Recontextualizing Ktunaxa Nation V. British Columbia: Crown Land, History And Indigenous Religious Freedom, Howard Kislowicz, Senwung Luk Jan 2019

Recontextualizing Ktunaxa Nation V. British Columbia: Crown Land, History And Indigenous Religious Freedom, Howard Kislowicz, Senwung Luk

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In the early 1990s, a ski hill developer proposed a ski resort development for an area known by the Ktunaxa Nation as Qat’muk. It is an area not covered by any land surrender treaty with Indigenous Peoples, but which British Columbia characterized as Crown land. The Ktunaxa had not objected to the use of the area for heli-skiing, but they objected to the ski resort development. The Supreme Court of Canada found that, by 2009, British Columbia had consulted with the Ktunaxa and accommodated their concerns by mandating a reduction in the size of the proposed resort.

Joint Determination Of Residential Relocation And Commuting: A Forecasting Experiment For Sustainable Land Use And Transportation Planning, Jaewon Lim, Jae Hong Kim Jan 2019

Joint Determination Of Residential Relocation And Commuting: A Forecasting Experiment For Sustainable Land Use And Transportation Planning, Jaewon Lim, Jae Hong Kim

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This article applies matrix forecasting methods to the investigation of residential relocation and commuting patterns that are highly interconnected, but often analyzed separately. More specifically, using recent inter-county migration and commuting pattern data for the three largest metropolitan areas in California, it examines how residential relocation and commuting are associated in the regions and whether a unified framework—in which household relocation and commuting flow matrices are jointly determined—can improve the forecasting performance. The relocation–commuting association is found to differ substantially by region, suggesting the importance of region-specific factors in shaping the interrelationship. Joint forecasting, however, can attain a higher accuracy …

Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck Jan 2019

Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck

Mormon Studies Review

The relationship between science and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been and continues to be a complicated story. Concerns and differing perspectives about science provided the underlying context for a number of formal and informal institutional directions taken by the church in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries. Often, these were influenced by differences in opinion about science among various leaders of the church. Areas in which science played a role include: the relationship between secular and church education, a battleground in framing doctrinal questions about creation—including syncretic influence from the rise of Christian fundamentalism and …

Supporting The Development Of Interest In The Workplace, K. Ann Renninger, S. E. Hidi

Educational Studies Faculty Works

Research on motivation and learning indicates that people stay in all types of jobs when they find meaning and reward in what they are doing. This chapter considers how the development of interest can benefit both workforce readiness and job performance. Advances in neuroscience provide evidence that all persons are hardwired to develop interest in some content; this means that the potential to be interested is universal. Kosfeld et al.’s study has implications for understanding how unmotivated learners can be supported to be motivated. Hundreds of studies have questioned the benefits of reward and suggested that they undermine intrinsic motivation, …

2018 Kentucky Dental Workforce Update, Sydney P. Thompson, Melissa Slone, Frances J. Feltner

Center of Excellence in Rural Health Workforce Reports

The perception that oral health is in some way less important than and separate from general health has been deeply ingrained in the American consciousness. Many Americans are unaware of ways to preserve oral health and may not recognize signs indicating they are in trouble. Poor oral health can contribute to various diseases including endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Kentuckians often fair worse on a multitude of health measures, especially rural Kentuckians. According to the 2019 County Health Rankings data, when compared to US averages, Kentuckians are more likely to smoke (18% vs 23%), be obese …

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Members of the SAR11 order Pelagibacterales dominate the surface oceans. Their extensive diversity challenges emerging operational boundaries defined for microbial 'species' and complicates efforts of population genetics to study their evolution. Here, we employed single-amino acid variants (SAAVs) to investigate ecological and evolutionary forces that maintain the genomic heterogeneity within ubiquitous SAR11 populations we accessed through metagenomic read recruitment using a single isolate genome. Integrating amino acid and protein biochemistry with metagenomics revealed that systematic purifying selection against deleterious variants governs non-synonymous variation among very closely related populations of SAR11. SAAVs partitioned metagenomes into two main groups matching large-scale oceanic …

The Use Of Video Reflection For Teacher Education And Professional Learning, Scott Gibbons, Amy N. Farley Jan 2019

The Use Of Video Reflection For Teacher Education And Professional Learning, Scott Gibbons, Amy N. Farley

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The literature base is clear that when teachers reflect on their practice, they can identify areas of strength and areas of growth—both of which can improve the quality of their teaching (Jaeger, 2013). However, the realities of teaching today often mean teachers have many competing responsibilities and very little time between classes and after school for professional learning and development. Many teachers do not have the opportunity to reflect on their practice until hours or days after teaching a lesson or activity. By incorporating video into a teacher’s reflective practices, the teacher can revisit the lesson or activity as if …

Essays On The Underlying Capacity Of The State And Its Effects On Economic Development, Alma Alicia Bezares Calderón

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on three main topics: state capacity, conflict and development. During my progress in my program, I have become more interested in these issues as I have seen how closely linked they are and how they help to explore questions related to prosperity, or the lack of thereof. In particular, my research, and more precisely this dissertation, concentrates on the connection among these three issues in low- and middle-income countries. In the first chapter, titled ”How Strong is your Shield? Subnational State Capacity and Violence in Mexico” I center the analysis on the case of Mexico, a middle-income …

Given the wealth of existing models, it is unclear which models perform best for interpolation or extrapolation of existing data sets, particularly when one is concerned with species assemblages. We compared the predictive performance of 33 variants of 15 widely applied and recently emerged SDMs in the context of multispecies data, including both joint SDMs that model multiple …

Role Of Managed Marine Areas On The Diversity And Individual Responses Of Rocky Intertidal Shore Grazers In Central Chile, Kathy Liu Jan 2019

Role Of Managed Marine Areas On The Diversity And Individual Responses Of Rocky Intertidal Shore Grazers In Central Chile, Kathy Liu

Scripps Senior Theses

Many different types of marine benthic herbivores or “grazers” inhabit coastal intertidal zones and play a crucial role in inter- and shallow subtidal ecosystems. Chile has one of the most diverse intertidal zones, but many intertidal grazers are exploited for human consumption. Marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine management and exploitation areas (MEAs) are promising tools for Chile to combat over exploitation of these grazer and other marine resources. This study surveyed the impact of sites with contrasting management on the diversity and abundance of all intertidal grazers and their impact on the size frequency and shell length-body weight allometry …

Physiological limits of non-native species to environmental factors are critical for their establishment and spread in the adventive range. The crapemyrtle bark scale, Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae (Kuwana), is a major pest of crapemyrtles. Despite concerns on its rapid spread, there is a lack of information on potential distribution range of this scale in the United States. To understand this scale's distribution potential, its thermal tolerance was evaluated using higher and lower thermal limits. Exposure time leading to 50 and 90% mortality (Lt50 …

Settling The Final Frontier: The Orbis Lease And The Possibilities Of Proprietary Communities In Space, Alexander W. Salter Jan 2019

Settling The Final Frontier: The Orbis Lease And The Possibilities Of Proprietary Communities In Space, Alexander W. Salter

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

The law and economics of space policy have recently become an important research area. In this Article, the author contributes to the literature on legal frameworks for outer space activities, specifically space settlement. Article II of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty forbids the extension of state territorial jurisdiction to outer space. Barring revision of this fundamental tenet of international space law, rules for human conduct in space must come from somewhere other than states. The author proposes privately owned and operated communities (proprietary communities) as a model for space settlement and residence. The author surveys the mechanisms that make such …

Electoral Dysfunction: Assessing State Electoral Laws And Turnout In Presidential Elections, Ellie S. Krossa Jan 2019

Electoral Dysfunction: Assessing State Electoral Laws And Turnout In Presidential Elections, Ellie S. Krossa

Honors Theses

Due to the United States’ shockingly low turnout in comparison to other Western democracies, many states around the country have enacted laws to increase the number of people who participate in presidential elections. Scholars have found mixed results when testing the effects of specific electoral reforms in individual states, but few have looked at comprehensive models to test the overall effects of these reforms on turnout. This thesis examines the ways in which electoral reforms across all fifty states have led to increases or decreases of turnout in presidential elections. It utilizes a comprehensive longitudinal model accounting for electoral reform …

The Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Pipeline: Attitudes, Symbolism, And Geography, Catherine W. Fraser Jan 2019

The Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Pipeline: Attitudes, Symbolism, And Geography, Catherine W. Fraser

Honors Theses

Oil pipelines, such as the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, are increasingly controversial and contested in the United States. Since its proposal in 2015, the Enbridge Line 3 Replacement (L3R) pipeline in Minnesota has also generated considerable debate. People who support and oppose oil pipeline projects are influenced by their ideologies, core values, partisan learnings, age, identity, and place attachment, as well as their proximity to new energy projects. However, the ability of any one variable, like spatial proximity or age, to predict attitudes towards new energy projects is debated. I conducted a literature review on attitudes towards energy …

Access To Higher Education, Job Mismatch, And Wage Penalties In Thailand, Palita Saripan Jan 2019

Access To Higher Education, Job Mismatch, And Wage Penalties In Thailand, Palita Saripan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study considers whether close proximity to higher education institutions increases the probability of earning a bachelor’s degree, overeducation, and horizontal mismatch between degree and occupation. Using data from the 2015 and 2016 Labor Force Survey of the National Statistical Office of Thailand, and jobs data from the Ministry of Labor, we find that individuals living in provinces with research or Rajabhat universities are more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree, but does not increase the probability of being overeducated for their job. In addition, we find larger overeducation penalties in provinces with universities. Finally, qualitative analysis shows that demand …

Juxtaposing Primary- And Intermediate-Elementary Trade Books’ Historical Representation Of Amelia Earhart, Rachael A. Burkhardt

Masters Theses

Amelia Earhart can be used in the classroom not only to interest students but can also be used to cover Common Core State Standards (CCSS), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) framework, and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). When teaching Amelia Earhart, textbooks, trade books, and primary sources can be used, however one must be careful with the misrepresentations each resource can portray. To look at what is misrepresented, omitted, and included within primary and intermediate grade level trade books, 32 books were scrutinized. The trade books being analyzed were found to have some historically representative and misrepresentative elements …

The Historical Representation Of Abraham Lincoln Within Trade Books Written Between The Time Frame Of 1930 And 1970, Emily Griswell

Masters Theses

As educators learn to amend to the Common Core State Standards, they are left with little-to-no time for subjects like science and social studies as the focus is primarily on reading and English language arts. History is slowly becoming a background routine for educators and is falling behind centerfold curriculum in classrooms across the country. This is inclusive of the studies of individuals who helped shape our country and nation. This study analyzes a data sample of 11 children and young adult literature trade books about Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president, in search of patterns and common representations. Within the …
