Using Pimephales Promelas>/Em> As An Indicator Species For The Presence Of Endocrine Disruptors In Nebraskan Streams, Megan Rosno
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Specific sites in Southeast and Southwest Nebraska were chosen to add to the collective knowledge on how cattle feed lot effluents continue to have significant effects downstream of their point source locations. Both locations were sampled via seining net in first: 40.241249 latitude, -95.616191 longitude (near Barada, Nebraska), and second: 41.117368 latitude, -100.794332 longitude (directly South of North Platte in the South Platte River). They were chosen not only for their proximity to differing livestock practices of pasture vs. feed lot, but also where locals fish for the best bait fish including but not limited to fathead minnows (Pimephales …
Seventh Grade Students' Understanding Of A Groundwater Modeling Tool, Holly White
Seventh Grade Students' Understanding Of A Groundwater Modeling Tool, Holly White
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Water is a core topic in standards for science teaching and learning across the K-12 continuum (NGSS Lead States, 2013; National Research Council [NRC], 1966), though research has shown that the American public may possess relatively underdeveloped ideas about water systems (AMNH, 2005). Those who have a better understanding of groundwater systems tend to recognize the impacts that overuse has and express greater concern about conservation of the resource (Pan and Liu 2018). One way to support students’ learning about groundwater is through the use of groundwater modeling tools. Computer-based models have been shown to be effective in supporting K-12 …
Nitrate Accumulation In The Vadose Zone Of Waverly's Wellhead Protection Area, Cleome Mullison
Nitrate Accumulation In The Vadose Zone Of Waverly's Wellhead Protection Area, Cleome Mullison
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Agriculturally intensive areas such as Nebraska are faced with a growing threat: groundwater nitrate pollution caused by years of applying nitrogen based fertilizer. Nitrate pollution can be attributed to several factors such as manure from cattle ranching and wastewater plants, but Nebraska’s main threat is derived from years of leached nitrogen fertilizer. When nitrogen fertilizer is applied it has one of several fates: plant uptake, volatilization, leaching or run-off. When nitrates leach beyond the plant root system, they are unable to be absorbed by the plant and ultimately move slowly towards the regional ground water table. While nitrate accumulation in …
How A Changing Climate Impacts Apple Production In Nebraska, Logan Winters
How A Changing Climate Impacts Apple Production In Nebraska, Logan Winters
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Since the industrial revolution, there has been an exponential increase in global fossil fuel use. This excessive use and burning of fossil fuels has caused a significant increase in carbon dioxide concentrations in our atmosphere. These greater concentrations of carbon dioxide have been found to have a correlation to increasing temperatures on earth as a whole as the concentration of carbon dioxide, along with other fossil fuel emissions, continue to also increase. The end result of this cycle is that we have warming on a global scale which leads to a changing climate.
The fact that the climate is changing …
Drought Perceptions And Management Techniques For Outdoor Recreation In The Great Plains, Lauren Uhlig
Drought Perceptions And Management Techniques For Outdoor Recreation In The Great Plains, Lauren Uhlig
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Outdoor recreation generates nearly $887 billion dollars in annual consumer spending and improves quality of life by promoting physical activity (Oftedal & Schneider, 2013; Outdoor Industry Association, 2017b). This industry relies heavily on the environment and these societal benefits are at risk as climate fluctuates. Drought is a regular component of the Great Plains climate (Miao et al., 2007) and can alter the landscape, changing the demand for outdoor recreation and creating challenges for managing recreation opportunities (USDA, 2017). This thesis explores the influence of drought on individual’s willingness to participate in outdoor recreation, the variation in that influence across …
Hydroponics: Effect Of Ph On Different Cucumber Varieties, Mikaela Krumrei
Hydroponics: Effect Of Ph On Different Cucumber Varieties, Mikaela Krumrei
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Plants are generally grown using soil as the main medium to supply the essentials necessary for growth, but as population grows and land decreases it is important to expand the knowledge of other growth mediums such as hydroponics. The purpose of this study is to provide information on hydroponic growing systems, specifically how the pH of the water effects cucumber plant growth and if different varieties of cucumber plants may have varying reactions to the pH. The hypothesis was that the plants would grow efficiently at pH of 5.0 and worst at pH of 7.5. This experiment was conducted in …
The Effect Of Land Development In Small Communities On A People's Sense Of Place, Alivia Michalski
The Effect Of Land Development In Small Communities On A People's Sense Of Place, Alivia Michalski
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Sense of place is an extensively researched concept that refers to the relationship (cultural, economic, societal, spiritual, and physical) between a person and their surroundings. Often a person’s sense of place, or connection to the land, can lead them to develop strong place attachment, or a human-place bond, with certain physical locations. Studies done on place attachment show that people with strong connections to natural areas where they live are more willing to demonstrate environmentally responsible behavior. This kind of behavior is important in the upcoming years, as communities begin to expand, develop more land, and use more resources. In …
Sustainable Dietary Solutions To A Multi-Dimensional Epidemic: A Practical Application Of The Mediterranean Diet To Nebraska, Samuel A. Virgillito
Sustainable Dietary Solutions To A Multi-Dimensional Epidemic: A Practical Application Of The Mediterranean Diet To Nebraska, Samuel A. Virgillito
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
There is substantial evidence to suggest the major health and environmental benefits of the Mediterranean diet. When compared to the Western Pattern diet, the Mediterranean diet consistently ranks higher by both of these measures. Considering a looming environmental crisis and an already present health epidemic, a major dietary shift and overhaul of the current food system in America is necessary. Yet few studies aim to suggest the transferability of the Mediterranean diet to regions outside of the Mediterranean basin. Nebraska offers a unique case study as it reflects the contextually poor health of Americans and boasts a massive agriculture industry …
Critical Wedges And Penetrative Strain: How Does Penetrative Strain Alter The Concept Of A Critical Wedge?, Nicole L. Smith
Critical Wedges And Penetrative Strain: How Does Penetrative Strain Alter The Concept Of A Critical Wedge?, Nicole L. Smith
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
By definition, a critical wedge shows limited internal deformation, and, also by definition, penetrative strain is deformation occurring on a microscale within a deforming rock sequence. Critical wedge theory is typically used to understand the development of fold thrust belts, where variables such as the internal and basal friction, surface taper and dip of the décollement are taken into account. Numerical modeling shows that the minimum stable surface taper is dependent on the basal friction and the overburden, but that there are a range of possible tapers for a stable wedge. This study presents a series of analog models, where …
Examining The Effects Of Uv On Latex And Nitrile Glove Degradation, Dana Christine Handke
Examining The Effects Of Uv On Latex And Nitrile Glove Degradation, Dana Christine Handke
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Medical gloves, both nitrile and latex, are used as a protective barrier to limit the spread of disease. Gloves are a single use product and their demand is set to increase by 9 to10 percent each year. In 2008, it was estimated that 100 billion gloves were used globally each year (Scott, 2008). This study is exploratory in nature, to determine if Ultra Violet light (UV) exposure can cause an acceleration in the breakdown of latex and nitrile gloves. It was hypothesized that the tensile strength and length to breakage for both glove types, latex and nitrile, would decrease after …

The purpose of this study is to research the feasibility of implementing more green roofs around The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s campuses. To do this investigation a systematic literature review process was used gathering multiple relevant, peer reviewed articles from UNL’s “Encore” search engine. The data was then organized into categories that described the necessary considerations that needed to be made to retrofit green roofs, information on their many benefits, and finally the potential energy cost savings that can be obtained through use of a green roof. From here a proposal for a model green roof on top of UNL’s Hardin …
Changes In Plant Phenology In The Central United States In Response To Climate Change, Sarah Fagras
Changes In Plant Phenology In The Central United States In Response To Climate Change, Sarah Fagras
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Plant phenophases are highly sensitive to changes in temperature, precipitation, and photoperiod and have recently been identified as an indicator of climate change. Flowering time in particular appears to be sensitive to changes in temperature and plants around the world have already been observed flowering earlier than previously recorded. To determine how plants in the Midwest and Great Plains have reacted to climate change from the 1880s to present, 1,926 plant specimens made up of 10 species were examined to determine their phenophase and date of collection for each specimen was recorded. Analysis of these specimens shows that flowering time …

What Are The Prospects For -Omics-Based Molecular Technologies In Cancer Diagnostics And Treatment, Katya Eriksen
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, following the heart disease. New technologies are needed to fight and eventually to eradicate cancer. Omic technologies is a new emerging field of cancer research that may offer cancer patients long awaited opportunities to get faster, more precise personalized medical care, while letting doctors do their job more effectively. The rapid development of omic technologies and large datasets promise a new type of health care system when the patients can be treated according to their own individualized molecular characteristics.
The Impact Of Urbanization And Land-Use Change In Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew Rose
The Impact Of Urbanization And Land-Use Change In Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew Rose
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
This study will take place in Lincoln Nebraska to investigate population density and urban encroachment onto agricultural lands. With urbanization on the rise we will inevitably face land use issues in the future. This research will investigate one strategy on how to build the city of Lincoln while using agriculture as a focal point. Keeping land sparing techniques in mind as we build will be an important component to saving enough land to grow food, shelter, and clothing for a growing population. One important question that will be looked at in this research is how urban expansion has consumed agricultural …

Activity Patterns Of Nebraskan Wildlife On A Prairie Landscape, Dillon Hanson
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Avoiding a particular species temporally can be an effective way to live amongst predator and competing species when spatial avoidance is not available. If a predator and prey species overlap temporally there is potential for high predation of the prey species by the predator, while if two predators overlap temporally there is high potential for competition and a loss of opportunities and resources for each species. I assessed if native mammalian species on a natural prairie landscape showed signs of avoidance through their activity patterns. I used photographic sampling to quantify the temporal activity patterns of species at Spring Creek …

Nitrate Contamination And Nitrogen Isotope Compositions In The Bazile Groundwater Management Area: A Water Quality Study. Creighton, Ne, Sydney Corcoran
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Surface water nitrogen contamination is a pervasive issue in Nebraska, and agricultural practices are the main source of nitrogen input to streams (Spalding and Exner, 1993). Nitrate can come from inorganic fertilizers such as anhydrous ammonia, or animal waste. Studies have been conducted on nitrates dating back to 1947 (Addleman, 1985). The Bazile Groundwater Management Area (BGMA) located in northeast Nebraska has historically had high nitrate contamination. This qualitative study assesses the seasonal sources of nitrogen to stream water. It is predicted that the source of input is from commercial synthetic fertilizers. By using nitrogen- oxygen isotope methods, the source …
A Data-Driven Approach For Detecting Stress In Plants Using Hyperspectral Imagery, Suraj Gampa
A Data-Driven Approach For Detecting Stress In Plants Using Hyperspectral Imagery, Suraj Gampa
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A phenotype is an observable characteristic of an individual and is a function of its genotype and its growth environment. Individuals with different genotypes are impacted differently by exposure to the same environment. Therefore, phenotypes are often used to understand morphological and physiological changes in plants as a function of genotype and biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Phenotypes that measure the level of stress can help mitigate the adverse impacts on the growth cycle of the plant. Image-based plant phenotyping has the potential for early stress detection by means of computing responsive phenotypes in a non-intrusive manner. A large number …

How Are University's Handling Dining Hall Food Waste: Unl Study, Macrae Zappala
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
One of the biggest challenges with the American food system is that 30-40% of our food is wasted every year (EPA, 2018). There are many reasons why food is being wasted around Universities campuses, and there are many ways to divert that wasted material from the landfill. In 2016, a zero-food waste event was held in Harper dining hall, and they found around 70 pounds a night just from a dinner rush. The main objective is aimed to find out how the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) handles their dining hall food waste. This study will look at what Big …

Landuse And Soil Property Effects On Infiltration And Soil Aggregate Stability In The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Rebecca Lynn Anderson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Following European settlement of the Lower Mississippi River Valley (LMRV), agricultural expansion and unsustainable, agriculturally related practices have caused groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and surface water contamination by eroded sediments and sediment-bound nutrients to become major environmental threats to the region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of common landuses [i.e., native prairie, deciduous forest, coniferous forest, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) grassland, and conventional-tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) agriculture] on surface water infiltration and aggregate-stability-related properties [i.e., water-stable macroaggregate (WSA) size distribution, total water-stable macroaggregate (TWSA) concentration, and mean weight diameter (MWD)]. The overall infiltration rate …

University of New Hampshire, May 2019
Global cropland products are continuously being produced at different spatial resolutions using remotely sensed satellite imagery. Recently, with our increased accessibility to higher computing processing, three different cropland extent maps have been developed as a part of Global Food Security-Support Analysis Data (GFSAD) project at three spatial resolutions (i.e., GFSAD1km, GFSAD250m, and GFSAD30m). All cropland maps should be assessed for their accuracy, errors, and uncertainty for various agriculture monitoring applications. However, in previous assessment efforts appropriate assessment strategies have not always been …

The (Next) Big Short And The End Of The Anthropocene, M. Alexander Pearl
Utah Law Review
It is incredibly difficult to imagine an event the likes of which humans have never seen before. That, in and of itself, renders the challenge to prepare for such an event even more difficult because there is no frame of reference pushing us to act. How do you prepare to avoid something which has never occurred in the history of human occupation? That is the challenge of climate change.
I argue that the Subprime Mortgage Crisis and its aftermath parallel the Climate Crisis in critical ways that should inform our tactics. Of course, there are obvious critical differences as well. …

Households' Preferences And Willingness To Pay For Hydrological Services In Veracruz, Mexico, Ian Mcginnis
Master's Theses and Capstones
Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) are transfer payments from governing bodies, households, firms, or non-governmental organizations to incentivize natural resource owners and managers to carry out environmental conservation efforts that promote the provision of ecosystem services. PES programs targeting reduction of deforestation have gained popularity due to the extensive ecosystem services of forests including carbon storage, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and the provision of hydrological services (HS), the ecosystem services that provide benefits such as water quality improvement, water damage mitigation, and non-use value.
There is evidence in the literature that PES programs, while theoretically beneficial, face issues with long-term financial …

Northeast Ohio (NEO) is an 18-county region which encompasses four different Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs); MSAs commonly refer to the labor market of a given area (for this study: the Akron MSA, the Canton-Massillon MSA, the Cleveland-Elyria MSA, a part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA MSA) and remaining rural counties (“non-MSA counties”). Within NEO, these four distinct metro areas have different industry structures. Investigating the internal dynamics of each region’s economic driver industries—what we call Groups of Regional Industry Drivers (GRIDs)—can inform local leaders and economic development practitioners of expanding and emerging industries to foster regional growth.
Economic trends in NEO …

The recycling of plastic is a critical informal economy in Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums located in the heart of Mumbai. Waste from dumping grounds is manually collected, sorted and prepared by recyclers who transform trash into a commodity to be sold back into the city as a substance with value. As part of top-down efforts to redevelop Dharavi’s valuable land with condominium towers, the Mumbai government has tarnished the industry’s image by labelling it as “polluting,” and has increased the cost of utilities such as electricity in an effort to drive it out of the community. As it …

Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) Vocal Responses To Sonar And Spectrally Pink Background Noise, Maria Zapetis
Dissertations
As human populations rise, the level of man-made noise increases globally. Naval sonar and boat traffic are underwater sound sources of particular concern to marine mammal welfare. To better understand the impact of these noise increases on cetaceans, studies can explore animals’ behavioral changes in response to noise. Studies have investigated the ‘dose-response’ relationship between the received sound pressure level of sonar signals and the behavior of cetaceans in the wild, but exposure studies in controlled environments are limited. The studies in this dissertation examined bottlenose dolphin vocal modifications during various experimental noise treatments. Acoustic recordings previously obtained for bottlenose …
