Evaluating Tree Species' Migration Potential Using Latitudinal Tree Growth Rate Across The Eastern United States, Michelle Marie Field
Evaluating Tree Species' Migration Potential Using Latitudinal Tree Growth Rate Across The Eastern United States, Michelle Marie Field
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Predicting climate-driven tree species’ future redistribution is a key element to guide preemptive forest management to mitigate the adverse consequences of climate change. This study uses the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database to determine tree species’ potential. The dynamic variable calculated in the study is the standardized growth rate residual by basal area for a ten-year period (2003-2013). Residuals of growth rate are examined by latitude within each species’ range, indicating on-going habitat preference. This study examined six, US confined species that are climate sensitive. While this study hypothesized that high growth rate residuals would be present at northern …

Do Genetic Differences Explain The Ability Of An Alkaline Shrub To Grow In Both Uplands And Wetlands?, Carol A. Rowe, Paul G. Wolf, Robert W. Lichvar
Western North American Naturalist
The hydrophyte Allenrolfea occidentalis (S. Watson) Kuntze (iodinebush) is a halophytic shrub of the arid southwest that is listed as a facultative wetland species on the National Wetland Plant List. This rating means that the species is usually a hydrophyte but occasionally is found in uplands. We tested for genetic (ecotypic) differences between plants sampled from wetlands versus uplands. We used the technique of genotyping by sequencing to generate data from 132 plants from 30 locations representing both wetland and upland occurrences for over 1300 loci. Analyses indicated that the strongest genetic signal is from differences in geographic distribution: samples …

Is Transportation Planning Effective? A Critical Review Of Long-Range Regional Transportation Planning In The United States, Razieh Nadafianshahamabadi
Civil Engineering ETDs
The Federal-Aid Highway Act requires urban areas with a population greater than 50,000 to create Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to ensure that funding for transportation projects and programs are based on a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive planning process. A major responsibility of each MPO is the creation of a long-range transportation plan (LRTP) that addresses the transportation needs of a metropolitan region over the next twenty years or more. While long-range regional transportation planning goals have grown to include a wide range of concerns and technical methods for evaluating planning scenarios have advanced substantially over the past 50 years, there …

Domain Analysis Of ‘Urban’ In Library Classification Schemes, B Preedip Balaji
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Urban is a complex domain, dealing with characteristics of life in cities to meet the needs of urban society. With a changing demography, spatial and socio-economic conditions, urbanization is experienced in the globalized cities, as half of the world’s population live in large cities and towns in 21st century. There are ongoing debates on positing ‘urban’ in social science, science and technology and in arts disciplines, which interpret and define the meaning of ‘urban.’ However, the existing disciplines are interdisciplinary, intersectional and diversified with various approaches, models and theories to study urbanism. Towards the goal of arriving at the subject …

Techniques are described herein for enhancing the slice awareness of a Radio Access Network (RAN) using a Self-Organizing Network (SON). This may solve the problem of slice allocation to a gNodeB (gNB), monitor the slice resources of the gNB and the handover of devices which are registered to a slice, and reduce handover time. In addition, the SON may push slicing policies for the gNB such as hardware based slicing, scheduler based slicing, geography based slicing, etc.
Youth And Politics: Is There Space For Youth In Cabo-Verdean Politics?, Aleida Mendes Borges
Youth And Politics: Is There Space For Youth In Cabo-Verdean Politics?, Aleida Mendes Borges
Journal of Cape Verdean Studies
All over Africa young people face serious economic, social and emotional challenges in their everyday lives as the generation hardest hit by the failures of neoliberalism (Honwana 2012). In the absence of political role models, this so-called ‘waithood generation’, has rejected traditionally understood notions of political participation associated with representative democracy and are taking the role of active citizens moving away from the ‘myopic obsession’ over voting and party systems.
In Cabo Verde in particular, where politics are characterised by vertical relations of everyday political life and citizen-state interactions, this paper analyses young people as a window to understanding broader …

Where Blackness And Cape Verdeanness Intersect: Reflections On A Monoracial And Multiethnic Reality In The United States, Callie Watkins Liu
Journal of Cape Verdean Studies
As a Black American and fourth generation Cape Verdean American growing up in the United States, I’ve found that race and ethnicity are frequently conflated in ways that obscure my social reality and identity or put two integrated parts of myself into opposition with each other. In examining my own ethno-racial experience, I use critical race studies and identity construction to disentangle the structural concepts of race and ethnicity and build a frame work for understanding my own integrated existence within the United States. My personal trajectory is situated within the current and historical sociostructural context of Diaspora, White Supremacy …

Affect & Race/(Blackness), Colin Patrick Ashley, Michelle Billies
Affect & Race/(Blackness), Colin Patrick Ashley, Michelle Billies
Publications and Research
We question the question of affect and race as one that has already built itself upon blackness and anti-blackness, such that the question a priori for an affect theory seeking to address race, we argue, is that of black ontology. We first examine various works in affect theory that theorize race through new mechanisms of discourse, works that theorize interpersonal and emotive affects, and works that have contributed to a biopolitical understanding of race, affect, and assemblage. Delving deeper into a Deleuzian legacy of affect as capacity we assert that the theoretical works of afro-pessimism and black optimism (as black …

Geoscience Faculty Research
The magmatic components of continental Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) include flood basalts and their plumbing system of giant mafic dyke swarms (radiating, linear, and the recently discovered circumferential type), mafic sill provinces, a lower crustal magmatic underplate, mafic-ultramafic (M–UM) intrusions, associated silicic magmatism, and associated carbonatites and kimberlites. This paper proposes a new plumbing system framework for mantle plume-related continental LIPs that incorporates all of these components, and provides a context for addressing key thematic aspects such as tracking magma batches “upstream” and “downstream” and their geochemical evolution, assessing the setting of M-UM intrusions and their economic potential, interpreting deep …

Character Strengths Of Ninth Grade Students In Accelerated Curricula: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Hannah L. Gilfix
Character Strengths Of Ninth Grade Students In Accelerated Curricula: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Hannah L. Gilfix
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Students in accelerated curricula tend to have greater stress when compared to students in general education (Suldo, Shaunessy, & Hardesty, 2008). It is important for stakeholders to be able to help these students reach their goals and attain happiness. One potential method to help these students is to attend to their character strengths. People who effectively utilize their character strengths have achieved numerous positive outcomes including greater levels of well-being, self-esteem, and positive affect (Proctor, Malby, & Linley, 2011; Quinlan, Swain, Cameron, & Vella-Brodrick, 2014; Wood, Linley, Maltby, Kashan, & Hurling, 2011). Unfortunately, there is a lack of research on …

Facial expression is the most effective way which humans display their emotions. Such expressions play a significant role in social communication in humans because they transmit social signals about the mental and internal emotional state. This paper addresses an important issue of the underground travel in Istanbul; the lack of social interaction which is also a reflection of negative psychological impacts of metropolitan life on individuals. Underground travel is a daily routine of a remarkable number of people in Istanbul and it is an isolating experience for most. Moreover, people living in big cities are exposed to risk factors originating …

The authors of this paper taught the course “Furniture Design and the Principles of its Construction” during the spring term 2018. While teaching this course to the students in their second year, they guided them to have a fairly different perspective on furniture design. Thus, the objective of this study is to provide the main points of that quest. In this respect, this study investigates the process of guiding the students through the design of a piece of furniture and tries to provide solutions to the insufficiency of a three-hour course for the whole class. The design methodology applied in …

In architectural education, imparting of stationary knowledge, which establish the space only as physically, is insufficient to achieve the skill that will enable the architect to find solutions to the problems that are encountered in the future. In that case, to perceive the space both tangibly and intangibly, a trans-disciplinary milieu is required to acquire the derivable knowledge and create a setting of debate and criticism over that acquired knowledge. What might be methods and approaches that can stimulate and re-shape thought, encourage curiosity to acquire creative and critical knowledge in the architectural design studio? How can new experiences and …

Why Design Students Need Application Programming Interfaces (Apis), Mahshid Farzinfar, Stan Ruecker
Learn X Design Conference Series
One of the perennial questions faced by designers, researchers, and students of design is to what extent they should develop a prototype in order to learn the most from it. In some cases, a simple paper sketch is sufficient. In others, a fully functional version is necessary in order to adequately convey the core concept. In this paper, we focus on the latter end of the spectrum, and propose that one way to quickly and efficiently create these kinds of prototypes is to identify and use one of the publicly-available application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be quickly found in …

Dietary aflatoxin exposure is a widespread problem in the developing world and causes severe negative health consequences to humans and livestock animals. A new biological control product, called Aflasafe, has been introduced in Nigeria to mitigate aflatoxin contamination of maize in the field and in storage. No known prior work has estimated how much African agribusinesses using maize for animal feed will pay for aflatoxin-safe maize. This study measured the levels of Aflasafe awareness, surveyed current aflatoxin management practices, and estimated, using choice experiments, willingness to pay (WTP) for aflatoxin-safe maize by Nigerian poultry producers and feed millers. Data was …

Altered fire regimes can drive major and enduring compositional shifts or losses of forest ecosystems. In western North America, ponderosa pine and dry mixed‐conifer forest types appear increasingly vulnerable to uncharacteristically extensive, high‐severity wildfire. However, unburned or only lightly impacted forest stands that persist within burn mosaics—termed fire refugia—may serve as tree seed sources and promote landscape recovery. We sampled tree regeneration along gradients of fire refugia proximity and density at 686 sites within the perimeters of 12 large wildfires that occurred between 2000 and 2005 in the interior western United States. We used generalized linear mixed‐effects models to elucidate …
