Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales Jan 2019

Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The advent of the computer and the internet allows Joseph Smith as the “author” of the Book of Mormon to be compared to other authors and their books in ways essentially impossible even a couple of decades ago. Six criteria can demonstrate the presence of similarity or distinctiveness among writers and their literary creations: author education and experience, the book’s size and complexity, and the composition process and timeline. By comparing these characteristics, this essay investigates potentially unique characteristics of Joseph Smith and the creation of the Book of Mormon.

Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins Jan 2019

Air Quality And Asthma Hospitalization: Evidence Of Pm2.5 Concentrations In Pennsylvania Counties, Elham Erfanian, Alan R. Collins

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

According to the World Health Organization, 235 million people around the world currently suffer from asthma, which includes approximately 25 million in the United States. There is substantial epidemiological evidence indicating linkages between outdoor air pollution and asthma symptoms, more specifically between concentrations of particulate matter and asthma. Using county level data for 2001-2014, a spatial panel framework is imposed based upon prevailing wind patterns to investigate the direct and indirect impacts of PM2.5 concentration levels on asthma hospitalization in Pennsylvania. This model controls for population density, precipitation, smoking rate, and population demographic variables. Results show that PM2.5 concentrations as …

The Third Design Space: A Postcolonial Perspective On Corporate Engagement With Open Source Software Communities, Kenneth E. Kendall, Julie E. Kendall, Matt Germonprez, Lars Mathiassen Jan 2019

The Third Design Space: A Postcolonial Perspective On Corporate Engagement With Open Source Software Communities, Kenneth E. Kendall, Julie E. Kendall, Matt Germonprez, Lars Mathiassen

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Corporations increasingly engage with open source software communities in the co‐creation of software. This collaboration between corporate professionals and open source software community members is strikingly different from the early days of software development where for‐profit firms attempted to dominate and control the industry while attempting to throttle the success of independent developers offering an alternative, open source option. While many metaphors like trading zones, common pool resources and ecosystems have helped understand the phenomenon, the metaphors do not portray what the industry was like before and after the transition. We adopt a postcolonial metaphor as an analytical lens to …

Broadband Connectivity In “Flyover Country”, Randall Mccoy Jan 2019

Broadband Connectivity In “Flyover Country”, Randall Mccoy

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Broadband commonly refers to high-speed internet access that is always on and faster than the traditional dial-up access. Most urban areas in the United States have broadband and cellular internet services abundantly provided, but adequate broadband in rural areas of the country still do not have enough internet service needed to perform and compete in modern markets. In the 21st Century, the Internet is necessary to complete necessary tasks in communications for education, businesses, health care, and farming communities. This case provides a conversation for a Computer Information Systems undergraduate course, or an introduction to Management Information Systems course, in …

Part 6: The Economic Impact Of A Hurricane On Hampton Roads, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

In 1821, a Category 3 hurricane made landfall in Hampton Roads, flooding Norfolk before moving on to New York City. What would be the impact of a similar hurricane today on the region's economy? We find that a major hurricane would cause almost $20 billion in property damage, create more than 2 million tons of debris and reduce economic output by over $20 billion in the first year following landfall.

A Top-Down Approach To National Memory Formation: Holocaust Remembrance And Memory Laws In Russia, Ukraine, And Poland, Bailey Humyn Jan 2019

A Top-Down Approach To National Memory Formation: Holocaust Remembrance And Memory Laws In Russia, Ukraine, And Poland, Bailey Humyn

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the top-down approach to national memory formation carried out by post-communist governments in Eastern Europe. The governments of Russia, Ukraine, and Poland have gone to great lengths to create an official national memory of the Holocaust to the exclusion of the collective memories of others. To study how a state-sponsored national memory is institutionalized in a country, I analyze presidential speeches related to the Holocaust and the ways they are influenced by nondomestic factors and examine Holocaust museums in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland. I then examine the creation of memory laws by these countries and analyze how …

Economic Voting Analysis Of The 2016 Presidential Election: A County-Level Analysis, Amanda Norton Jan 2019

Economic Voting Analysis Of The 2016 Presidential Election: A County-Level Analysis, Amanda Norton

Theses & ETDs

This project examines county-level economic conditions to explain the outcome of the 2016 Presidential Election. The major investigation is understanding the effects of local unemployment across counties on the support for Donald Trump. Three models are explored with the first investigating the inclusion of the percentage of vote support for Romney in the 2012 Presidential Election. The second model includes an interaction term of the change in the unemployment rate between 2015 to 2016 on the unemployment rate of 2015. The third model adds an interaction of the poverty rate and the percentage of the African American individuals within a …

Ethnographic Colonization: A Postcolonial Theoretical Examination Of The Italian Migration To Argentina From 1870 To 1914, Lewis Lee Jan 2019

Ethnographic Colonization: A Postcolonial Theoretical Examination Of The Italian Migration To Argentina From 1870 To 1914, Lewis Lee

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the question of how migrants become colonizers, specifically examining the Italian migration to Argentina from 1870 – 1914. In the context of this particular period, the question is whether or not these migrants unknowingly acted as agents of a larger Italian colonial project by engaging with the Italian government’s created nationality, or italianità. By building a theoretical lens through the theories of Ania Loomba and Frantz Fanon on colonialism, Lorenzo Veracini on settler colonialism, Albert Memmi on the colonizer and the colonized, and Anibal Quijano on the coloniality of power, it is possible to see how these …

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz Jan 2019

Breaking The Bee’S Knees: An Overview Of Global Pollinator Decline And Conservation Efforts On The New College Of Florida Campus, Jackie Lebouitz

Theses & ETDs

We live in a world where anthropogenic activity and its consequences (pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, etc.) have led to the loss of pollinator biodiversity. Both agricultural operations and general ecosystems require pollination for stability. Biodiversity provides an excellent ecological buffer for compromised species that may disappear due to environmental stressors, disease, and genetic bottlenecks. In fact, bats, birds, butterflies, beetles, and even some species of lizards can provide pollination services to plants. Some flowering plants rely on specialist pollinators for their continued persistence in an ecological community, and the vulnerability of these species can lead to disruptions in the …

Something To Believe In: A Multidimensional Approach To Education Encompassing: Radical Pedagogies, Reading The World And The Metaphysics Of Racial, Gendered And Societal Barriers In Education., Yvenord Mergilles

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an exploration that moves past simply ushering diverse persons into the academy. What happens once entry occurs? The thesis offers revisions to pedagogies and highlights context and difference as key areas that current best practices and calls for innovative education overlook. The work is based in a learner-centered approach and from a student-centered perspective, a perspective novel in the field. Reading the world and Intersectionality are core theoretical frameworks which guided the exploration. This exploration focused on learner centered assessment, the acknowledgment of difference through access to knowledge, survivalist tactics and their metaphysical underpinnings as means of …

A Novel Approach To In Situ Microbiome Surveys Of Fungi In Mosquitoes, Evan Towers Teal Jan 2019

A Novel Approach To In Situ Microbiome Surveys Of Fungi In Mosquitoes, Evan Towers Teal

Theses & ETDs

Millions of people are affected by mosquito-borne diseases, causing problems for people specifically in Sub-Saharan Africa. Scientists have started looking at control methods using microbes to better manage mosquitoes, primarily looking at organisms in the bacterial kingdom. In this project, I attempted to survey the fungal microbiome of three mosquito genera using ITS1 and ITS4 primers. Results from this experiment showed mostly mosquito DNA was amplified using these methods, however, this data has uncovered important information about biases which occur in the process of amplifying multiple genomes using ITS1 and ITS4 primers.

Art Of The Alien Timeline: Exploring How Nonlinear Narratives Achieve Brecht’S Theory Of Alienation In Run Lola Run And Memento, Connor Borden Jan 2019

Art Of The Alien Timeline: Exploring How Nonlinear Narratives Achieve Brecht’S Theory Of Alienation In Run Lola Run And Memento, Connor Borden

Theses & ETDs

Films that are structured with a nonlinear narrative are able to create a sense of unfamiliarity for the audience watching. This uncertainty can be used to create Bertolt Brecht’s Alienation Effect which is meant to create more critically observant audiences by creating an experience for the audience members that is separated from what is going on in the story. This thesis examines two films which are structured around unique nonlinear narratives and the way that they create the Alienation Effect with their narrative presentation. These films both contain some form of a puzzle in their plot so that audiences will …

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington Jan 2019

Performing The Possibility Of Difference: Analyzing Race, Movement, And Performance In The Work Of Pearl Primus And Ira Aldridge, Eugenia Hayley Titterington

Theses & ETDs

The medium of performance is a valuable means for engaging racial dialogue since its liveness draws attention to the performing body, allowing us to negotiate what social meanings culture has invested in bodies. However, attention to topics of race and racism in Western theatre has historically avoided confronting intersubjective dialogues about race in favor of objectifying otherized racial identities, most notably performances of blackness, to reaffirm White racial dominance. Black artists have historically worked to resist this by reframing the performance as a site of opposition. This study uses this point of tension to study the ways physicality in dance …

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown Jan 2019

The History, Current State, And Potential Future Of Archaeological Illustration, Madison Brown

Theses & ETDs

Archaeological illustration, in the broadest term, is the depiction of human material culture through a visual medium. As technique advanced over time, so too did the understanding of how to best portray images in an archaeological context. The goal of this paper is to present an abridged history of the important innovations that lead up to the formation of this discipline, as well as discuss the conventions of modern practice. The term “convention” is important as the field of archaeological illustration has never truly standardized, so there is a great deal of variation that will not be fully touched upon. …

Rural Politics: A Quantitative Exploration Of Rurality And Political Behavior, Jack Knox Belk Jr. Jan 2019

Rural Politics: A Quantitative Exploration Of Rurality And Political Behavior, Jack Knox Belk Jr.

Theses & ETDs

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on the differences between rural and urban individuals in the United States. This seems to have left many observers with the impression that political scientists are well informed with regard to the role of place in political affairs. The most cursory review of the literature confirms that this is absolutely not the case. While urban politics has received considerable attention over the years, no one—certainly no contemporary author—has offered a detailed investigation of rural political behavior. We attempt to fill that gap by synthesizing previous work, crafting appropriate measures, and modeling …

Conservation Genetics Of The Florida Duskywing Skipper (Ephyriades Brunnea), Amanda Markee Jan 2019

Conservation Genetics Of The Florida Duskywing Skipper (Ephyriades Brunnea), Amanda Markee

Theses & ETDs

In light of exponentially increasing human influences on the environment, there has never been a more important time for endangered species conservation. Likewise, as the negative effects of climate change continue to alter abiotic and biotic factors which allow species to persist, habitat specialists are explicitly at risk of becoming endangered. Habitat fragmentation is occurring synergistically in the presence of human development, which restricts gene flow, causing higher instances of negative genetic consequences. In rare specialized species, these consequences can more often than not lead to extirpation, or in the worst cases, extinction. The Florida Duskywing butterfly (Ephyriades brunnea) is …

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood Jan 2019

Pre-Existing Conditions: Christianity, Identity, Gender, And Bodily Autonomy, Alice Corinne Leavengood

Theses & ETDs

This art project is a culmination of research in Medieval and Gothic Christian culture, coupled with contemporary politics and social commentary on gender, identity, sexual freedom, and reproductive rights. Through an examination of the culture wars and development of the Religious Right and rise of anti-abortion propaganda, my thesis explores political iconography as a way to reaffirm personal freedom relating to gender, identity, and reproductive rights. Stained glass windows are simulated through screen printing on Plexiglass, a new technique of my own creation. Depicting narratives concerning the oppression of queer and female-bodied people and the need for the feminist and …

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl Jan 2019

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Although many beaded aprons from the coastal area of the Guianas are among the oldest preserved collected objects of the South American lowlands, there is still no general consensus as to who the manufacturers of these aprons were. The glass beads used differ from those typically employed at the end of the 19th century and can be dated between 1750 and 1850. In the literature and museums, these aprons are not frequently described in detail, and the author is not aware of any early object for which a collector has provided more detailed information. This article is intended to give …

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin Jan 2019

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We estimate the trade-off between agricultural production and forest preservation for the municipalities in Brazil’s agricultural frontier, the so-called “arc of deforestation,” using census and deforestation data for 2006. We use a nonparametric directional output distance function that allows us to identify the gradients of the production possibility frontier, which are the trade-offs of interest. We found that, on average, $979 is forgone in annual livestock, timber, and grain revenues to conserve 1 hectare of forest. This translates, ceteris paribus, to an average present value of costs to permanently sequester CO2 of $16.36/t, higher than most previous estimates.

The Opportunity Cost Of Preserving The Brazilian Amazon Forest, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Richard Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Jan 2019

The Opportunity Cost Of Preserving The Brazilian Amazon Forest, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Richard Perrin, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We estimate the trade-off between forest preservation and agricultural production for the Legal Amazon region, using census and deforestation

data for municipalities in 2006.We use a directional distance function to represent the production possibility frontier, and then calculate the shadow

price of reducing deforestation in terms of agricultural income foregone. Results indicate that, on average, to preserve 1 ha of forest, $797 in annual

agricultural GDP must be foregone. Using a discount rate of 10% and average forest carbon density of 132 tons per hectare, these results imply an

average shadow price of $16 per ton of CO2 permanently sequestered.

Engagement To Enhance Community: An Example Of Extension’S Land-Grant Mission In Action, Cheryl Burkhart-Kriesel, Jason L. Weigle, Jennifer Hawkins

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Engagement is a foundational practice for the Extension systems of land-grant universities and is demonstrated through its’ work in partnership with individuals, organizations and communities. This article will share how an Extension-led effort, focused on an aspect of community development, integrated several components of engagement starting with the initial conversation through the evaluation process. Practitioner reflections on two examples that occurred in different states will highlight the processes and tools that helped nurture engagement between faculty and community and support the development of a sustainable and resilient community. The multi-state implementation will illustrate the unique depth and breadth of public …
