Background

Anomia remains one of the most recalcitrant linguistic disruptions in aphasia to treat. Developing successful interventions to address the word-finding deficits are complicated by the post-stroke symptom variability and inconsistent recovery patterns associated with anomia. Most of the current treatment methods, with a focus on specific compensating techniques and the repetitive practice of a limited set of items, have had variable success in naming treatment. However, it has not been possible to predict the gains in generalizing the learning beyond the stimuli used in practice or the controlled clinical setting. In this preliminary case study, we explore the value …

A Hybrid Cognitive Architecture With Primal Affect And Physiology, Christopher L. Dancy Jan 2019

A Hybrid Cognitive Architecture With Primal Affect And Physiology, Christopher L. Dancy

Faculty Journal Articles

Though computational cognitive architectures have been used to study several processes associated with human behavior, the study of integration of affect and emotion in these processes has been relatively sparse. Theory from affective science and affective neuroscience can be used to systematically integrate affect into cognitive architectures, particularly in areas where cognitive system behavior is known to be associated with physiological structure and behavior. I introduce a unified theory and model of human behavior that integrates physiology and primal affect with cognitive processes in a cognitive architecture. This new architecture gives a more tractable, mechanistic way to simulate affect-cognition interactions …

The Top 500 Mathematics Pins: Analysis Of Elementary Mathematics Activities On Pinterest, A G. Sawyer, Lara Dick, E J. Shapiro, T A. Wismer Jan 2019

The Top 500 Mathematics Pins: Analysis Of Elementary Mathematics Activities On Pinterest, A G. Sawyer, Lara Dick, E J. Shapiro, T A. Wismer

Faculty Journal Articles

A 2017 study found that 87% of elementary teachers reported consulting Pinterest when planning mathematical lessons (Hertel & Wessman-Enzinger, 2017). When searching for resources on Pinterest, preservice teachers identified looking at the number of pins to determine their quality (Sawyer & Meyers, 2018). This leaves teacher educators wondering, what is the quality of materials that preservice and inservice teachers are finding on Pinterest? We conducted a document analysis on the top 500 elementary mathematics pins found on Pinterest to determine what kinds of elementary mathematics materials are available, what mathematics topics are represented, the level of cognitive demand of the …

Pardon Me Please: Cyntoia Brown And The Justice System’S Contempt For The Rights Of Black People, Danielle Wingfield

Law Faculty Publications

"The outcry that precipitated Cyntoia Brown’s pending release on August 7, 2019 is a resonating reverberation of the voices of counter-resistance, which continue to echo in the halls of American injustice. From the social media platforms for social justice to the chambers of the Supreme Court, the pleas for pardon are nothing new. Pardon me for driving, pardon me for walking home from the store, pardon me for walking in the street with friends, pardon me for playing with toys—all while Black. While you’re at it, excuse me for wanting the right to equal education. As a matter of fact, …

Presidential Responses To Protest: Lessons Jefferson Davis Never Learned, Ashlee A. Paxton-Turner Jan 2019

Presidential Responses To Protest: Lessons Jefferson Davis Never Learned, Ashlee A. Paxton-Turner

Law Faculty Publications

In 1865, the Confederacy fell. This is not a secret. In April 1865, in the Virginia village of Appomattox Court House, Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, signed the terms of surrender, thus triggering the beginning of the end of the American Civil War. As writer and historian Fletcher Pratt describes the scene, after signing the terms of surrender, Lee “clasped hands with [Union General, Ulysses S. Grant], stepped to the door and rode out of history.” But neither Lee nor the Civil War has ridden out of history. Indeed, a deep fascination with the American Civil War persists. Well over …

The Fourth Circuit, "Suem" And Reverse Veil Piercing In Delaware, David G. Epstein, Jake Weiss Jan 2019

The Fourth Circuit, "Suem" And Reverse Veil Piercing In Delaware, David G. Epstein, Jake Weiss

Law Faculty Publications

"In Sky Cable v. DIRECTV, Inc., the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit answered two narrow questions of first impression regarding the equitable remedy of reverse veil piercing in Delaware. Sky Cable provides an affirmative answer to a question of whether Delaware would recognize reverse veil piercing and a negative answer to a question of whether Delaware's charging statute for limited liability companies precludes reverse veil piercing for a judgment creditor of an LLC member. In this Article, we suggest that Delaware courts might answer reverse veil piercing questions differently, based on equitable maxims and language in …

The Popular Constitutional Canon, Thomas G. Donnelly Jan 2019

The Popular Constitutional Canon, Thomas G. Donnelly

Law Faculty Publications

Popular constitutionalism scholarship has often left out the American people. Sure, ordinary citizens make cameo appearances—often through the actions of elected officials and elite movement leaders. However, focusing on high politics among elite actors—even if those actors are not judges—simply is not enough. If popular constitutional views do, indeed, matter, then we can expect constitutional partisans to try to manipulate the processes through which these views emerge. Some constitutional scholars have made a start, reflecting on the importance of the constitutional canon. However, these scholars focus mostly on the legal canon and often ignore its popular analog. At the same …

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher Jan 2019

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher

Faculty Journal Articles

To date, several fMRI studies reveal activation in motor planning areas during musical auditory imagery. We addressed whether such activations may give rise to peripheral motor activity, termed subvocalization or covert singing, using surface electromyography. sensors placed on extrinsic laryngeal muscles, facial muscles, and a control site on the bicep measured muscle activity during auditory imagery that preceded singing, as well as during the completion of a visual imagery task. Greater activation was found in laryngeal and lip muscles for auditory than for visual imagery tasks, whereas no differences across tasks were found for other sensors. Furthermore, less accurate singers …

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of The Habenula In Mood Disorder Patients With And Without Suicide-Related Behaviors, Elisa Ambrosi, David B Arciniegas, Kaylah N Curtis, Michelle A Patriquin, Gianfranco Spalletta, Gabriele Sani, B Christopher Frueh, J Christopher Fowler, Alok Madan, Ramiro Salas Jan 2019

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of The Habenula In Mood Disorder Patients With And Without Suicide-Related Behaviors, Elisa Ambrosi, David B Arciniegas, Kaylah N Curtis, Michelle A Patriquin, Gianfranco Spalletta, Gabriele Sani, B Christopher Frueh, J Christopher Fowler, Alok Madan, Ramiro Salas

Staff and Researcher Publications

The habenula is a small midbrain structure that is important for brain signaling and learning from negative events. Thus, the habenula is strongly connected to both the reward system and motor regions. Increasing evidence suggests a role for the habenula in the etiology of psychiatric disorders, including mood and substance use disorders. However, no studies to date have investigated habenular resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in suicide-related behaviors (SB). The authors enrolled 123 individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder and a history of suicide-related behaviors (SB+), 74 individuals with MDD or bipolar disorder and a history of suicidal …

Quantum Metalanguage And The New Cognitive Synthesis, Alexey V. Melkikh, Andrei Khrennikov, Roman V. Yampolskiy Jan 2019

Quantum Metalanguage And The New Cognitive Synthesis, Alexey V. Melkikh, Andrei Khrennikov, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Problems with mechanisms of thinking and cognition in many ways remain unresolved. Why are a priori inferences possible? Why can a human understand but a computer cannot? It has been shown that when creating new concepts, generalization is contradictory in the sense that to be created concepts must exist a priori, and therefore, they are not new. The process of knowledge acquisition is also contradictory, as it inevitably involves recognition, which can be realized only when there is an a priori standard. Known approaches of the framework of artificial intelligence (in particular, Bayesian) do not determine the origins of knowledge, …

Can A Precast Pit Latrine Concrete Floor Withstand Emptying Operations? An Investigation From Malawi., Joshua Mchenga, Rochelle H. Holm Jan 2019

Can A Precast Pit Latrine Concrete Floor Withstand Emptying Operations? An Investigation From Malawi., Joshua Mchenga, Rochelle H. Holm

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

For fecal sludge from households in low- and middle-income countries to be treated offsite it needs to be removed, which can be greatly affected by the pit latrine floor design. However, it is unclear whether precast pit latrine concrete floors (latrine slabs) can withstand emptiers and their equipment. To investigate this issue, 28 prefabricated latrine slabs were purchased in two cities of Malawi. They were first visually evaluated, and then their compression strength was tested. Additionally, each seller was asked a series of questions to better understand their business, training, and construction practices. Results showed that households should perform due …

The Role Of The Midfoot In Drop Landings, Mark T. Olsen, Dustin A. Bruening, A. Wayne Johnson, Sarah T. Ridge Jan 2019

The Role Of The Midfoot In Drop Landings, Mark T. Olsen, Dustin A. Bruening, A. Wayne Johnson, Sarah T. Ridge

Faculty Publications

Purpose: The midfoot is instrumental to foot function; however, quantifying its roles in human movement has been difficult. A forceful dynamic activity like landing may help elucidate the midfoot’s contribution to foot energetics and function. The main purpose of this study was to measure midtarsal joint kinematics and kinetics during a barefoot single-leg landing task. A secondary aim of this study was to explore the relationship between static foot posture and dynamic midfoot function.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study design, 48 females (age = 20.4 ± 1.8 yr, body mass index = 21.6 ± 1.7 kg/m) performed drop landings from …

Teaching The Scriptural Emphasis On The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ, John Hilton Iii Jan 2019

Teaching The Scriptural Emphasis On The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ, John Hilton Iii

Faculty Publications

A colleague recently shared with me how, when teaching missionary preparation classes, he would role-play with students. When students pretending to be missionaries would ask him (acting as an investigator) if he knew about Christ’s Atonement, he would say, “Yes, I saw that Mel Gibson movie about Christ dying for our sins on the cross.” At least half of his students would correct him, stating that Christ atoned for our sins in Gethsemane, but not on the cross. This not only indicates a lack of the interpersonal skill of building on common beliefs but is also doctrinally incomplete. It also …
