Improving Cockpit Awareness Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Near Airports A Method To Display Active Laanc/Utm Airspace To Manned Aircraft Pilots, Aviators Code Initiative

Improving Cockpit Awareness of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Near Airports

There is an emerging aviation safety concern regarding risks to manned flight from the increasing population of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS).2 This paper describes a method to support pilots in manned aircraft by providing them with essential safety information: the potential location of nearby sUAS within certain active3 Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM)-enabled airspace.4 Such airspace is designated within UAS Facility Map (UASFM) segments5 reflecting Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC)6- enabled airspace. UASFM segments specify maximum altitudes authorized for certain sUAS operations without further coordination with the controlling facility. Enhanced awareness of nearby UAS could be crucial to …

Cooper V. Commissioner: Give The Inventor A (Learned) Hand, Rebecca R. Dulik Mar 2019

Cooper V. Commissioner: Give The Inventor A (Learned) Hand, Rebecca R. Dulik

Maine Law Review

Among the Internal Revenue Code’s many rules are some taxpayer-friendly provisions that grant tax benefits. Section 1235 is one such provision, providing to an inventor preferential tax treatment for income from the sale or exchange of a patent. In Cooper v. Commissioner, although the taxpayer inventor satisfied § 1235’s requirements, the Ninth Circuit affirmed the Tax Court’s decision to deny the taxpayer § 1235’s benefits. This Note compares Cooper to other § 1235 cases and argues that Cooper was decided wrongly because of the application of the substance over form doctrine. The substance over form doctrine is overapplied in general …

Conceptualizing Transformative Agency In Education For Peace, Human Rights, And Social Justice, Monisha Bajaj Mar 2019

Conceptualizing Transformative Agency In Education For Peace, Human Rights, And Social Justice, Monisha Bajaj

International Journal of Human Rights Education

The concept of “agency” lies at the core of many liberatory forms of education that draw from Paulo Freire’s theories of education raising learners’ critical consciousness and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and networks to act for positive social change (Freire, 1970). The term agency is utilized widely across disciplines to refer to a variety of behaviors and actions. This article explores the concept of transformative agency, which lies at the center of educational projects, namely: peace education, human rights education, critical ethnic studies, and social justice education. These educational interventions have often been fought for and won through …

Reflector Dip Trends In Seismic Sh-Wave Imaging Of A Modern Lower Mississippi River Point Bar, Adam Gostic Mar 2019

Reflector Dip Trends In Seismic Sh-Wave Imaging Of A Modern Lower Mississippi River Point Bar, Adam Gostic

LSU Master's Theses

Various studies of ancient point bars have noted that a relationship can be observed between the dip angle and grain size of point bar lateral accretion deposits, with the most mud-rich deposits tending to exhibit the greatest dip. No analysis and only cursory explanations for this relationship have been provided. Additionally, buried mid-channel bars are absent from typical models of point bar architecture.

We successfully image the architecture of late-stage point bar deposits with a near surface 2D seismic SH-wave reflection survey and generate an SH-wave velocity model of the subsurface in the study area in order to interpret the …

Comparative Perspectives Of Adult Content Filtering: Legal Challenges And Implications, Adam Szafranski, Piotr Szwedo And Malgorzata Klein Mar 2019

Comparative Perspectives Of Adult Content Filtering: Legal Challenges And Implications, Adam Szafranski, Piotr Szwedo And Malgorzata Klein

Catholic University Law Review

The internet is virtually ubiquitous and is becoming more accessible to young people all over the world. Along with the many benefits it brings, the internet poses serious risks to the human rights of its most vulnerable users, viz. children. The United Kingdom, Poland and the U.S. State of Utah have already started to mitigate this risk through a variety of regulatory mechanisms. A priori, both self-regulation and hard law can satisfy international requirements on freedom of services and freedom of expression, but each requires careful scrutiny. Neither self-regulation nor soft law appear to be sufficient. It would seem, …

Conventional Deterrence And Landpower In Northeastern Europe, Alexander Lanoszka Dr., Michael A. Hunzeker Dr. Mar 2019

Conventional Deterrence And Landpower In Northeastern Europe, Alexander Lanoszka Dr., Michael A. Hunzeker Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) face daunting challenges in the Baltic region. Russia is behaving aggressively. Its military is more capable than it has been at any point since the end of the Cold War. More importantly, Russia is finding creative ways to subvert the status quo and to sow discord without triggering Article 5 of NATO, which declares that an attack against one member is an attack against all.

These problems are formidable, but we have reason to be optimistic. Far from shattering NATO’s cohesion and undermining its resolve, Russian aggression has reinvigorated the …

Using Artificial Neural Networks To Predict Future Dryland Responses To Human And Climate Disturbances, C.E. Buckland, R.M. Bailey, D.S.G. Thomas

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Land degradation and sediment remobilisation in dryland environments is considered to be a significant global environmental problem. Given the potential for currently stabilised dune systems to reactivate under climate change and increased anthropogenic pressures, identifying the role of external disturbances in driving geomorphic response is vitally important. We developed a novel approach, using artificial neural networks (ANNs) applied to time series of historical reactivation-deposition events from the Nebraska Sandhills, to determine the relationship between historic periods of sand deposition in semi-arid grasslands and external climatic conditions, land use pressures and wildfire occurrence. We show that both vegetation growth and sediment …

Park And Neighborhood Attributes Associated With Park Use: An Observational Study Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Keunhyun Park Mar 2019

Park And Neighborhood Attributes Associated With Park Use: An Observational Study Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Keunhyun Park

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications

As the world becomes more urbanized, neighborhood parks are becoming an increasingly important venue where people engage in physical and social activities. Using park-use data collected by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the aim of this study is to account for park use in light of park attributes and neighborhood conditions. The role of the built environment near a park receives particular attention as it is understudied in the literature. A regression model shows that neighborhood park utilization is positively associated with park attributes (i.e., larger area, a playground, a creek/pond, quality maintenance, and organized activities) and neighborhood attributes (i.e., fewer …

Islam And Buddhism: The Arabian Prequel?, Anna Akasoy Mar 2019

Islam And Buddhism: The Arabian Prequel?, Anna Akasoy

Publications and Research

Conventionally, the first Muslim-Buddhist encounters are thought to have taken place in the context of the Arab-Muslim expansions into eastern Iran in the mid-seventh century, the conquest of Sind in 711 and the rise of the Islamic empire. However, several theories promoted in academic and popular circles claim that Buddhists or other Indians were present in western Arabia at the eve of Islam and thus shaped the religious environment in which Muhammad’s movement emerged. This article offers a critical survey of the most prominent arguments adduced to support this view and discusses the underlying attitudes to the Islamic tradition, understood …

The Future Of The Death Penalty In Nebraska: Utilizing Bruce Bueno De Mesquita's Predictioneer's Game To Create A Forecast Model Of Capital Punishment, Katie Andersen

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis investigates the future of the death penalty in Nebraska with the goal of producing a forecast model of the issue utilizing Bruce Bueno De Mesquita’s Predicationeer’s Game software. Local and national politics are included to give a comprehensive idea of why Nebraska is in the hot seat in terms of capital punishment. Understanding the politics of the issue is vital to realizing the challenges of changing Nebraska’s policy on capital punishment and further explains the conflicted history between key players in the state.

The Predictioneer software requires input data of key players’ positions on the issue, influence, salience, …

Infrastructures Of Taste: Rethinking Local Food Histories In Lithuania, Renata Blumberg, Diana Mincyte Mar 2019

Infrastructures Of Taste: Rethinking Local Food Histories In Lithuania, Renata Blumberg, Diana Mincyte

Publications and Research

Lithuania hosts a diversity of places that offer consumers a taste of local food, which appear to mirror the recent popularity of local and alternative food initiatives globally. In this paper we show that the proliferation of local foods in the region is not a novel phenomenon, nor is it solely a manifestation of taste preferences or identities associated with food. Drawing on the growing scholarly work on the role of infrastructures in mediating social, economic and political relations, we conceptualize the taste for local food as embedded in broader networks and reproduced through material facilities. To advance this argument, …

Archivists And Time: Conceptions Of Time And Long-Term Information Preservation Among Archivists, Reine Rydén Mar 2019

Archivists And Time: Conceptions Of Time And Long-Term Information Preservation Among Archivists, Reine Rydén

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The issue of preserving information about nuclear waste for an extremely long period of time raises questions about ways to transmit knowledge to future generations. There is an ongoing discussion about the design of a message and the sustainability of different storage media. Information preservation in the really long term is, however, only partly a matter of technology; it is just as much about thought patterns. Since the work of archivists plays a key role, it is important to find out how archivists think about time and whether they have more developed conceptions of time and the future than other …

Wood Mountain Walk: Afterthoughts On A Pilgrimage For Andrew Suknaski, Ken Wilson Mar 2019

Wood Mountain Walk: Afterthoughts On A Pilgrimage For Andrew Suknaski, Ken Wilson

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Ken Wilson’s ‘Wood Mountain Walk: Afterthoughts on a Pilgrimage for Andrew Suknaski’ reflects on a 250-kilometre walking pilgrimage made in honour of the late Canadian poet Andrew Suknaski. Wilson’s autoethnographic essay considers the possibilities and challenges of walking as a way to engage with land and community; Suknaski’s book Wood Mountain Poems and the issue of cultural appropriation; what it is like to walk in a sparsely populated and arid agricultural province where trespassing laws confine walkers to roads; and walking as both pilgrimage and artistic practice.

Walking On Walls: Shifting Perspectives In A Post-Modern World, Philip Szporer Mar 2019

Walking On Walls: Shifting Perspectives In A Post-Modern World, Philip Szporer

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In ‘Walking on Walls,’ Philip Szporer brings dance and pilgrimage into fascinating relationship. He resituates American choreographer and dancer Trisha Brown’s radical approach to the human body in terms of core concepts that have shaped pilgrimage theory. Szporer proposes that pilgrimage, place, and mobility theories provide useful lenses for an innovative re-examination of Brown’s pioneering dance pieces. Like pilgrimage, her ideas and contributions were enacted outside - and often in contradistinction to - the control of institutional authority.

Walking To Be Some Body: Desire And Diaspora On The St. Olaf Way, Matthew R. Anderson Mar 2019

Walking To Be Some Body: Desire And Diaspora On The St. Olaf Way, Matthew R. Anderson

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In ‘Walking to Be Some Body’ Matthew R. Anderson uses the example of North American Scandinavian-background pilgrims walking Norway’s St. Olaf Way to parse the yearning of contemporary diaspora pilgrims who walk repristinated routes along ancient paths toward real or imagined homelands. These travellers literally incarnate contemporary tensions between the religious and the non-religious, the journey and the destination, and between the rootlessness of modern global tourism and the rootedness longed for in community and patrimony.
