The Street View Of Property, Vanessa Casado Perez Feb 2019

The Street View Of Property, Vanessa Casado Perez

UC Law Journal

Parking on public streets is scarce. The current allocation system for parking spots based on the rule of capture coupled with low parking fees creates a tragedy of the commons scenario. The misallocation of parking has consequences for commerce, for access to public spaces, and for pollution and congestion. Municipalities have not widely adopted the solution that economists propose to solve this scarcity problem: increase the price. Politics aside, the reluctance of municipalities to do so may be explained by the unique nature of public property as reflected in well-rooted legal and societal constraints. This unique nature helps explain, for …

Appetite For Growth: Challenges To Scale For Food And Beverage Makers In Three Us Cities, Greg Schrock, Marc Doussard, Laura Wolf-Powers, Steven Marotta, Max Eisenburger

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Food and beverage (FaB) manufacturing represents a promising opportunity for small-scale “makers” and local economic development. The growth of entrepreneurial maker businesses can be understood in terms of segmentation of market demand, emergence of new intermediaries, and availability of affordable production infrastructure. Yet the ease of starting maker businesses stands in contrast with the challenges of achieving growth and scale as a manufacturer. Through semistructured interviews with 31 FaB makers in Chicago, New York City, and Portland, Oregon, the authors analyze the challenges facing maker–entrepreneurs in this sector. The authors find that the everyday character of food and the relative …

Traitors In The Service Of The Lord: The Role Of Church And Clergy In Appalachia's Civil War, Sheilah Elwardani Feb 2019

Traitors In The Service Of The Lord: The Role Of Church And Clergy In Appalachia's Civil War, Sheilah Elwardani

Masters Theses

Studies of the guerrilla war in the central and southern Appalachian Mountains reveal repeated instances of violence and threats directed at the pastors of mountain churches. Instances of churches being burned, pastors and laymen beaten and at times murdered are sprinkled throughout the primary source materials. The question raised here is why were pastors and specific churches being targeted for violence? The church was the center of the life for secluded Appalachian communities, church leadership carried tremendous weight in influencing loyalties. Research focused solely on the Dunkard Church in Floyd County, Virginia revealed that amidst a particularly violent guerrilla war, …

No Evidence Of “Weaponized Title Ix” Here: An Empirical Assessment Of Sexual Misconduct Reporting, Case Processing, And Outcomes, Tara N. Richards Feb 2019

No Evidence Of “Weaponized Title Ix” Here: An Empirical Assessment Of Sexual Misconduct Reporting, Case Processing, And Outcomes, Tara N. Richards

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Little is known about actual incidents of gender-based violence reported by college students or the campus adjudication process or outcomes of reported cases. Data from Annual Security Reports (ASRs) and Title IX Coordinators was used to examine the context, processes, and outcomes of reported incidents of sexual misconduct (n=1,054) at Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) in a Mid-Atlantic state. Results showed that ASRs undercounted incidents of sexual misconduct. Few incidents reported to Title IX Coordinators resulted in a formal Title IX complaint, and fewer still resulted in a finding of responsibility or suspension/expulsion of the responsible student. The primary outcome …

Reflection On And For Actions: Probing Into English Language Art Teachers' Personal And Professional Experiences With English Language Learners, Huili Hong, Karin Keith, Renee Rice Moran

ETSU Faculty Works

Effective ELL teaching and learning is profoundly influenced by the teachers' personal experiences and personalities (Farrell, 2016), their experience as language learners as well as language teachers (Farrell, 2007), and their beliefs about learning and teaching a second language (Farrell, 2015; Farrell & Ives, 2015). This study honored and examined in-depth the often-discounted stories/reflective narratives of our teachers. This paper reports a qualitative cases study that explores three veteran teachers' reflection on their personal and professional experiences with ELLs for self-discovery over years (Cirocki & Farrell, 2017) so that they can further reflect for their future actions with ELLs (Burns …

Changing Trends And Emerging Themes: Teaching And Learning In Post-Secondary Mathematics Classrooms, Sandra Baldwin, Vicki Squires

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Educational institutions face increasing pressures to respond to the changing environment, including the rapid advances in technology. All curricula are subject to scrutiny, but arguably the sciences and mathematics curricula are under a special lens, given the impact of changing technology and the increasing importance accorded to the knowledge economy. This paper explores the continuing dialogue regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics including the transition from secondary to post-secondary and the emergent trends in the field of mathematics education. The recent evolution of mathematics teaching is described and the implications for the future of mathematics teaching are highlighted, including …

Potensi Wilayah Terdampak Keruntuhan Bendungan Matenggeng Di Sungai Cijolang, Bagus Prio Utomo, Adam Pramudji Rahardjo, Djoko Legono Feb 2019

Potensi Wilayah Terdampak Keruntuhan Bendungan Matenggeng Di Sungai Cijolang, Bagus Prio Utomo, Adam Pramudji Rahardjo, Djoko Legono

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

Matenggeng Dam, which plans to be built on the Cijolang River, is a multifunctional dam that has many benefits for communities to irrigate irrigation, raw water, flood control, power generation and tourism. Besides having many benefits, dam construction also keeps very high potential hazards. One of the potential hazards that can occur is the dam breach caused by a crack due to water going over the crest (overtopping) or fracture due to seepage in the body of the weir (piping). Dam breach will cause very big flood so it can cause casualties and damage to property. Using the HEC-RAS 5.0.3 …

Dinamika Erosi Tanah Dan Krisis Ekonomi-Era Reformasi Di Daerah Aliran Sungai Serayu Hulu, Andry Rustanto Feb 2019

Dinamika Erosi Tanah Dan Krisis Ekonomi-Era Reformasi Di Daerah Aliran Sungai Serayu Hulu, Andry Rustanto

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

A large-scale horticulture crops practices in addition to land use / land cover changes in the upper Serayu Hulu catchment has been reported as the most responsible factor of the sedimentation acceleration in the downstream hydropower plant reservoir. This acceleration may become a serious problem for the hydropower plant because it would shorten the reservoir lifespan from the initial estimation. The problem could be further worst if the soil conservation practices application is still limited and land use / land cover changes that tend to increase run-off keep on progress. One of such situation in contrast has been occurred during …

Delaying Onset Of Diabetes In Native American Populatons, Seth Tramm Feb 2019

Delaying Onset Of Diabetes In Native American Populatons, Seth Tramm

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Diabetes is a debilitating disease process caused by the body’s inability to control blood glucose levels. With over 30 million diabetics in the United States, and another 85 million prediabetics, the effects of this disease are wide-spread and far-reaching. Native American/Alaska Native populations have a nearly two-fold increase in incidence of diabetes when compared to non-native populations. Risk factors for diabetes in all populations include modifiable risks such as obesity, diet, physical inactivity as well as non-modifiable factors such as age, family history, and ethnicity. Studies have shown that early identification of symptoms, coupled with proper and intentional treatment can …

Monitoring Landscape Dynamics In Central U.S. Grasslands With Harmonized Landsat-8 And Sentinel-2 Time Series Data, Qiang Zhou, Jennifer Rover, Jesslyn Brown, Bruce Worstell, Danny Howard, Zhuoting Wu, Alisa L. Gallant, Bradley Rundquist, Morgen Walter Victor Burke Feb 2019

Monitoring Landscape Dynamics In Central U.S. Grasslands With Harmonized Landsat-8 And Sentinel-2 Time Series Data, Qiang Zhou, Jennifer Rover, Jesslyn Brown, Bruce Worstell, Danny Howard, Zhuoting Wu, Alisa L. Gallant, Bradley Rundquist, Morgen Walter Victor Burke

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

Remotely monitoring changes in central U.S. grasslands is challenging because these landscapes tend to respond quickly to disturbances and changes in weather. Such dynamic responses influence nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas contributions, habitat availability for wildlife, and other ecosystem processes and services. Traditionally, coarse-resolution satellite data acquired at daily intervals have been used for monitoring. Recently, the harmonized Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 (HLS) data increased the temporal frequency of the data. Here we investigated if the increased data frequency provided adequate observations to characterize highly dynamic grassland processes. We evaluated HLS data available for 2016 to (1) determine if data from Sentinel-2 …

When Surgeons Are Rarer Than Resources - Our Experience With Improving Access To Thoracic Surgery In An Urban Setting: A Special Report, Muhammad Bin Pervez,, Mehnaz Jabeen, Shiraz Hashmi, Saulat Fatimi

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

With progressive globalisation enabled by technology, there is an increased interest in finding viable solutions to the myriad health problems faced by developing countries. In countries like Pakistan, occasionally the challenge is not a dearth of material resources but rather unavailability of expertise. The current paper was planned to share a model that was successfully implemented in the urban setting of Karachi, Pakistan, from 2012 onwards which significantly improved access to thoracic surgery for underprivileged individuals. Our model focussed on a qualified thoracic surgeon reviving a defunct thoracic surgical unit thereby optimising the use of resources already available in the …
