No. 36: The Interface Between Urbanization, Gender And Food In The Global South, Liam Riley, Belinda Dodson Jan 2019

No. 36: The Interface Between Urbanization, Gender And Food In The Global South, Liam Riley, Belinda Dodson

Hungry Cities Partnership

The interface between urbanization, gender and food in the Global South offers a vantage point from which to think through the integrated nature of contemporary development challenges from both the structural elements of urban poverty and the ways in which urban residents navigate their cities. The starting point of this paper is that there is insufficient research from the vantage point where all three of these concepts interface, even as there is a rich body of literature at the interface of each pair of elements (e.g., gender and urbanization, gender and food, food and urbanization). This paper draws attention to …

No. 35: The Food Safety And Food Security Nexus In The Urbanizing Global South, Jodi Koberinski, Zhenzhong Si, Steffanie Scott

Hungry Cities Partnership

Socioeconomic and structural changes in the global food system, driven by rapid urbanization in the Global South, shape the nature and scale of food safety problems as well as the strategies designed to cope with them. These changes create new challenges for ensuring food security, given that food safety is an essential dimension of food security. By reviewing existing studies, this paper summarizes three key types of contaminant (microbiological, chemical, and physical) that compromise food safety. With analyses of three cases (avian flu, genetic modification contamination, and melamine-tainted milk) in the Global South, the paper explores how food safety is …

No. 31: Motivations And Challenges Of Youth Entrepreneurs In Maputo's Food Markets, Cameron Mccordic, Ines Raimundo Jan 2019

No. 31: Motivations And Challenges Of Youth Entrepreneurs In Maputo's Food Markets, Cameron Mccordic, Ines Raimundo

Hungry Cities Partnership

Amidst a growing youth unemployment crisis spreading across Sub-Saharan Africa, there is a pressing need for effective policy intervention, based on sound research, to support young people’s entry into labour markets. As urban labour markets continue to catalyze the growth of national economies in the Global South, the inclusion of youth entrepreneurs in the food retail sector in Maputo has become an important but largely unstudied phenomenon. This paper assesses the demographic and entrepreneurial characteristics of this population through a vendor survey of 504 youth entrepreneurs (those aged 35 years and younger) operating small-scale food enterprises in the Mozambican capital. …

The Disorderly Female: Alcohol, Prostitution And Moral Insanity In 19th-Century Fremantle, Alexandra Wallis Jan 2019

The Disorderly Female: Alcohol, Prostitution And Moral Insanity In 19th-Century Fremantle, Alexandra Wallis

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Mary Jane Hayes was a “deviant” woman—a “drunken prostitute” who was in and out of both the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum and Fremantle Prison from 1871 to 1898. One of twelve women in the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum records to have been referred to as a prostitute, Mary Jane was particularly reviled: her alcohol consumption and unsavoury lifestyle were often blamed as the cause of her violent behaviour and insanity. Prison and asylum records reveal several arrests for drunkenness and vagrancy, with an estimated 67 convictions; newspaper articles also depict her numerous convictions for indecent behaviour, obscene language and larceny. Mary Jane …

Transborder Speech, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr. Jan 2019

Transborder Speech, Ronald J. Krotoszynski Jr.

Notre Dame Law Review

In an increasingly globalized marketplace of ideas, First Amendment law and theory must recognize that the freedom of speech does not end at the water’s edge. Simply put, the locus of expressive activity should not prefigure the government’s ability to engage in censorship. Nevertheless, under current First Amendment law and practice, the accident of geography may serve as a constitutionally acceptable basis for content-based censorship of speech. If, as the Supreme Court argued with such ferocity in Citizens United, the value of speech to an audience does not depend on the speaker’s identity or motive for speaking, then by …

The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao Jan 2019

The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao

Management Faculty Research

Since 2017, increased sexual harassment incidents have been reported in Hollywood; yet, little guidance has been offered on how organizations, which are informally governed by their network members, can effectively reduce sexual harassment. Building upon the theory of network governance, this paper suggests social mechanisms, which are used to coordinate and safeguard exchanges between Hollywood organizations, are more effective at reducing incidents of workplace sexual harassment than traditional strategies. These social mechanisms direct change to the macroculture through collective sanctions that damage the perpetrators reputation and restrict access to network opportunities. In essence, perpetrators become toxic assets that Hollywood avoids …

Affirming The Purpose Of Affirmative Action: Understanding A Policy Of The Past To Move Towards A More Informed Future, Meagan Schantz Jan 2019

Affirming The Purpose Of Affirmative Action: Understanding A Policy Of The Past To Move Towards A More Informed Future, Meagan Schantz

Writing Across the Curriculum

Affirmative action, a program started in the 1960s to address discrimination in employment, has always been controversial. Vigorous debate in the last several years has occurred over the application of affirmative action in higher education admissions. Recently, some of the country’s most elite institutions, including Harvard University and Yale University, have been the targets of lawsuits and intense public scrutiny. The purpose of this paper is to examine the origin and evolution of this scrutinized policy to better comprehend its current value. Overall, at the heart of its intended purpose, affirmative action is a critical and necessary policy; however, to …

Long Term Solutions To The Short-Term Problem: An Analysis Of The Current Legal Issues Related To Airbnb And Similar Short-Term Rental Companies With A Proposed Model Ordinance, Richard W.F. Swor Jan 2019

Long Term Solutions To The Short-Term Problem: An Analysis Of The Current Legal Issues Related To Airbnb And Similar Short-Term Rental Companies With A Proposed Model Ordinance, Richard W.F. Swor

Belmont Law Review

Airbnb and the short-term rental market have revolutionized the way that we travel and book accommodations, and now they are beginning to require cities to revolutionize their laws. This note argues that cities should adopt an ordinance that addresses health and safety, zoning, permitting, and taxation in an enforceable way by drawing on ideas already implemented in other cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, Nashville, and Portland. In support of this conclusion, this note begins in Section I by discussing the history of vacation rentals and the sharing economy as a whole, before discussing Airbnb more specifically. Section II then …

The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely Jan 2019

The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Contemporary American policing practices are marked by increasingly top-down, racialized, militarized, and pseudo-scientific features. Social scientists have played a central role in creating this political situation: social-scientific advocates of “law and order,” far from providing a value-neutral description of social reality, appear instead to have contributed to the creation of a peculiarly modern form of power.

Mass Atrocities And Their Prevention, Charles H. Anderton, Jurgen Brauer Jan 2019

Mass Atrocities And Their Prevention, Charles H. Anderton, Jurgen Brauer

Economics Department Working Papers

Counting conservatively, and ignoring physical injuries and mental trauma, data show about 100 million mass atrocity-related deaths since 1900. Occurring in war and in peacetime, and of enormous scale, severity, and brutality, they are geographically widespread, occur with surprising frequency, and can be long-lasting in their adverse effects on economic and human development, wellbeing, and wealth. As such, they are a major economic concern. This article synthesizes very diverse and widely dispersed theoretical and empirical literatures, addressing two gaps: a “mass atrocities gap” in the economics literature and an “economics gap” in mass atrocities scholarship. Our goals are, first, for …

Probabilistic Global Maps Of Crop-Specific Areas From 1961 To 2014, Nicole D. Jackson, Megan Konar, Peter Debaere, Lyndon Estes Jan 2019

Probabilistic Global Maps Of Crop-Specific Areas From 1961 To 2014, Nicole D. Jackson, Megan Konar, Peter Debaere, Lyndon Estes

Geography

Agriculture has substantial socioeconomic and environmental impacts that vary between crops. However, information on how the spatial distribution of specific crops has changed over time across the globe is relatively sparse. We introduce the Probabilistic Cropland Allocation Model (PCAM), a novel algorithm to estimate where specific crops have likely been grown over time. Specifically, PCAM downscales annual and national-scale data on the crop-specific area harvested of 17 major crops to a global 0.5-degree grid from 1961 to 2014. To do this, pixels are assigned into probability clusters based upon crop-specific pixel suitability (based on mean climate and soil characteristics) and …

Do Genetic Structure And Landscape Heterogeneity Impact Color Morph Frequency In A Polymorphic Salamander?, Maggie M. Hantak, Robert B. Page, Paul E. Converse, Carl D. Anthony, Shawn R. Kuchta

2019 Faculty Bibliography

Landscape heterogeneity plays an important role in population structure and divergence, particularly for species with limited vagility. Here, we used a landscape genetic approach to identify how landscape and environmental variables affect genetic structure and color morph frequency in a polymorphic salamander. The eastern red- backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus, is widely distributed in northeastern North America and contains two common color morphs, striped and unstriped, that are divergent in ecology, behavior, and physiology. To quantify population structure, rates of gene flow, and genetic drift, we amplified 10 microsatellite loci from 648 individuals across 28 sampling localities. This study was conducted …

Land Surveying In Early Pennsylvania: A Case Study In A Global Context, Marcus Gallo Jan 2019

Land Surveying In Early Pennsylvania: A Case Study In A Global Context, Marcus Gallo

2019 Faculty Bibliography

By the end of the seventeenth century, Anglo-Americans on both sides of the Atlantic accepted the importance of surveying to any system of land ownership. Most historians of colonial British have similarly taken colonial surveying practices as a given. This article complicates these assumptions through an examination of Pennsylvania in a wider context. In fact, land policy in colonial Anglo-America differed significantly from practices elsewhere in the early modern world. English colonizers embraced a model of settler colonialism that created a market for land, thus encouraging the proliferation of modern surveying practices.

Geographically Separated Orange And Blue Populations Of The Amazonian Poison Frog Adelphobates Galactonotus (Anura, Dendrobatidae) Do Not Differ In Alkaloid Composition Or Palatability, Adriana M. Jeckel, Sophie Kocheff, Ralph Saporito, Taran Grant Jan 2019

Geographically Separated Orange And Blue Populations Of The Amazonian Poison Frog Adelphobates Galactonotus (Anura, Dendrobatidae) Do Not Differ In Alkaloid Composition Or Palatability, Adriana M. Jeckel, Sophie Kocheff, Ralph Saporito, Taran Grant

2019 Faculty Bibliography

As is typical of chemically defended animals, poison frogs present high variability in their alkaloid-based defenses. Previous studies have shown that geographically separated color morphs of Oophaga and Dendrobates species differ in both alkaloid composition and arthropod palatability. Here, we tested the generality of that finding by studying the alkaloid composition and palatability of geographically separated blue and orange morphs of the splash-backed poison frog, Adelphobates galactonotus. We identified and quantified the alkaloid composition of each individual frog using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and evaluated the palatability of individual secretions to arthropods conducting feeding trials with Drosophila melanogaster. Despite their conspicuous …

The Story Of Worldwide Muscle Work (1800-2015), Paul Steenwyk, Matthew Kuperus Heun, Paul Brockway

Summer Research

Energy. It’s the driver of our lives, and our systems of production.

In many pre-industrial societies, one of the most widely used forms of energy that drives useful work is food.

People and animals need this food to fuel their labor, which has primarily been used for:

  1. Food production (ex. Farmers hoeing row crops, Oxen plowing fields)
  2. Transport of goods/people (ex. Horses carrying mail)

A model for the amount of food consumed for these purposes, and the amount of useful work produced was created for the span 1800-2015.

→ This is an in-depth analysis of how tourism impacts communities around the world, looking at four specific case studies, taking into account each nation’s human development index (HDI), population, location, and the number of tourists traveling to these destinations each year. The research concentrates on the strengths and weaknesses of each city’s tourist management practices, and then there are proposed solutions based on their needs and available resources. When talking about sustainable tourism, it is essential to understand it in terms of future maintainability. Sustainable tourism is defined as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future …

The Changing Role Of Public-Private Partnerships In Urban Transportation: A Case Study Of The Rise Of P3s In Denver, Co, Sylvia Arriaga Brady Jan 2019

The Changing Role Of Public-Private Partnerships In Urban Transportation: A Case Study Of The Rise Of P3s In Denver, Co, Sylvia Arriaga Brady

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the expanding role of public-private partnerships (PPPs or P3s) in Denver metro transportation projects in three areas: (1) innovative funding and financing of transit infrastructure projects, (2) the partnerships between freight and passenger rail services, and (3) emerging collaborations of local governments, transit agencies, and transportation network companies (TNCs).

The purpose of the first study was to examine the recent use of P3s in the Denver Regional Transportation District's (RTD) FasTracks program, a 2004 voter-approved $4.7 billion transit expansion program. After a shortfall in funding, RTD partnered with several private consortia to enable the FasTracks program to …

The Effects Of Ability Grouping On Kindergarten Students’ Readingachievement, Katie Nauman Jan 2019

The Effects Of Ability Grouping On Kindergarten Students’ Readingachievement, Katie Nauman

Journal of Applied and Educational Research (2017-2019)

The number of elementary students in the United States reading at a proficient level is significantly low. Elementary schools in the United States need to increase the number of students reading at the proficient level in order to move towards success in other subject areas, raise graduation rates, increase economic opportunities, and boost the likelihood of favorable long term health. Foundational reading skills, beginning in kindergarten, are an early predictor of future reading proficiency. Homogeneous ability grouping is one instructional strategy that can help students master foundational reading skills. Ability grouping is an educational practice that can be used with …

Vulnerability Of Resource Users In Louisiana’S Oyster Fishery To Environmental Hazards, Austin T. Humphries, Lauren I. Josephs, Megan K. La Peyre, Steven Hall, Rachel Dowty Beech Jan 2019

Vulnerability Of Resource Users In Louisiana’S Oyster Fishery To Environmental Hazards, Austin T. Humphries, Lauren I. Josephs, Megan K. La Peyre, Steven Hall, Rachel Dowty Beech

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Knowledge of vulnerability provides the foundation for developing actions that minimize impacts on people while maximizing the sustainability of ecosystem goods and services. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to determine how resource-dependent people are vulnerable to environmental hazards. This idea is particularly true in coastal Louisiana, USA, where the current era of rapid land loss has the potential to undermine oyster fisheries. However, little is known about how such environmental change might differentially affect resource users and stakeholders. We examined social components of vulnerability to environmental hazards using indicators of susceptibility and adaptive capacity within the oyster …
