Canvas has been revising all the gradebook features during the past couple years. Since the current Canvas gradebook will be deprecated in June or July, SWOSU will be changing to the New Gradebook on May 7. All grades will transfer over appropriately. Go to https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13745 to view the guide for the New Gradebook. The ability for faculty to replace a student’s final grade calculated through Canvas activities with a manually entered grade is in the near future. This change allows instructors to adjust the final grade for a student if needed in the course, such as before sending course grades …

Work And Madness: Overworked Men And Fears Of Degeneration, 1860s-1910s, Amy Milne-Smith

History Faculty Publications

The very things that provided a Victorian man’s status, his self worth, and his identity could also lead him to lose his mind. This paradox is at the heart of this essay. Men breaking down under the pressure of hard work was disruptive in a society that was dependent on that overwork. This idea preoccupied Victorians, who worried that the pace of modern life could lead to broken nerves, low spirits, nervous collapse, and even suicide. Both doctors and sufferers believed that overtaxing one’s brain could lead to a complete mental breakdown requiring institutionalization. As asylums filled up with incurable …

Motorcycle Touring In Montana: A Market Analysis, Norma P. Nickerson, Kara Grau, Jeremy L. Sage, Carter Bermingham Apr 2019

Motorcycle Touring In Montana: A Market Analysis, Norma P. Nickerson, Kara Grau, Jeremy L. Sage, Carter Bermingham

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Motorcycle tourism is a relatively understudied market in the U.S. but has the potential to assist rural communities in their efforts to develop a tourism economy. This report highlights the characteristics of motorcyclists and their travel needs as well as the potential for marketing to this niche of travelers.

Highlights:

• Motorcyclists tend to ride on scenic roads, eat and drink local cuisine, and stay away from the busy highways leading to the idea that ‘off the beaten’ path communities could benefit from motorcycle tourism.

• Nonresident motorcyclists’ average age was 60, while resident motorcyclists’ average age was much younger …

Detecting Change: Observations Of Temperature And Precipitation Across Virginia’S Climate Divisions, Jeremy S. Hoffman, Michael J. Allen, Christopher F. Labosier Apr 2019

Detecting Change: Observations Of Temperature And Precipitation Across Virginia’S Climate Divisions, Jeremy S. Hoffman, Michael J. Allen, Christopher F. Labosier

Virginia Journal of Science

Modern global climate change is primarily attributable to human activities and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Climate change impacts span a range of sectors, including agriculture, forestry, public health, and water resource management. The Commonwealth of Virginia has already and will continue to deal with many of these impacts, yet lacks concentrated effort to detect, document, and adapt to local climate changes. This study documents observed changes in temperature and precipitation across Virginia’s six climate divisions. Mean seasonal anomalies of minimum temperature, maximum temperature, and precipitation from 1986 to 2016 are examined relative to a long-term 1895-2000 …

Primitive Palms: A Density Study On The Impacts Of Harvesting Natural Materials For Construction Purposes On Sumak Allpa Of The Amazon Rainforest, Zachary Bull

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In an effort to better understand how rural construction techniques affect a surrounding environment, this study combines a density test of the natural building materials used in the construction of a school on Sumak Allpa island of the Orellana Province in the Amazon basin of Ecuador. The focus of the study measures the density of the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia and the Panama hat plant Carludovica palmata on the island while noting a comprehensive compilation of the techniques and materials used in the building process. Using a mix of plots and transects, a comparison of harvested material to remaining material …

An Ecological Partition Of The Atlantic Ocean And Its Adjacent Seas, G Beaugrand, M Edwards, P Hélaouët Apr 2019

An Ecological Partition Of The Atlantic Ocean And Its Adjacent Seas, G Beaugrand, M Edwards, P Hélaouët

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

In the past, partitions of the global ocean have been commonly carried out using relatively few environmental or biological variables. Although such partitions are undoubtedly useful on a global scale, we show that, at a basin scale, the use of a large number of biological variables greatly improves the accuracy of a partition. We first determined pelagic habitats using a set of selected environmental variables such as temperature, bathymetry, light at the seabed, sea ice concentration, current velocity and salinity. We then partitioned the North Atlantic Ocean and its adjacent seas at spatial resolutions of 2° latitude × 2° longitude …

Effects Of Increased Precipitation On The Life History Of Spring- And Autumn-Germinated Plants Of The Cold Desert Annual Erodium Oxyrhynchum (Geraniaceae), Yanfeng Chen, Xiang Shi, Lingwei Zhang, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin, Huiliang Liu, Daoyuan Zhang Apr 2019

Baskin, Huiliang Liu, Daoyuan Zhang

Biology Faculty Publications

Future increased precipitation in cold desert ecosystems may impact annual/ephemeral plant species that germinate in both spring and autumn. Our primary aim was to compare the life history characteristics of plants from spring-germinating (SG) and autumn-germinating (AG) seeds of Erodium oxyrhynchum. Plants in field plots with simulated increases in precipitation of 0, 30 and 50 % in spring and summer were monitored to determine seedling survival, phenology, plant size, seed production and biomass accumulation and allocation. Germination characteristics were determined in the laboratory for seeds produced by plants in all increased precipitation treatments. Increased precipitation in spring significantly improved survival …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Learning Communities, Violet E. Eyanagho Apr 2019

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Learning Communities, Violet E. Eyanagho

All Theses And Dissertations

The professional learning community (PLC) is an essential organizational structure in education, intended to cultivate a collaborative culture, improve professional practices, increase student achievement, reform failing schools, and sustain high achieving schools. Because there is little in the literature which examines teachers’ perceptions of the PLC concept and the work accomplished in the PLC process, the problem studied here was teachers’ perceptions of their work in PLCs at a middle school in Texas. The two research questions addressed the roles of the PLC teams and their individual members in improving student learning. A grounded theory approach was used in the …

The 2018 Midterms In The Mountain West, Molly Reynolds Apr 2019

The 2018 Midterms In The Mountain West, Molly Reynolds

Brookings Mountain West Publications

The 116th Congress has begun with a bang, with a protracted government shutdown and promises of aggressive oversight from the new Democratic House majority. To understand how we got to this point—and where we might be going in 2020—a look back at the 2018 elections is valuable. As a region, the Mountain West—Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah—provides useful insights into broader national political dynamics across all levels of government, from Congress to state legislatures.

A Crossroads, Not An Island: A Response To Hanoch Dagan, Zoë Hitzig, E. Glen Weyl Apr 2019

A Crossroads, Not An Island: A Response To Hanoch Dagan, Zoë Hitzig, E. Glen Weyl

Michigan Law Review Online

Hanoch Dagan critiques Radical Markets for insufficient attention to the value of autonomy. While most of his concrete disagreements result from miscommunications, he appears sympathetic to a theory of autonomy that is more widespread, and deserves response. Human agency is fundamentally social, and individuality is primarily constituted by the unique set of social connections and identities one adopts. In this sense, flourishing individuals are crossroads of different communities, not self-sufficient islands. Beyond any welfarist benefits, a fundamental value of Radical Markets is that they aim to instantiate the social nature of identity and empower agency through diverse community.

Differentiation Of Surface Water And Groundwater In A Karst System Using Anthropogenic Signatures, Joe Honings Apr 2019

Differentiation Of Surface Water And Groundwater In A Karst System Using Anthropogenic Signatures, Joe Honings

Faculty Publications

Surface water-groundwater interaction within a karstic system enhances contaminant transport, making karst aquifers susceptible to anthropogenic practices. Contaminated waters related to agricultural and animal husbandry in northwestern Illinois (USA) prompted this investigation. Six streams and five springs were sampled for 16 parameters to assess anthropogenic influences. Statistical analyses revealed differences in 13 of 16 parameters between the stream and spring waters. Rock-water interaction was identified as the dominant mechanism defining the chemistry for both waters, which were classified as Ca-Mg HCO3. Elevated nitrate as nitrogen (NO3-N), chloride (Cl-), sodium, and potassium concentrations indicate that human activities have influenced the quality …

Energy Re-Investment, Hari M. Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel, Brett H. Mcdonnell, Anita Foerster Apr 2019

Energy Re-Investment, Hari M. Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel, Brett H. Mcdonnell, Anita Foerster

Indiana Law Journal

Despite worsening climate change threats, investment in energy—in the United States and globally—is dominated by fossil fuels. This Article provides a novel analysis of two pathways in corporate and securities law that together have the potential to shift patterns of energy investment.

The first pathway targets current investments and corporate decision-making. It includes efforts to influence investors to divest from owning shares in fossil fuel companies and to influence companies to address climate change risks in their internal decision-making processes. This pathway has received increasing attention, especially in light of the Paris Agreement and the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw …

Residential Segregation Patterns In Indian Metros, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Deepak Malghan Apr 2019

Residential Segregation Patterns In Indian Metros, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Deepak Malghan

Working Papers

We present the first ever neighbourhood-scale portrait of caste-based residential segregation in Indian cities. Using 2011 enumeration block (EB) level census data for five major cities in India – Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai – we show how patterns of caste-based urban residential segregation operate in contemporary India. We also present the first visual snapshot of caste-based residential segregation in an Indian city using georeferenced EB level data for Bengaluru.

Firms Of A Feather Merge Together: Cultural Proximity And M&A Outcomes, Manaswini Bhalla, Vsk Teja Konduri, Michelle Zemel, Manisha Goel Apr 2019

Firms Of A Feather Merge Together: Cultural Proximity And M&A Outcomes, Manaswini Bhalla, Vsk Teja Konduri, Michelle Zemel, Manisha Goel

Working Papers

Using data from India, we show that shared caste identities between two firms’ directors increases the likelihood that they enter a merger and acquisition (M&A) deal. This may indicate directors’ reliance on caste as an informal information channel. But it may also be driven by their agency or overestimation of synergies, leading to sub-optimal deals. Indeed, we find that caste-proximate M&A deals create less value than caste-distant deals for both acquirer and target. The negotiation process and long run performance also do not improve. Evidence strongly supports presence of agency costs but not information gains or overestimation of synergies

Go Global Or Stay Local? Understanding How Fiscal Incentives Reshape Supply Networks, Ricardo Silveira Martins, Janaina Siegler, Armando Souza-Junior, Barbara Flynn, Guilherme Silveira Martins

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This study investigates the way firms reconfigure their supply base and reshape their production network to capture value from Free Trade Zone incentives to capture value from incentives. Six production networks located in Manaus, Brazil are analyzed using the Global Production Network framework and factors related to plant type and supplier relationships. A multiple case study was conducted. Data was collected using in-depth semi-structured interviews administered in loco, and the selected the firms were leaders in three different industries: transportation, mechanical assembly and chemicals. The results indicate that, if effectively applied, incentives can impact production network configuration from an embeddedness …
