Late Summer Glacial Meltwater Contributions To Bull Lake Creek Stream Flow And Water Quality, Wind River Range, Wyoming, Usa, Jeffrey Vanlooy, Gregory S. Vandeberg

Earth System Science and Policy Faculty Publications

The Wind River Range in Wyoming contains more glacial ice than any other location within the USA’s Rocky Mountain states of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Bull Lake Creek watershed in the southeast portion of the range contains five major (0.6–1.5 km2) glaciers along with numerous smaller glaciers that contribute to the Wind River. Field measurements were made of discharge from the Knife Point and Bull Lake Glaciers to determine the contribution of glacial meltwater to the river system. Water samples were collected and analyzed for stable isotopes, major ions, nutrients, and selected trace elements. Meltwater from the two glaciers …

Role Of Extracellular Vesicles On Immune Regulation In An Animal Model Of Multiple Sclerosis, Cory Willis Feb 2019

Role Of Extracellular Vesicles On Immune Regulation In An Animal Model Of Multiple Sclerosis, Cory Willis

Doctoral Dissertations

Extracellular vesicles play important and crucial roles in orchestrating and modulating cellular responses under both normal and diseased conditions. In my thesis work, I studied extracellular vesicle release from astrocytes during CNS inflammation. Moreover, I studied how extracellular vesicles can modulate and drive the immune response during active CNS disease. Extracellular vesicles encompass a heterogeneous group of cell-derived vesicles that have been found to be important in initiating and directing pathological responses.

In my thesis work, I focused on the characterization and quantification of extracellular vesicles from astrocytes under normal and inflammatory conditions. As described in chapter three of my …

Nutrient Acquisition Strategies Augment Growth In Tropical N2‐Fixing Trees In Nutrient‐Poor Soil And Under Elevated Co2, Megan K. Nasto, Klaus Winter, Benjamin L. Turner, Cory C. Cleveland Feb 2019

Nutrient Acquisition Strategies Augment Growth In Tropical N2‐Fixing Trees In Nutrient‐Poor Soil And Under Elevated Co2, Megan K. Nasto, Klaus Winter, Benjamin L. Turner, Cory C. Cleveland

Ecology Center Publications

Tropical forests play a dominant role in the global carbon (C) cycle, and models predict increases in tropical net primary productivity (NPP) and C storage in response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. The extent to which increasing CO2 will enhance NPP depends in part on the availability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to support growth. Some tropical trees can potentially overcome nutrient limitation by acquiring N via symbiotic dinitrogen (N2) fixation, which may provide a benefit in acquiring P via investment in N‐rich phosphatase enzymes or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. We conducted …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Advancement in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has led to an immense change in the format of resources and the structure of services of libraries worldwide. Academic libraries nowadays are seen to be collecting not only print resources but also non-print resources especially, electronic journals. In reality, electronic journals have turn out to be one of the most used technological developments in recent times. This study focused on determining the extent of awareness, access and use of electronic journals by the students of KsTU. The survey method was used with questionnaire as the major data collection instrument. A population of …

Biology Faculty Publications

High rates of land conversion and land use change have vastly increased the proportion of secondary forest in the lowland tropics relative to mature forest. As secondary forests recover following abandonment, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) must be present in sufficient quantities to sustain high rates of net primary production and to replenish the nutrients lost during land use prior to secondary forest establishment. Biogeochemical theory and results from individual studies suggest that N can recuperate during secondary forest recovery, especially relative to P. Here, we synthesized 23 metrics of N and P in soil and plants from 45 secondary …

Spatiotemporal Changes In Extreme Precipitation And Its Dependence On Topography Over The Poyang Lake Basin, China, Xianghu Li, Qi Hu

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Spatiotemporal changes in extreme precipitation at local scales in the context of climate warming are overwhelmingly important for prevention and mitigation of water-related disasters and also provide critical information for effective water resources management. In this study, the variability and trends of extreme precipitation in both time and space in the Poyang Lake basin over the period of 1960–2012 are analyzed. Also, changes in precipitation extremes with topography are investigated, and possible causes are briefly discussed. ,e results show that extreme precipitation over the Poyang Lake basin is intensified during the last 50 years, especially the increasing trends are more …

Invasion Genetics Of The Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus): Recent Anthropogenic Introduction In Iberia, Teofilo Morim, Grant R. Bigg, Pedro M. Madeira, Jorge Palma, David D. Duvernell, Enric Gisbert, Regina L. Cunha, Rita Castilho

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human activities such as trade and transport have increased considerably in the last decades, greatly facilitating the introduction and spread of non-native species at a global level. In the Iberian Peninsula, Fundulus heteroclitus, a small euryhaline coastal fish with short dispersal, was found for the first time in the mid-1970s. Since then, F. heteroclitus has undergone range expansions, colonizing the southern region of Portugal, southwestern coast of Spain and the Ebro Delta in the Mediterranean Sea. Cytochrome b sequences were used to elucidate the species invasion pathway in Iberia. Three Iberian locations (Faro, Cádiz and Ebro Delta) and 13 …

Khan, Joanna C. Ellison, Simon E. Engelhart, Benjamin P. Horton, Daria Nikitina, Struan R. Smith, Lisa J. Rodrigues, Ryan P. Moyer

Geosciences Faculty Publications

On low-lying, tropical and sub-tropical coastlines freshwater marshes may be replaced by salt‑tolerant mangroves in response to relative sea-level rise. Pollen analysis of radiocarbon‑dated sediment cores showed that such a change occurred in Hungry Bay, Bermuda during the late Holocene. This well-established paleoenvironmental trajectory provides an opportunity to explore if geochemical proxies (bulk-sediment δ13C and Rock-Eval pyrolysis) can reconstruct known environmental changes and relative sea level. We characterized surface sediment from depositional environments in Bermuda (freshwater wetlands, saline mangroves, and wrack composed of Sargassum natans macroalgae) using geochemical measurements and demonstrate that a multi-proxy approach can objectively distinguish …

A Coalescent Sampler Successfully Detects Biologically Meaningful Population Structure Overlooked By F‐Statistics, Eric D. Crandall, Robert J. Toonen, Tobo Laboratory, Kimberly A. Selkoe Feb 2019

A Coalescent Sampler Successfully Detects Biologically Meaningful Population Structure Overlooked By F‐Statistics, Eric D. Crandall, Robert J. Toonen, Tobo Laboratory, Kimberly A. Selkoe

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessing the geographic structure of populations has relied heavily on Sewell Wright's F‐statistics and their numerous analogues for many decades. However, it is well appreciated that, due to their nonlinear relationship with gene flow, F statistics frequently fail to reject the null model of panmixia in species with relatively high levels of gene flow and large population sizes. Coalescent genealogy samplers instead allow a model‐selection approach to the characterization of population structure, thereby providing the opportunity for stronger inference. Here, we validate the use of coalescent samplers in a high gene flow context using simulations of a stepping‐stone model. …

A Politics Of Peripheries: Deleuze And Guattari As Dependency Theorists, Samuel Weeks Feb 2019

A Politics Of Peripheries: Deleuze And Guattari As Dependency Theorists, Samuel Weeks

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

Given that Deleuze and Guattari came to prominence after May 1968, many readers attempt to determine the political significance of their work. The difficulty that some encounter finding its political implications contrasts with Deleuze and Guattari's commitment to radical causes. In response, Patton and Thoburn elaborate on the Marxist elements in the pair's oeuvre, a line of analysis I continue. Focusing on A Thousand Plateaus, I discuss their references to the theorisation of the ‘dependency theorists’, a group of Marxist-inspired scholars who became influential during the 1960s. Does their engagement with dependency theory provide the basis for a political …

Hillslope Hydrology In Global Change Research And Earth System Modeling, A. Flores, J. Mcnamara Feb 2019

Hillslope Hydrology In Global Change Research And Earth System Modeling, A. Flores, J. Mcnamara

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Earth System Models (ESMs) are essential tools for understanding and predicting global change, but they cannot explicitly resolve hillslope‐scale terrain structures that fundamentally organize water, energy, and biogeochemical stores and fluxes at subgrid scales. Here we bring together hydrologists, Critical Zone scientists, and ESM developers, to explore how hillslope structures may modulate ESM grid‐level water, energy, and biogeochemical fluxes. In contrast to the one‐dimensional (1‐D), 2‐ to 3‐m deep, and free‐draining soil hydrology in most ESM land models, we hypothesize that 3‐D, lateral ridge‐to‐valley flow through shallow and deep paths and insolation contrasts between sunny and shady slopes are the …

The State Of The Death Penalty, Ankur Desai, Brandon L. Garrett Feb 2019

The State Of The Death Penalty, Ankur Desai, Brandon L. Garrett

Notre Dame Law Review

The death penalty is in decline in America and most death penalty states do not regularly impose death sentences. In 2016 and 2017, states reached modern lows in imposed death sentences, with just thirty-one defendants sentenced to death in 2016 and thirty-nine in 2017, as compared with over three hundred per year in the 1990s. In 2016, only thirteen states imposed death sentences, and in 2017, fourteen did so, although thirty-one states retain the death penalty. What explains this remarkable and quite unexpected trend? In this Article, we present new analysis of state-level legislative changes that might have been expected …

Clown Eggs, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski Feb 2019

Clown Eggs, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski

Notre Dame Law Review

Since 1946, many clowns have recorded their makeup by having it painted on eggs that are kept in a central registry in Wookey Hole, England. This tradition, which continues today, has been referred to alternately as a form of informal copyright registration and a means of protecting clowns’ property in their personae. This Article explores the Clown Egg Register and its surrounding practices from the perspective of law and social norms. In so doing, it makes several contributions. First, it contributes another chapter to the growing literature on the norms-based governance of intellectual property, showing how clowns—like comedians, roller derby …
