Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt
Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis I reflect upon a digital mapping project I did in the rural agricultural villages of Bangoua and Batoufam in the Grassfields region of Cameroon. This thesis considers digital mapping as a possible strategy for addressing a current dichotomy in these villages. On the one hand community members express concern over observed shifts in local weather patterns, which they attribute to climate change, and on the other hand community members express desperation for “development.” Of over 130 mapped points, I use this thesis to look at three case studies of community centered development initiatives that address both development …
Turning Wisconn Valley Into The Next Silicon Valley: Reforming Wisconsin Non-Compete Law To Attract High-Tech Employers, Kelly Krause
Turning Wisconn Valley Into The Next Silicon Valley: Reforming Wisconsin Non-Compete Law To Attract High-Tech Employers, Kelly Krause
Marquette Law Review
The July 2017 arrival of Taiwanese tech-giant Foxconn and the
establishment of the Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park in Wisconsin
reflects a larger trend in the United States to reinvent the nation’s
manufacturing economy with high-tech production. High-tech employers have
substantial interests in retaining employees in order to protect their valuable
proprietary information and market share. Non-compete agreements, also
known as restrictive covenants or covenants not to compete, are often the legal
device used to secure these interests. This Comment argues that to attract and
retain employers in the tech industry, Wisconsin should reform its non-compete
law by adopting …
Accessibility And Perceived Value Of Pre-Admission Clinical Contact Hours: Physical Therapy Clinician Perspectives, Riley Wilson
Accessibility And Perceived Value Of Pre-Admission Clinical Contact Hours: Physical Therapy Clinician Perspectives, Riley Wilson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Purpose: This study analyzes the accessibility and perceived value of contact hours prior to a student's acceptance to a professional physical therapy (PT) program from clinicians' perspective. There is limited research regarding the effectiveness of pre-admission clinical contact hours in PT. The results may help the conversation on whether contact hours should be a requirement prior to acceptance into a program, and the impact the requirement may have on practicing clinicians.
Methods: This study utilized an electronic survey sent to the chairpersons or Directors of Clinical Education of 1-2 accredited programs in each state (n=48) that has a PT program, …
First Amendment Law—The Regulation Of Religious Lobbyists: A Spiritual Battle For The Soul Of Democracy, Nicholas Melvin Smith
First Amendment Law—The Regulation Of Religious Lobbyists: A Spiritual Battle For The Soul Of Democracy, Nicholas Melvin Smith
Western New England Law Review
Governmental transparency is among the most fundamental requirements of a democracy. This belief is the backbone of codes of ethics amongst both states and the federal government. Codes of ethics universally apply to state employees, as well as those attempting to influence policy. We call these influencers lobbyists. Every state regulates the actions of lobbyists. Some states have broad, sweeping language that requires lobbyists to report a great deal of information to the state, which is then made public to voters, while other states allow for express exemptions to keep certain actions out of the public eye.
Because the federal …
Anthropocenic Disruption In World Energy: Response Of International Law, Steven Ferrey
Anthropocenic Disruption In World Energy: Response Of International Law, Steven Ferrey
Western New England Law Review
The earth is at a “tipping point” for climate change, according to the world’s scientific community. Building on the basic structure of the Kyoto Protocol, reaffirmed at the December 2015 Paris Conference of the Parties, it remains unresolved how the framework of international law for both reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and addressing climate change will be implemented across 200 nations.
Approximately 40% of all CO2 emissions are attributable to the electric power sector. Currently, there is no international requirement that developed economies make any shift to zero-carbon or low-carbon renewable power, and the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) …

Traffic Stop Federalism: Protecting North Carolina Black Drivers From The United States Supreme Court, Anthony J. Ghiotto
Traffic Stop Federalism: Protecting North Carolina Black Drivers From The United States Supreme Court, Anthony J. Ghiotto
University of Baltimore Law Review
Black drivers face a different constitutional reality than whites the moment they step behind the wheel in North Carolina. Although black drivers represent only about twenty-two percent of the North Carolina population, thirty-two percent of all traffic stops involve black drivers. This racial disparity may raise suspicion of either implicit or explicit racial profiling on the part of police departments, but the reality is that North Carolina law does not expressly prohibit racial profiling. Instead, so long as the police officers have an objective basis to stop a driver—and they may choose from any of the hundreds of misdemeanor traffic …

Background and Purpose: Disabled individuals, their families, and communities are more likely to live in poverty than their non-disabled counterparts. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is social safety net that provides cash assistance programs through social insurance (Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI) and public assistance (Supplemental Security Income, or SSI) programs to people who meet eligibility criteria. The SSA offers work incentive programs that encourage enrolled disabled people to return to the workforce yet has found that these programs are infrequently utilized. This research aims to fill both knowledge and methodological gaps in the literature on why those support …
Encouraging Students To Draw On Work Experiences When Articulating Achievements And Capabilities To Enhance Employability, Denise A. Jackson, Susan Edgar
Encouraging Students To Draw On Work Experiences When Articulating Achievements And Capabilities To Enhance Employability, Denise A. Jackson, Susan Edgar
Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles
Employability drives higher education policy yet despite the investment in developing ‘rounded’ graduates, students experience difficulties in articulating their achievements and capabilities during graduate recruitment. The purpose of this research was to trial and evaluate a career development intervention aimed at drawing on work experiences when applying for graduate roles. Students (N = 136) from two contrasting disciplines, Business and Physiotherapy, and two institutions participated in a two-staged intervention. A focus group was also conducted with career advisors (N = 9) to examine student engagement with career development learning. Findings indicated that students were confident in their ability …
A Self Study Of My Leadership As Principal To Improve Student Achievement In Literacy In The Middle Grades, Latrese Tonya Mathis
A Self Study Of My Leadership As Principal To Improve Student Achievement In Literacy In The Middle Grades, Latrese Tonya Mathis
Dissertations
This self-study examined my leadership practices as a principal and researcher. Herr and Anderson (2005) define self-study as "a focus on one's own personal and professional self." Through reflective analysis of my leadership practices, the Instructional Leadership and Grade Level Teams were supported with protocols and leadership methods to improve literacy instruction at middle grades. Upon reflection, concerns existed regarding inadequate and inconsistent student growth through the lens of school wide assessments. The examination of student data, root cause identification, and the development and monitoring of action items assisted to investigate my analysis of this concern. The significance of this …

The Diptera Of Panama. I. Annotated Catalog Of The Tipulomorpha Of Panama, Brian J. Armitage, Tomas A. Rios Gonzalez
Insecta Mundi
There are 214 species of the suborder Tipulomorpha (Diptera) known from Panama. Of these, 162 species were described by the noted American entomologist, Charles Paul Alexander, from Panama during the period from 1912 through 1979. Panama hosts two of the four families found within the Tipulomorpha: Limoniidae (197 species) and Tipulidae (17 species). We have records of only three species from multiple provinces (n = 2) within Panama and 211 species from just one province. The vast majority of the latter are known from a single location within their respective provinces. There are 142 endemic species (66.4%) included in …
The Context And Challenges Of Interdisciplinarity In The Philippines, Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
The Context And Challenges Of Interdisciplinarity In The Philippines, Ma. Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Leadership and Strategy Faculty Publications
The tension between disciplines and interdisciplinary initiatives has been present in different areas around the world. This paper discusses the roots of the tension in the world and in the Philippines, as well as issues and challenges of implementation. It begins with the meaning of discipline and the nuances in the interaction of multiple disciplines, (e.g. multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary) and traces and traces the development of disciplines in relation to the development of higher education. While academic departments and programs give life and power to the disciplines, there were pressures to work across disciplines to achieve the underlying goals …
The Properties Of Integration: Mixed-Income Housing As Discrimination Management, Audrey Mcfarlane
The Properties Of Integration: Mixed-Income Housing As Discrimination Management, Audrey Mcfarlane
All Faculty Scholarship
Mixed-income housing is an increasingly popular approach to providing affordable housing. The technique largely went unnoticed until developers of mixed-income housing constructed buildings containing separate entrances for rich and poor residents. The ensuing “poor door” controversy illustrated that mixed-income housing, as both a method of affordable housing production and an integration strategy, is in unacknowledged tension with itself. This Article argues that, mixedincome housing is implemented as a surreptitious form of racial and economic integration that accommodates and replicates prevailing race and class assumptions detrimental to the needs and interests of low to moderate-income individuals in need of housing. The …

The European And American Immigration Struggle: How Two Continents Endeavor To Solve The Immigration Question, Austin Creal
The European And American Immigration Struggle: How Two Continents Endeavor To Solve The Immigration Question, Austin Creal
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Both the European Union and the United States experienced an immigration crisis in the Early 2000's. Each has reacted with policies and judicial opinions based on their culture, circumstances, and geography. I conduct a comparative policy-based analysis with a multi-faced lens that will be analyzed with emphasis on the consequences of immigration and how each judicial system endeavors to solve the most pressing challenge of their times. Specifically, I compare various case law, directives, and precedent to provide a more in-depth narrative on how each system has reacted to circumstances before their respective Courts. An in-depth examination of both EU …
The Relationship Between Maltreatment And Self-Regulation Trajectories: A Multimethod Approach, Grayson Sturgis
The Relationship Between Maltreatment And Self-Regulation Trajectories: A Multimethod Approach, Grayson Sturgis
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Typically, the ability of individuals to regulate their behaviors and emotions improves over time. However, prior research has not examined possible heterogeneity in self-regulation skills from birth to age 16. This study examined trajectories of self-regulation using growth mixture modeling and tested the relationship between child maltreatment (i.e., number of maltreatment allegations) and trajectory group membership, growth parameters, and group formation. Subjects (N = 1354) were drawn from the Consortium for Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). Tests of unconditional models (i.e., those without covariates) with 1-5 classes supported a 4-class solution (consistently good, consistently poor, improving, …
A Theory Of Poverty: Legal Immobility, Sara Sternberg Greene
A Theory Of Poverty: Legal Immobility, Sara Sternberg Greene
Faculty Scholarship
The puzzle of why the cycle of poverty persists and upward class mobility is so difficult for the poor has long captivated scholars and the public alike. Yet with all of the attention that has been paid to poverty, the crucial role of the law, particularly state and local law, in perpetuating poverty is largely ignored. This Article offers a new theory of poverty, one that introduces the concept of legal immobility. Legal immobility considers the cumulative effects of state and local laws as a mechanism through which poverty is perpetuated and upward mobility is stunted. The Article provides an …
The Fearless Teaching Framework: A Model To Synthesize Foundational Education Research For University Instructors, Alice E. Donlan, Sandra M. Loughlin, Virginia L. Byrne
The Fearless Teaching Framework: A Model To Synthesize Foundational Education Research For University Instructors, Alice E. Donlan, Sandra M. Loughlin, Virginia L. Byrne
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
There is often a disconnect between the unit of analysis in rigorous education research, and the types of recommendations that instructors find the most useful to improve their teaching. Research often focuses on narrow slices of the student experience, and university instructors often require broad recommendations. We present the Fearless Teaching Framework to address this gap between research and practice. In this framework, we define four pieces of effective teaching: classroom climate, course content, teaching practices, and assessment strategies. We argue that these are appropriate areas of focus for instructor growth, based on their relations to student engagement.
Analysis Of The Six-Day War And The Role Of Territory In The Conflict, Michael W. Krupka
Analysis Of The Six-Day War And The Role Of Territory In The Conflict, Michael W. Krupka
Tenor of Our Times
There exist many contentious topics in the world, but relatively few of them relate to the mere existence of a nation-state. Israel, a newcomer on the stage of world politics, inspires just such debate. In fact, the contention has been so strong that Israel has fought several wars just to maintain its survival. Among the numerous factors playing into these conflicts, religious differences, national pride, and ethnic tension all play vital roles. This paper, however, intends to focus on one war in particular, the Six-Day War, and the impact territory made in bringing the war to a head. While the …

Image-Based Roadway Assessment Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Weilian Song
Image-Based Roadway Assessment Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Weilian Song
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Road crashes are one of the main causes of death in the United States. To reduce the number of accidents, roadway assessment programs take a proactive approach, collecting data and identifying high-risk roads before crashes occur. However, the cost of data acquisition and manual annotation has restricted the effect of these programs. In this thesis, we propose methods to automate the task of roadway safety assessment using deep learning. Specifically, we trained convolutional neural networks on publicly available roadway images to predict safety-related metrics: the star rating score and free-flow speed. Inference speeds for our methods are mere milliseconds, enabling …
Optimal Gateway Placement In Low-Cost Smart Cities, Oluwashina Madamori
Optimal Gateway Placement In Low-Cost Smart Cities, Oluwashina Madamori
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Rapid urbanization burdens city infrastructure and creates the need for local governments to maximize the usage of resources to serve its citizens. Smart city projects aim to alleviate the urbanization problem by deploying a vast amount of Internet-of-things (IoT) devices to monitor and manage environmental conditions and infrastructure. However, smart city projects can be extremely expensive to deploy and manage partly due to the cost of providing Internet connectivity via 5G or WiFi to IoT devices. This thesis proposes the use of delay tolerant networks (DTNs) as a backbone for smart city communication; enabling developing communities to become smart cities …
