Neural Correlates Of Weighted Reward Prediction Error During Reinforcement Learning Classify Response To Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In Depression, Filippo Queirazza, Elsa Fouragnan, J. Douglas Steele, Jonathan Cavanagh, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for major depressive disorder, only up to 45% of depressed patients will respond to it. At present, there is no clinically viable neuroimaging predictor of CBT response. Notably, the lack of a mechanistic understanding of treatment response has hindered identification of predictive biomarkers. To obtain mechanistically meaningful fMRI predictors of CBT response, we capitalize on pretreatment neural activity encoding a weighted reward prediction error (RPE), which is implicated in the acquisition and processing of feedback information during probabilistic learning. Using a conventional mass-univariate fMRI analysis, we demonstrate that, at the group …

Social Evaluation Of Faces Across Gender And Familiarity, Mila Mileva, Robin S.S. Kramer, A. Mike Burton Jan 2019

Social Evaluation Of Faces Across Gender And Familiarity, Mila Mileva, Robin S.S. Kramer, A. Mike Burton

School of Psychology

Models of social evaluation aim to capture the information people use to form first impressions of unfamiliar others. However, little is currently known about the relationship between perceived traits across gender. In Study 1, we asked viewers to provide ratings of key social dimensions (dominance, trustworthiness, etc.) for multiple images of 40 unfamiliar identities. We observed clear sex differences in the perception of dominance—with negative evaluations of high dominance in unfamiliar females but not males. In Study 2, we used the social evaluation context to investigate the key predictions about the importance of pictorial information in familiar and unfamiliar face …

Mine Or Mother’S? Exploring The Self-Ownership Effect Across Cultures, M Golubickis, Nsp Ho, Jk Falbén, Km Mackenzie, A Boschetti, Wa Cunningham, Macrae C Neil Jan 2019

Mine Or Mother’S? Exploring The Self-Ownership Effect Across Cultures, M Golubickis, Nsp Ho, Jk Falbén, Km Mackenzie, A Boschetti, Wa Cunningham, Macrae C Neil

School of Psychology

In exploring self-biases in cognition and decision-making, recent research has demonstrated cultural variation in the emergence of the self-ownership effect in memory. Whereas Westerners display enhanced memory for items owned by the self (vs. mother), this effect is reversed among Asian participants. Developing this line of inquiry, here we considered whether cultural influences on ownership extend to other outcomes—specifically, the efficiency of object categorization. In two experiments, Western and Asian participants were required to report if previously assigned items (i.e., pencils and pens) were owned-by-self or owned-by-mother. Results revealed a self-prioritization effect for participants from both cultures, such that responses …

Do Psychological Factors Relate To Energy Saving Behaviours In Inefficient And Damp Homes? A Study Among English Social Housing Residents, C Boomsma, Rv Jones, S Pahl, A Fuertes Jan 2019

Do Psychological Factors Relate To Energy Saving Behaviours In Inefficient And Damp Homes? A Study Among English Social Housing Residents, C Boomsma, Rv Jones, S Pahl, A Fuertes

School of Psychology

Social housing residents are vulnerable to rising energy costs. Reductions in energy use through behaviour change may be part of the solution but require an insight into the factors that relate to energy saving behaviour in this context. This paper responds to recent calls for an integrated approach to studying energy saving behaviours, investigating psychological (i.e. attitudes; perceived behavioural control; subjective norms), contextual (i.e. dwelling energy efficiency; problems with condensation, damp and mould), and socio-demographic factors (i.e. gender; age) together. Data was collected using a cross-sectional survey among social housing residents in South-West England. Dwelling characteristics were not found to …

Two- And Three-Year-Olds Consider Ownership When Selecting And Allocating Resources, M Petrowski, Patricia Kanngiesser, Ori Friedman Jan 2019

Two- And Three-Year-Olds Consider Ownership When Selecting And Allocating Resources, M Petrowski, Patricia Kanngiesser, Ori Friedman

School of Psychology

In three experiments, we investigated whether 2- and 3-year-olds (N = 240) consider ownership when taking resources for themselves and allocating resources to another agent. When selecting resources for themselves, children generally avoided taking resources that belonged to another agent and instead favored their own resources (Experiments 1 and 2). However, they did not avoid taking the agent’s resources when the only other resources available were described as not belonging to the agent (Experiment 3). Children also selected fewer of the agent’s resources when taking for themselves than when giving to the agent (Experiments 2 and 3). In giving to …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background: Natalizumab is an effective treatment for relapsing multiple sclerosis. Return of disease activity upon natalizumab discontinuance creates the need for follow-up therapeutic strategies.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of teriflunomide following natalizumab discontinuance in relapsing multiple sclerosis patients.

Methods: Clinically stable relapsing multiple sclerosis patients completing 12 or more consecutive months of natalizumab, testing positive for anti-John Cunningham virus antibody, started teriflunomide 14 mg/day, 28 ± 7 days after their final natalizumab infusion. Physical examination, Expanded Disability Status Scale, laboratory assessments, and brain magnetic resonance imaging were performed at screening and multiple follow-up visits.

Results: Fifty-five patients were enrolled …

Neural repair after stroke involves initiation of a cellular proliferative program in the form of angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and molecular growth signals in the surrounding tissue elements. This cellular environment constitutes a niche in which regeneration of new blood vessels and new neurons leads to partial tissue repair after stroke. Cancer metastasis has similar proliferative cellular events in the brain and other organs. Do cancer and CNS tissue repair share similar cellular processes? In this study, we identify a novel role of the regenerative neurovascular niche induced by stroke in promoting brain melanoma metastasis through enhancing cellular interactions with surrounding niche …

Effect Of Phenylephrine On Static And Dynamic Accommodation, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, F Lara, P Bernal-Molina, R Riquelme-Nicolás, Et Al Jan 2019

Effect Of Phenylephrine On Static And Dynamic Accommodation, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, F Lara, P Bernal-Molina, R Riquelme-Nicolás, Et Al

School of Health Professions

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that changes in accommodation after instillation of Phenylephrine Hydrochloride (PHCl) observed in some studies could be caused by changes in optics. METHODS: We performed two experiments to test the effects of PHCl on static and on dynamic accommodation in 8 and 6 subjects, respectively. Objective wavefront measurements were recorded of the static accommodation response to a stimulus at different distances or dynamic accommodation response to a sinusoidally moving stimulus (between 1 and 3 D of accommodative demand at 0.2Hz). The responses were characterized using two methods: one that takes into account the mydriatic optical effects …
