How Do Israelis And Palestinians Interpret Their Own Histories As Evidence That They Have Claim Over Israeli Held Territory?, Jacob Kubiak
How Do Israelis And Palestinians Interpret Their Own Histories As Evidence That They Have Claim Over Israeli Held Territory?, Jacob Kubiak
Honors Theses
The Israeli-Palestinian War over Israeli-held territories has been a major controversy for many years. The modern conflict has been raging on since 1948. This conflict has caused the displacement of 1.4 million Palestinians, uprooting them from what they believe to be their ancestral home. Along with this displacement, the conflict has caused infrastructural collapse and the rise of terrorist organizations within Israel and Palestinian territories. Both groups have their own evidence in claiming the Israeli-held territory, including archaeological history and ancient texts to argue that they are the rightful owners of this land. The narratives of land claim belief are …

Techniques described herein augment packet tagging Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) mitigation solutions with a powerful anti-spoofing capability. A Segment Routing over Internet Protocol (IP) version 6 (SRv6) network programming technique is proposed herein wherein authenticated sessions are given an SRv6 header to append to all outbound packets. Traffic with the valid SRv6 header is allowed to pass thru the service provider network whereas all other traffic destined to the victim of the DDOS attack is dropped. The valid SRv6 header address can be rotated from amongst the 18, 446, 744, 073, 709, 551, and 616 possible addresses found in a /64 …
Knowledge Networks: Contested Geographies In The History Of Mary Prince, Leah M. Thomas
Knowledge Networks: Contested Geographies In The History Of Mary Prince, Leah M. Thomas
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
The History of Mary Prince, a West-Indian Slave, Related by Herself (1831) is the first published woman’s slave narrative. In her History, Prince describes horrendous physical violence to which she and other enslaved peoples of African descent are subjected as well as the corresponding psychological and sexual abuse they endure. While Prince “speaks” the sexual abuse to some extent, how she knows what she knows goes unspoken. She expresses her knowledge of reading and writing and, at times, of the law, but she does not explain how she obtains this knowledge or knows what she knows. Her optimism to …

Exploring How Philippine American Nonprofit Leaders Build Trust With Their Staff And Volunteers, Dominic Fernando Laureano
Dissertations
Purpose: Although a considerable amount of literature exists regarding leadership and trust, little research focuses on Philippine American nonprofit organizations and their leadership. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how Philippine American nonprofit leaders build trust with staff and volunteers using the five domains of competency, consistency, concern, candor, and connection.
Methodology: This phenomenological qualitative study collected data via semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and review of artifacts. The study sample was comprised of 10 Philippine American nonprofit leaders from Southern California. Weisman’s Trust Model served at the theoretical framework of the study and guided data collection and …

American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) Of The Paunsaugunt Plateau: Movements And Habitat Use, Rebekah Adriana Castro Dungan
Theses and Dissertations
Concerns over human-bear conflict and questions about the ecology of Paunsaugunt Plateau's population of black bears (Ursus americanus) arose due to their visitation to popular recreation sites. Greater insight about bears and their habitat use provides a foundation for conflict mitigation and effective management decisions. Between 2014 and 2017, seventeen black bears (11 female, 6 male) were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio-collars so that we could track their locations, daily activity patterns, and ambient temperatures. By analyzing bear locations, we calculated annual and seasonal home ranges for 16 bears, including 25 den sites. Home ranges typically consisted of …
Sustainability Assessment Of Wireless Community Grid For Off-Grid Communities: A Case Study For Haiti, Tejan Adhikari
Sustainability Assessment Of Wireless Community Grid For Off-Grid Communities: A Case Study For Haiti, Tejan Adhikari
Theses
Affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy service is fundamental to human, social and economic development. Approximately 1.2 billion people lack access to basic energy services. There exists a huge energy access gap between urban centers and rural areas. Approximately 84% of the people deprived of energy access live in rural areas. Existing rural electrification options including grid extension, mini-grids, and stand-alone solar home systems, have limited penetration in rural regions. Entrepreneurs, with support from governments and international institutions, have experimented with different business mechanisms to facilitate energy delivery. A significant amount of investment is being made for rural electrification but many …

Community Engaged Research Reports
Maine lends itself to many outdoor activities with its varied geography. Many communities around the state have acknowledged this asset and designed trail systems that allow for people to experience the outdoors. In Maine, many trail organizations are nonprofits as it allows them to provide critical services that contribute to economic stability and mobility in surrounding communities without being dependent on local governments (National Council of Nonprofits 2019a). The nonprofit community in Maine has been successful throughout the years in creating a robust and vibrant community of citizens that help protect the environment, educate children, and inform the government (Maine …

Fostering Dialogue And Engagement: The Role Of The Catholic Church In Nigeria, Tony Terwase Famave
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This thesis entitled “Fostering Dialogue and Engagement: The Role of the Catholic Church in Nigeria,” written by Tony Terwase Famave, seeks to address the long-standing misunderstandings between Christians and Muslims that often lead to the wanton destruction of lives, property, and destabilization of the social order, using Vatican II as a model for Nigeria. The ethnic and religious division in the country is further complicated by a Muslim north which is predominantly of the Hausa Fulani tribe and the Christian south which is mostly of the Igbo and Yoruba tribes, with a number of minority tribes counted among the two …

It has been suggested that hillslope topography can produce hydrologic refugia, sites where ecosystem productivity is relatively insensitive to climate variation. However, the ecological impacts and spatial distribution of these sites are poorly resolved across gradients in climate. We quantified the response of ecosystem net primary productivity to changes in the annual climatic water balance for 30 years using pixel‐specific linear regression (30‐m resolution) across the western United States. The standardized slopes of these models represent ecosystem climate sensitivity and provide a means to identify drought‐resistant ecosystems. Productive and resistant ecosystems were most frequent in convergent hillslope positions, especially in …

Unveiling Identities: A Cultural Study Of The Portrayal Of Leading Women In Zhang Yimou Films, Patrick Mcguire
Dissertations
It is imperative to recognize the ongoing collaborations of filmmakers from different countries. Film director Zhang Yimou, cited in this work, has reached out beyond his Chinese borders in recruiting both cast and crew on many of his latest features. But the field of film studies appears to have limited their investigations of such cross-cultural analyses, in particular the subjective analysis of the female lead character in film. Subjective and culturally wired as such, researchers bring forth conscious observations from their socialized unconscious minds.
This textual analysis begins with a comparison of two Chinese films, particularly observing their similar female …

Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Research Collection School of Economics
Does early grading affect educational choices? To answer the question, I exploit the staggeredimplementation of a reform which postponed grade assignment in Swedish compulsoryschool. I identify short- and long-term effects of early grading, for students with differentacademic ability and socioeconomic status (SES). When graded early on, high-ability students(especially if high-SES) perform better, and are more likely to choose academic coursesduring compulsory school. Low-ability students react in the opposite way, in particular iflow-SES. While high school attainment increases for high-ability low-SES students, collegeattainment decreases for low-ability low-SES students. None of these effects carry over tothe labor market. This suggests that early …

Brownfields Area-Wide Plan: Lower North Delaware Industrial District, Philadelphia, Mahbubur Meenar, Lynn Mandarano, Andrew Goodman, Sally Harrison
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
A Brownfields Area-Wide Plan is created for a key portion of Philadelphia’s Lower North Delaware Industrial District. The brownfields challenges in the project are representative of both location-specific factors and issues typical of brownfield redevelopment. One hundred and fifty years of industrial history, from coal to textile or food distribution, cannot help but leave a trace. Locational factors including high vacancy rates, weak market forces, and former industrial uses highlight the classic brownfields challenges of financial barriers, liability issues, and cleanup considerations. The coalescence of these types of difficulties significantly impacts the economic, social, public health, and environmental justice concerns …

While large-scale observations of intensified fracture and rifting can be observed through remote-sensing observations, understanding crevasse initiation may best be achieved with small-scale observations in which crevasses can be directly observed. Here we investigate the kinematic drivers of crevasse initiation in the McMurdo Shear Zone (MSZ), Antarctica. We delineated 420 crevasses from ∼95 km of 400 MHz frequency ground-penetrating radar data and compared these data with kinematic outputs derived from remotely-sensed ice surface velocities to develop a statistical method to estimate crevasse initiation threshold strain rate values. We found the MSZ to be dominated by simple shear and that surface …

Going Rogue: Mobile Research Applications And The Right To Privacy, Stacey A. Tovino
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article investigates whether nonsectoral state laws may serve as a viable source of privacy and security standards for mobile health research participants and other health data subjects until new federal laws are created or enforced. In particular, this Article (1) catalogues and analyzes the nonsectoral data privacy, security, and breach notification statutes of all fifty states and the District of Columbia; (2) applies these statutes to mobile-app-mediated health research conducted by independent scientists, citizen scientists, and patient researchers; and (3) proposes substantive amendments to state law that could help protect the privacy and security of all health data subjects, …

Maritime Environmental Violations Within Nigeria & Its Impacts, Chinedu Chidia Maduekwe
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
The maritime industry contributes its own fair share of pollution within Nigerian ports and communities by way of crude oil spills and inappropriate waste management facilities. This spills often occur on wetlands needed for commercial maritime activities and economic survival by local inhibitors. The inadequate disposal of ship waste by privately owned waste management facilities can lead to the encouragement of illicit disposal of waste and ballast into the sea before registering into ports and terminals. Such waste can introduce toxic and noxious liquids into waters affecting marine lifeforms and indirectly, local communities. as a result of such incident, a …

Maryse Condé Devant Les Événments Africains Troublants: Entre Représentation Et Discours, Mouhamadou Cissé
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The repressed school strike in Guinea Conakry in 1961, the post-apartheid social crisis in South Africa and the 2002 civil war in Côte d'Ivoire are major events in African history that drew Maryse Condé's attention as illustrated through Heremakhonon (1976), Histoire de la femme cannibale (2003), En attendant la montée des eaux (2010). This article analyzes, beyond the modes of representation of events, the critical discourses that emerged from social fictions in examining murderous ideologies, the overflow of political, racial, ethnic identities as well as the obsessions of power that are at the origin of imagined conflicts. It explores how …

The birth of the Negro Renaissance movement in Harlem (USA), at the beginning of the 1920s, had a remarkable impact on the destiny of the black peoples of Africa, especially in their fight for independence. Having experienced slavery and segregation, the AfroAmerican intellectuals fought continuously in the quest for dignity and freedom. In so doing, their actions and ideas inspired their African counterparts to devise ways and means in their anticolonial fight. This impact, in addition to other factors, inherently led to the 1956 and 1959 Congresses held in Paris and Rome respectively. The purpose of these meetings was to …
