Using Laban’S Efforts To Define Movement In Five Music Genres, Ashley Ames

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to assist in understanding the impact music has on movement. This researcher evaluated music’s impact on movement by looking at the movement performed by nine female dancers in grades six through eight. This movement was performed to five different genres of music commonly found in five different types of dance classes and was measured in Laban’s eight efforts. There were two research instruments used in this study: A researcher survey yielding quantitative data and a participant survey producing qualitative data. The data suggested that there is a difference in how the body responds in …

Effectiveness Of Teaching About Preventing And Detecting Complications Of Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease At My Phuoc Hospital, Ha Thi Kim Phung

Master's Theses

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious illness that affects millions of people, especially children under five years of age. The social impact of severe HFMD to the health community, family members, and children is also of big concern. In the south of Vietnam, Binh Duong province is located in the area affected by HFMD. Unfortunately, caregivers have little knowledge to prevent and detect HFMD severity in children. The research question asked how effective teaching about HFMD was to improve knowledge of caregivers for detecting HFMD severity in children under five years of age at My Phuoc Hospital …

Schooling And Civic Behavior: A Global Perspective, Ian Kingsbury Dec 2019

Schooling And Civic Behavior: A Global Perspective, Ian Kingsbury

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

National governments confront different challenges to the goal of creating model citizens, as well as different ambitions in the type of citizen that they wish to create. The United States government faces a tension in determining the role of education in shaping the social order. As a liberal democracy that extols the virtue of individual liberty, the United States should allow educational pluralism to flourish. Paradoxically, however, a nation of immigrants might require an education system that turns students into “proper Americans” who honor the precepts of liberty, equality, and self-government. I draw from domestic and international studies to inform …

Finding And Analyzing De Novo Mutations In The Exomes Of Parent-Offspring Trios Of Spontaneous Chiari Malformation Type 1 Patients, Brian Leon Ricardo

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chiari Malformation Type 1 (CM1) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs when one of the cerebellar tonsils herniates past the foramen magnum causing headaches, motor or sensory deficits, sleep apnea, and difficulty swallowing. This disorder is estimated to affect 1% of the population but due to the need of neuroimaging for diagnosis and the presence of asymptomatic patients there is still uncertainty about the exact proportion of the population affected. CM1 often presents itself with other neurodevelopmental disorders such as syringomyelia, scoliosis, and known genetic syndromes such as Klippel-Feil and Marfan syndromes. Twin, family, and familial clustering studies have established …

Processing Speed For Action And Semantic Memory, Tyler A. Surber Dec 2019

Processing Speed For Action And Semantic Memory, Tyler A. Surber

Master's Theses

Previous research suggests that the processing of affordances may require more perceptually relevant information than words can provide (Surber et al., 2018; Chainay & Humphreys, 2002). The present study investigates this hypothesis with the shoebox task used in Bowers and Turner (2003). A list of 81 object nouns (targets) and associated features (primes: affordance, semantic, and non-associates) was compiled from the McRae, Cree, Seidenberg, and McNorgan (2005) norms. Affordances denote possibilities for action in relation to the object (e.g. chair – sit), whereas semantic features indicate definitional characteristics (e.g. chair – has legs). Affordances and semantic features served as primes …

Expanding The Fear Of Loss Of Vigilance Theory: Using Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Responsibility For Harm, And Fear Of Sleep To Predict Nocturnal Panic Attacks, Nicole S. Smith Dec 2019

Expanding The Fear Of Loss Of Vigilance Theory: Using Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Responsibility For Harm, And Fear Of Sleep To Predict Nocturnal Panic Attacks, Nicole S. Smith

Master's Theses

Nocturnal panic involves experiencing panic attacks out of a sleeping state without obvious causes such as nightmares or loud noises. Roughly half of patients with panic disorder will experience nocturnal panic in addition to panic attacks while awake, or daytime panic. Like daytime panic, nocturnal panic also occurs in other disorders such as PTSD. The Fear of Loss of Vigilance theory is currently the only model available to explain nocturnal panic. It suggests that nocturnal panickers fear states in which they cannot easily react to or protect themselves from danger. Prior research using a self-report measure to differentiate nocturnal and …

Is The Written Component Of Tootling Effective? A Comparison Of The Group Contingency To A Comparison Writing Procedure, James Derieux Dec 2019

Is The Written Component Of Tootling Effective? A Comparison Of The Group Contingency To A Comparison Writing Procedure, James Derieux

Master's Theses

Previous tootling literature has demonstrated positive effects of the intervention when implemented in settings from elementary school (e.g., Skinner, Cashwell, & Skinner, 2000) to high school (e.g., Lum et al., 2019). Several studies have shown meaningful effects for the tootling intervention on increasing class-wide academically engaged behavior (AEB) and decreasing disruptive behaviors (DB) (e.g., Cihak et al., 2009). However, no studies in the current literature have examined the effects of the individual components of the tootling intervention on class-wide behaviors. The current study sought to examine the effects of the written component of the tootling intervention on class-wide levels of …

Learning To Self-Train For Semi-Supervised Few-Shot Classification, Xinzhe Li, Qianru Sun, Yaoyao Liu, Shibao Zheng, Qin Zhou, Tat-Seng Chua, Bernt Schiele Dec 2019

Learning To Self-Train For Semi-Supervised Few-Shot Classification, Xinzhe Li, Qianru Sun, Yaoyao Liu, Shibao Zheng, Qin Zhou, Tat-Seng Chua, Bernt Schiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot classification (FSC) is challenging due to the scarcity of labeled training data (e.g. only one labeled data point per class). Meta-learning has shown to achieve promising results by learning to initialize a classification model for FSC. In this paper we propose a novel semi-supervised meta-learning method called learning to self-train (LST) that leverages unlabeled data and specifically meta-learns how to cherry-pick and label such unsupervised data to further improve performance. To this end, we train the LST model through a large number of semi-supervised few-shot tasks. On each task, we train a few-shot model to predict pseudo labels for …

Finding Needles In A Haystack: Leveraging Co-Change Dependencies To Recommend Refactorings, Marcos César De Oliveira, Davi Freitas, Rodrigo Bonifacio, Gustavo Pinto, David Lo Dec 2019

Finding Needles In A Haystack: Leveraging Co-Change Dependencies To Recommend Refactorings, Marcos César De Oliveira, Davi Freitas, Rodrigo Bonifacio, Gustavo Pinto, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A fine-grained co-change dependency arises when two fine-grained source-code entities, e.g., a method, change frequently together. This kind of dependency is relevant when considering remodularization efforts (e.g., to keep methods that change together in the same class). However, existing approaches forrecommending refactorings that change software decomposition (such as a move method) do not explorethe use of fine-grained co-change dependencies. In this paper we present a novel approach for recommending move method and move field refactorings, which removes co-change dependencies and evolutionary smells, a particular type of dependency that arise when fine-grained entities that belong to different classes frequently change together. First …

An Empirical Study Of Sms One-Time Password Authentication In Android Apps, Siqi Ma, Runhan Feng, Juanru Li, Yang Liu, Surya Nepal, Elisa Bertino, Robert H. Deng, Zhuo Ma, Sanjay Jha

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A great quantity of user passwords nowadays has been leaked through security breaches of user accounts. To enhance the security of the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) in such circumstance, Android app developers often implement a complementary One-Time Password (OTP) authentication by utilizing the short message service (SMS). Unfortunately, SMS is not specially designed as a secure service and thus an SMS One-Time Password is vulnerable to many attacks. To check whether a wide variety of currently used SMS OTP authentication protocols in Android apps are properly implemented, this paper presents an empirical study against them. We first derive a set …

Do My Students Understand? Automated Identification Of Doubts From Informal Reflections, Siaw Ling Lo, Kar Way Tan, Eng Lieh Ouh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditionally teaching is usually one directional where the instructor imparts knowledge and there is minimal interaction between learners and instructor. With the focus on learner-centred pedagogy, it can be a challenge to provide timely and relevant guidance to individual learners according to their levels of understanding. One of the options available is to collect reflections from learners after each lesson to extract relevant and high-value feedback so that doubts or questions can be addressed in a timely manner. In this paper, we derived an approach to automate the identification of doubts from the informal reflections through features analysis and machine …

Long-Term Index Fund Ownership And Stock Returns, Ekkehart Boehmer, Wanshan Song, Ashish Tiwari, Zhe Zhang Dec 2019

Long-Term Index Fund Ownership And Stock Returns, Ekkehart Boehmer, Wanshan Song, Ashish Tiwari, Zhe Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine the implications of stock ownership by index funds for shareholder value. Consistent with recent findings that stock ownership by passive funds contributes to improved governance, we document a strong positive relation between the duration of passive fund holdings and subsequent stock performance. This positive relation is more pronounced for firms with recent poor performance, and for smaller firms and firms with higher allocation weights in passive funds’ portfolios. Our results support the view that index funds, although passive in their investment decisions, successfully contribute to long-term value creation by actively engaging with firms on matters of governance.

Gms: Grid-Based Motion Statistics For Fast, Ultra-Robust Feature Correspondence, Jia-Wang Bian, Wen-Yan Lin, Yun Liu, Le Zhang, Sai-Kit Yeung, Ming-Ming Cheng, Ian Reid

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Feature matching aims at generating correspondences across images, which is widely used in many computer vision tasks. Although considerable progress has been made on feature descriptors and fast matching for initial correspondence hypotheses, selecting good ones from them is still challenging and critical to the overall performance. More importantly, existing methods often take a long computational time, limiting their use in real-time applications. This paper attempts to separate true correspondences from false ones at high speed. We term the proposed method (GMS) grid-based motion Statistics, which incorporates the smoothness constraint into a statistic framework for separation and uses a grid-based …

Quantum Consensus, Jorden Seet, Paul Griffin Dec 2019

Quantum Consensus, Jorden Seet, Paul Griffin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel consensus mechanism utilizing the quantum properties of qubits. This move from classical computing to quantum computing is shown to theoretically enhance the scalability and speed of distributed consensus as well as improve security and be a potential solution for the problem of blockchain interoperability. Using this method may circumvent the common problem known as the Blockchain Trilemma, enhancing scalability and speed without sacrificing de-centralization or byzantine fault tolerance. Consensus speed and scalability is shown by removing the need for multicast responses and exploiting quantum properties to ensure that only a single multicast is …

An Analysis Of The Effects Between Prison Documentaries And Popularity Among Viewers, Dominique Malone Dec 2019

An Analysis Of The Effects Between Prison Documentaries And Popularity Among Viewers, Dominique Malone

Honors Theses

This research examines the themes between a variety of prison documentaries and the subsequent viewership. In recent years, documentaries depicting prison life have risen in popularity due to a number of factors such as violence, drama, hysteria, and an overall sense of fascination (Cecil, 2009). This popularity may have impacted views on the current criminal justice system considering most people never have contact with the criminal justice system in their lifetimes (Cecil, 2009). Therefore, these documentaries may serve as one of the only bases for information that they may have about the system (Cecil, 2009). Because prison documentaries are fulfilling …

Feminine Agency And Masculine Authority: Women's Quest For Autonomy In Monastic Life, Kathryn Temple-Council Dec 2019

Feminine Agency And Masculine Authority: Women's Quest For Autonomy In Monastic Life, Kathryn Temple-Council

Honors Theses

From the earliest days of the Christian church women eagerly sought to pursue a life of devotion to Jesus Christ. This led to the foundation of women’s monastic communities, also known as convents. The path to a life in holy orders within the male dominated church was fraught with challenges to women’s authority to be the authors of their own religious experiences. Women were defined by early church fathers including Tertullian, Ambrose, and Jerome as lesser human beings than their male counterparts, inheritors of the sin of Eve and led by their inherent sexual deviance and demonic susceptibility. It is …

Help-Seeking For Cognitive Impairment By The Patient : The Role Of Self-Compassion., Allison J. Midden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Older adults represent one of the fastest growing population groups with estimates predicting global growth from 617 million in 2015 to 1.6 billion in 2050. As the aged population increases, incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias will also increase. Professionals agree that early intervention is essential for therapeutic and quality of life purposes. However, many older adults wait several months or years to seek medical help after first noticing signs of cognitive impairment. The present study seeks to identify the predictors of help-seeking for cognitive impairment by an individual for him/herself and the role that self-compassion may play …

Methods Of Instruction For English As A Second Language: The Impact Of English As A Second Language Program Models On English Language Learners’ English Proficiency, Emily Elizabeth Casaletto

University Honors Program Senior Projects

The broad diversity of students learning English as a second language (ESL) has led to inadequate ESL programs among elementary, middle, and high school students in public school systems in the United States. Examined in the paper are the three main types of ESL instruction methods: English-only immersion, bilingual English, and sheltered English instruction. While there has been ample research on the various ESL programs, there has not been as much research on exactly how these programs affect the development of English for both ELL students who are born in the United States and those who immigrated to the United …
