Development Of Semiochemical-Based Strategies For The Management Of Antestia Bug, Antestiopsis Thunbergii (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), Teresiah Nyambura Njihia

All PhD Dissertations

Antestia bug Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin) is a key insect pest of Arabica coffee associated with high losses in terms of quality, yield and export market of produce from the African region. Although the pest prefer feeding on unripe (mature) green berries than other coffee berry maturity stages or coffee parts, the cues that influence their host choice are unknown. In addition, A. thunbergii is gregarious in the field and produces a strong distinct smell while disturbed, which is characteristic of defence and alarm pheromones. However, little is known about the identity of the volatile chemical compounds that this pest produces …

Discrimination Of Hypotrigona Species (Apidae: Meliponinae) In Kenya Using Nest Architecture, Cephalic Secretions And Molecular Tools, Nelly Njeri Ndungu

All PhD Dissertations

Stingless bees are important pollinators contributing significantly to biodiversity and food security. Stingless bees produce honey that has high medicinal value that fetches higher prices compared to the honey produced by honey bees (Apis mellifera). However, identification and classification of Afrotropical stingless bees, which is key and important for their domestication, still remains ambiguous and solely reliant on the use of morphological features. In this study, an integrative taxonomy approach was applied to identify and differentiate three Hypotrigona species: Hypotrigona gribodoi, H.ruspolii and H. araujoi that are found in Kenya. Nesting sites, nest architecture, morphometrics, DNA barcoding and hemotaxonomy using whole head …

Effects Of The Invasive Asian Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, On New England Trophic Cascade: Diet And Predation, Madison Bradley Jan 2019

Effects Of The Invasive Asian Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Sanguineus, On New England Trophic Cascade: Diet And Predation, Madison Bradley

Writing Across the Curriculum

Trophic cascades occur when the community structure is influenced by indirect effects of predation on the lower trophic levels. The trophic cascade can be disrupted when an invasive species is introduced. The Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus has invaded ecosystems in New England and we predict this invasion will negatively affect the classic New England trophic cascade. By the predation indirectly affecting lower trophic levels, H. sanguineus can influence the community structure and diversity at the lower levels. To understand the trophic cascade, we manipulated the food source and competitors in four different mini-ecosystems. By introducing H. sanguineus into an …

Site index (SI) estimation for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations is important for the successful management of this important commercial tree species in the West Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States. This study evaluated various SI models for intensively managed loblolly plantations in the West Gulf Coastal Plain using data collected from permanent plots installed in intensively managed loblolly pine plantations across east Texas and western Louisiana. Six commonly used SI models (Cieszewski GADA model, both Chapman-Richards ADA and GADA models, both Schumacher ADA and GADA models, and McDill-Amateis GADA model) were fit to the data and compared. …

Implications Of Channel Catfish Movement In An Internationally Managed System, Henry Hansen Jan 2019

Implications Of Channel Catfish Movement In An Internationally Managed System, Henry Hansen

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The large-scale movements and spatial behavior of channel catfish in the Red River of the North, have direct interactions with geopolitics, anthropogenic structures, and ecosystems. Investigating the spatial dynamics and exploitation of this mobile and internationally managed fish species provides opportunities for resource managers to design evidence-based policy for the diverse interest groups that utilize the fishery. My thesis comprised two parts: 1) characterize systemwide movement and survival patterns using mark-recapture methods and acoustic telemetry and 2) project the interaction of hypothetical exploitation scenarios and alternative movement methodologies to assess the fishery from an ecosystem service flow perspective. Channel catfish …

Monitoring Spatial And Temporal Variabilities Of Gross Primary Production Using Maiac Modis Data, Marcos Fernandez-Martinez, Rong Yu, John Gamon, Gabriel Hmimina, Iolanda Filella, Manuela Balzarolo, Benjamin Stocker, Josep Penuelas

Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies: Publications

Remotely sensed vegetation indices (RSVIs) can be used to efficiently estimate terrestrial primary productivity across space and time. Terrestrial productivity, however, has many facets (e.g., spatial and temporal variability, including seasonality, interannual variability, and trends), and different vegetation indices may not be equally good at predicting them. Their accuracy in monitoring productivity has been mostly tested in single-ecosystem studies, but their performance in different ecosystems distributed over large areas still needs to be fully explored. To fill this gap, we identified the facets of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) that could be monitored using RSVIs. We compared the temporal and …

Estimating The Use Of Public Lands: Integrated Modeling Of Open Populations With Convolution Likelihood Ecological Abundance Regression, Lutz F. Gruber, Erica F. Stuber, Joseph J. Fontaine Jan 2019

Estimating The Use Of Public Lands: Integrated Modeling Of Open Populations With Convolution Likelihood Ecological Abundance Regression, Lutz F. Gruber, Erica F. Stuber, Joseph J. Fontaine

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We present an integrated open population model where the population dynamics are defined by a differential equation, and the related statistical model utilizes a Poisson binomial convolution likelihood. Key advantages of the proposed approach over existing open population models include the flexibility to predict related, but unobserved quantities such as total immigration or emigration over a specified time period, and more computationally efficient posterior simulation by elimination of the need to explicitly simulate latent immigration and emigration. The viability of the proposed method is shown in an in-depth analysis of outdoor recreation participation on public lands, where the surveyed populations …

Sustainability Literacy In French Literature And Film: From Solitary Reveries To Treks Across Deserts, Annette Sampon-Nicolas Jan 2019

Sustainability Literacy In French Literature And Film: From Solitary Reveries To Treks Across Deserts, Annette Sampon-Nicolas

French Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the imperative to embrace a new model of education that will engage students in learning about the interconnectedness of our multi species world, sustainability, and global solidarity -- the belief "that unity of humankind can be established on the basis of some basic or core human values" (Korab-Karpowicz 305). Foreign language courses -- in particular advanced-level offerings that address literacy, critical thinking, and cultural comparisons -- are ideal settings for educating for sustainability literacy. Such literacy is essential to our collective twenty-first-century global identity, but it requires transformative educational practices. As we design foreign language courses, we …

Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial Jan 2019

Comparative Effects Of Acute Low And High-Toxin Red Tide (Karenia Brevis Wilson) Exposure On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin) Feeding Response, Daniel Collins Niedospial

Theses & ETDs

Red Tide causes extensive ecological and economic damage through massive marine deaths, water quality shifts and human illness. A contributor to the health of coastal ecosystems and economies, it’s important to understand how the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin) responds to red tide and its toxins. Studies on the chronic effects of Karenia brevis exposure on bivalve mollusks are increasing, but few have explored its short-term effects on Eastern Oyster feeding response. In this study, Eastern Oysters were fed Tetraselmis impellucida and Isochrysis galbana, starved for 48 hours, and exposed to Karenia brevis Low-Toxin and High-Toxin Wilson in a static …

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns Jan 2019

Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the field of ecocriticism, tracing its conceptualization as a subgenre of literary critique and discussing its implications for the community of scholars and environmental activists. I explore commonly cited definitions of the field and examine ecocritics’ works. I also discuss the importance of the ecocritical approach and its value to the field of environmental study and activism. I advocate for the importance of the humanities to work in environmental studies, a perspective often missing in my experience from research related to the ecological crisis. Ecocritics do far more than contribute critiques of specific pieces of literature, but …

Dynamics Of Outcrossing, Selfing, And Inbreeding Depression In Conjunction With Species Rarity In Polygala Lewtonii, An Endangered Florida Scrub Endemic, Elena Meyer Jan 2019

Dynamics Of Outcrossing, Selfing, And Inbreeding Depression In Conjunction With Species Rarity In Polygala Lewtonii, An Endangered Florida Scrub Endemic, Elena Meyer

Theses & ETDs

Polygala lewtonii is an endemic, endangered Florida native with a highly fragmented population, and low levels of genetic diversity. In this thesis, I aim to improve our understanding of the mating system of P. lewtonii, and how the dynamics of that mating system are impacted by species rarity. In doing this, I will be working with a combination of both ecological and genetic data. First, I will be using ecological data from a genotyped population of P. lewtonii to assess if there is an observable differential in fitness between individuals of P. lewtonii based on their levels of genetic diversity …

Floristic Quality Assessments Of Remnant Natural Areas In The Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan Region: Evaluating Botanical Change Since The 1890s, Alan W. Stockdale, Garrett Crow, David P. Warners

Faculty and Professional Research

In 1901, Emma J. Cole, a beloved high school teacher and distinguished botanist, published Grand Rapids Flora. Cole’s floristic inventory remains the most comprehensive botanical study of the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan region, even though this area has experienced significant land- scape alterations since her publication. To address this knowledge gap, in 2014 we embarked on a multiple-year project aimed to discover and reassess the sites Cole described, as well as to catalog other natural remnant locations within the Grand Rapids area. This paper reports botanical invento- ries that were completed at eight sites within Kent County during 2015 and …

Fifty Years Of Cave Arthropod Sampling: Techniques And Best Practices, J. Judson Wynne, Francis G. Howarth, Stefan Sommer Jan 2019

Fifty Years Of Cave Arthropod Sampling: Techniques And Best Practices, J. Judson Wynne, Francis G. Howarth, Stefan Sommer

KIP Articles

Ever-increasing human pressures on cave biodiversity have amplified the need for systematic, repeatable, and intensive surveys of cave-dwelling arthropods to formulate evidence-based management decisions. We examined 110 papers (from 1967 to 2018) to: (i) understand how cave-dwelling invertebrates have been sampled; (ii) provide a summary of techniques most commonly applied and appropriateness of these techniques, and; (iii) make recommendations for sampling design improvement. Of the studies reviewed, over half (56) were biological inventories, 43 ecologically focused, seven were techniques papers, and four were conservation studies. Nearly one-half (48) of the papers applied systematic techniques. Few papers (24) provided enough information …

Five-Year Response Of Spontaneous Vegetation To Removal Of Invasive Amur Bush Honeysuckle Along An Urban Creek, Rebecca W. Dolan, Kelly H. Brown Jan 2019

Five-Year Response Of Spontaneous Vegetation To Removal Of Invasive Amur Bush Honeysuckle Along An Urban Creek, Rebecca W. Dolan, Kelly H. Brown

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Non-native invasive species have major impacts on landscapes worldwide, but their effects in urban areas are not well documented. We quantified the response of naturally regenerating vegetation along an urban creek to removal of the invasive shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur Bush Honeysuckle). Over the 5-year study, species richness more than doubled. Most new plants were native, disturbance-adapted, early successional species. Trend analysis of function traits revealed annuals that rely on seed dispersal by wind or externally on animals were significantly overrepresented among new plants in comparison to their proportion in the countywide species pool. Increased species richness did not result …

A Systemic Approach To The Development And Improvement Of Trauma Education And Training, Yoon Suh Moh Jan 2019

A Systemic Approach To The Development And Improvement Of Trauma Education And Training, Yoon Suh Moh

Counseling and Behavioral Health Faculty Papers

A number of individuals are exposed to adversity (e.g., child abuse and neglect, parental substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration) early in life (Felitti et al., 1998; Centers for Disease Control [CDC] and Prevention, 2019). Moreover, over 70% of individuals worldwide will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives (Benjet et al., 2016). Mounting research has documented that the effects of trauma exposure in childhood are not only immediate but also enduring, leading to lifelong health problems. At the same time, studies have suggested that there is a lack of systemic trauma education and training. This article will …

The Trichoptera Of Panama X. The Quebrada Rambala Drainage, With Description Of 19 New Species Of Microcaddisflies (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae), Steven C. Harris, Brian J. Armitage

Insecta Mundi

The Quebrada Rambala drainage is found immediately south and south-southeast of the town of Chiriqui Grande and east of Rambala on the Caribbean coast. It is one of two tributaries of the Rio Margarita watershed, a small, lowland drainage with elevations up to 180 m. During the 2014-2017 period, collections of caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera), employing both UV-light and Malaise traps, were made at two locations on Quebrada Rambala proper, and four locations on its unnamed tributary, all on a land area of approximately 1 ha. As a result, 127 species of caddisflies were identified, including 59 species of microcaddisflies. A …

Comparing The Fertility Of Florida’S Eastern Mosquitofish, Gambusia Holbrooki, Based On Differences In Female Traits, Water Quality, And Habitat Type, Jordan David Miller

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki, is a surface-dwelling guppy native to the southeastern United States. While resilient to poor water quality, the fish is a voracious predator of the epilimnion, with established populations in most subtropical/tropical regions with surficial freshwater. Eastern mosquitofish are farmed and collected for use as biocontrol agents against the spread of many infectious, often life-threatening, mosquito-borne illnesses. I compared the reproductive success (fertility) of 370 gravid mosquitofish among 32 sites across central Florida to test the hypothesis that fertility is influenced by maternal, ecological, and environmental factors. I found that fish fertility (clutch size) differed significantly …

A Survey And Comparison Of Plant Communities In Crescent Lake Park, An Urban Lake In St. Petersburg, Florida, Hunter Hajaistron

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

In Florida, urban lakes are challenged. Pollution from surrounding urban ecosystems is detrimental to the ecological health of these lakes. Planting and restoring native wetlands along the littoral zone of these lakes will reduce the effects of pollution. Crescent Lake is an urban lake in Pinellas County, Florida, USA, that has recently begun to restore its wetlands system. This study surveys and evaluates the plant species in the wetland, shoreline, and parkland habitats of Crescent Lake to determine the effectiveness of management. Transects and quadrats were used to determine the diversity and structure of native and non-native plant species. 58 …

Size Estimation Of Pre‐Columbian Caribbean Fish, Sandrine Grouard, Sophia Perdikaris, Nídia Cristina Espíndola Rodrigues, Irvy R. Quitmyer

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

In this contribution, we present a methodological approach to the identification of pre‐Columbian Caribbean fisheries and examine the interrelationships of exploitation according to size for eight fish families, in a diachronic perspective for the Lesser Antilles. Based on the principles of size and growth allometries, biometric repositories have been reconstructed for modern families that represent different ecological environments: Holocentridae, Serranidae, Carangidae, Lutjanidae, Haemulidae, Scaridae, Acanthuridae, and Scombridae. The measured fish bone elements were selected based on their robustness and potential for recovery at archaeological sites. This resulted in a sample size totaling 563 modern osteological specimens, which provided reconstructed standard, …
