Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard Sep 2019

Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard

Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Polemic and Literature Surrounding the French Wars of Religion demonstrates that literature and polemic interacted constantly in sixteenth-century France, constructing ideological frameworks that defined the various groups to which individuals belonged and through which they defined their identities. Contributions explore both literary texts and more intentionally polemical texts that fall outside of the traditional literary genres. Engaging the continuous casting and recasting of opposing worldviews, this collection of essays examines literature's use of polemic and polemic's use of literature as seminal intellectual developments stemming from the religious and social turmoil that characterized this period in France.

Rise Of Science City In Zhongguancun (1951-1999), Yang Xiaolin

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

In April 1951, the Beijing Municipal Government "reserved considerable development land" in the area of "south of Tsinghua, east of Haidian, west of Beijing-Suiyuan Railway, north of Daniwan". In October 1953, Chinese Academy of Sciences settled there, and since then, there has the "formal name"-Zhongguancun. As of 1966, there were 118 research institutes directly in Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 28 in Beijing, 22 of which were at Zhongguancun. In October 1980, Chen Chunxian's "Advanced Technology Development Service Department of Beijing Plasma Society" was founded there, which opened the prelude to "Zhongguancun Electronic Street". In May 1988, the Beijing New …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Large mammals are at high risk of extinction globally. To understand the consequences of their demise for community assembly, we tracked community structure through the end- Pleistocene megafaunal extinction in North America. We decomposed the effects of biotic and abiotic factors by analyzing co-occurrence within the mutual ranges of species pairs. Although shifting climate drove an increase in niche overlap, co-occurrence decreased, signaling shifts in biotic interactions. Furthermore, the effect of abiotic factors on cooccurrence remained constant over time while the effect of biotic factors decreased. Biotic factors apparently played a key role in continental-scale community assembly before the extinctions. Specifically, …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Transpiration in humid tropical forests modulates the global water cycle and is a key driver of climate regulation. Yet, our understanding of how tropical trees regulate sap flux in response to climate variability remains elusive. With a progressively warming climate, atmospheric evaporative demand [i.e., vapor pressure deficit (VPD)] will be increasingly important for plant functioning, becoming the major control of plant water use in the twenty-first century. Using measurements in 34 tree species at seven sites across a precipitation gradient in the neotropics, we determined how the maximum sap flux velocity (vmax) and the VPD threshold at which …

Classroom Culture In The Social Studies Classroom: The Abilities Of Preservice Teachers, Sarah J. Kaka

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

The purpose of this study was to explore how secondary students interpret the classroom culture that preservice social studies teachers create during their student teaching semester. This question was answered by examining results of a survey of secondary social studies students that allowed them to evaluate the classroom culture their social studies preservice teacher created. A Student Perception Survey was used for the study, which loaded four main indicators of classroom culture. Through descriptive statistical analysis of the survey results, this study found that secondary social studies students believed their preservice teachers were most adept at creating a student-centered classroom, …

The History Curriculum And Inculcation Of National Consciousness In History Students In Ghana, Charles Adabo Oppong Sep 2019

The History Curriculum And Inculcation Of National Consciousness In History Students In Ghana, Charles Adabo Oppong

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Abstract

National consciousness plays an important role in socio-economic and political developments in many nations. Mostly, national consciousness promotes national unity, sustainable development, peace, respect for diversity, patriotism, and others. Undoubtedly, most of the variables mentioned are acquired through the study of national history. This study stems from the motivation to find out whether the Ghanaian senior high school history curriculum addresses the canons identified as variables of national consciousness. The study, therefore, aimed at examining the content of the Ghanaian history syllabus, as a curriculum document, whether it inculcates national consciousness or otherwise. 125 Form Three history students in …

Elementary Students Socially Construct Their Own Historically-Grounded Wordless Picture Books, Deborah Wooten, Jeremiah Clabough, Emily Blackstock

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

The C3 Framework by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) has placed an emphasis on elementary social studies teachers strengthening their students’ content-area literacy skills. One tool that can be paired with primary sources to accomplish this goal is wordless picture books. In this article, we discuss a one week project where a fourth grade teacher used primary sources and wordless picture books to explore the Fugitive Slave Act of the 19th century. This one week project culminated in groups creating their own historically-grounded wordless picture book. The steps and resources needed to implement this one week …

Plasticity Of Foot Muscle And Cardiac Thermal Limits In The Limpet Lottia Limatula From Locations With Differing Temperatures, Terrance Wang, Richelle L. Tanner, Eric J. Armstrong, David R. Lindberg, Jonathon H. Stillman

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Species distributions are shifting in response to increased habitat temperatures as a result of ongoing climate change. Understanding variation in physiological plasticity among species and populations is important for predicting these distribution shifts. Interspecific variation in intertidal ectotherms’ short-term thermal plasticity has been well established. However, intraspecific variation among populations from differing thermal habitats remains a question pertinent to understanding the effects of climate change on species’ ranges. In this study, we explored upper thermal tolerance limits and plasticity of those limits using a foot muscle metric and 2 cardiac metrics (Arrhenius breakpoint temperature, ABT, and flatline temperature, FLT) in …

“All Arabs Are Liars”: Arab And Muslim Stereotypes In Canadian Human Rights Law, Reem Bahdi Sep 2019

“All Arabs Are Liars”: Arab And Muslim Stereotypes In Canadian Human Rights Law, Reem Bahdi

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Stereotypes exclude, stigmatize, and burden Arabs and Muslims in Canada. This article examines three prevailing Arab and Muslim stereotypes: the conviction that Arabs and Muslims have a culturally ordained propensity towards violence; the belief that, regardless of their citizenship status, Arabs and Muslims remain foreigners who threaten Western values and; the notion that Arabs and Muslims are dishonest. The analysis rests on the facts found and conclusions reached in nine claims filed by Arab or Muslim applicants before the British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec or Canadian human rights tribunals. The tribunal decisions reveal that the terrorist profile requires the other two …

Measuring Correctional Admissions Of Aboriginal Offenders In Canada: A Relative Inter-Jurisdictional Analysis, Andrew A. Reid Sep 2019

Measuring Correctional Admissions Of Aboriginal Offenders In Canada: A Relative Inter-Jurisdictional Analysis, Andrew A. Reid

Journal of Law and Social Policy

It is widely recognized that Aboriginal peoples are overrepresented in Canada’s criminal justice system. A review of recent statistics documenting the extent of overrepresentation in Canada’s sentenced custody population, prompted the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to call upon federal, provincial, and territorial governments to take action. In anticipation of advancement toward the Commission’s “Calls to Action”, it is important to have comprehensive baseline information to which progress may be measured against in the future. Aside from basic statistics that document over-incarceration, however, little research has explored patterns of representation among Aboriginal offenders in other segments of the correctional system. Nevertheless, …

Racism And Relief Distribution In The Aftermath Of The Halifax Explosion, Mark Culligan, Katrin Macphee Sep 2019

Racism And Relief Distribution In The Aftermath Of The Halifax Explosion, Mark Culligan, Katrin Macphee

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Popular and academic histories have romanticized the Halifax Explosion. In most retellings, the Explosion united Haligonians, in suffering and in reconstruction. This article presents evidence from the Halifax Relief Commission’s Records that points to a different conclusion: African Nova Scotia claimants were discriminated against during Relief distribution efforts and pre-existing racial inequalities were reinforced. Relief workers treated the claims of African Nova Scotians with enhanced skepticism, expended minimal effort to locate those with claims, and ultimately provided less by way of compensation. Moreover, the decision of the Relief Commission to prioritize the compensation of lost property, not lost wages, systemically …

Petrography And Provenance Of Floor Sediments From The Loutra Almopias Cave (Pella, Macedonia, Greece), Ioannis Georgiadis, Katerina Chatzopoulou, Nikolaos Kantiranis, Ioakeim Ioakeimidis, Ananias Tsirambides Sep 2019

Petrography And Provenance Of Floor Sediments From The Loutra Almopias Cave (Pella, Macedonia, Greece), Ioannis Georgiadis, Katerina Chatzopoulou, Nikolaos Kantiranis, Ioakeim Ioakeimidis, Ananias Tsirambides

International Journal of Speleology

Thirty seven floor sediment samples of Upper Pleistocene age from the Loutra Almopias Cave were collected from different beds and stratigraphic columns on the basis of their induration grade, grain distribution, and paleontological findings. Channel facies make up the bulk of the clastic sediments found in the cave passages. Slackwater facies compose the final layer of all the stratigraphic sections of the examined cave. The floor sediments are mineralogically immature, since they contain many ferromagnesian minerals, feldspars (especially plagioclase) and quartz. The extensive presence of silicate minerals means that the phyllites, gneisses, schists, ophiolitic rocks and the clastic Mariam Formation …

Definition Of The Volume Of Quarries On The Riverbed At Mining Of Alluvial Sand And Gravel Materials By Using Remote Sensing Data, M. R. Bakiyev, Kh. Kh. Khasanov

Irrigation and Melioration

In connection with the growing demand for building materials in recent years, cases of uncontrolled mining of sand and gravel materials have increased in the Republic. This in turn had a negative impact on the morphology, hydrology and hydraulics of the water flow and turn led to a decrease in surface and subsurface zones, erosion of river banks, water intake regime in irrigation systems, disruption of work or destruction of transport, hydraulic and communication facilities. Problems were studied on the Chirchik River in natural conditions and using the Google Earth program. Observations found that uncontrolled mining of sand and gravel …

Genesis Of Iron And Manganese Sediments In Zoloushka Cave (Ukraine/Moldova) As Revealed By Δ13C Organic Carbon, Piotr Kotula, Viacheslav Andreychouk, Jacek Pawlyta, Leszek Marynowski, Izabela Jendrzejewska

International Journal of Speleology

Zoloushka Cave is one of the largest maze gypsum caves in the world. Mining of the gypsum bedrock and lowering of the water level due to the pumping of groundwater led to exposure of the cave passages to vadose conditions and changed the hydrochemistry of the karst water. As a result, large quantities of Fe and Mn hydroxides were deposited in the passages. It was found that at least two groups of various organisms were involved in depositing ferrous and manganese sediments. In order to establish the mechanism of deposition, we conducted chemical analyses of the sediments and isotopic analyses …
