Preparing For Climate Change In New York City - Geographic Information Systems As A Valuable Tool For Natural Hazard Management, Amy Carrillo
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper addresses the impact of climate change in New York City. Chapter 1 focuses on details found in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report on the impact of climate change worldwide. At the city level, this paper analyzes New York City’s Risk Landscape: A Guide to Hazard Mitigation and New York City Panel on Climate Change 2019 Report, which provides data on how climate change will impact NYC, specifically. Chapter 2 explores the history of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its use in mitigation and conservation practices over time. Chapter 3 studies how GIS has been …
God, Land, Identity: Divine Fluidity And A Spatial Ecclesiology In West Africa, Clement Kanu
God, Land, Identity: Divine Fluidity And A Spatial Ecclesiology In West Africa, Clement Kanu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African theology is burdened with a major problem of identity, which stems from the lack of African history and memory in African theology. African theologians in the face of the delicate dilemma of creating a theology that is both African and Christian, have fallen into the epistemological compulsion to impose western Christian theological categories as foundational to African theology. Inculturation thus presupposes the already alien space on which the structures of the present ecclesiology is anchored. The result is a peripheral inculturation, a consumer ecclesiology, always seeking to solve its local pastoral problems in accordance with alien incongruous codes and …
The Third Wave Of Graduate Labor Unions, Anthony Walker
The Third Wave Of Graduate Labor Unions, Anthony Walker
Theses - ALL
A 2016 NLRB decision that made graduate labor unions legal has contributed significantly to a wave of graduate organizing, continuing a 50-year history of graduate unions. This research investigates this contemporary wave of graduate unionization using two papers, which take a theoretical and an empirical approach respectively. The first paper uses a Marxist analysis to connect the narrow antagonism between graduates and management with larger-scale phenomena that involves other workers too, such as the growing population of contingent academic workers. It describes how corporate interests have influenced higher education and administrators have become managers of workers in order to help …
Moving Beyond The State: An Imperative For Genocide Prediction, Hollie Nyseth Brehm
Moving Beyond The State: An Imperative For Genocide Prediction, Hollie Nyseth Brehm
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Studies of the onset of genocide and accompanying early warning and forecasting efforts have focused almost exclusively on states. This article suggests that genocide prediction must move beyond a purely state-centric approach. Specifically, I suggest three major avenues that will refine and complement existing research and related prediction efforts. These include 1) theorizing and analyzing non-state actors who commit genocide, 2) engaging in conflict-centered approaches, and 3) addressing the onset and triggers of genocide within subnational spaces. I conclude with a discussion of how these three avenues can be pursued simultaneously to inform more robust genocide prevention endeavors.
“Genocide Is Worth It": Broadening The Logic Of Atrocity Prevention For State Actors, James E. Waller
“Genocide Is Worth It": Broadening The Logic Of Atrocity Prevention For State Actors, James E. Waller
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Of particular focus in this piece is the communication of the logic of atrocity prevention to State actors. As genocide studies has developed as a field, we also have become more insular; professionalizing how we operate in such a way that it has pulled us away from those very venues in which we should be applying our work. From the sure footing of the outside, we often criticize State actors, particularly policymakers, for their impotent actions in the face of escalating risks or, even, genocidal violence. But we seldom speak with them or push ourselves to find ways to bridge …
Book Review: Flowers In The Wall: Truth And Reconciliation In Timor-Leste, Indonesia And Melanesia, Leigh-Ashley Lipscomb
Book Review: Flowers In The Wall: Truth And Reconciliation In Timor-Leste, Indonesia And Melanesia, Leigh-Ashley Lipscomb
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This collection of essays reflects on truth and reconciliation commissions (TRCs) and related mechanisms that have taken place in Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Melanesia with a view towards informing other processes that engage historical approaches to resolve conflict. It documents global innovations in TRCs pioneered in this region, as well as the pivotal, trans-national nature of civil society’s influence on them. Rather than providing a legalistic or institutional account, this volume seeks to capture the unique quality of expression fostered by each truth-seeking response. It demonstrates the lyrical power of truth-telling to unravel dominant narratives and structural inequalities that perpetuate human …
Human Dimensions Of Roadside Forest Management To Reduce Utility Infrastructure Vulnerability, Danielle Kloster
Human Dimensions Of Roadside Forest Management To Reduce Utility Infrastructure Vulnerability, Danielle Kloster
Doctoral Dissertations
During major storm events in 2011 and 2012 (Tropical Storm Irene, Storm Alfred, Hurricane Sandy), approximately 90% of power outages in Connecticut were caused by falling trees or limbs. The storms brought attention to the vulnerability of utility infrastructure and, in response, more focus was placed on vegetation management. People play a role in each step of the vegetation management process: government and utility officials planning for infrastructure resilience, tree crews conducting the management, and property owners mediating management by consenting or objecting to proposed tree pruning and removal. My research explored the human dimensions of roadside vegetation management. Media …
Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu
Dissertations - ALL
This study compared three multimedia input modes in the modality and redundancy principles (Mayer, 2009) in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students’ learning and examined the applicability of the modality and redundancy principles for ESL students. Mayer’s modality and redundancy principles (2009) inform the design of effective multimedia lessons. However, the two principles originally stemmed from experimental studies examining students’ learning in their native language and did not include ESL students in the discussion. Based on the modality and redundancy principles, added on-screen text and graphics lead to an overload in learner’s visual channel, which undermines …
Independent Cinema In The Digital Age: Is Digital Transformation The Only Way To Survival?, Karolina Maria Sadlowska, Paula Sonja Karlsson, Steven Caldwell Brown
Independent Cinema In The Digital Age: Is Digital Transformation The Only Way To Survival?, Karolina Maria Sadlowska, Paula Sonja Karlsson, Steven Caldwell Brown
Economic and Business Review
Development of digital technologies has resulted in the creative and cultural industries having to adapt business models in light of evolving consumer preferences. This paper aims to examine how independent cinemas can transform their delivery in light of the challenges posed by digital disruption, and more specifically, whether this has to focus entirely on digital transformation. This conceptual paper examines one independent cinema in Scotland, concluding that digitalisation should be used to complement existing activities, along with exploring other innovative business models. It is crucial to understand that the old-time patterns of running a business have irrevocably changed.

Thonningia Sanguinea Vahl. (Balanophoraceae) In Southern Nigeria: Ii. Patterns Of Genetic Diversity And Population Structure Within And Between Populations, Odoligie Imarhiagbe, Emmanuel Izaka Aigbokhan
Makara Journal of Science
Studies have yet to assess the genetic variability in Thonningia sanguinea populations in Southern Nigeria. Hence, this study was conducted to elucidate the pattern of genetic variability and population structure among T. sanguinea populations in Southern Nigeria. Genomic DNA was extracted from 31 individuals in 15 populations and tested using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers. Several genetic diversity parameters were examined using GenALEx Ver. 6.5. Reproducible RAPD markers indicated that all the sampled populations were composed of individuals with a high genetic variability. The populations were grouped into four distinct clusters. The populations from the Okour community forest had …
Triggering Alarms At Dynamic And Flexible Times Based On External Factors, Sandro Feuz, Thomas Deselaers
Triggering Alarms At Dynamic And Flexible Times Based On External Factors, Sandro Feuz, Thomas Deselaers
Defensive Publications Series
Users often set alarms to be reminded of events or tasks that occur at specific times. In addition to specifying a time, alarms can be set in the form of a timer that goes off after a specified period. Currently, setting an alarm requires that the user know in advance the specific time or period when the alarm is to go off. This disclosure describes the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for setting alarms on a user’s device with the user’s permission. Such alarms can be set to go off at a time that can vary dynamically instead of …

“Neighbors As Competitors” Or “Neighbors As Partners”: How Does Market Segmentation Affect Regional Energy Efficiency In China?, Liang Nie, Zhongxiang Zhang
“Neighbors As Competitors” Or “Neighbors As Partners”: How Does Market Segmentation Affect Regional Energy Efficiency In China?, Liang Nie, Zhongxiang Zhang
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Existing studies have focused on the negative impact of inefficient resource allocation on energy performance in China’s factor market, but neglected to further explore the underlying reason for this phenomenon from the perspective of market segmentation. In this paper, the epsilon-based measure model, which combines the merits of radial and non-radial Data Envelopment Analysis, is employed to measure the energy efficiency, and price index method derived from Iceberg Transport Cost model is used to examine the degrees of market segmentation. On the basis, we use the Tobit model to empirically investigate the impact of market segmentation on China’s energy efficiency. …

Essays On Imperfect Competition In The Labor Market, Sydnee Christian Caldwell
Essays On Imperfect Competition In The Labor Market, Sydnee Christian Caldwell
Dissertation Awards
This thesis consists of three chapters on imperfect competition in the labor market. The first chapter (joint with Nikolaj Harmon) explores the relationship between an individual's wages and the quality of her opportunities at other firms (her outside options). To overcome the fact that many factors that shift an individual's outside opportunities also impact her productivity at her current job, we develop a novel identification strategy that generates within-individual (and within-firm-by-occupation) variation in workers' information about their outside options. This strategy, which we implement using linked employer-employee data from Denmark, exploits the fact that individuals often learn about labor market …
Green Strategic Planning Approach For International Shipping Activities, Xiaofang Wu, Luoping Zhang, Huan Feng
Green Strategic Planning Approach For International Shipping Activities, Xiaofang Wu, Luoping Zhang, Huan Feng
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Sustainability is a long-term and ultimate goal for international shipping, although it is slowly making progress. The shipping perspective that moves away from “port-to-port” operations to “door-to-door” services also requires international shipping to take a long-term and holistic view instead of fragmented efforts. How to achieve the long-term sustainability goal becomes a key issue for door-to-door international shipping. Hence, green strategic planning for door-to-door international shipping was proposed with green development that puts forward the eco-centric point of view as its basic theory for sustainability. This study used a strategic decision-making approach, a so-called multi-dimensional decision-making (MDDM), coupled with the …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Temperature And Prey Abundance On Bald Eagle Reproductive Dynamics, Joshua H. Schmidt, Judy Putera, Tammy L. Wilson
United States National Park Service: Publications
Understanding the mechanisms by which populations are regulated is critical for predicting the effects of large-scale perturbations. While discrete mortality events provide clear evidence of direct impacts, indirect pathways are more difficult to assess but may play important roles in population and ecosystem dynamics. Here, we use multi-state occupancy models to analyze a long-term dataset on nesting bald eagles in south-central Alaska with the goal of identifying both direct and indirect mechanisms influencing reproductive output in this apex predator. We found that the probabilities of both nest occupancy and success were higher in the portion of the study area where …

Apogee Enterprises, Inc.: Valuation And Investment Decision, Dustin S. Rietsema
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This paper examines market and economic data to predict the current stock value of Apogee Enterprises, Inc. (APOG). The valuation basis uses the corporate valuation model to discount Apogee’ future free cash flows at the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). Furthermore, it analyzes economic conditions within the industry relative to the business model to accurately predict future free cash flows of the company. In conclusion, I present Apogee’ intrinsic price per share to be relatively similar to its market price, therefore recommending a HOLD position for the stock.

Documentary Provenance And Digitized Collections: Concepts And Problems, Mats Dahlström, Joacim Hansson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Provenance research in digitized memory institution collections is mainly devoted to documenting and mapping the trajectories of the physical source documents across time, place and contexts, primarily by developing metadata standards and data models. The provenance of the digital reproduction and its relation to one or several physical source documents is however not being subjected to much inquiry. A possible explanation for this is the face-value approach with which we tend to regard digital reproductions. Looking more closely at such reproductions and their complex digitization process suggests a far from straightforward and linear provenance relation, and begs the question of …

Governance Fragmentation And Urban Spatial Expansion: Evidence From Europe And The United States, Silvia Beghelli, Gianni Guastella, Stefano Pareglio
Governance Fragmentation And Urban Spatial Expansion: Evidence From Europe And The United States, Silvia Beghelli, Gianni Guastella, Stefano Pareglio
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This study assesses the effects of urban governance structure on the spatial expansion of metropolitan areas. A more fragmented governance structure, represented by a high number of administrative units with decision power on land use per inhabitant, is expected to increase the competition between small towns in the suburbs of metropolitan areas to attract households and workers, which, in turn, induces more land uptake. We study empirically the relationship between administrative fragmentation and the spatial size of cities in a sample of 180 metropolitan areas in the contexts of the US and Europe in the period 2000-2012. Results shed light …

After The Storm: How Environmental Racism Impacted The United States' Response To Hurricane Maria, Hadley Ankrum
Student Theses 2015-Present
In September of 2017, disaster struck the territory of Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island. Although the storm itself caused tremendous damage to both the residents and the environment of Puerto Rico, the inadequate responses of both the United States federal government and local Puerto Rican politicians greatly exacerbated this devastation. This paper examines the efforts of the American government to ameliorate the issues created by the storm through the lens of environmental racism. The introduction will explore the events of the hurricane in order to give the reader context. Chapter 1 draws from the Millennium …
