Legumes, Livestock And Livelihoods In The Australian Mixed Farming System, E. C. Wolfe Nov 2019

Legumes, Livestock And Livelihoods In The Australian Mixed Farming System, E. C. Wolfe

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This Howard Oration describes the pathway that I have taken towards my specialisation in ‘big picture’ agriculture. A simple protocol is presented for the analysis of agricultural systems by using descriptive or quantitative indicators of five system properties: productivity, sustainability, profitability, social wellbeing and political acceptability. These properties are further illustrated by considering four important issues in the Australian sheep-wheat belt, a distinctive world food production system. The issues are the supply of and demand for legume nitrogen for crops, reconciling agricultural and natural resource objectives, the low profitability of farms in relation to production and marketing risks, and the …

Does Intensification Of Grassland And Forage Use Lead To Efficient, Profitable And Sustainable Ecosystems?, Oene Oenema, Cecile De Klein, Marta Alfaro

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The increasing demand for safe and nutritional dairy and beef products in our globalizing world, together with the needs to increase resource use efficiency and to protect biodiversity, provide strong incentives for intensification of grassland and forage use. This paper addresses the question in the title. Firstly, we present some notions about ‘intensification of agricultural production’. Secondly, we discuss the intensification of grassland-based dairy production in The Netherlands (NL), Chile and New Zealand (NZ). Finally, we arrive at some conclusions. External driving forces and ‘the law of the optimum’ provide strong incentives for intensification, i.e., for increasing the output per …

New Frontiers And Perspectives In Grassland Technology, Jürgen Schellberg, E. Verbruggen Nov 2019

New Frontiers And Perspectives In Grassland Technology, Jürgen Schellberg, E. Verbruggen

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grassland scientists and farmers are increasingly faced with emerging new technologies and in-formation systems that have been primarily developed by engineering sciences in particular: precision agriculture, remote sensing, geographic localization and biotechnology. Whether the implementation of any of these technologies may be beneficial in economic and ecological respect is a challenging judgment call, especially for those who have to carry over that decision on their farm. Compared to arable land, new technologies have been applied on grassland only partially and with some delay. However, as we will demonstrate, there is place for a successful implementation of new technologies in various …

Fantasy, Affect, And Pan-Asianism: Mariano Ponce, The First Philippine Republic’S Foreign Emissary, 1898–1912, Nicole Cuunjieng; Aboitiz

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines Mariano Ponce’s Asianist thought and his work to promote a Pan-Asianist alliance, actively participating in the overthrow of Western imperialism and the revitalization of Asia. Ponce’s interest in Japan, Asia, and the Malays ran deeper than mere revolutionary and reformist instrument, however, as his lifelong scholarship shows. Thisarticle focuses on the neglected affective and material dimensions of “peripheral” Pan-Asianism in order to make it legible to the Northeast Asian-centric “center” of the discourse and to reframe the broader history of Pan-Asianism to include Southeast Asia and specifically the Philippines.KEYWORDS: PAN-ASIANISM • JAPAN • MARIANO PONCE • PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION …

Panahon And Bagay: Metonymy And The Close Reading Of Dictionaries To Understand Filipino Temporality, Christian Jil Benitez Nov 2019

Panahon And Bagay: Metonymy And The Close Reading Of Dictionaries To Understand Filipino Temporality, Christian Jil Benitez

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle demonstrates how the close reading of words used in lexicographic definitions of the word panahon point to a Filipino understanding of temporality. These definitions resort to metonymy to concretize the abstract. Although different meanings cloud its meaning, panahon is understandable in a given instance when it refers coincidentally to something else. Etymologically, panahon is related to nahon and taon, which embody the opportune and the material, suggesting that panahon is articulable through the encounter of things (bagay), whose thinghood/appropriateness is knowable only by chance (pagkakataon). Kasaysayan (history) is a bagay that is always implicated in the panahon it attemptsto …

Scholarship On And From The Margins: Festschrift In Honor Of Resil B. Mojares, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr., Michael D.; Pante, Caroline S. Hau

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

A motif that runs through thearticles in this special double issue in honor of Resil B. Mojares is the fecundity of the geographic and social margins. Mojares himself celebrates the margin as a “good place to be in” for a writer, who, he emphasizes, must not lapse into isolationism and parochialism. Thearticles in this issue exemplify scholarship from and on the margins, which are expansive in orientation, yielding fresh insights that challenge current interpretations and giving rise to new historiographies.KEYWORDS: MARGIN • PERIPHERY • HISTORIOGRAPHY • RESIL MOJARES

Limahong’S Pirates, Ming Mariners, And Early Sino–Spanish Relations: The Pangasinan Campaign Of 1575 And Global History From Below, J. Travis; Shutz

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

In late November 1574, the notorious Limahong and his pirates arrived in the Philippine archipelago. Previous studies have focused on their infamous Manila raid. Cross-examining Ming Chinese and Spanish sources, the present study examines the campaign to capture them in Pangasinan in 1575, which reveals a temporary tripartite Sino–Spanish–Luzonese antipiracy alliance that is occluded in contemporary sources. This study highlights global history based on transregional linkages as embodied by Limahong’s marauding pirates who, as nonstate actors, precipitated state-to-state contact between South China and the Philippine archipelago but whose escape in August 1575 unraveled early Sino–Spanish relations.KEYWORDS: MARITIME PREDATION • SPANISH …

Gregorio Sancianco, Colonial Tribute, And Social Identities: On The Cusp Of Filipino Nationalist Consciousness, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Gregorio Sancianco, the author of El Progreso de Filipinas (1881), is an ephemeral figure in Philippine history. Although somewhat known for his defense of the native against charges of indolence, Sancianco advanced a penetrating critique of colonial tribute that generally has been ignored but to which thisarticle draws attention. Sancianco argued that tribute did not only negate the principle of assimilation, but it also divided the native population and provoked social antagonisms. The tribute’s abolition in 1884 rendered Sancianco’s historical position as transitional, straddling the creole nationalism of the 1860s and the ilustrados’ colonial nationalism of the 1880s. Sancianco’s critique …

The Rise Of Filipino Postcolonial Knowledge: Philippine Studies, The Institute Of Philippine Culture, And The Ateneo De Manila University Press, Charlie Samuya; Veric

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

A contribution to the yet unwritten histories of Philippine Studies (PS), the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC), and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Press, thisarticle examines the rise of Filipino postcolonial institutions of knowledge production in the shadow of the Cold War. It argues that PS, IPC, and ADMU Press constituted a coherent and coordinated network that sought to establish a postcolonial culture of knowledge production after 1946. Moreover, their development signaled the rise of decolonizing thought that coincided with the emergence of Cold War area studies.KEYWORDS: POSTCOLONIAL KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION • INTELLECTUAL HISTORY • COLD WAR • DECOLONIZATION • …

Long-Term Aerosol Trends And Variability Over Central Saudi Arabia Using Optical Characteristics From Solar Village Aeronet Measurements, Mohammed Al Otaibi, Ashraf Farahat, Bassam Tawabini, M. Hafidz Omar, Emad Ramadan, Abdelgadir Abuelgasim, Ramesh Singh

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Natural and anthropogenic aerosols over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) play a major role in affecting the regional radiation budget. The long-term variability of these aerosols’ physical and optical parameters, including aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Ångström exponent (α), were measured at a location near central KSA using the Solar Village (SV) AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) station during the period December 1999–January 2013. The AERONET measurements show an overall increase in AOD on an annual basis. This upward trend is mainly attributed to a prolonged increase in the monthly/seasonal mean AOD during March–June and during August– September. In contrast, …

A Longitudinal Approach To Examining The Socio-Economic Resilience Of The Alento District (Italy) To Land Degradation—1950 To Present, Rosanna Salvia, Claire L. Kelly, Geoff A. Wilson, Giovanni Quaranta Nov 2019

A Longitudinal Approach To Examining The Socio-Economic Resilience Of The Alento District (Italy) To Land Degradation—1950 To Present, Rosanna Salvia, Claire L. Kelly, Geoff A. Wilson, Giovanni Quaranta

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Land degradation is a multifaceted phenomenon. In many mountainous and hilly areas that are marginal in terms of their economic and social sustainability, degradation is closely linked to population decline through ageing and outmigration, and to the abandonment of land, leading to a loss of community resilience. These processes acting together can produce positive feedback loops, with the consequential loss of socio-economic resilience at larger spatial scales that can ultimately lead to the disintegration of entire territories. Drawing on recent advances in defining, integrating, and operationalizing the measurement of resilience, this paper took a new approach by exploring changing resilience …

John Dewey's Rival Versions Of Virtue, Jeff Mitchell Nov 2019

John Dewey's Rival Versions Of Virtue, Jeff Mitchell

Education and Culture

In 1932 Dewey and Tufts issued an extensively revised edition of their famous Ethics of 1908. Both versions are now available as public domain resources on the Internet, and teachers are likely to assign the second edition, since it reflects the authors’ mature views. However, at least as regards Dewey’s treatment of virtue, I argue that the earlier version is pedagogically superior to the later one. I contend that the revised treatment of virtue is in fact less true to the book’s celebrated genetic approach, and that the first edition also makes better use of the cultural resources that Dewey …

Food Insecurity: Deconstructing Its Predictors And Relationship To Hiv Medication Adherence, Lacey Critchley Nov 2019

Food Insecurity: Deconstructing Its Predictors And Relationship To Hiv Medication Adherence, Lacey Critchley

Open Access Dissertations

In recent years, increasing attention and research has been placed on how to better engage people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in the HIV care continuum, as treatment for HIV/AIDS is now extremely effective. However, several marginalized populations continue to be disproportionately affected by the virus, hampering efforts to end the epidemic. Substance users remain one of the most difficult groups to engage and retain in HIV care and often have unsuppressed poorly controlled HIV infection as a result of inadequate antiretroviral (ART) adherence. Research shows substance users are also more likely to have multiple co-occurring social syndemics and engage in …

A Study Of Upper Ocean Dynamic Features Based On Advanced Coherent Marine Radar Techniques, Lisa Nyman Nov 2019

A Study Of Upper Ocean Dynamic Features Based On Advanced Coherent Marine Radar Techniques, Lisa Nyman

Open Access Dissertations

During three research cruises in the Pacific, a vertically-polarized X-band Doppler Marine Radar (DMR) was installed onboard the research vessels. One of the goals during these cruises was to measure near-surface currents. Ocean currents have been measured with marine radar since the 1980’s using the dispersion shell technique. However, currents measured in this classical way cannot resolve fine-scale current variations. To fill this gap, the Doppler Velocity Synthesis algorithm (DoVeS) is developed to synthesize radial Doppler velocity information from a moving ship in order to obtain a two-dimensional surface current vector field around the ship track. During the first cruise, …

Organizational Capacity Of Nonprofit Organizations In Rural Areas Of The United States: A Scoping Review, Jayme E. Walters

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Rural America is facing a plethora of problems related to poverty, crime, health, and education. Nonprofit organizations serve a vital role in rural communities by providing services and advocacy to residents. Yet, it is unknown if rural nonprofits have the means to effectively address the complex issues before them. This study examines the results of scoping review which characterizes the state of empirical knowledge regarding the organizational capacity of rural nonprofits in the United States. Fifteen articles from the past decade uncovered challenges and strengths related to organizational capacity, though more research is necessary to inform funders and educators.

Vegetation, Rainfall, And Pulsing Hydrology In The Pantanal, The World's Largest Tropical Wetland, Sarah J. Ivory, Michael M. Mcglue, Stephanie Spera, Aguinaldo Silva, Ivan Bergier

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services and play a central role in global carbon cycling. Changes in rainfall and the flood-pulse are likely to disrupt the processes that maintain these landscapes; further, landscape modification may dramatically alter wetlands and promote terrestrialization. The Pantanal, South America, is the world's largest wetland due to flooding along the Upper Paraguay River. Predicting how water resources in the Pantanal may change is problematic due to a complex drainage network, resulting in the out-of-phase timing of rainfall and the flood pulse. We use remote sensing data of vegetation and climate to better understand the relationships among …

Investment In A Smaller World: The Implications Of Air Travel For Investors And Firms, Zhi Da, Umit G. Gurun, Bin Li, Mitch Warachka

Business Faculty Articles and Research

A large literature reports that proximity influences investment. We extend the measurement of proximity beyond distance and report that air travel reduces local investment bias. This result is confirmed using the initiation of connecting flights through recently opened air hubs because investment at destinations served by these connecting flights increases after, not before, their initiation. Air travel also broadens the investor base of firms and lowers their cost of equity by approximately 1%. Overall, air travel improves the diversification of investor portfolios and lowers the cost of equity for firms.

© 2019 The Author(s). Background: Baboons (genus Papio) and geladas (Theropithecus gelada) are now generally recognized as close phylogenetic relatives, though morphologically quite distinct and generally classified in separate genera. Primate specific Alu retrotransposons are well-established genomic markers for the study of phylogenetic and population genetic relationships. We previously reported a computational reconstruction of Papio phylogeny using large-scale whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of Alu insertion polymorphisms. Recently, high coverage WGS was generated for Theropithecus gelada. The objective of this study was to apply the high-Throughput "poly-Detect" method to computationally determine the number of Alu insertion polymorphisms shared by T. …

Material And Seismic Assessment Of The Great House At Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, Arizona, Douglas W. Porter, Anjali Mehrotra, Matthew J. Dejong, Angelyn Bass, Matthew Guebard, John Ochsendorf

United States National Park Service: Publications

The authors characterized earthen wall materials and plasters in a mid-fourteenth-century Hohokam great house at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument (Arizona) and assessed the seismic susceptibility of its puddled earth walls. Characterization included determining the microstructure, microcomposition, porosity, aggregate mineralogy, and identification of phases in the binding matrix for each of 36 samples and reconstructing plaster technologies, including material selection, preparation, and application sequences. Findings support the ideas that earthen materials were manipulated to optimize their performance to suit the unique site conditions and needs of the ancient people using the structure and included finishes that were unusual in southwestern …
