“I Never Thought I Could Accomplish Something Like This”: The Success And Struggle Of Teaching College Courses In Jail, Brittnie L. Aiello, Emma Duffy-Comparone
Criminology Faculty Publications
In this article, we discuss the challenges and potential benefits of teaching in the “revolving-door” of the criminal justice system: county jails. Massachusetts jails hold pre-trial offenders as well as those serving sentences of up to 2.5 years. Over four semesters, we have learned that flexibility and creativity are necessary to navigate the challenges this heterogeneous population presents, not the least of which is a class in constant flux. In spite of many challenges of teaching in a jail, the classes we teach give students a recovered or newfound belief in their own self-worth and ability, opportunities for intellectual engagement, …
Assessing Teacher Practice And Effect On Student Growth Mindset And Grit, Derek Leininger
Assessing Teacher Practice And Effect On Student Growth Mindset And Grit, Derek Leininger
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study builds on existing research that has found that noncognitive factors, such as growth mindset and grit, can have a significant influence on positive long-term student outcomes. This study was designed to identify how teachers can promote these constructs with students. Research questions were designed to identify teachers roles in designing instruction, interacting with students, and viewing themselves as continual learners. Research was conducted at two different schools where staff members have been engaged in this work for several years. Within this study, teacher interviews were conducted, teachers were observed in classroom settings, teacher lesson plans were analyzed, teachers …

Investment In Human Capital And Labor Mobility: Evidence From A Shock To Property Rights, Christopher P. Clifford, William C. Gerken
Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers
We show that the assignment of property rights to client relationships affects employee behavior in the industry for financial advice. Our identification comes from staggered firm-level entry into the Protocol for Broker Recruiting. The protocol effectively transfers the ownership of the client relationship from the firm to the employee. We document that entering into the protocol increases employee labor mobility among member firms. Further, we find that upon protocol inclusion, employees are less likely to generate customer complaints and more likely to invest in their own general human capital, but less likely to invest in firm-specific human capital. We use …

Racialization In Islam And Christianity: A Theological Interfaith Exploration, Caitlinn Curry-Betteridge
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
This study explores and compares theological responses to racialization in the religious traditions of Islam and Christianity in the United States. Racialization here is broadly defined as the historic way in which people groups, social structures, and institutions are ascribed meaning and hierarchy based on cultural markers of ethnicity. Within the context of racialization, racism is a social construct that is used to subjugate certain ethnic groups based on physical traits and keep others in power; a system of advantages and disadvantages. The works of three Black American theologians from Islam: Carolyn Moxley Rouse, Sherman A. Jackson, and Su’ad Abdul …

Hungry Cities Partnership
There is some controversy on the applicability of the summand-based Household Food Security Assessment Score (HFIAS) and Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) as measures of food insecurity in urban areas in the Global South. These measures were primarily designed for measurement in rural communities where food insecurity itself was first identified and is still predominantly conceptualized. The objective of the research reported in this paper is to assess the internal and external validity of the HFIAS and the HDDS in determining food insecurity levels in an urban context, using HCP data for urban households in Windhoek, Namibia. Validation was performed …

No. 32: Wet Market Vendor Profits In Nanjing, China: A Spatial Analysis, Xinxan Qi, Taiyang Zhong, Zhenzhong Si, Xianjin Huang, Jonathan Crush
Hungry Cities Partnership
Wet markets play an important role in urban food security in many Asian countries. Existing research pays more attention to the wet market food accessibility of urban residents and less on the business operations and profits of wet market vendors. Based on a survey of 1,119 small food enterprises in Nanjing, this study employs the spatial analytical method Geodetector to explore spatial variations in vendor profits in Nanjing. The study shows obvious spatial differentiation in the profits of wet market vendors across the city and draws several conclusions. Profitability is mainly related to the demographic features of vendors, their business …

Meteorological Comparison Of Three Cave Systems, Matthew Wine
Meteorological Comparison Of Three Cave Systems, Matthew Wine
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Cave systems are home to delicate underground ecosystems that can be affected by changes in surface atmospheric conditions which in turn affect underground meteorology. Modern human use of caves is typically for tourism, so understanding surface-underground weather-climate interactions is important when caves carry streams that are prone to flooding in response to surface precipitation. The purpose of this research is to document the effects of surface weather conditions on cave meteorology in three different cave system types located in different geographic locations including an island, the central USA, and at high elevations in British Columbia. The study caves include Kaumana …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology
BACKGROUND: Malaria clinical outcomes vary by erythrocyte characteristics, including ABO blood group, but the effect of ABO blood group on asymptomatic, uncomplicated and placental Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) infection remains unclear. We explored effects of ABO blood group on asymptomatic, uncomplicated and placental falciparum infection in the published literature.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines. Articles in Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and Cochrane Library published before February 04, 2017 were searched without restriction. Studies were included if they reported P. falciparum infection incidence or prevalence, …

Southern Sympathies In Illinois As Expressed Through "Nelson Versus The People", Katherine Gosnell
Southern Sympathies In Illinois As Expressed Through "Nelson Versus The People", Katherine Gosnell
2019 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
During the antebellum period, Illinois proved to be problematic for the North. Geographically, it is a Northern State. Population wise, it was split between Northern and Southern tradition. Around the Chicago area, abolitionism had a strong pull as expressed by the various colored conventions held there, as well as the variety of Whig/Republican newspapers. From the state capital of Springfield and further south, many people held Democratic view points and could sympathize with their Southern neighbors. As Illinois had slave states on two sides, it is easy to understand how these neighbors had an impact on Illinoisan culture and politics. …

Joseph Knew First: Moses, The Egyptian Son, Nathan J. Arp
Joseph Knew First: Moses, The Egyptian Son, Nathan J. Arp
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
After about 1500 years of slumber, ancient Egyptian was brought back to life in the early 19th century, when scholars deciphered hieroglyphs. T his revolutionary success opened the door to a reevaluation of history from the viewpoint of ancient Egypt. In the wake of this new knowledge, the first scholar posited the idea in 1849 that the name of Moses stemmed from the Egyptian word for child. Subsequently, this idea was refined, and currently the majority of scholars believe Moses’s name comes from the Egyptian verb “to beget,” which is also the root for the Egyptian word for child, or …

Research And More Research, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have grown up with a plethora of information available to answer the questions they may have about the Gospel. This, in turn, has allowed discordant information to cause concern in many members, ultimately drawing some away from the Gospel. In a recent address to young, married members of the Church in Chicago, President Dallin H. Oaks advised that more research is often not the way to approach these concerns, but rather that members should rely on their faith in Jesus Christ. While many may not agree with this advice, …

Public Libraries As Anchor Institutions In Smart Communities: Current Practices And Future Development, Shannon Mersand, Mila Gasco-Hernandez, Emmanuel Udoh, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia
Center for Technology in Government
Local governments around the world are exploring different strategies to become smarter: more efficient, sustainable, and highly interconnected. However, many actors outside government need to be involved too.For instance, public libraries have the potential to play a very important role in the development of smart and connected communities, due to their strong legitimacy in the eyes of citizens and the types of services and programs they are already providing, which in many cases go well beyond what could be considered traditional library services. This paper analyzes innovative practices in public libraries and argues that they already show the potential of public libraries …

Center for Technology in Government
The digital divide not only refers to individuals, but also to inequalities in access to technology and the Internet across countries and across regions within the same country. For instance, lack of Internet access in rural areas has been identified as an important limitation to the development of those regions and to the effectiveness of government policies and programs that rely on a consistent and/or high-quality connection.Emergency preparedness and response could be greatly affected by the lack of timely and accurate information about a disaster such as floods, fires, and storms. This paper proposes a socio-technical framework that integrates a potential …
