Recognizing And Addressing Risk Ambiguity In Sea Level Rise Adaptation Planning: A Case Study Of Miami-Dade County, Florida, Mary Ann Rozance Jan 2019

Recognizing And Addressing Risk Ambiguity In Sea Level Rise Adaptation Planning: A Case Study Of Miami-Dade County, Florida, Mary Ann Rozance

Dissertations and Theses

As coastal cities around the world identify and implement adaptations to sea level rise, they are faced with competing interests around what should be done and how to prioritize actions. Often, environmental problems--like confronting the challenge of sea level rise--are posed as requiring expert driven, technical solutions to identify and mitigate risks across the landscape. This framing, however, ignores the way in which diverse knowledge can help inform long-term planning horizons that address complex ways that sea level rise affects communities. The failure to integrate diverse knowledge into sea level rise adaptation can result in barriers to implementation and outcomes …

Complex Network Modeling And Visualization Analysis For Ocean Observation Data, Sun Xin, Zhenhua Li, Junyu Dong, Xinyan Luo, Yuting Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Ocean data analysis is one of the important foundations in marine science research. Analysis on the sea surface temperature based on complex network theory helps explore the marine dynamics in a new perspective. The ocean is divided into grids, and the annual average of the sea surface temperature is calculated to reflect the properties of the corresponding grid area. The mutual information and the Pearson correlation coefficient are used to measure the similarity between different areas. The nonlinear and linear complex network models which reflect the station of the global marine climate can be built. Finally some popular measures …

Southern History On Screen, Bryan M. Jack Jan 2019

Southern History On Screen, Bryan M. Jack

Civil Rights

Hollywood films have been influential in the portrayal and representation of race relations in the South and how African Americans are cinematically depicted in history, from The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Gone with the Wind (1939) to The Help (2011) and 12 Years a Slave (2013). With an ability to reach mass audiences, films represent the power to influence and shape the public's understanding of our country's past, creating lasting images—both real and imagined—in American culture.

In Southern History on Screen: Race and Rights, 1976–2016, editor Bryan Jack brings together essays from an international roster of scholars …

Putting Research To Action: Integrating Collaborative Governance And Community-Engaged Research For Community Solar, Emily Prehoda, Richelle Winkler, Chelsea Schelly

Department of Social Sciences Publications

Community solar involves the installation of a solar electricity system that is built in one central location with the costs and benefits distributed across voluntary investors who choose to subscribe and receive credits based on the generated energy. Community solar is gaining attention because of its potential to increase access to renewable energy and to democratize energy governance. This paper reflects on community-engaged research experiences in two rural community case studies in Michigan, USA, focusing on obstacles that were experienced during the research process rather than empirical findings from the research. We highlight difficulties we experienced to help advance a …

Cross-Mediterranean Egyptian Migrants: A Discursive Analysis, Sara Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how the Egyptian migrant subject who chooses to cross the Mediterranean through irregular means to reach Europe is discursively constructed in Egyptian media, particularly in the wake of the 2016 Rashid boat sinking. In both official and public discourse, this highly visible and well-documented accident raised questions on accountability and the role of the state in this situation. By identifying and analyzing the themes represented throughout a diverse collected fieldwork corpus of various Egyptian media, statements by public officials and organizations, newspaper articles and editorials, television talk show programming, and popular cultural production, this thesis offers a …

Understanding The Neighborhood Concentration Of Affluent Black Households In The 1990'S, Ronald W. Malega Jan 2019

Understanding The Neighborhood Concentration Of Affluent Black Households In The 1990'S, Ronald W. Malega

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

This study examines the intersection of race, class, and place by exploring the neighborhood concentration of affluent black households in the United States during the 1990s using Census 2000 data. It adds to the literature seeking a more nuanced understanding of the black community. The author assesses the theories of spatial assimilation and place stratification in understanding the processes associated with the neighborhood-level concentration of affluent black households. Regression analyses reveal that, in general, such concentrations are positively associated with black neighborhood socioeconomic status and negatively associated with white status. Furthermore, neighborhood quality and demographic factors are important for understanding …

Modeling And Simulation Of Travelers’ Route Choice Behavior Based On Disequilibrium Theory, Zhongxiang Huang, Jianhui Wu, Aiwu Kuang, Zhang Sheng, Xu Yan Jan 2019

Modeling And Simulation Of Travelers’ Route Choice Behavior Based On Disequilibrium Theory, Zhongxiang Huang, Jianhui Wu, Aiwu Kuang, Zhang Sheng, Xu Yan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Considering the influence of heterogeneous travel on traffic flow distribution, the travelers’ route choice behaviors are classified into three types: price regulation, quantity regulation and price-quantity regulation. Three day-to-day dynamical stochastic assignment models based on the disequilibrium theory are established, and the existence, uniqueness, and stability of the solutions to these models are proved. Through model simulation, it proved that each path flow in these three models can converge to a steady state after a finite travel adjustment, and the day-to-day dynamical stochastic assignment model under price-quantity regulation can simulate the influence of heterogeneous travel behaviors on the distribution …

The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin Jan 2019

The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

ABSTRACT: This article locates the ‘principal inn’ within the physical and cultural space of the eighteenth-century British town. The principal inn was the all-purpose venue for the sociable activities of polite society: from dining, drinking and conversing with friends to business deals, meetings of club and societies, legal proceedings, military musters, civic and religious proceedings. Through their central location, carefully designed interior spaces and refined material culture of furniture, fixtures and fittings, principal inns were key sites in the elite control of urban space, the enforcement of social hierarchies and the reinforcement of social values.

Digital Environment And Social Exclusion In Nigeria: Roles Of Libraries And Other Information Service Providing Institutions, Florence Onyeisi Otonekwu, Janet Titilayo Oludipe, Grace Olabisi Babafemi, Akawu Lami, Tunde Toyese Oyedokun

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Social exclusion is more or less a deliberate act of negligence, wherefore group of people in society are disengaged from mainstream culture because of their background, geographical location and other demographical characteristics that demarcate them from others. Social exclusion is an omnibus term, which encompasses many multidimensional social variables such as inequalities of opportunity, lack of access to basic amenities, digital divide and many more. However, for the sake of this current study, emphasis would be on digital divide existing between urban and rural settlers, in respect of their accessibility to information in today digital age. This study is a …
