, textual analysis on his treatise on ink painting, Hua-pu, demonstrates that an artist is/should be involved in the interconnectedness of what he or she depicts. This involvement requires penetration into the primordial intuition towards what he or she perceives and has an ethical imperative to use the artist’s talent conferred by heaven. Second, Shitao’s artistic practice is interpreted as a form of rites that are a reaction to the sociopolitical changes …
Monsters In Society: Alterity, Transgression, And The Use Of The Past In Medieval Iceland, Rebecca Merkelbach
Monsters In Society: Alterity, Transgression, And The Use Of The Past In Medieval Iceland, Rebecca Merkelbach
Northern Medieval World
Dragons, giants, and the monsters of learned discourse are rarely encountered in the Sagas of Icelanders, and therefore, the general teratological focus on physical monstrosity yields only limited results when applied to them. This, however, does not equal an absence of monstrosity — it only means that monstrosity is conceived of differently. This book shifts the view of monstrosity from the physical to the social, accounting for the unique social circumstances presented in the Íslendingasögur and demonstrating how closely interwoven the social and the monstrous are in this genre. Employing literary and cultural theory as well as anthropological and historical …

Spatiotemporal Analysis Of Lake Water Quality Indicators On Small Lakes, Lake Bloomington And Evergreen Lake In Central Illinois, Using Satellite Remote Sensing, Gare Ambrose-Igho
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the use of Sentinel-2 satellite to determine the spatiotemporal patterns of lake water quality indicators (e.g. chlorophyll a) in Lake Bloomington and Evergreen Lake. Lake water quality issues related to algal blooms is a serious problem in basins with abundant agricultural lands causing harmful effects to freshwater ecosystems such as pollution of beaches, taste and odor problems in drinking water, depletion of oxygen levels causing fish kills and the issue of water exceeding safe drinking water standards. Developing monitoring techniques using various water quality indicators of algal blooms is crucial. In this project, remote sensing and field …

Decolonizing In Unexpected Places, Floridalma Boj Lopez, Sandy Grande
Decolonizing In Unexpected Places, Floridalma Boj Lopez, Sandy Grande
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Our “Notes from the Field” article focuses on our engagement with Hacer Escuela/Inventing School, a project of West Chester University that bridges critical theory and the Global South to re-think pedagogical practices and theoretical frameworks in education. By reviewing the discussions that occurred over the course of the conference and our contributions around teaching teachers about Indigenous issues in a settler colonial and anti-immigrant context, we analyze schools as settler institutions and sites of ongoing Indigenous dispossession. We critique rights discourses that often position multicultural education as an opportunity for inclusion without having to unpack that inclusion, which thereby functions …
Learning To Think In The Language Of Strangers: Indigenous Education In A Colonized And Globalized Pacific, Konai Helu Thaman
Learning To Think In The Language Of Strangers: Indigenous Education In A Colonized And Globalized Pacific, Konai Helu Thaman
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This notes from the field article is about my personal, educational, and professional journeys as an Indigenous woman living and working in the small island states of Oceania. My own story describes the struggles that continue today among many young Indigenous students, be they in school or in higher education institutions with structures and processes that do not take their cultural backgrounds or identities into consideration. The results are often damaging both to the students, as well as to the institutions themselves. However, in this work, I advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledges in education, as I have for …

Indigenous Women’S Approaches To Educational Leadership: Creating Space For Indigenous Women In Education, Robin Starr Zape-Tah-Hol-Ah Minthorn, Heather J. Shotton
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This article addresses the problematic deficiency in research and scholarship that centers Indigenous women’s voices in educational leadership. As Indigenous women scholars, we engaged a qualitative study that involved Indigenous women leaders from across the United States, and our discussion in this work focuses on the perspectives of Indigenous women working in education. We first provide a current snapshot of Indigenous women in postsecondary education and review preliminary theories on Indigenous leadership. We highlight cultural, social, and political factors that influence Indigenous women educational leaders, and we conclude with recommendations for the cultivation of future Indigenous women leaders.

Cherokee Perspectives On Indigenous Rights Education (Ire) And Indigenous Participatory Action Research (Ipar) As Decolonizing Praxis, Tiffanie Hardbarger
International Journal of Human Rights Education
In response to the long and harmful legacy of extractive research done on Indigenous peoples and the erasure and devaluation of Indigenous knowledge, pedagogy, and lifeways within Western educational settings, many educators and scholars are seeking to implement decolonizing methodologies into research and educational strategies. Utilizing research conducted alongside Cherokee students during an undergraduate/graduate course (2016-2018), this paper explores how the use of Indigenous Rights Education (IRE) in tandem with Indigenous Participatory Action Research (IPAR) provide pathways to navigate the difficult work of engaging with the underlying epistemological tensions that undergird U.S. settler society. In this article, a female Cherokee/EuroAmerican …

Overcoming Silence And Sorrow: Sami Language Revitalization In Sweden, Patricia Fjellgren, Leena Huss
International Journal of Human Rights Education
Our paper focuses on new ways to address silence and feelings of sadness surrounding language and cultural loss in Indigenous contexts, sometimes resulting in deep inter-generational trauma. As a consequence of two Council of Europe conventions ratified by Sweden, Indigenous and minority language maintenance and revitalization was included in the Human Rights commitments of the Swedish state in 2000. Work in these fields led in 2010 to the establishment of the Sami Language Center with the assignment to find new ways to ascertain that all the Sami languages spoken in Sweden would survive and develop as part of the Swedish …

ETSU Faculty Works
Heatwave studies typically estimate heat-related mortality and morbidity risks at the city level; few have addressed the heterogeneous risks by socioeconomic status (SES) and location within a city. This study aimed to examine the impacts of heatwaves on mortality outcomes in Memphis, Tennessee, a Mid-South metropolitan area top-ranked in morbidity and poverty rates, and to investigate the effects of SES and urbanicity. Mortality data were retrieved from the death records in 2008–2017, and temperature data from the Applied Climate Information System. Heatwave days were defined based on four temperature metrics. Heatwave effects on daily total-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality were …
Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Readiness For Teaching In A 1:1 Classroom, Laura Jeffery
Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Readiness For Teaching In A 1:1 Classroom, Laura Jeffery
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
With the emergence of digital technology as a primary means to communicate and learn, it is imperative that educators become proficient in utilizing 21stcentury digital tools and apps. However, research has shown that preservice teachers' levels of readiness for teaching in 1:1 classrooms are not sufficient. Preservice teachers need to increase their proficiency with technology, both hardware and software, in order to maximize student achievement and prepare their future students for a wide array of post-secondary options.
This study examined the perceptions that preservice teachers held regarding their readiness to step into 1:1 classrooms upon completion of their …

Social media such as Twitter is increasingly being used as an effective platform to observe human behaviors in disastrous events. However, uneven social media use among different groups of population in different regions could lead to biased consequences and affect disaster resilience. This paper studies the Twitter use during 2017 Hurricane Harvey in 76 counties in Texas and Louisiana. We seek to answer a fundamental question: did social-geographical disparities of Twitter use exist during the three phases of emergency management (preparedness, response, recovery)? We employed a Twitter data mining framework to process the data and calculate two indexes: Ratio and …

This pilot study reports the baseline data of a prospective longitudinal study examining the educational achievements of grandchildren being raised by grandparents in parent absent homes. The baseline data includes 117 grandchildren in grades K-12 in two school districts in a southeastern state. School records reporting 2,230 grades were examined for grade point average (GPA) and attendance for K-12 and conduct in grades K-5. The majority of the grandchildren achieved A/B averages. There were no significant differences between gender, pre-care experiences, placement by welfare agencies or paternal involvement across years of schooling. GPAs were lower in the grandchildren who had …
Religious Identities And Allegiances In The Transformation Of Ukrainian National Consciousness 2013-2018, Julian Hayda
Religious Identities And Allegiances In The Transformation Of Ukrainian National Consciousness 2013-2018, Julian Hayda
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Although the 2013-2014 Euromaidan revolution in Ukraine was an expression of Ukrainian sovereignty and agency, a number of issues like the war in Donbas, dispute over Crimea, debilitating corruption, and the worst economic crisis since independence have left Ukrainians disenfranchised and seeking change elsewhere. The most visible vehicle for this was Ukrainians' turn to particular religious institutions, revisiting religious identity as an expression of agency. While Ukrainian state democracy has struggled, Ukrainians are democratizing vis-à-vis religious allegiance. This culminated, in part, in the 2018 decision to combine two of Ukraine's Orthodox Churches into a united Church recognized for the first …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Soft-sediment deformational structures associated with paleoseismicity (e.g., planar clastic dikes) exist within Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde Group strata in the Laramide Elk Basin anticline, northern Bighorn Basin (Wyoming, USA). Retrodeformation of the Elk Basin anticline to a horizontal Mesaverde Group position indicates that all basement offset is removed and that clastic dikes exhibit a dominant northeast trend. The trend of clastic dikes corresponds to the interpreted northeast-southwest direction of early Laramide layer-parallel shortening, suggesting that the development of clastic dikes recorded initiation of basement deformation and Laramide tectonism. To determine the timing of clastic dike development, we present zircon U-Pb geochronology …
