Comparing Academic Performance Data Of Students In Single-Gender Classroom: Which Gender Benefits The Most, African-American Males Or African-American Females?, Daris F. Gore

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if single-gender settings have a statistically significant effect on African-American male and/or African-American female academic achievement on English assessment from sixth through eighth grade. Social science statistics were used to determine if a statistically significant difference occurred in the performance of African-American males and/or female students in single-gender classrooms compared to African-American male and female students in coed classrooms. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess if differences exist on a dependent variable (student achievement) by independent variables (instructional setting and gender). A statistically significant difference occurred among …

An Examination Of Teacher Concerns Beyond The Initial Stages Of A District's One-To-One Technology Adoption, Elicia Ramsey Massengill Jan 2019

An Examination Of Teacher Concerns Beyond The Initial Stages Of A District's One-To-One Technology Adoption, Elicia Ramsey Massengill

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the change process teachers experience during a technology adoption in an effort to understand how effective technology implementation comes about, what obstacles must be navigated, and what resources are needed for that navigation. The convergent parallel mixed-methods design used in this study provides both qualitative and quantitative data analyzed separately in a side-by-side comparison and then merged to develop a fuller understanding of high school teachers’ implementation of a one-to-one technology adoption 5 years after its inception in a rural North Carolina district. A purposive, stratified sample of 30 teachers, representing a …

Culture And Language: An Action Research Study On The Impact Of Integrating Culture Into A Chinese Language Immersion Program, Haibin Li

Education Dissertations and Projects

Though a framework for foreign language education exists, the lack of guidelines, proper implementation, and benchmarks, along with scarce research on the effects of implementing cultural aspects in immersion classrooms leaves foreign language educators in the dark. An action research study design was utilized in a second grade Chinese immersion program at a language academy, investigating the impacts of the inclusion of culture activities in the classroom. Areas included were cultural exposure, teaching methods, teaching materials, cross cultural education, and challenges. Research data collected included students’ unit test scores, journals, parent surveys, and parent interviews. Time practicing is important, yet …

The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh Jan 2019

The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh

International Journal of Peace Studies

The enormity of the world’s dislocated population generated by contemporary conflicts has brought significant attention to a complicated process of returning housing, land and property (HLP) to their rightful occupants once conditions permit. As the complexity of large-scale HLP restitution becomes increasingly apparent, significant obstacles emerge that require examination. This article describes how the ‘evidentiary bind’ is such an obstacle. This bind emerges when large-scale HLP restitution processes require titles and deeds to be in the possession of the population who are the least likely to have them—the forcibly displaced. The technical, legal and political inability to acknowledge and accept …

Rz-Tradeoff: A New Model To Estimate Riparian Water And Air Quality Functions, Yasaman T. Hassanzadeh, Philippe G. Vidon, Arthur J. Gold, Soni M. Pradhanang, Kelly Addy Lowder

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Riparian zones are often used as best management practices due to their ability to remove nitrate (NO3−) from subsurface flow. Research suggests that beyond local biogeochemical controls, the impact of riparian zones on nitrogen removal and other functions, such as phosphorus dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions, largely depends on land-use/land-cover, hydrogeomorphology, and weather. In this study, we therefore present RZ-TRADEOFF, a novel and easily applicable model that connects multiple riparian functions and characteristics (NO3− and phosphate (PO43−), concentration and removal in subsurface flow, total phosphorus (TP) removal in overland flow, nitrous oxide …

Modeling Spatiotemporal Abundance Of Mobile Wildlife In Highly Variable Environments Using Boosted Gamlss Hurdle Models, Adam Smith, Benjamin Hofner, Juliet S. Lamb, Jason Osenkowski, Taber Allison, Giancarlo Sadoti, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Peter W. C. Paton

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Modeling organism distributions from survey data involves numerous statistical challenges, including accounting for zero‐inflation, overdispersion, and selection and incorporation of environmental covariates. In environments with high spatial and temporal variability, addressing these challenges often requires numerous assumptions regarding organism distributions and their relationships to biophysical features. These assumptions may limit the resolution or accuracy of predictions resulting from survey‐based distribution models. We propose an iterative modeling approach that incorporates a negative binomial hurdle, followed by modeling of the relationship of organism distribution and abundance to environmental covariates using generalized additive models (GAM) and generalized additive models for location, scale, and …

Local Adaptation, Genetic Divergence, And Experimental Selection In A Foundation Grass Across The Us Great Plains’ Climate Gradient, Matthew Galliart, Nora Bello, Mary Knapp, Jesse Poland, Paul St Amand, Sara Baer, Brian Maricle Ph.D., Adam B. Smith, Loretta Johnson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many prior studies have uncovered evidence for local adaptation using reciprocal transplant experiments. However, these studies are rarely conducted for a long enough time to observe succession and competitive dynamics in a community context, limiting inferences for long-lived species. Furthermore, the genetic basis of local adaptation and genetic associations with climate has rarely been identified. Here, we report on a long-term (6-year) experiment conducted under natural conditions focused on Andropogon gerardii, the dominant grass of the North American Great Plains tallgrass ecosystem. We focus on this foundation grass that comprises 80% of tallgrass prairie biomass and is widely used in …

Consumer Considerations Of Local Value-Added Dairy Products In North Carolina's Triangle, Gabriel Adjei Agyekum Jan 2019

Consumer Considerations Of Local Value-Added Dairy Products In North Carolina's Triangle, Gabriel Adjei Agyekum

Theses

The global and domestic dairy markets promise exciting opportunities for companies willing to adapt to a continuously evolving consumer market. However, local dairy farmers face a myriad of challenges as they navigate low milk prices, shrinking margins, increasing production cost, and a rising demand for plant-based varieties of milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy-based foods. The goal of this research was to investigate consumer behavior towards value-added local dairy products in North Carolina’s Triangle cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Data were used from an overarching project with collected data from food consumers in the triangle tri-city area using …

Geographic Differences In The Dietary Quality Of Food Purchases Among Participants In The Nationally Representative Food Acquisition And Purchase Survey (Foodaps), Maya Vadiveloo, Elie Perraud, Haley W. Parker, Filippa Juul, Niyati Parekh

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Objective grocery transactions may reflect diet, but it is unclear whether the diet quality of grocery purchases mirrors geographic and racial/ethnic disparities in diet-related diseases. This cross-sectional analysis of 3961 households in the nationally representative Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey evaluated geographic and racial/ethnic disparities in grocery purchase quality. Respondents self-reported demographics and recorded purchases over 7 days; the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2015 assessed diet quality. Survey-weighted multivariable-adjusted regression determined whether there were geographic and racial/ethnic differences in HEI-15 scores. Respondents were, on average, 50.6 years, non-Hispanic white (NHW) (70.3%), female (70.2%), and had attended some college (57.8%). HEI-15 …

A Comment On: Arts Festivals, Urban Tourism And Cultural Policy, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2019

A Comment On: Arts Festivals, Urban Tourism And Cultural Policy, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

When I wrote the 2010 article 'Arts Festivals, Urban Tourism and Cultural Policy' for the special issue of JPRTL&E in 2010, the focus on the ‘urban’ in the brief that I was given very much reflected the prominent attention being given to festivals and events in urban contexts at that time (Johansson & Kociatkiewicz, 2011; Stevens & Shin, 2012). I start this brief comment now by noting that this imbalance in the literature is being addressed by a recent rise of research interest in the arts, including festivals, in rural areas (including forthcoming special issues/sections in the Journal of Rural …

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter presents vignettes from six countries regarding the phenomenon of Teaching Across Specialisations (TAS) or as it is often known teaching out-of-field. The vignettes provide an overview of the education system and policies and practices relating to teacher education, certification, recruitment and assignment to subjects or year levels. They also provide insights into how teaching out-of-field is conceptualised, if or how it is officially reported, its extent and importantly, any local, state or national responses to teaching out-of-field. The six countries included are Australia, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the USA and Indonesia. These countries have been selected because …

Gregorio Sancianco, Colonial Tribute, And Social Identities: On The Cusp Of Filipino Nationalist Consciousness, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

Gregorio Sancianco, the author of El Progreso de Filipinas (1881), is an ephemeral figure in Philippine history. Although somewhat known for his defense of the native against charges of indolence, Sancianco advanced a penetrating critique of colonial tribute that generally has been ignored but to which this article draws attention. Sancianco argued that tribute did not only negate the principle of assimilation, but it also divided the native population and provoked social antagonisms. The tribute's abolition in 1884 rendered Sancianco's historical position as transitional, straddling the creole nationalism of the 1860s and the ilustrados' colonial nationalism of the 1880s. …

Decision Makers’ Barriers To Climate And Extreme Weather Adaptation: A Study Of North Atlantic High- And Medium-Use Seaports, Elizabeth L. Mclean, Austin Becker

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

Decision-making barriers challenge port administrators to adapt and build resilience to natural hazards. Heavy rains, storms, sea level rise (SLR), and extreme heat can damage the critical coastal infrastructure upon which coastal communities depend. There is limited understanding of what impedes port decision makers from investing resources in climate and extreme weather adaptations. Through semi-structured interviews of 30 port directors/managers, environmental specialists, and safety planners at 15 medium- and high-use ports of the U.S. North Atlantic, this paper contributes a typology of seven key adaptation barriers. We measured shared knowledge of the identified barriers using a cultural consensus model (CCM). …

Background: Workplace or campus wellness/obesity-prevention policies and initiatives can improve health. Research tools to assess worksite or campus policies/initiatives are scarce. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop and validate the policies, opportunities, initiatives, and notable topics (POINTS) audit. Methods: POINTS was developed and refined via expert review, pilot-testing, and field testing. Trained researchers completed a web-based review from a student-focus or employee-focus regarding 34 health-promoting topics for colleges. Each topic was evaluated on a 0–2 scale: 0 = no policy/initiative, 1 = initiatives, 2 = written policy. When a written policy was detected, additional policy support questions …
