Influence Of Ligand Complexation On Nickel Toxicity, Speciation And Bioavailability In Marine Waters, Samantha Sherman Jan 2019

Influence Of Ligand Complexation On Nickel Toxicity, Speciation And Bioavailability In Marine Waters, Samantha Sherman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Currently there are no site-specific bioavailability-based prediction models for assessing the impacts of nickel (Ni) in marine environments although there are indications that these may be warranted. The aim of this research was to characterize the complexation of Ni in relation to toxicity and speciation. Various complexing ligands were used, and it was predicted that the binding affinity (logKf) of ligands would be inversely correlated to toxicity based on dissolved Ni concentrations ([NiD]) but that on a free ion concentration ([Ni2+]) basis, toxicity would not vary. A two-phased approach was used; the first was a proof of principle where synthetic …

The Facilitators And Barriers For Active Seniors Attending Physiotherapy, Derek Wood Jan 2019

The Facilitators And Barriers For Active Seniors Attending Physiotherapy, Derek Wood

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who can be utilized by the senior population to maintain or improve their health (CPA, 2012). This research examined the experiences of physically active, injured seniors receiving treatment from a physiotherapist in order to understand the barriers and facilitators to treatment and recovery. The study also examined this population’s experiences with physiotherapy (PT) as well as their physical activity (PA) levels and the effect PA had on them.

The study employed a qualitative design which used background questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for data collection. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was used to analyze the …

Cosmic Ray Sensors For The Continuous Measurement Of Arctic Snow Accumulation And Melt, Anton Jitnikovitch Jan 2019

Cosmic Ray Sensors For The Continuous Measurement Of Arctic Snow Accumulation And Melt, Anton Jitnikovitch

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the Arctic, winter persists for much of the year, resulting in a hydrological system that is primarily regulated by snow and snowmelt runoff, and has important implications on vegetation, animals, and on the thermal regime of the active layer and permafrost. Snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements such as remote sensing techniques provide coarse resolution data, while snow surveys and snow-pits are labour intensive, have limited spatial coverage and do not provide a continuous reading. Over the last few decades, cosmic ray sensors (CRS) have been proposed as a way to provide much improved snow data, but few studies have …

Aligning Best Practices In Student Success And Career Preparedness: An Exploratory Study To Establish Pathways To Stem Careers For Undergraduate Minority Students, Kimberly D. Kendricks, Anthony A. Arment, K. V. Nedunuri, Cadance A. Lowell Jan 2019

Lowell

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Undergraduate minority retention and graduation rates in STEM disciplines is a nationally recognized challenge for workforce growth and diversification. The Benjamin Banneker Scholars Program (BBSP) was a five-year undergraduate study developed to increase minority student retention and graduation rates at an HBCU. The program structure utilized a family model as a vehicle to orient students to the demands of college. Program activities integrated best K-12 practices and workforce skillsets to increase academic preparedness and career readiness. Findings revealed that a familial atmosphere improved academic performance, increased undergraduate research, and generated positive perceptions of faculty mentoring. Retention rates among BBSP participants …

Planned Behavior Typologies Of Agricultural Education Teacher Educators Regarding Service Learning As A Method Of Instruction: A National Mixed Methods Study, Richie Roberts, M. Craig Edwards, Toni A. Ivey Jan 2019

Planned Behavior Typologies Of Agricultural Education Teacher Educators Regarding Service Learning As A Method Of Instruction: A National Mixed Methods Study, Richie Roberts, M. Craig Edwards, Toni A. Ivey

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

This study sought to understand the service-learning beliefs and intentions of agricultural education teacher educators. We collected quantitative data through a web-based survey instrument and course syllabi. Variables yielding statistically significant relationships were analyzed using cluster analysis, which produced three unique clusters operationalized as typologies representing the planned behaviors of teacher educators regarding service learning. For example, the Optimistically Unaware expressed positive beliefs about the method, but did not understand how to integrate service learning in their teaching methods courses. Meanwhile, the Policy-Focused Decision Makers used established education policy as anchors when navigating decisions, such as whether to feature service …

Contributors To Success On The Automotive Service Excellence (Ase) Student Certification Exam, Robert K. Vlacich, Mark D. Threeton, Kyungin Kim Jan 2019

Contributors To Success On The Automotive Service Excellence (Ase) Student Certification Exam, Robert K. Vlacich, Mark D. Threeton, Kyungin Kim

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

This study sought to identify which elements contribute to success on the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification exam. Students at an eastern U.S. technical college who completed all of their automotive major courses and the ASE Student Certification exam during the spring 2017 semester were selected for the study. The results of this study revealed that there was a direct correlation between performance in Physics, Algebra, and Trigonometry 1 and performance on the ASE Student Certification exam. It was also revealed that students who were required to participate in remedial math and/or remedial reading courses were likely to perform …

The Flipped Classroom And Its Impact On Student Engagement And Academic Performance In A Culinary Arts, Career And Technical Education Program, Michael Holik Jan 2019

The Flipped Classroom And Its Impact On Student Engagement And Academic Performance In A Culinary Arts, Career And Technical Education Program, Michael Holik

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

The purpose of this study was to gather evidence from a CTE culinary arts program to determine if students perform better academically and are more engaged in the flipped classroom using digital technology, than the traditional classroom. The study included 24 participants in a post-secondary, CTE culinary arts program who were divided into two groups of 12: a traditional, teacher-centered group and a flipped, student-centered group. Utilizing action-based research, surveys, journals, and an engagement matrix were created and used. Although not statistically significant, student grades in the flipped classroom were nearly 4% higher than those in the traditional classroom and …

Religion And Regulation, Reuben Guttman Jan 2019

Religion And Regulation, Reuben Guttman

Emory Business Law Review

Just ten days after his inauguration, on January 30, 2017, the President issued an Executive Order directing that 'for every new regulation issued, at least two prior regulations be identified for elimination, and that the cost of planned regulations be prudently managed and controlled through a budgeting process.' No doubt the Executive Order failed to account for the exhaustive administrative processes, and even court challenges, that typically create and temper regulation in the first place. Nor did the Executive Order account for the historical context of regulation; perhaps even a tragic event or loss of life leading to a rulemaking. …
