Waters Of The State, Joseph Regalia, Noah D. Hall Jan 2019

Waters Of The State, Joseph Regalia, Noah D. Hall

Scholarly Works

This article explores the "waters of the state" in three parts. First, we look to what the states say for themselves about water in their constitutions and statutes. This is not intended as a comprehensive survey, but rather a thorough sampling of the diversity in how states assert themselves over territorial water. There is a tremendous range in the scope of state assertions, in terms of both hydrologic (what waters are included) and legal scope (what states can and should do with water). The diversity and distinctions turn out to be of limited importance, though, at least on the ground. …

Isolation And Characterization Of Soil Bacteria From Radium Springs, Ga, And Analysis Of Antibiotic Secretions Under Various Conditions, Vashishtha D. Patel Jan 2019

Isolation And Characterization Of Soil Bacteria From Radium Springs, Ga, And Analysis Of Antibiotic Secretions Under Various Conditions, Vashishtha D. Patel

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Since the discovery of the first antibiotics, they have been a cornerstone of medical treatment for bacterial infections. With the evolution of resistance to these existing agents, it is becoming increasingly important to find novel antibiotics to maintain the level of care of modern medicine.

The Small World Initiative created at Yale University aims to tackle this problem by crowdsourcing the study of antibiotics that may be present in soil and sediment in different environments. According to the Small World Initiative, over two thirds of antibiotics originate from soil bacteria or fungi.

We aim to characterize the bacteria in …

Three-Dimensional Passive‐Source Reverse Time Migration Of Convert Waves: A New Method To Image The Earth’S Discontinuities, Jiahang Li Jan 2019

Three-Dimensional Passive‐Source Reverse Time Migration Of Convert Waves: A New Method To Image The Earth’S Discontinuities, Jiahang Li

Open Access Dissertations

At seismic discontinuities in the crust and mantle, part of the compressional-wave energy converts to shear wave, and vice versa. These converted waves have been widely used in receiver function (RF) studies to image discontinuity structures in the Earth. While generally successful, the conventional RF method has its limitations and is suited mostly to flat or gently dipping structures. Among the efforts to overcome the limitations of the conventional RF method is the development of the wave-‐theory-‐based, passive-‐source reverse-‐time migration (PS-RTM) for imaging complex seismic discontinuities and scatters. To date, PS-RTM has been implemented only in 2D in the Cartesian …

Constructing Transgression: Criminality In Experimental Literature, Charles Kell Jan 2019

Constructing Transgression: Criminality In Experimental Literature, Charles Kell

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines integral, challenging contemporary poetry and fiction, and its relationship to notions of the criminal in multiple guises. The present focus on “criminal” excavates not only its literal meaning - the nature of crime, and its specific relation to penal law - but also brings to light how the “criminal” affects the construction of fiction and poetry, and the lives of various individuals (speakers) within the chosen texts. Intricately tied with the criminal are practices that transgress, and this study will also locate specific creations where poets and novelists construct transgressions that challenge contemporary ideas of narrative and …

Hell As ‘Heterotopia’: Edification And Interpretation From Enoch To The Apocalypses Of Peter And Paul, Meghan Henning Jan 2019

Hell As ‘Heterotopia’: Edification And Interpretation From Enoch To The Apocalypses Of Peter And Paul, Meghan Henning

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

Otherworldly journeys are a challenging object of study for the contemporary historian because they do not seem to resonate with the post-enlightenment worldview that bolsters scientific academic inquiry. And yet, even if we do not imagine heaven and hell in the same way that ancient thinkers did, the impulse to create “otherworlds” is still very much alive. With every new technology humans open the possibility of new spaces with complex relationships to the spaces that already exist. Here, before we think about the reception of 1 Enoch in the apocalypses, I would like to take a moment to propose a …

Sedimentological And Mineralogical Characteristics Of Red Soil In South Pirin Mountains(Southwest Bulgaria), Rossitza Kenderova, Ahinora Baltakova, Marlena Yaneva

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The northernmost derivation of the Mediterranean climatic influence and the wide distribution of carbonate rocks are factors that could explain red soils distribution in the lands of Southern Bulgaria. However, due to the mainly mountainous landscape, red soils can be found only on certain spots in Bulgaria. One of the most typical examples of red soil can be found in the lands of Nova Lovcha Village in Bulgaria, but this area was not studied in detail due to its border position. In this study, the catena principle was used to estimate the parental material and slope drainage relationships as factors …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study presents the late Quaternary evolution of the southern Marmara region in northwestern Turkey and discusses the suitability of the area for settlements. It is based on interpretation of sediment analyses together with radiometric dates obtained from drilling cores. As three-fourths of the southern Marmara region (ca. 30,000 km2) is covered by the Susurluk Drainage Basin (SDB), the study focuses on this basin. The SDB has a concave surface morphology dipping northward, with highlands in the south (ca. 1300-1700 m a.s.l.) and lowlands in the north (ca. 0-250 a.s.l.). Lake Manyas, Lake Ulubat, and south-north flowing rivers, together with …

The Early Eocene Ekmekçi Granodiorite Porphyry In The Karacabey Region(Sakarya Zone, Nw Turkey), Gürsel Sunal, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç, Gülteki̇n Topuz, Aral Okay, Thomas Zack

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Ekmekçi granodiorite porphyry is a unit in the E-W trending, postcollisional Eocene magmatic rocks of northern Anatolia. It occurs as a relatively small stock, but represents a link between plutonic and volcanic rocks. This Early Eocene granodiorite porphyry intruded into the Upper Triassic rocks of the Karakaya complex in the Sakarya Zone. In this study we present geochemical and zircon U-Pb LA-ICP-MS age data to contribute to understanding the Early Tertiary postcollisional tectonic setting of NW Anatolia. The granodiorite porphyry includes plagioclase, quartz, hornblende, K-feldspar, biotite, and minor zircon, apatite, sphene, and opaque minerals. The stock displays medium-K calc-alkaline …

Perceptions Of Forest Change In The Governmental Region Of Kaffrine, Senegal, Rhiley E. Allbee Jan 2019

Perceptions Of Forest Change In The Governmental Region Of Kaffrine, Senegal, Rhiley E. Allbee

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Sénégal is a semi-arid West African country with a diverse ethnic makeup and a rapidly growing population that is largely rural, predominantly employed within the agricultural sector, and heavily reliant on the harvesting of forest products within state owned forests where populations have usufruct rights. The country experienced significant changes in land cover throughout the 20th century due to a series of major droughts and large expansions in agriculture. These changes were partially concentrated throughout the region of Kaffrine, where the wooded savannas of the early 20th century were systematically replaced by agriculture and converted to a shrub …

The Archaeology Of The Postindustrial: Spatial Data Infrastructures For Studying The Past In The Present, Daniel Trepal Jan 2019

The Archaeology Of The Postindustrial: Spatial Data Infrastructures For Studying The Past In The Present, Daniel Trepal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Postindustrial urban landscapes are large-scale, complex manifestations of the past in the present in the form of industrial ruins and archaeological sites, decaying infrastructure, and adaptive reuse; ongoing processes of postindustrial redevelopment often conspire to conceal the toxic consequences of long-term industrial activity. Understanding these phenomena is an essential step in building a sustainable future; despite this, the study of the postindustrial is still new, and requires interdisciplinary connections that remain either unexplored or underexplored. Archaeologists have begun to turn their attention to the modern industrial era and beyond. This focus carries the potential to deliver new understandings of the …

Gendered Recreational Fisheries Management And North American Natural Resource Policy, Erin Burkett Jan 2019

Gendered Recreational Fisheries Management And North American Natural Resource Policy, Erin Burkett

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation applies feminist theory to investigate women’s participation in wildlife-based recreation and how natural resource management organizations conduct stakeholder engagement in a North American context. Gendered social processes, including norms and expectations, as well as gendered cultures, can constrain women’s participation in recreation through social sanctions and disenfranchisement. Gender and leisure scholars have studied these dynamics in sport and leisure contexts, but how individuals negotiate these constraints is understudied in a wildlife-based recreation context. Social constructions of gender also contribute to imbalances of power within formal natural resource management organizations and influence how stakeholder engagement policies and programs are …

Fighting The "Three Evils": A Structural Analysis Of Counter-Terrorism Legal Architecture In China, Enshen Li

Emory International Law Review

In the aftermath of September 11 attacks, China has not been immune to the global trend of destructive terrorism. However, China's perceptions of terrorism and legal responses to it greatly diverge from those of other countries. This Article first seeks to understand the cause, source, and impact of terrorist threats in China, known as 'Three Evils''terrorism, extremism, and separatism, through a critical inquiry of the country's ethnic and religious policies. It then proceeds to delineate China's legal framework for combating the 'Three Evils' to explore the cultural characteristics of the government's approach against these rising threats. Tracing the evolution of …

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This work centered on the Creating Creators Cinema Project (CCCP), a for-profit organization that works with K-12 school districts in California to integrate student filmmaking into core subjects. The qualitative case study documented the experiences of CCCP’s founders, the teaching artists who mentor filmmaking youth, and the students participating in year-long projects, providing a “thick description” of the creation, implementation, and impact of the program in a high school setting. The research addressed the dearth of arts programs in urban schools and their connection to representation in arts fields, particularly filmmaking. The study utilized three frameworks: Critical Pedagogy, Constructivism, and …

Enforcing Employment Standards For Migrant Agricultural Workers In Ontario, Canada: Exposing Underexplored Layers Of Vulnerability, Leah F. Vosko, Eric Tucker, Rebecca Casey Jan 2019

Enforcing Employment Standards For Migrant Agricultural Workers In Ontario, Canada: Exposing Underexplored Layers Of Vulnerability, Leah F. Vosko, Eric Tucker, Rebecca Casey

Articles & Book Chapters

Over 50,000 migrant agricultural workers are employed in Canada each year, almost half of whom are destined for the Province of Ontario. These workers are among the most vulnerable in the country and therefore most in need of labour and employment law protection. One important source of employment rights in Ontario is the Employment Standards Act (ESA), which establishes basic minimum entitlements in areas such as wages, working time, and vacations and leaves. Drawing on an analysis of the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s(MOL’s) Employment Standards Information System (ESIS), a previously untapped administrative data source containing information on all of Ontario’s …

Environmental Justice And The Hesitant Embrace Of Human Rights, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2019

Environmental Justice And The Hesitant Embrace Of Human Rights, Dayna Nadine Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter explores some of the tensions inherent in employing ‘rights strategies’ in environmental justice movements. Using the example of a judicial review application brought by Indigenous environmental justice activists in Canada demonstrates the symbolic power of using rights-based language for environmental justice, but also underscores the serious procedural, logistical and resource barriers that frustrate these groups in their attempts to deploy litigation tactics. Legal scholars need to think critically about ‘rights-talk’ and confront the hard questions about its utility for advancing environmental justice. In working with communities, we must learn to listen to what communities want before we default …

The Louisiana Purchase: Indian And American Sovereignty In The Missouri Watershed, Kent Mcneil Jan 2019

The Louisiana Purchase: Indian And American Sovereignty In The Missouri Watershed, Kent Mcneil

Articles & Book Chapters

Like a historical mantra repeated time and again, it is asserted that the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. As this assertion takes for granted that the Purchase included the entire Missouri watershed, it rests on the assumption that France had a valid title thereto because, as a matter of common sense and international law, France could only convey title to territory that it actually owned. But what basis is there for the assumption that France had sovereign title to the vast territory drained by the Missouri River that stretches from the Mississippi River to the Rocky …

Looking More Into Our Economic Class: Makings Of A Standpoint, Jessica Eylem Jan 2019

Looking More Into Our Economic Class: Makings Of A Standpoint, Jessica Eylem

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Everyone has their own experiences that lead them to their own feminist consciousness. It creates who we are, both as a person and as a feminist. My own experiences in life have led me to consider the standpoints of class within our society, especially within academia. From the beginning of my academic career, I have been told to hide the social class that I am in to fit in with those around me. Academia is based off of appearance, perpetuated by the glass ceiling and everyone is expected to behave and act in a certain way to succeed. Through a …

Equitable Engagement In Stem: Using E-Textiles To Challenge The Positioning Of Non-Dominant Girls In School Science, Kristin A. Searle, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Janet Breitenstein

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper examines how working with sewable, programmable electronics embedded in textiles (e-textiles) impacted the self-perceptions and actions of two middle school girls from non-dominant communities as they navigated their place within science class. Using analytic induction (Erickson, 1986), we explore the phenomena around their experiences and the influence of their teachers’ perceptions. Findings indicate that the personalizable nature of e-textiles created a meaningful opportunity for students to engage in science class in a new way.

"I Don't": A Look At Attitudes Towards Delaying Marriage In A Traditional Community, Abbi Halkola

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This sociological research study was designed to explore the attitudes of women in their late twenties and thirties about marriage and how geography (physical and sociological) impacts decisions. This research looks at women in a politically and religiously conservative area in the central Midwest. The research is meant to be exploratory in nature in order to grasp an understanding of how not only educational and career aspirations affect attitudes toward marriage but also at how leisure activities and the sexual revolution play a major role in the desire to delay marriage. Interviews were conducted to expose women’s attitudes, opinions, choices, …

Charles Horton Cooley And The Social Gospel Influence, Taylor Emerson Styes Jan 2019

Charles Horton Cooley And The Social Gospel Influence, Taylor Emerson Styes

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Charles Horton Cooley was one of the fundamental American intellectuals of the early twentieth century, primarily due to his social theories that involved the connection between individuals and society. This thesis demonstrates this connection with the influence of the Social Gospel movement as a basis for Cooley’s evolving social organization theories that remained important for the next generation of sociologists. The last stage of this thesis examines the transition away from the Social Gospel influence through Cooley’s organic social process, while Cooley retained parallels with the Social Gospel.

Debunking The False Dichotomy: Developing And Applying Trans Quantcrit At The Intersection Of Trans/Non-Binary Identities And Religious, Secular, And Spiritual Engagement In College, Kate Curley Jan 2019

Debunking The False Dichotomy: Developing And Applying Trans Quantcrit At The Intersection Of Trans/Non-Binary Identities And Religious, Secular, And Spiritual Engagement In College, Kate Curley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Discrimination towards people who identify as trans/non-binary (NB) is still extremely well documented and pervasive across many different demographics. Discussions on religious, secular, or spiritual (RSS) identities and trans/NB identities are often fraught with difficult conflicts between the two. In student affairs published standards, practitioners are expected to serve “regardless” of gender in RSS programs and “regardless” of religion in LGBTQ+ programming. This study sought to explore how RSS campus climate influences students’ attitudes towards trans/NB people and how trans/NB experience their RSS campus climate. Informed by critical theory and using critical consciousness and ally identity development conceptual frameworks, I …
