Measurements of alkylamines from seawater and atmospheric samples collected simultaneously across the Antarctic Peninsula, South Orkney and South Georgia Islands are reported. Concentrations of mono-, di- and trimethylamine (MMA, DMA and TMA, respectively), and their precursors, the quarternary amines glycine betaine and choline, were enhanced in sympagic sea water samples relative to ice-devoid pelagic ones, suggesting the microbiota of sea ice and sea ice-influenced ocean is a major source of these compounds. Primary sea-spray aerosol particles artificially generated by bubbling seawater samples were investigated by Aerosol Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (ATOFMS) of single particles; their mixing state indicated that alkylamines were …

Teacher Perceptions Of Environmental Science In Rural Northwestern New Mexico Public Schools, Marie Quiahuitl Julienne May 2019

Teacher Perceptions Of Environmental Science In Rural Northwestern New Mexico Public Schools, Marie Quiahuitl Julienne

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

In this study, I explored what teachers perceive as the factors that impact their teaching of environmental science in rural secondary level schools in northwestern New Mexico. I adapted Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological systems model, based on four environmental subsystem levels (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem), as the conceptual framework to address the major research question of this study, and developed 18 interview questions to explore teachers’ perceptions of factors that influence their teaching of environmental science. I investigated the perspectives science teachers have about environmental science topics and the influences they perceive that affect how they teach environmental science, and …

Cave Temperature And Management Implications In Lehman Caves, Great Basin National Park, Usa, Stanka Šebela, Gretchen Baker, Barbara Luke

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Cave air temperature was measured at six locations in Lehman Caves (USA) for one year at hourly intervals. Lehman is a show cave in a national park, treasured for its geological and biological resources. The two monitoring locations that are off of the tour route and, also, relatively distant from the cave’s entrances displayed nearly constant air temperature during the year. The other four sites, along the tour route, show daily temperature variation as well as annual fluctuation. After visitation levels decreased in the autumn, cave temperatures lagged but eventually reached an equilibrium which demonstrates recovery in the quiet winter. …

Understanding Ngos And Their Effectiveness Through A Comparative Study Of Their Role In Redd+, Jessica Russo May 2019

Understanding Ngos And Their Effectiveness Through A Comparative Study Of Their Role In Redd+, Jessica Russo

Political Science Student Scholarship

This thesis explores the following question: what roles do NGOs play and how effective may they be in efforts at global governance? Through a comparative case study analysis of NGOs advocating for Reducing Emissions for Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and NGOs implementing REDD+ projects, specifically the Surui Forest Carbon Project located in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, I examine whether NGOs are more effective taking on the role as advocates or policy implementers. For this work, I will argue that independent of the multiplicity of roles that NGOs play, their effectiveness is a function of the level of their …

A Cartography Of Roots: An Exploration Of Plant Communication, Place, And Story, Mariko Oyama Thomas May 2019

A Cartography Of Roots: An Exploration Of Plant Communication, Place, And Story, Mariko Oyama Thomas

Communication ETDs

This study uses oral history and auto-ethnography to collect thematic data on relationships and communication between plants and people in New Mexico, USA. Western and industrial cultures tend to be plant-blind, which is extremely dangerous in the wake of climate disruption and associated loss of plant biodiversity. This study works to collect and produce a generative landscape of narratives of non-binary relationships between humans and plants. These narratives show a range of hopeful, relational connections between human and more-than-human worlds. Overall results indicated the existence of many positive relationships between plants and people in the Western world, and that these …

Building An Ecological Church: Laudato Si’, Climate Change, And Clergy In The Roman Catholic Diocese Of Syracuse, Dominic Wilkins May 2019

Building An Ecological Church: Laudato Si’, Climate Change, And Clergy In The Roman Catholic Diocese Of Syracuse, Dominic Wilkins

Theses - ALL

Interest in the relationships between the Catholic Church and the environment has grown in recent years, especially following Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’, or On the Care for Our Common Home. His letter was widely praised by many Catholic and non-Catholic scholars, journalists, and activists who suggested that this encyclical marked a massive shift in Catholic views about the environment, particularly the climate crisis. Yet despite this early hope, policies around the world remain generally unchanged and the promise early commentators saw in Laudato Si’ lies unfulfilled.

This thesis investigates whether the Catholic Church has attempted to act on …

Desiring Devastated Landscapes: Love After Ecological Collapse, Courtney Eleanor O'Dell-Chaib May 2019

Desiring Devastated Landscapes: Love After Ecological Collapse, Courtney Eleanor O'Dell-Chaib

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation examines arguments within religion and ecology, particularly within the ecospiritual movement and methodology called the new cosmology, that humans should cultivate and sustain emotional relationships with nature by caring for nonhuman others as our evolutionary kin. Focusing on the U.S. Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and the British Petroleum oil spill, I argue that new cosmology affords few opportunities to think about intimacies with severely damaged and toxic environments. I consider how to rethink common themes in religion and ecology, like sacrality, kinship, and hope, within the context of encounters with toxic creatures and damaged ecosystems. …

Application Of X-Ray Grating Interferometry To Polymer/Flame Retardant Blends In Additive Manufacturing, Omoefe Joy Kio May 2019

Application Of X-Ray Grating Interferometry To Polymer/Flame Retardant Blends In Additive Manufacturing, Omoefe Joy Kio

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

X-ray grating interferometry is a nondestructive tool for visualizing the internal structures of samples. Image contrast can be generated from the absorption of X-rays, the change in phase of the beam and small-angle X-ray scattering (dark-field). The attenuation and differential phase data obtained complement each other to give the internal composition of a material and large-scale structural information. The dark-field signal reveals sub-pixel structural detail usually invisible to the attenuation and phase probe, with the potential to highlight size distribution detail in a fashion faster than conventional small-angle scattering techniques. This work applies X-ray grating interferometry to the study of …

Making Sustainability Accessible: Green Affordable Housing Development In The South Bronx, Natalie A. Bartfay

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses green affordable housing initiatives in the South Bronx and the contemporary policy and development practices which support its rise. Additionally, it argues that this type of infrastructure is an effective measure in bridging the gap between affordability and sustainability in low-income neighborhoods, making sustainable and livable lifestyles more accessible to people who have been unable to access it up to this point. Correlating housing and income data with patterns of personal sustainability practices, this paper examines the South Bronx and the rise of the development of affordable housing projects that champions sustainability there. In the first two …

This Land Is My Land: The Complex Land Ethics At The Heart Of The Occupation Of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Fi V. Whalen May 2019

This Land Is My Land: The Complex Land Ethics At The Heart Of The Occupation Of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Fi V. Whalen

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis closely examines the occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by conservative activists in 2016 as well as the historical and political parameters that allowed the event to occur in modern-day rural Oregon. First, the occupiers, members of local and national chapters of the Patriot movement, are considered along with their conservative ideological predecessors. The historical-political origins of Oregon - with its storied direct democracy system and a resulting culture of staunch populism - give insight into the regional support for the occupiers. A meticulous examination of the event provides a window into deeper ethical discussions of land tenure …

Chapter 2 contains historical studies focused on the environmental impacts of festivals, sporting events, and the Olympic games. I detail the history of the entertainment industry dating back to early Roman times and connect the environmental history within the entertainment …

Ecotourism Development In Indigenous Communities: A Mapuche Case Study, Shaelynn Taylor Nuckel May 2019

Ecotourism Development In Indigenous Communities: A Mapuche Case Study, Shaelynn Taylor Nuckel

Student Theses 2015-Present

Ecotourism has been hailed as a way for indigenous communities to conserve biodiversity, promote environmental education, and drive economic development in exotic destination areas. In practice, ecotourism has often failed to meet its intended goals. Utilizing a case study of indigenous Mapuche communities in Chile’s Coast of Carahue, where ecotourism infrastructure is emerging but still largely underdeveloped, this thesis examines the potential for ecotourism to be used as a tool for sustainable development, environmental conservation, and socio-political empowerment. It examines the complex interaction of factors involved in local indigenous ecotourism development, and assesses how these factors shape the ability of …

A Fishy Problem: Effects Of Atlantic Salmon Farming In The Pacific Ocean, Madeleine A. Griffith

Student Theses 2015-Present

In this report, I explore the historical, climatological, economic, and ethical issues created by the contemporary industrial salmon farming practices off Pacific coast of the United States and Canada. Chapter 1 utilizes a variety of sources from Stephen Hume’s A Stain upon the Sea to Miller’s Living in the Environment, to examine the integral part salmon plays in both freshwater and marine ecosystems, the ecosystem services salmon contribute in wild and farmed settings, and the trends in salmon consumption around the world. Chapter 2 examines the historically relevant role salmon held among indigenous societies and how that role has changed …

The Breath Of The Bronx: Limited Greenspace And Poor Respiratory Health, Eric Patrick Mcloughney May 2019

The Breath Of The Bronx: Limited Greenspace And Poor Respiratory Health, Eric Patrick Mcloughney

Student Theses 2015-Present

Respiratory issues like asthma are common across the globe. So why does a borough in one of the most developed cities in the world have the worst asthma rates in the United States? This paper looks at the disadvantages that the Bronx, New York faces due to its poor air quality, particularly the increased risk of respiratory illness and disease. It examines the benefit of green spaces and parks on human health. Tree coverage and increased oxygen outputs are proven to lessen the risk of respiratory issues. While it is the “greenest” borough in New York, much of the Bronx’s …

The New Veggie Tale: Increasing Access To Sustainably-Grown Food In The U.S., Vanessa Ryan May 2019

The New Veggie Tale: Increasing Access To Sustainably-Grown Food In The U.S., Vanessa Ryan

Student Theses 2015-Present

Since the mid-twentieth century and the green revolution, industrialized agriculture has required fertilizer, pesticides, excess water and added energy that typically comes from fossil fuels, all of which contribute to climate change while threatening human and environmental health. The goals of this thesis are to illustrate the well-documented environmental degradation caused by various industrial farming techniques; to suggest alternative, sustainable farming practices that preserve and promote the vitality of soil and other natural resources; to examine the unequal power of large agribusiness corporations to influence food production and distribution policies; to assess the current federal policies in place that have …

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities1,2. This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity3–6. Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean BMI segregated by place of residence (a rural or urban area) from 1985 to 2017. We show that, contrary to the dominant paradigm, more than 55% …

Nature As Privilege: How Environmental Racism Changes The Access To Fresh Air And The Effects On New York City’S Communities, Sarah C. Morrison

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper serves to addresses the issue of environmental racism in relation to New York City, and more specifically comparing the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn, often characterized as low-income and high-minority populations with their white counterparts. New York, among other urban centers in the United States serves as an example of environmental racism because of the discrepancy in high air pollution levels in marginalized communities, the subsequent negative health effects (specifically asthma), and the lack of green spaces. The root of this issue is prominent in the history and construction of New York during the 1900s. The construction of …

Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt May 2019

Environmental Data Visualizations: Opportunities For Technical Communication Research, Alissa Schmidt

Technical Communication Capstone Course

Environmental issues touch nearly every field. Technical communication researchers have advocated for multidisciplinary environmental communication research to effectively address the depth of environmental issues and speed at which environmental issues evolve. Visuals are often used in environmental communication to help clarify complex information. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the author utilizes secondary research to answer the question, ‘how do data visualizations support environmental communication?’ This research illustrates the value of using environmental data visualizations to add credibility and to facilitate interpretation within environmental communication. Alignment among disciplines, however, is limited in other attributes of environmental data visualizations such as representing temporal …

Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) and willow ptarmigan (L. lagopus) are Arctic birds with a circumpolar distribution but there is limited knowledge about their status and trends across their circumpolar distribution. Here, we compiled information from 90 ptarmigan study sites from 7 Arctic countries, where almost half of the sites are still monitored. Rock ptarmigan showed an overall negative trend on Iceland and Greenland, while Svalbard and Newfoundland had positive trends, and no significant trends in Alaska. For willow ptarmigan, there was a negative trend in mid-Sweden and eastern Russia, while northern Fennoscandia, North America and Newfoundland had no significant trends. …
