The Punch-Drunk Boxer And The Battered Wife: Gender And Brain Injury Research., Stephen T Casper, Kelly O'Donnell Nov 2019

The Punch-Drunk Boxer And The Battered Wife: Gender And Brain Injury Research., Stephen T Casper, Kelly O'Donnell

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This essay uses gender as a category of historical and sociological analysis to situate two populations-boxers and victims of domestic violence-in context and explain the temporal and ontological discrepancies between them as potential brain injury patients. In boxing, the question of brain injury and its sequelae were analyzed from 1928 on, often on profoundly somatic grounds. With domestic violence, in contrast, the question of brain injury and its sequelae appear to have been first examined only after 1990. Symptoms prior to that period were often cast as functional in specific psychiatric and psychological nomenclatures. We examine this chronological and epistemological …

Geosciences Faculty Publications

International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 352 recovered sedimentary‐volcaniclastic successions and extensional structures (faults and extensional veins) that allow the reconstruction of the Izu‐Bonin forearc tectonic evolution using a combination of shipboard core data, seismic reflection images, and calcite vein microstructure analysis. The oldest recorded biostratigraphic ages within fault‐bounded sedimentary basins (Late Eocene to Early Oligocene) imply a ~15 Ma hiatus between the formation of the igneous basement (52 to 50 Ma) and the onset of sedimentation. At the upslope sites (U1439 and U1442) extension led to the formation of asymmetric basins reflecting regional stretch of ~16–19% at strain rates of …

Online Mapping Tools For Geolocating Amish Settlements, Andrew Wilson, Brian Lonabocker, Megan Zagorski Nov 2019

Online Mapping Tools For Geolocating Amish Settlements, Andrew Wilson, Brian Lonabocker, Megan Zagorski

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

This technical note demonstrates the value of using online mapping tools as a method of geolocating Amish settlements. Primarily using freely available Bing and Google maps and published lists of the addresses of Amish ministers, we geolocated 1,362 Amish households in Ohio and 1,203 in Pennsylvania, representing about 10% of Amish households in those states. From these data we were able to derive a population density map of the Amish across Ohio and Pennsylvania. We caution that our map is merely a model and based on several assumptions, but the product is a finer resolution map of Amish distribution than …

Approximate Bayes Estimators Of The Inverted Kumarswamy Distribution Parameters Based On Progressive Type-Ii Censoring Scheme, A. Rashad, M. Yusuf, Sara Moheb Nov 2019

Approximate Bayes Estimators Of The Inverted Kumarswamy Distribution Parameters Based On Progressive Type-Ii Censoring Scheme, A. Rashad, M. Yusuf, Sara Moheb

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The purpose of this study is to estimate unknown parameters, reliability, the hazard rate, and the reversed hazard rate function of the inverted Kumaraswamy distribution based on progressively type-II censoring samples. Maximum likelihood estimators are obtained. The Bayesian estimation is studied under quadratic (squared error) and general entropy loss functions using Lindley’s approximation.Non-informative prior distributions are used for the parameters. Based on a Monte Carlo simulation study, the statistical performances of Bayes estimators based on quadratic and general entropy loss functions are compared between various estimates.

Effects Of Photopollution On Circadian Activity Rhythms, Aaron Schimer, Ting Liu, Elyse A. Bolterstein, Seth Magle, Caleb Gallemore, Elisabeth Dinello Nov 2019

Effects Of Photopollution On Circadian Activity Rhythms, Aaron Schimer, Ting Liu, Elyse A. Bolterstein, Seth Magle, Caleb Gallemore, Elisabeth Dinello

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Many aspects of organismal behavior and metabolism are modulated by biological clocks that oscillate with 24-hour (circadian) rhythms. These circadian clocks synchronize to environmental cues, such as cycles of light and dark, and allow organisms to anticipate changing environmental conditions and make use of temporal niches. The circadian clocks’ function, as well as the biological processes they modulate, can be altered by excess artificial lighting (photopollution). Photopollution levels in Chicago are some of the highest in the world, making it an ideal location to investigate the ecological and health impacts of nighttime light. While photopollution’s effects on specific species (e.g. …

Gis And Cartography Supporting Neiu, Erick Howenstine

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Geographers study place and location and these are critical to the success of an institution like ours with a (mainly) commuting student body. Our employees also often travel long distances to campus, and our 80,000 alumni are dispersed around the world but mainly still reside in the Chicago region. Many classes use the City and surrounding areas for field trips, internships and more. Our satellite campuses – El Centro, CCICS, Lake County College – add an additional dimension to our spatial challenges and opportunities. Underlying all this is a mosaic of neighborhoods, distinct socioeconomic and demographic areas, dense transportation infrastructure, …

Decolonizing The Barrio: The Spatial Politics Of Culture In Chicago’S Paseo Boricua, Dennis Grammenos Nov 2019

Decolonizing The Barrio: The Spatial Politics Of Culture In Chicago’S Paseo Boricua, Dennis Grammenos

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

In the current neoliberal climate that has stoked an intense intercity competition for internationally footloose capital, many cities with global aspirations are encouraging urban redevelopment projects that brand and promote heterogeneous cultural enclaves as destinations for leisure and tourism consumption. Oftentimes, such enclaves emerge as "ethnoscapes" that ostensibly express the cultural identity of its residents, usually immigrant populations. In Chicago, municipal policies aimed at enhancing a visitor economy have been instrumental in the creation of the Paseo Boricua, a Puerto Rican "ethnoscape". This study examines the intersection of Chicago's urban redevelopment policies and the spatial politics of culture that unfold …

City Of Norfolk Underground Storage Tank Analysis, Jake Hall Nov 2019

City Of Norfolk Underground Storage Tank Analysis, Jake Hall

Student Posters: GIS Day

According to The Norfolk Environmental Commission, the City of Norfolk may contain thousands of abandoned Underground Storage Tanks (USTs), most often used for storing petroleum at filling stations or for fuel oils (such as kerosene) for homes and businesses, which represent a hazard to the City of Norfolk and its surrounding environment (Norfolk Environmental Commission , 2018)....

The focus of this project is to create a database of USTs, maps to more easily track tank locations, provide analysis of areas where leaks are more likely to occur and the possible environmental concerns surrounding those areas, and create a web map …

Publications and Research

Residential land is expanding in the United States, and lawn now covers more area than the country’s leading irrigated crop by area. Given that lawns are widespread across diverse climatic regions and there is rising concern about the environmental impacts associated with their management, there is a clear need to understand the geographic variation, drivers, and outcomes of common yard care practices. We hypothesized that 1) income, age, and the number of neighbors known by name will be positively associated with the odds of having irrigated, fertilized, or applied pesticides in the last year, 2) irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide application …

Remote sensing can advance the work of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program through monitoring of satellite-derived terrestrial and marine physical and ecological variables. Standardized data facilitate an unbiased comparison across variables and environments. Using MODIS standard products of land surface temperature, percent snow-covered area, NDVI, EVI, phenology, burned area, marine chlorophyll, CDOM, sea surface temperature, and marine primary productivity, significant trends were observed in almost all variables between 2000 and 2017. Analysis of seasonal data revealed significant breakpoints in temporal trends. Within the terrestrial environment, data showed significant increasing trends in land surface temperature and NDVI. In the marine environment, …

Governance And Status Of New Mexico's Rural Drinking Water Systems, Tucker Colvin Nov 2019

Governance And Status Of New Mexico's Rural Drinking Water Systems, Tucker Colvin

Shared Knowledge Conference

This research project examines aspects of rural drinking water systems across New Mexico, specifically how they are governed, who manages them, and what their needs and concerns are. For the qualitative portion of this mixed methods project, I interview managers of rural drinking water systems to get their perspective on current issues and to learn how their systems are managed. For the quantitative portion, I look at the spatial distribution of different characteristics of drinking water systems using data from the New Mexico Environment Department and US Census. I especially look at the distribution of their organizational structures and how …

Classifying Livestock Grazing Behavior And Gis-Modeling Potential Cumulative Risks From Exposure To Abandoned Uranium Mine Waste In The Cove Wash Watershed, Arizona, Usa, Zhuoming Liu

Shared Knowledge Conference

Abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) are sources of metals and radioactive substances that are harmful to human health. There are 50 AUMs in the Cove Wash Watershed; as a result, community members are concerned that when domesticated sheep, goat and cattle graze on or near these features they are exposed to harmful substances. Sheep in particular are culturally important and consumption of meat and organs may result in human exposure and potential health impacts. As part of a larger ongoing research project, this thesis examines the geospatial and temporal grazing patterns of domesticated livestock to use GIS to model potential for …
