Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Waterfowl Nesting Ecology In The Bakken Formation Of North Dakota, Cassandra G. Skaggs Mar 2019

Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Waterfowl Nesting Ecology In The Bakken Formation Of North Dakota, Cassandra G. Skaggs

LSU Master's Theses

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is one of the most important areas on the continent for grassland-nesting birds. Thirty percent of the PPR overlaps the Bakken shale formation where rapidly accelerating oil and gas development has the potential to impact millions of breeding waterfowl. While oil and gas development has negatively affected other ground-nesting birds such as sagebrush passerines and Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in Wyoming, the potential impact on breeding waterfowl in the PPR is unknown. In addition, the PPR landscape is already heavily fragmented by agriculture, and increasing land conversion and disturbance from petroleum extraction may further …

#Blackqueerlivesmatter: Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Black Gay Male Leaders In Los Angeles, Christopher Jackson Mar 2019

#Blackqueerlivesmatter: Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Black Gay Male Leaders In Los Angeles, Christopher Jackson

Education (PhD) Dissertations

The Black community and the gay community have historically experienced marginalization from society, public and private institutions, federal government agencies, and law enforcement. Black gay male leadership is not a conversation within leadership academia. This phenomenological study focuses on understanding the lived experiences and leadership among Black gay men who are leaders in Los Angeles County. This study found that the lived experiences such as oppression, mentorship, community involvement, and advocacy have influenced their leadership development and leadership identity. This study identifies how Black gay men define leadership, based off their lived experiences. It also identifies themes of leadership development …

Wind And Wave-Driven Circulation In A Fetch-Limited Coastal Basin: Western Long Island Sound, Youngmi Shin Mar 2019

Wind And Wave-Driven Circulation In A Fetch-Limited Coastal Basin: Western Long Island Sound, Youngmi Shin

Doctoral Dissertations

A study of 8 years of observations from a buoy in western Long Island Sound shows that the wave field has an asymmetric response to wind direction. Waves are bigger when the wind blows from the east. Comparison to empirical models shows that the behavior is consistent with fetch limited wave growth when bottom dissipation is included.

Using 3 years of current observations at, and near, the surface, I show that the near surface shear also has an asymmetric response to wind. The shear is greater when the wind blows from the west. I then compare estimates of the near …

Air Power And Warfare: A Century Of Theory And History, Tami Davis Biddle Dr. Mar 2019

Air Power And Warfare: A Century Of Theory And History, Tami Davis Biddle Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In this monograph, Tami Davis Biddle analyzes the historical record of air power over the past 100 years. Her monograph, designed for the student of strategy, is intended to provide both a concise introduction to the topic and a framework for thinking intelligently about air power, particularly aerial bombing. Her primary aim is to discern the distinction between what has been expected of air power by theorists and military institutions, and what it has produced in the crucible of war. Aerial bombing, Biddle argues, is a coercive activity in which an attacker seeks to structure the enemy’s incentives—using threats and …

Using Residential Location To Assess The Environmental Value-Action Gap Of Students At James Madison University, Emma Martin Mar 2019

Using Residential Location To Assess The Environmental Value-Action Gap Of Students At James Madison University, Emma Martin

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

This study focuses on the environmental value-action gap of students at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia. An environmental value-action gap occurs when a person has pro-environmental beliefs but does not have congruent actions. Over 1,000 JMU students completed a survey of their residence location, environmental values, and environmental actions. Students’ preservation and utilization values were assessed using a 2-Dimensional Model of Ecological Values (2-MEV), and their frequency of environmental actions was assessed through a series of Likert-scaled statements. It was hypothesized that any value-action gap would be wider in students who resided in off-campus housing compared to students …

Flow Alteration-Ecology Relationships In Ozark Highland Streams: Consequences For Fish, Crayfish And Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Dustin Thomas Lynch, Douglas R. Leasure, Daniel D. Magoulick Mar 2019

Flow Alteration-Ecology Relationships In Ozark Highland Streams: Consequences For Fish, Crayfish And Macroinvertebrate Assemblages, Dustin Thomas Lynch, Douglas R. Leasure, Daniel D. Magoulick

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We examined flowalteration-ecology relationships in benthic macroinvertebrate, fish, and crayfish assemblages in Ozark Highland streams, USA, over two years with contrasting environmental conditions, a drought year (2012) and a flood year (2013). We hypothesized that: 1) there would be temporal variation in flow alteration-ecology relationships between the two years, 2) flow alteration-ecology relationshipswould be stronger during the drought year vs the flood year, and 3) fish assemblages would show the strongest relationships with flow alteration. We used a quantitative richest-targeted habitat (RTH) method and a qualitative multihabitat (QMH) method to collect macroinvertebrates at 16 USGS gaged sites during both years. …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Measured field data were used to compare two allocation methods on life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from corn (Zea mays L.) stover production in the Midwest U.S. We used publicly-available crop yield, nitrogen fertilizer, and direct soil nitrous oxide emissions data from the USDA-ARS Resilient Economic Agricultural Practices research program. Field data were aggregated from 9 locations across 26 site-years for 3 stover harvest rates (no removal; moderate removal e 3.1Mg ha-1; high removal e 7.2Mg ha-1) and 2 tillage practices (conventional; reduced/no-till). Net carbon uptake by crops was computed from measured plant carbon content. Monte Carlo simulations sampled input …

Morphometric Characteristics Of Alluvial Fans In Southern Turkey: Implications For Fault Activity In The Anatolia, Arabia, Africa Triple Junction Region., A Karatas, S Boulton

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although, there are numerous studies investigating the boundary between the Anatolian, African and Arabian plates, there are still no definitive results on this topic. Continuing intense tectonic deformation in the area has caused tectonic lines composed of various types of faults to interact and it is necessary to accurately identify the plate borders in the convergence area which is globally and regionally important. Therefore, the impact of tectonic deformation on the current alluvial fans was measured through morphometric analysis methods such as concavity index, best fitted ellipse and sinuosity index to define the relationship between fault lines by presenting their …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Uptake In An Urban Stream Ecosystem, Nicolette A. Sheffield Mar 2019

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Uptake In An Urban Stream Ecosystem, Nicolette A. Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

Urban stream ecosystems are faced with high input levels of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from anthropogenic activities. N and P are important to plant growth and stream health; however, high levels can lead to algal blooms and eutrophication, a harmful effect to both aquatic life and water quality. Common urban sources of N and P include fertilizer, atmospheric deposition, stormwater outfall, and leaf-litter decomposition. Common urban stream features such as a flashier hydrograph, altered channel stability and morphology, increase in nutrient output (such as N and P), and heat retention, have been shown to result in an overall decrease …

Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm Mar 2019

Planning For Protest: The Spatial Dimensions Of Civil Resistance Movements In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Nora Lamm

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This research project seeks to better understand how protests of varying sizes take place in public spaces, focusing on the city of Rio de Janeiro. The relationship between cities and protests has increasingly gained importance as urban areas throughout the world become epicenters for demanding greater political rights and expanded notions of citizenship (Harvey, 2003) (Vicino, 2017). Understanding the dynamics of protest in Rio de Janeiro is particularly important as the city struggles to overcome a financial crisis following nearly a decade of hosting international mega-events including the 2016 Olympics. Unstable funding has led to a public security crisis as …

"The Most Difficult Vote": Post-Roe Abortion Politics In Oregon, 1973-2001, Tanya Trangia Monthey Mar 2019

"The Most Difficult Vote": Post-Roe Abortion Politics In Oregon, 1973-2001, Tanya Trangia Monthey

Dissertations and Theses

The abortion debate in the United States has come to split the contemporary electorate among party lines. Since the late 1970s, the Republican Party has taken a stand against abortion and has worked through various routes of legislation to pass restrictions on access to the procedure. Oregon however, provides a different interpretation of this partisan debate. Though Oregon has seen both Republican and Democratic leadership in all houses of state government and pro-life conservative groups have lobbied to restrict the procedure, no abortion restriction has been passed in the state since the United States Supreme Court invalidated many state abortion …

Extra-Curricular Engagements: A Case For Provocative Displays, Kathy Edwards Mar 2019

Extra-Curricular Engagements: A Case For Provocative Displays, Kathy Edwards

Presentations

As the solo librarian at Clemson University’s Gunnin Architecture Library (gate count last year: 71,000), I have the luxury of programming the most high-profile lighted display wall in an active, multi-disciplinary academic building. Over the past year, I have transformed this opportunity into a ‘bully pulpit,’ serving up the big, wide world beyond South Carolina to a mostly homegrown student body. Instead of curriculum-based exhibits, I engage faculty, colleagues, friends, and students in collaborating to stage extra-curricular ‘provocations’: interdisciplinary displays that use library materials to showcase social and political currents, issues, and global cultures.

Example exhibit titles:

Art for political …

Physical-World Knowledge And Public Views On Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Linda M. Fogg Mar 2019

Physical-World Knowledge And Public Views On Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Linda M. Fogg

Faculty Publications

Climate change is a formidable topic, challenging the research efforts of countless scientists across many different fields. Surveys find surprisingly high levels of confidence among nonscientists, however, regarding their own understanding of climate change. More than threefourths of the respondents on recent U.S. surveys claimed to understand either a moderate amount or a great deal about climate change. Follow-up questions testing actual knowledge suggest that self-assessments are high relative to physical-world knowledge. For some people, self-assessments reflect confidence in their political views rather than geographical or science knowledge. This paper replicates and extends previous research using new data: an October …

Geoannotator: A Collaborative Semi-Automatic Platform For Constructing Geo-Annotated Text Corpora, Morteza Karimzadeh, Alan M. Maceachren Mar 2019

Geoannotator: A Collaborative Semi-Automatic Platform For Constructing Geo-Annotated Text Corpora, Morteza Karimzadeh, Alan M. Maceachren

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Ground-truth datasets are essential for the training and evaluation of any automated algorithm. As such, gold-standard annotated corpora underlie most advances in natural language processing (NLP). However, only a few relatively small (geo-)annotated datasets are available for geoparsing, i.e., the automatic recognition and geolocation of place references in unstructured text. The creation of geoparsing corpora that include both the recognition of place names in text and matching of those names to toponyms in a geographic gazetteer (a process we call geo-annotation), is a laborious, time-consuming and expensive task. The field lacks efficient geo-annotation tools to support corpus building and lacks …
