In what circumstances can transnational business governance interactions (TBGIs)—the myriad overlaps, intersections, conflicts, collisions and synergies amongst the actors and institutions involved in transnational regulation of business activity—be harnessed to enhance the quality of transnational regulation and advance the interests of marginalized actors? This chapter introduces the concept of transnational business governance interactions (TBGIs), summarizes the TBGI analytical framework and defines regulatory quality and marginalized actors. It proposes to investigate the relationship between TBGIs, regulatory quality and marginalized actors at three levels: regulatory capacities, outputs and outcomes. The chapter presents the plan of the book and summarizes the key messages …

Variability Of Midtropospheric Humidity And Its Modulation Of Convective Precipitation, Steven Simon
Variability Of Midtropospheric Humidity And Its Modulation Of Convective Precipitation, Steven Simon
Open Access Theses
The spatiotemporal distribution of tropospheric moisture plays a significant role in modulating the global climate system and its associated variability on a multitude of scales. Along with its role in regulating tropospheric temperatures via various direct and indirect radiative effects, tropospheric water vapor and its phase changes in the Global Tropics provide large sources of latent heating and cooling, which in turn drive vertical and horizontal transport processes that drive convection and the underlying global hydrological cycle. Past hydrological studies, using both observational retrievals and model simulations, have investigated the contemporaneous link between sustained tropical deep convective rainfall and variations …
Demographic Trends Of Walkable Cities In The United States, Christine Leonhardt
Demographic Trends Of Walkable Cities In The United States, Christine Leonhardt
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
Walkable cities have become attractive places to live in recent years as they benefit resident’s well-being. Walkable cities have a positive correlation with a population that is young, educated, safe, and healthy. In cities with high-walkability, residents are encouraged to walk more, rather than use a car for each outing, which counters obesity and a sedentary lifestyle, a grim atmosphere, and unsafe surroundings. Most research on walkability and demographics is limited to case studies comparing city neighborhoods, whereas this research encompasses 108 United States cities with a population over 200,000 people. This research goes beyond a city’s walk score, established …

Accessing Bioenergy Potential Based On Loblolly Pine Residues Using Based-Gis Models In Virginia, Gia Nguyen, Erik Lyttek, Meghann Smith, Taylor Wieczerak
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
There is a lack of an assured supply of biomass feedstock for the bioenergy industry, which is often considered a prerequisite for more significant investments in biomass conversion capacity in the US. Cellulosic feedstocks offer the potential to reduce the diversion of food grains (e.g., corn) for energy production, thereby eliminating the food vs. fuel debate. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is a perennial evergreen tree found throughout the southern United States and is essential for commercial timber. It proliferates readily, has low maintenance needs, long life expectancy, and is a dependable source of woody biomass. The study aims …
Strategic Analysis Of New Jersey's Lsrp Program By Applying A Combined Swot-Ahp Technique, Robert Oleksy
Strategic Analysis Of New Jersey's Lsrp Program By Applying A Combined Swot-Ahp Technique, Robert Oleksy
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
In 2009 the Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA) was established which created the Licensed Site Remediation Professions (LSRP) program. LSRPs can provide remediation services without delayed approval from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The result allows for prompt development of contaminated sites. Ten years after its passage, SRRA 2.0 will soon be introduced. To assist in its strategic development, a modified Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats - Analytical Hierarch Process (SWOT-AHP) will be applied to four stockholder groups to determine each groups' preferences of the current LSRP program. The four groups include government/legal entities, business/trade organizations, non-government …

Road Deicing Salts On Groundwater In The Upper Passaic River Basin, New Jersey, Connor Firor, Peter Soriano, Faith Justice, Felix Oteng, Duke Ophori
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
It is known that the use of road deicers is beneficial, but road salts have also been shown to affect surface water and groundwater quality. This study conducted major ion concentration analyses on groundwater samples collected by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for the Upper Passaic River Basin (UPRB). Results show that the contribution of chloride to total dissolved solids increased significantly by 2010. Trend plots show strong correlation of increases in sodium and chloride with time that are not observed with other major ions such as calcium and magnesium. Decadal bivariate plots of sodium versus chloride show strong …
Life Cycle Assessment Of Pelletized Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Residues For Coal Co-Firing In Virginia, Michael Fowler
Life Cycle Assessment Of Pelletized Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Residues For Coal Co-Firing In Virginia, Michael Fowler
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
The goal of this study is to develop a real-world scenario life cycle with efficient, realistic, geologistics and minimum input demands. Woody biomass is projected to become a growing percentage of domestic electricity generation as a renewable fuel source. However, concerns persist regarding energy content, waste, emissions, ability to provide adequate biomass supply, and policies. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) is a short rotation woody crop grown in a substantial portion of the Southeastern United States for lumber and paper pulpwood. Once harvested, the fast-growing softwood can be delimbed and debarked leaving 20% of the biomass as underutilized residues. …

Human Wildlife Conflict And Likelihood To Report The Loss: A Case Study Of Nepal, Gita Bhushal Adhikary, Pankaj Lal, Bernabas Wolde
Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)
Globally, populations living in proximity to conservation areas have experienced some level of wildlife conflict, ranging from crop loss to severe human injury. Various compensation schemes already exist in developed nations where victims report the conflict and receive compensation for the loss sustained. However, in developing countries, victims face more challenges pertaining to reporting losses to authorities. We used the Banke National Park in Nepal, where literature addressing human-wildlife conflict issues is lacking, as a case study to explore possible factors influencing the propensity to report losses. We surveyed 197 participants; 100% reported suffering from crop raids by wild animals, …

The contrast in the emissivity spectra of phosphorite and associated carbonate rock can be used as a guide to delineate phosphorite within dolomite. The thermal emissivity spectrum of phosphorite is characterized by a strong doublet emissivity feature with their absorption minima at 9 µm and 9.5 µm; whereas, host rock dolomite has relatively subdued emissivity minima at ~9 µm. Using the contrast in the emissivity spectra of phosphorite and dolomite, data obtained by the thermal bands of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor were processed to delineate phosphorite within dolomite. A decorrelation stretched ASTER radiance composite could …

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations
The Poster Presentation will consist of the reasons and steps taken to reevaluate/reprocess the Holt-Atherton Special Collections book collection, and the results. When the project was first started, it was found that several of the books thought to be cataloged were actually not. Now that the project is drawing to a close all previous items not discoverable can now be found and are accessible to our patrons. The project also brought to light several “hidden treasures” that can now be used in classes given in Special Collections. For example a fore-edged painted book that was unknown is not cataloged as …

Deer Harvesting Total By Districk Since 1997, Hunter Heitkamp
Deer Harvesting Total By Districk Since 1997, Hunter Heitkamp
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Since 1997, St. John's Abbey Arboretum has collected data on deer harvested in each district, but that data has never been aggregated and mapped. With the help of John Geissler's data that has been through the years, deer harvesting will be mapped by district, including age and sex information. By examining shapefiles of the districts and adding each yearly excel data by spatial joins, the deer population will be presented through graduated colors. John Geissler and hunters will be informed which districts are more likely to contain deer.

Energizing Education In Minnesota: Proximity Of Conventional And Renewable Facilities To Universities, Margeaux Pederson
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Minnesota has taken significant initiative tackling the global energy crisis while addressing energy security, education, availability, and prices within communities across the state. With no coal, oil, or natural gas reserves, the state was free from fossil fuel dependence and able to quickly begin its renewable energy economy. I am interested in identifying locations of major fossil fuel and renewable energy powered plants across Minnesota and understand the locality of each source to a higher education campus. From this, I plan to examine higher education institutions highly dedicated to advancing the research, implementation, and project development of renewable energy resources …
Humanity's Addiction: A Comparison Of The Enivornmental Impacts Of Cane Sugar And Corn Syrup, Mallory Jarvi
Humanity's Addiction: A Comparison Of The Enivornmental Impacts Of Cane Sugar And Corn Syrup, Mallory Jarvi
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
The production of sugar has changed in the twenty-first century from natural cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup. In light of climate change, and creating a sustainable environment, which sweet substance is more sustainable while still being able to keep up with global sugar demand? Through the analysis of scholarly articles and books, the impacts these sweeteners have on the environment can be studied to generate a conclusion. Cane sugar and high-fructose corn syrup both produce large amount carbon emissions and degrade the environment, so the answer may be to produce and consume less sugar as a whole.
Running Interest In Minnesota Cities, Augie Witkowski
Running Interest In Minnesota Cities, Augie Witkowski
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Running, while often portrayed as an approachable sport, can be difficult to begin to do as shoes and races can be fairly expensive. Other people and groups of people can be discouraged from running for social reasons. Studying how running interest correlates to demographic information can give insight into why people do not express interest in running. This information was studied specifically in the state of Minnesota, in cities with populations larger than 50,000 people. Using available census data for these cities, and the US Track and Field website of running routes these two factors were compared to each other. …
