The Traits That Predict The Magnitude And Spatial Scale Of Forest Bird Responses To Urbanization Intensity, Grant D. Paton, Alexandra V. Shoffner, Andrew M. Wilson, Sara A. Gagné

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

As humans continue moving to urban areas, there is a growing need to understand the effects of urban intensification on native wildlife populations. Forest species in remnant habitat are particularly vulnerable to urban intensification, but the mechanisms behind these effects are poorly understood. An understanding of how species traits, as proxies for mechanisms, mediate the effects of urban intensification on forest species can help fill this knowledge gap. Using a large point count dataset from the Second Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas, we tested for the effects of species traits on the magnitude and spatial scale of the responses of 58 …

Escape Only By Thinking: Reinventing The Fred Friendly Seminar For Faculty-To-Faculty Learning At Isa, Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

The original Fred Friendly Seminar was a Socratic dialog intended for expert debate on issues of ethics and public policy. I wanted to apply the format to inter-faculty learning on issues of international relations and foreign policy, so I proposed a type of hybrid scenario, combining the detail and self-reflection of a traditional seminar with the forward motion and iterative learning potential of a war game. I recruited my fellow faculty members at five International Studies Association (ISA) Annual Conferences and ran faculty participation scenarios on topics from water security to pandemics and public health to global warming and energy …

Do Employees From Less-Healthy Communities Use More Care And Cost More? Seeking To Establish A Business Case For Investment In Community Health., Russell K. Mcintire, Martha C. Romney, Greg Alonzo, Jill Hutt, Lauren Bartolome, Greg Wood, Gary Klein, Neil I. Goldfarb

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have examined the impact of community health on employers. We explored whether employed adults and their adult dependents living in less-healthy communities in the greater Philadelphia region used more care and incurred higher costs to employers than employees from healthier communities.

METHODS: We used a multi-employer database to identify adult employees and dependents with continuous employment and mapped them to 31 zip code regions. We calculated community health scores at the regional level, by using metrics similar to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) County Health Rankings but with local data. We used descriptive analyses and multilevel …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The early Eocene (56 to 48 million years ago) is inferred to have been the most recent time that Earth's atmospheric CO2 concentrations exceeded 1000 ppm. Global mean temperatures were also substantially warmer than those of the present day. As such, the study of early Eocene climate provides insight into how a super-warm Earth system behaves and offers an opportunity to evaluate climate models under conditions of high greenhouse gas forcing. The Deep Time Model Intercomparison Project (DeepMIP) is a systematic model-model and model-data intercomparison of three early Paleogene time slices: latest Paleocene, Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) and early Eocene …

Timing And Potential Drivers Of Symbiont Selection In The Early Life Stages Of The Massive Starlet Coral Siderastrea Siderea, Sarah G. Koerner Jul 2019

Timing And Potential Drivers Of Symbiont Selection In The Early Life Stages Of The Massive Starlet Coral Siderastrea Siderea, Sarah G. Koerner

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The ability of corals to build reefs can be attributed to their relationship with single-celled algae of the familySymbiodiniaceae.Through the process of photosynthesis, these algae can provide their coral hosts with over 90% of their daily energy requirements. Most coral species acquire multiple species of symbionts from the surrounding water during their larval stage or immediately after settling. However, over time, the coral will select a dominant symbiont speciesthat can depend on the local environment. Until this study, the size or age of the coral at which this transition from multiple Symbiodiniaceaespecies to one dominant species occurs has remained …

Investigating Changes In The Chemical Composition Of Wood Upon Digestion By Wood-Boring Bivalves Of The Sub-Family Xylophagaidae, And Potential Implications For Marine Biogeochemical Cycles, Briony Cope Jul 2019

Investigating Changes In The Chemical Composition Of Wood Upon Digestion By Wood-Boring Bivalves Of The Sub-Family Xylophagaidae, And Potential Implications For Marine Biogeochemical Cycles, Briony Cope

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The sub-family of molluscs Xylophagaidae are the primary degraders of wood in the oceans. They are part of an opportunistic ecosystem, which survives on temporary falls of large organic matter, such as carcasses and wood debris. After digesting the wood with the help of symbiotic bacteria, Xylophagaidae excrete a pulp like substance, which lines the walls of their burrows. The nutrients in the broken down wood becomes accessible to other forms of life, and growing populations create anoxic environments, which encourage chemoautotrophic activity. This research aims to identify the role that Xylopohagaidae play in the biogeochemical cycles of certain elements, …

Planning Their Future Places? Investigating The Role Of Young People Within The Contemporary English Planning System In Plymouth, Alex Bertram Jul 2019

Planning Their Future Places? Investigating The Role Of Young People Within The Contemporary English Planning System In Plymouth, Alex Bertram

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Despite young people being the longest-term stakeholders in society (Simpson, 1997), academic discourses promoting the benefits of youth involvement have historically struggled to translate into widespread youth participation in planning practice (Knowles-Yanez, 2005). However, in recent years, English planning reforms (as part of the 2010 to 2015 Coalition government’s wider ‘Localism’ and Big Society’ agendas) have provided an unprecedented devolution of powers to communities (Tewdwr-Jones, 2012), most prominently through Neighbourhood Plans (Norton and Hughes, 2018). In contrast to increasing amounts of youth participation literature from a variety of countries across the globe, there has been a relative dearth of England-specific …

Thermal Oxidation And Subsequent Characterisation Of Gilsocarbon Nuclear Graphite, Thomas Swain Jul 2019

Thermal Oxidation And Subsequent Characterisation Of Gilsocarbon Nuclear Graphite, Thomas Swain

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Gilsocarbon is a graphite grade used as a main structural proponent of the current UK fleet of Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors. In this research, multiple gilsocarbon graphite samples were thermally oxidised in an attempt to simulate the effects on the graphite of radiolytic oxidation, which occurs in the reactors core. A combined technique of characterising virgin and thermally oxidised samples was taken, the Grand-canonical Monte-Carlo data from gas adsorption isotherms and mercury porosimetry intrusion data, giving percolation characteristics across the entire pore range of the graphite by stitching this data together via the simulation software PoreXpert. It was confirmed that oxidation …

The study is an interdisciplinary study as it links to both chemistry and also social science. The project investigated the learning and recall of information of year 9 students at Richard Lander School. In total 85 students participated in this study. Two top set ability groups and two bottom set ability groups were selected by the school to participate in either a non-practical or practical lesson. The students all completed a pre-lesson test to assess their knowledge of the lesson subject (chromatography) prior to the lesson. This was used to establish that the top/bottom set ability was the same for …

The Role Of Citizenship Status And Its Impact On Latinos’ Civic Engagement In The United States, Veronica Torres Luna Jul 2019

The Role Of Citizenship Status And Its Impact On Latinos’ Civic Engagement In The United States, Veronica Torres Luna

CrissCross

This paper discusses the way in which U.S. citizenship status and legal permanent resident status impacts the likelihood of involvement in civic engagement activities among Latinos in the United States. Past research has looked into various variables such as group consciousness, Spanish-media language, and importance of issues; however, specific research on citizenship status is limited. This paper analyzes data from the Pew Research Center and data obtained from individual interviews in the Midwest. The results show that citizens are more likely than residents to be involved in the community and politics. These findings have important implications in how policies are …

Multimodality In The Digital Environments Of Deaf Education (De2), Michael E. Skyer Jul 2019

Multimodality In The Digital Environments Of Deaf Education (De2), Michael E. Skyer

Presentations and other scholarship

This paper contextualizes multimodality theory in digital-epistemological paradigms and analyzes their combined effects upon operations of power in deaf pedagogical practices. Deafness is unbound by geography. Deaf people constitute a heterogeneous, globalized ethnic minority who are singularly linked. Often thought to be rendered powerless by disability, deaf people generate forms of power that disrupt conventional ontology and epistemology by way of divergent adaptations of visuospatial language modalities. As creators and users, deaf people have positioned themselves at the cutting-edge of innovation by developing and repurposing digital technologies to secure insurgent power in the face of sociopolitical oppression. This paper establishes …

Retrying Leopold And Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective, David L. Shapiro Jul 2019

Retrying Leopold And Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective, David L. Shapiro

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

They called it the crime of the century; in 1924 in Chicago two brilliant, well-educated, and wealthy young men kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy and killed him "for the thrill of it". Expert testimony was presented by several well-known psychiatrists and psychologists, but even with all their clinical insights, none could reach a conclusion about the causal relation between their disturbed childhoods and a violent senseless crime. In fact, the well-known criminal defense attorney Clarence Darrow made little mention of the extensive psychiatric and psychological workups, and the judge did not deal with it in his sentencing. A review …

Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran Jul 2019

Female Protagonist Mega-Archetypes: A Study In Medieval European Romances, Doaa Omran

English Language and Literature ETDs

Despite the claim that structuralism has sung its swan song, my research offers new insights in the field of structuralism through archetypal criticism by exploring four female hero mega-archetypes as narrative structures inspired by the Qur’an and the Bible. These scriptural narratives offer tenets, based on narratives and motifs, that, as structural units, create and identify mega-archetypes. This study posits how, rather than being extensions of existing structuralist taxonomies on the male hero monomyth, the female mega-archetypes enrich that monomythical narrative. This work details the structure of the mega-archetypes Zulaikhah (Potiphar’s wife), Sarah and Hagar, the Virgin Mary, and Queen …

Evaluating The Variability Of Urban Land Surface Temperatures Using Drone Observations, Joseph Naughton, Walter M. Mcdonald Jul 2019

Evaluating The Variability Of Urban Land Surface Temperatures Using Drone Observations, Joseph Naughton, Walter M. Mcdonald

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Urbanization and climate change are driving increases in urban land surface temperatures that pose a threat to human and environmental health. To address this challenge, we must be able to observe land surface temperatures within spatially complex urban environments. However, many existing remote sensing studies are based upon satellite or aerial imagery that capture temperature at coarse resolutions that fail to capture the spatial complexities of urban land surfaces that can change at a sub-meter resolution. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the spatial variability of land surface temperatures through drone thermal imagery captured at high-resolutions (13 …

Minimodal: Dimensional Domain Of Miniature Shipping Containers For Intermodal Freight Transportation, Lee Stapley Jul 2019

Minimodal: Dimensional Domain Of Miniature Shipping Containers For Intermodal Freight Transportation, Lee Stapley

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This study explores the feasibility of miniature shipping container usage within existing intermodal transportation (IT) supply chains. Smaller intermodal container shipments may help realign freight shipments with the most efficient transportation mode, rail. These containers embolden the dimensional domain (DD) of shipping. The shipping container dimensional domain (container size variation and modal fluidity) is widespread and results in shipments that are often larger or more infrequent than needed. The DD impacts transport mode, shipping frequency, shipment velocity, intermodal supply chain accessibility, and regional shipping networks. This study suggests that container size impacts the DD and, therefore, mode choice. As miniature …
