Detection Of Shelterbelt Density Change Using Historic Apfo And Naip Aerial Imagery, Morgen Walter Victor Burke, Bradley Rundquist, Haochi Zheng
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Grand Forks County, North Dakota, boasts the highest concentration of shelterbelts in the World. As trees age and reach their lifespan limits, renovations should have taken place with new trees being planted. However, in recent years, the rate of tree removal is thought to exceed the rate of replanting, which can result in a net loss of shelterbelts. Through manual digitization and geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA), we mapped shelterbelt densities in the Grand Forks County using historical and contemporary aerial photography, and estimated actual changes in density over 54 years. Our results showed a doubling in shelterbelt densities from …

Microbial Community In Hyperalkaline Steel Slag-Fill Emulates Serpentinizing Springs, J Ingemar Ohlsson, Jay T. Osvatic, Eric D. Becraft, Wesley D. Swingley
Biology
To date, a majority of studies of microbial life in hyperalkaline settings focus on environments that are also highly saline (haloalkaline). Haloalkaline conditions oer microbes abundant workarounds to maintain pH homeostasis, as salt ions can be exchanged for protons by dedicated antiporter proteins. Yet hyperalkaline freshwater systems also occur both naturally and anthropogenically, such as the slag fill aquifers around former Lake Calumet (Chicago, IL, USA). In this study, 16S rRNA gene sequences and metagenomic sequence libraries were collected to assess the taxonomic composition and functional potential of microbes present in these slag-polluted waterways. Relative 16S rRNA gene abundances in …

Technology And Economy Analysis Of Waste Truck Tires Management, Irina Tsiryapkina
Technology And Economy Analysis Of Waste Truck Tires Management, Irina Tsiryapkina
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this work was to develop a waste truck tires recycling facility for the Siberian coal transportation company “SibTreid NK” in the Kemerovo region, Russia. For years, the company has been stockpiling old scrap tires at their warehouse or dumping them into open strip mines. Taking this into account as well as existing environmental concerns due to the continually growing coal industry in the Kemerovo region, it is highly necessary to make an operational facility to deal with the large number of accumulated waste truck tires.
To achieve this goal, this project reviewed different methods and technologies …
Restoring The Republic: A Conservative Manifesto For America’S Future, Cameron Khansarinia
Restoring The Republic: A Conservative Manifesto For America’S Future, Cameron Khansarinia
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
In response to liberal attempts to diverge from many American values and ways, some contemporary conservatives have responded by looking backward to what we used to be. Instead, the conservative project should be to transform us into the nation that we were always supposed to be, a project for which Tocqueville can provide guidance.
Author information: Cameron Khansarinia is a graduate of Harvard College. He studied political theory in the Department of Government and wrote his honors thesis on Alexis de Tocqueville’s contemporary relevance under the advisement of Professor Harvey C. Mansfield.

Hiv/Aids And Behavioral Risk Factors Among Former Texas Prison Inmates, Scarlett Lusk-Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As of the end of 2010, .9% (20,093) of the inmate population under the care of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons and 1.7% (2,394) of the inmate population under the care of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice were living with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to analyze the relationships between HIV/AIDS status and former inmate demographic characteristics, intravenous drug use (IDU), and social support networks. The behavior models of importation and deprivation formed the theoretical frameworks used to explore the relationship between HIV/AIDS and behavioral risk factors for released Texas prison inmates. Fifty former …

Oromo Ethiopians Perceptions Of The Prevalence, Causes, Treatment And Prevention Of Trachoma, Linda L. Gross
Oromo Ethiopians Perceptions Of The Prevalence, Causes, Treatment And Prevention Of Trachoma, Linda L. Gross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Ethiopia, one of the primary contributors to blindness is trachoma, which is an infectious ocular disease. There is no record of any prevention programs in rural Ethiopian villages of Oromia, where the prevalence of trachoma is high. The original purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of rural Oromo villagers in Ethiopia on the causes, treatment, and prevention of trachoma, using the health belief model and the social-ecological model as a theoretical framework. Due to a security situation in Ethiopia, final interviews were conducted with immigrant Ethiopians in the US, all of them from the trachoma-endemic …

This is a chapter in Language and Toponymy in Alaska and Beyond: Papers in Honor of James Kari.
Book description:
It is difficult to imagine place names research in Alaska without the work of James Kari. Through his tireless field work and advocacy, Dr. Kari has collaborated with speakers of all of Alaska’s Dene languages to help build a comprehensive record of Dene geographic knowledge. When Jim came to Alaska in 1972, the documentation of Dene languages was fragmentary at best, and the only records of Native place names were those found inaccurately spelled on maps and gazetteers. Now …

Lizzie Borden On Trial: Murder, Ethnicity, And Gender (Book Review), Kelly L. Marino
History Faculty Publications
Most Americans are familiar with the popular children’s rhyme about the accused Massachusetts woman Lizzie Borden and the 40, and subsequent 41, whacks she supposedly inflicted on her parents during their violent assassinations in the family home. However, few people know much about the actual history behind the Borden story. Over generations, popular depictions in literature, film, and television have skewed the details.
Understanding How Displacement Affects Hiv Prevalence Among Displaced Populations- A Scoping Review, Ryan Evan Yucha
Understanding How Displacement Affects Hiv Prevalence Among Displaced Populations- A Scoping Review, Ryan Evan Yucha
Public Health Theses
Over the course of the past two decades, the number of people who have been displaced has increased dramatically. With this brings a new set of health challenges for these populations as well as the countries to which these populations are displaced such as HIV/AIDS. There is evidence to show that forced displacement can cause an increase in the HIV prevalence among those displaced. However, there is evidence to suggest the contrary, as well.
The aim of this scoping review study is to determine what the existing literature can and cannot tell us about how forced displacement affects HIV prevalence …
The Evolution Of Technology In Call Centers, Julieo Stephen Thompson
The Evolution Of Technology In Call Centers, Julieo Stephen Thompson
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Historical research was conducted through literature. The report traces the evolution of technology in call centers (CCs) from their early inception to 2018. CCs are integrated into many facets of multidisciplinary areas of business, industry, and public and private institutions of higher education. Three research questions were addressed:
- What technologies enabled the start of CCs? How did the communications between customers and CSRs take place? What was the content of the earlier communications?
- How did services and communications evolve as technology matured?
- What are the current state-of-the-art technologies that exist in CCs? Which industries appear to have the best solutions? …
Examining Task Conflict And Team Atmosphere In Virtual Teams Engaged In Outsourced Project Work, Harold Carr Osborn
Examining Task Conflict And Team Atmosphere In Virtual Teams Engaged In Outsourced Project Work, Harold Carr Osborn
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Global teams have become commonplace. As teams have become more dispersed, leveraging outsourced resources has gained popularity. Outsourcing can be a prudent move financially; however, when it is inappropriately applied, the damage it produces can easily overshadow any financial gains. Such ill effects can include impaired employee performance and morale caused by decreased job security. Moreover, it can lead to a less favorable team atmosphere and increased task conflict.
This study examined the effects of team virtuality along with the strategic alignment of outsourcing on team performance. The research utilized the intervening processes theory (IPT). The IPT posits that the …

Investigating A Macro Level Trial Tax: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between A Circuit's Plea Proportion And Median Sentence Length In U.S. Federal Courts, Denise Lafontaine
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
This study investigates the relationship between the proportion of cases resolved by plea in the federal court circuits and the median sentence length of those circuits. Through OLS regression, this study models the relationship, controlling for variation in circuits, year, and violent crime proportion. With an understanding of two common theoretical frameworks surrounding the trial tax discussion, this study theorized under a focal concerns perspective that as the proportion of cases resolved by plea in a circuit increases, the median sentence length of that circuit would decrease. The results of this study are consistent with results of prior research showing …

Coastal Cultural Heritage Protection In The United States, France And The United Kingdom, Ryan Rowberry, Ismat Hanano, Sutton M. Freedman, Michelle Wilco, Cameron Kline
Faculty Publications By Year
Exacerbated by climate change, sea levels are rising rapidly. This poses a significant, immediate threat to coastal or riverine urban areas and the tangible cultural heritage (e.g. artifacts, buildings, monuments, archaeological sites) that makes them unique. Protecting coastal cultural resources from climate change is quickly becoming a global priority, and comparing cultural heritage laws designed to protect historic resources in coastal areas from several countries may illuminate potential paths forward. Following a brief discussion of the economic and public health benefits arising from the protection of cultural heritage, this article describes, examines, and compares the legal frameworks through which the …

Reorientations; Or, An Indigenous Feminist Reflection On The Anthropocene, Kali Simmons
Indigenous Nations Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:
Destruction of homelands. Loss of kinship species. Exposure to deadly contaminants. Mass extinction. Transformed lifeways. In the face of these radical changes, a question lingers: How long will life be possible? Recently the academy has also felt the urgency of these environmental problems and proposed to address them within the framework of the term "the Anthropocene." Indigenous studies has offered various responses to the Anthropocene, some arguing that it has utility in framing the violence of colonialism and others critiquing the limitations and assumptions behind the "anthropos" …
Empirical Essays On Science And New Technology Adoption, Huifeng Yu
Empirical Essays On Science And New Technology Adoption, Huifeng Yu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The first chapter studies how the quantity and quality of research output varies over the career using 5.6 million biomedical science articles published over three decades. We show that controlling for selective attrition reconciles conflicts in a longstanding, interdisciplinary literature. While research quality declines monotonically over the career, this decline is easily overlooked because the highest “ability” authors have the longest publishing careers. Our results have implications for broader questions of human capital accumulation over the career and also for federal research policies that shift funding from late- to early-career researchers – while providing more funding to researchers when they …

"Farre Fetched And Deare Bought" : Cosmetics And Englishness 1570-1625, Marta Josie Schoel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study examines cosmetic practice, discourse, and material to explore the ways in which face paint, often made from a mixture of foreign and domestic ingredients, challenges the emergent notion of a pure English identity. Within a broader discourse found in recipe books, anti-cosmetic treatises, public and private documents, and plays for public spectacle—as well as court masques—I examine how early modern performances use cosmetic mixtures as theatrical devices to stage, represent, and negotiate anxieties about England’s increased engagement with the nascent global economy. Worn on the permeable surface of the skin, cosmetic material, such as alum, mercury, and mummia, …

Convection-Permitting Ensemble Forecasts Of The 10-12 December 2013 Lake-Effect Snow Event: : Sensitivity To Microphysical, Planetary Boundary Layer, And Surface Layer Parameterizations, William Massey Bartolini
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Lake-effect snow (LeS) presents a substantial forecast challenge for convection-permitting models, due in part to uncertainties in the parameterization of microphysical (MP) and planetary boundary layer / surface layer (PBL/SL) processes. Here we focus on understanding these uncertainties for a LeS event that occurred during 10–12 December 2013 during the Ontario Winter Lake-effect Systems (OWLeS) field campaign. Throughout this event, long-lake-axis-parallel snowbands persisted downwind of the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, leading to snowfall accumulations as high as 105 cm (liquid precipitation equivalent of 64.5 mm) on the Tug Hill Plateau.
An Underground World : Creative Writing In The Dystopian Genre, Mary Kathleen Brown
An Underground World : Creative Writing In The Dystopian Genre, Mary Kathleen Brown
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Despite its importance for the creation of a compelling story, world-building is often overlooked in literary studies due to its complexity, with studies instead favoring analysis of plot, character, or situation. The dystopian genre dictates why world-building is a crucial element for fictional writing because it showcases a manipulated relationship between writer and reader. Using the overlap in possible worlds and actual worlds, this paper explores how world-building incites change in the actual world due to a reader correlating the possible world with their own. By way of example, my paper features the first three chapters of my dystopian novel, …
