Diversity And Richness Of Non Vascular Epiphytes On Strangler Figs: Effects Of Elevation On Emergent Trees, June 2019, Kimberlie M. Sullivan Jun 2019

Diversity And Richness Of Non Vascular Epiphytes On Strangler Figs: Effects Of Elevation On Emergent Trees, June 2019, Kimberlie M. Sullivan

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The Monteverde cloud forest is characterized by its high precipitation levels, frequency of cloud immersion, and extraction of cloud water, but global climate models indicate a reduction in low level cloudiness, suggesting cloud forests may soon be replaced by forests that occur at lower altitudes. Studies found that non- vascular epiphytes are very sensitive to changes in moisture and temperature, resulting in a substantial deterioration in health, such as reduced growth rates, water holding capacity, and ability to fix nitrogen, which makes non- vascular epiphytes a compelling indicator of climate change. I conducted a survey that contrasts epiphyte diversity and …

Reconstructing Coastal Sediment Budgets From Beach- And Foredune-Ridge Morphology: A Coupled Field And Modeling Approach, Daniel J. Ciarletta, Justin L. Shawler, Christopher Tenebruso, Christopher J. Hein, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba Jun 2019

Reconstructing Coastal Sediment Budgets From Beach- And Foredune-Ridge Morphology: A Coupled Field And Modeling Approach, Daniel J. Ciarletta, Justin L. Shawler, Christopher Tenebruso, Christopher J. Hein, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Preserved beach and foredune ridges may serve as proxies for coastal change, reflecting alterations in sea level, wave energy, or past sediment fluxes. In particular, time-varying shoreface sediment budgets have been inferred from the relative size of foredune ridges through application of radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating to these systems over the last decades. However, geochronological control requires extensive field investigation and analysis. Purely field-based studies might also overlook relationships between the mechanics of sediment delivery to the shoreface and foredune ridges, missing insights about sensitivity to changes in sediment budget. We therefore propose a simple geomorphic model of …

Climate Change And Forced Migration: The Special Case Of Disappearing States, Katharine S. Knight Jun 2019

Climate Change And Forced Migration: The Special Case Of Disappearing States, Katharine S. Knight

Standard Theses

Around the world, coastal areas and sinking islands are facing more frequent and intense storms, erosion, flooding, and salt-water intrusion. All of these events threaten to displace communities and the entire populations of some nations. Within countries, community displacement can present difficult problems of relocation. But in the international arena, the projected fate of displaced peoples – particularly those who live on sinking island states – is even more dire. The international community has refused to consider these displaced peoples “climate refugees,” or “refugees,” on par with others; rather, they are considered “stateless,” stripped of their nationalities and all protections. …

Dealing With Climate Change Under The National Environmental Policy Act, Arnold W. Reitze Jr. Jun 2019

Dealing With Climate Change Under The National Environmental Policy Act, Arnold W. Reitze Jr.

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was an important environmental law for several decades before climate change became an issue of concern. Beginning in the 1990s efforts began to include in NEPA’s environmental assessments and environmental impact statements both the impact of federal government actions on climate change and the impact of climate change on proposed federal actions. These efforts were encouraged by the Council on Environmental Quality. However, implementation at the agency level has been uneven. Some Federal agencies have resisted making serious efforts to incorporate climate change impacts into their decision-making process. Moreover, the courts have not been …

A Deeper Understanding Of The Minima Caste Function Of The Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes), June 2019, Crystal Ramirez Jun 2019

A Deeper Understanding Of The Minima Caste Function Of The Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes), June 2019, Crystal Ramirez

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Leafcutter ants Atta cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), common to Central and South America, have a profound caste system to ensure the cultivation of a special fungus, Leucocoprinus gongylophorus, which is their main food source. Within the caste system, the workers job is to forage and carry back pieces of leaves that are necessary for fungus farming. The minima have long been thought to be protecting the worker ants from parasitic phorid flies (Diptera: Phoridae), who have been studied to await near the entrance of the nest to land on a leaf and lay eggs on the head of the worker ant. …

Modifying Succession: A History Of Vegetation Alliances On Swanton Pacific Ranch, Jill Wilson O'Connor Jun 2019

Modifying Succession: A History Of Vegetation Alliances On Swanton Pacific Ranch, Jill Wilson O'Connor

Master's Theses

This thesis conducts historical research into Swanton Pacific Ranch in the County of Santa Cruz, an interdisciplinary facility for education and research managed by Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The study seeks to determine whether there have been discernable changes in vegetation alliances (communities), spatially or in type, within a 110-acre Study Area from the early twentieth century to the present day and how the changes compare with other similar historical analyses in California. Historical farming and ranching uses of the area are researched, and two family case studies are presented as paradigms of potential changes …

Writing About Wolves: Using Ecocomposition Pedagogy To Teach Social Justice In A Theme-Based Composition Course, Michael S. Geary Jun 2019

Writing About Wolves: Using Ecocomposition Pedagogy To Teach Social Justice In A Theme-Based Composition Course, Michael S. Geary

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Elements of ecocomposition are employed to construct a course that uses the relationship between wolves and humans as a social justice metaphor. Students explore how mythmaking leads to dire consequences for any population being exploited. This approach to teaching first year composition allows students to acquire new knowledge about conservationism while focusing on developing their critical reading, writing, and researching skills.

© 2019 by the authors. The Southern Ocean receives limited liquid surface water input from the Antarctic continent. It has been speculated, however, that significant liquid water may flow from beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and that this subglacial flow carries that water along with dissolved nutrients to the coast. The delivery of solutes, particularly limiting nutrients like bioavailable iron, to the Southern Ocean may contribute to ecosystem processes including primary productivity. Using a helicopter-borne time domain electromagnetic survey along the coastal margins of the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, we detected subsurface connections between inland …

Aesthetic Perception Of Urban Spaces: New York, Timur Pozhidaev Jun 2019

Aesthetic Perception Of Urban Spaces: New York, Timur Pozhidaev

Theses and Dissertations

Aesthetic perception is an important field of interest in many aspects of everyday human life. It affects individual and social unconscious behavior and is strongly related to the decision-making processes in the human mind. The current study can serve as an important prototype for planning purposes and social and environmental justice among the regional units of New York City. With the current scientific sphere lacking a comprehensive methodology for assessing social superstructure, an aesthetic framework has the potential for success in evaluating the aspects of sustainable and resilient urban development.
