What Constitutes Environmental Displacement?: Challenges And Opportunities Of Exploring Connections Across Thematically Diverse Areas, Pablo Bose, Elizabeth Lunstrum Jan 2019

What Constitutes Environmental Displacement?: Challenges And Opportunities Of Exploring Connections Across Thematically Diverse Areas, Pablo Bose, Elizabeth Lunstrum

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2019

As the nascent RRN began to take shape its leadership, including then-director of CRS Susan McGrath, observed a consequential and somewhat surprising gap. While many of the other major thematic areas regarding refugee research—international legal regimes, policy analysis, educational opportunities, and integration initiatives among them—were key thematic areas for the network, environmental issues represented an important new area of both conceptual and practical concern, and largely fell beyond the realm of refugee research proper. As a result, she sought to draw together scholars in this emergent field to help create a new research cluster with an emphasis on networking, interdisciplinarity, …

King and Queen County believes that economic development is crucial to ensuring a stable economy and high quality of life for residents of the county. With an out-commuting rate of 71% for the entire Middle Peninsula region, residents and businesses are spending their money outside of the region due to a lack of job opportunities and commercial development. However, the intersection of Route 33 and The Trail at Shacklefords within King and Queen County provides a major economic development opportunity for King and Queen County and the Middle Peninsula region.

Sex Work And Empowerment: Migrant Women Looking For Love, Breanna A. Harkins Jan 2019

Sex Work And Empowerment: Migrant Women Looking For Love, Breanna A. Harkins

The Corinthian

This paper will address the issues regarding consensual female sex work and whether this is a legitimate form of work or an appropriate lifestyle for women to hold. Research collected from various countries and cultures conclude that sexual labor is a common, but often underappreciated, means of income for women. In China, India, Ethiopia, and Hungary we see an intersection between the women interviewed and how their stories, while different, all lead towards a very similar conclusion and realization: female sex work is empowering.

The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson Jan 2019

The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

It is obvious that there is a variety of perspectives that the educational environment needs to sensitively reflect to serve a diverse society equitably. In Southern communities, in particular, distortions of heritage are conflated with local governance that control public money, public memory, public value, public health, and public landscape, including the public school environment and marginalizes further historically marginalized groups. This qualitative study was grounded in critical race and cultural geography theories that examined dominant paradigms in the educational environment which shape identity. This dissertation explored the effect(s) of race and racism in the educational environment from the perspective …

Glass And Enamel Beadmaking In Normandy, Circa 1590-1635, Brad Loewen Jan 2019

Glass And Enamel Beadmaking In Normandy, Circa 1590-1635, Brad Loewen

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The archaeological study of glass bead proveniences raises theoretical questions regarding the idea of “beadmaking centers” as defined by typological, technological, and geochemical means. Also important for defining beadmaking centers are historical sources in various languages. In the 19th century, French scholars interested in glassmaking in Normandy noted beadmaking ca. 1590-1635. Their publications show a rural cottage industry in the county of Eu and the forest of Brotonne, and an urban guild of patenôtriers in Rouen. While the historical data mostly show the production and export of rosary beads, the Normandy “beadmaking center” coincides with a major outfitting region of …

Mixed Messages: How The Free Press Has A Responsibility To We The People At The Marketplace Of Ideas, Addison O’Donnell Jan 2019

Mixed Messages: How The Free Press Has A Responsibility To We The People At The Marketplace Of Ideas, Addison O’Donnell

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Free Press makes possible a fair democracy. It exerts influence on our communities and our consciences, principally in the form of reporting facts through its account of events, endorsing certain viewpoints through editorials, and ultimately producing the “first rough draft of history.” How the public responds to the Free Press speaks to the historic and continued expectation that many different voices should present divergent messages and allow the people to decide which message is the truth. Risks taken by the Free Press in the name of truth enable the theory of our Constitution to endure by facilitating the unbridled …

Perceptions Of Safety Within The Bridgewater State University Community, Stephen M. Sinko

Master’s Theses and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative research study was to examine administration, faculty, staff, and student’s perceptions of safety within a large university community in the American Northeast. Previous research has been done at other educational institutions primarily in the American South and West, but research such as this has been limited in the Northeastern area of the United States. An online survey was sent using a combination of convenient and snowball sampling. Participants in this survey include administration, faculty, staff, and students from the campus community. Results suggest that individuals who took this survey felt moderately safe while on campus. …

Hybridization And Rapid Differentiation After Secondary Contact Between The Native Green Anole (Anolis Carolinensis) And The Introduced Green Anole (Anolis Porcatus), Johanna E. Wegener, Jessica N. Pita-Aquino, Jessica Atutubo, Adam Moreno, Jason J. Kolbe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In allopatric species, reproductive isolation evolves through the accumulation of genetic incompatibilities. The degree of divergence required for complete reproductive isolation is highly variable across taxa, which makes the outcome of secondary contact between allopatric species unpredictable. Since before the Pliocene, two species of Anolis lizards, Anolis carolinensis and Anolis porcatus, have been allopatric, yet this period of independent evolution has not led to substantial species‐specific morphological differentiation, and therefore, they might not be reproductively isolated. In this study, we determined the genetic consequences of localized, secondary contact between the native green anole, A. carolinensis, and the introduced …

Twenty-Three Unsolved Problems In Hydrology (Uph): A Community Perspective, Eric Lindquist Jan 2019

Twenty-Three Unsolved Problems In Hydrology (Uph): A Community Perspective, Eric Lindquist

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2019

This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused …

Public Land Management On The Upper Mississippi: Exploring Relationships Between Management Imperatives And Ecosystem Biodiversity, Hunter Colleen Ridley Jan 2019

Public Land Management On The Upper Mississippi: Exploring Relationships Between Management Imperatives And Ecosystem Biodiversity, Hunter Colleen Ridley

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Presently, public land management structure tends to disregard the interconnected nature of the social and ecological systems within managed landscapes. Since these social and ecological systems so heavily influence the identity of landscapes, it is critical that land managers understand the interactions and effects land management has with ecological structure and function. This knowledge helps land managers create more effective, sustainable, and efficient management plans and decisions. This research uses a portion of Upper Mississippi River as a case study for analyzing and discussing public land management on the Mississippi and how its structure may be influencing the ecological identity …

Blockchain Technology - China's Bid To High Long-Run Growth, Tyler J. Mann Jan 2019

Blockchain Technology - China's Bid To High Long-Run Growth, Tyler J. Mann

Gettysburg Economic Review

Despite having the second largest economy at $13 trillion, China has only recently surpassed the World Bank’s definition of the ‘middle-income range’ which is a gross national income per capita between $1,000 to $12,000 (constant 2011 international $). This is a noteworthy accomplishment since many other developing nations have fallen victim to economic stagnation within this range leading to the term “middle-income trap”. This paper will argue that one of the ways in which China escaped the middle-income trap and will continue to grow its economic influence is through the support of blockchain technology. Research and development, early technological adoption …

The Best Of Both Skills: U.S. Immigration, Work Visas, And Local Labor Shortages In Missouri, Adriano Udani Jan 2019

The Best Of Both Skills: U.S. Immigration, Work Visas, And Local Labor Shortages In Missouri, Adriano Udani

Center for Applied Economics

In spite of political rhetoric condemning immigrants’ contributions to the United States, scholars have persistently demonstrated positive social and economic contributions of immigrants. Studies such as these pose important policy implications for Missouri. To what extent does immigration contribute to recent Missouri economic outcomes? How are immigrant workers distributed across Missouri? Are there positive economic outcomes associated only with immigration of high-skilled workers? My analysis shows that higher per capita personal income and higher employment in certain industrial sectors are not solely attributed to high-skill workers. The results here suggest that economic productivity in Missouri is attributed to having a …

Exploring The Challenges To Sustainable Rural Drinking Water Services In Chile, Jami Nelson-Nuñez, Jeffrey P. Walters, Denisse Charpentier

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Many countries around the world now face the dual challenges of closing the remaining gaps in access to drinking water in rural areas while further addressing the issues of equity, quality, and sustainability outlined in the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our research explores the key factors for sustainability in rural drinking water services in Chile, an important example not only due to its success in rural water access but also because of the new directions the country is taking to achieve the SDGs. Drawing on results from a Delphi study of Chilean rural water experts, we discuss the most …

Balance Billing In Idaho 2019, Benjamin Larsen, Matthew May, Cheong Kim, Vanessa Crossgrove Fry Jan 2019

Balance Billing In Idaho 2019, Benjamin Larsen, Matthew May, Cheong Kim, Vanessa Crossgrove Fry

Idaho Policy Institute Reports

There is growing concern about the financial burden of balance billing, or surprise billing, on individuals with private health insurance plans. Idaho has limited provisions concerning balance billing, but none that protect patients who are unaware they are receiving services outside their insurance carrier’s network. Idaho residents receiving emergency care or major surgeries often do not choose their treating physicians, putting them at risk of being charged staggering amounts for out-of-network services. Research shows that balance billing disparities exist between geographic areas and service type which may point to private health insurance network inadequacies.

Half of states have full or …
