Global Carceral Feminism And Domestic Violence: What The West Can Learn From Reconciliation In Uganda, Aparna Polavarapu Jan 2019

Global Carceral Feminism And Domestic Violence: What The West Can Learn From Reconciliation In Uganda, Aparna Polavarapu

Scholarly Works

Around the world, policies and laws emphasizing criminal justice have dominated domestic violence interventions for decades. In the United States, certain feminist advocates worked with state actors to develop a primarily criminal justice response to domestic violence. Western influence in the international human rights movement has spread this approach around the world, leading it to become the key means of addressing violence against women. However, critics argue that the overreliance on the criminal justice system is a key failure of the anti-domestic-violence movement, with some referring to the strain of feminism promoting prosecution as "carceral feminism. " The carceral approach …

Considering Reconsidering Judicial Independence, Charles G. Geyh Jan 2019

Considering Reconsidering Judicial Independence, Charles G. Geyh

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In Reconsidering Judicial Independence, Professor Stephen Burbank revisits the nature of the relationship between judicial independence and judicial accountability—a relationship that he has elucidated over the course of an illustrious career. As Burbank emphasizes, the continuing success of this dichotomy depends on preserving a balance between its halves. But forces generations in the making have led to a new assault on the independence of the judiciary in the age of Trump, which has put the future of the independence–accountability balance in doubt. The age-old rule-of-law paradigm, which posits that independent judges put aside their personal biases and follow the law, …

Dirty Thinking About Law And Democracy In Rucho V. Common Cause, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Guy-Uriel E. Charles Jan 2019

Dirty Thinking About Law And Democracy In Rucho V. Common Cause, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Guy-Uriel E. Charles

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In order to understand the division in Rucho and, as importantly, to understand why the plaintiffs in Rucho failed to win over the conservatives on the Court, we have to come to terms with these different worldviews on the Court. Is sordid politics an inherently necessary and arguably normatively good part of the political process, and thus a necessary part of our representative institutions? Relatedly, do substantive fairness principles exist—outside of race and the equal-population principle—that constrain political actors when they design electoral structures to favor themselves at the expense of their opponents? We take up these questions in the …

Court Personnel Attitudes Towards Medication-Assisted Treatment: A Statewide Survey, Barbara Andraka-Christou, Meghan Gabriel, Jody L. Madeira, Rod D. Silverman Jan 2019

Court Personnel Attitudes Towards Medication-Assisted Treatment: A Statewide Survey, Barbara Andraka-Christou, Meghan Gabriel, Jody L. Madeira, Rod D. Silverman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Background: Despite its efficacy, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is rarely available in the criminal justice system in the United States, including in problem-solving courts or diversionary settings. Previous studies have demonstrated criminal justice administrators' hostility towards MAT, especially in prisons and jails. Yet, few studies have examined attitudes among court personnel or compared beliefs among different types of personnel. Also, few studies have explored the relationship between MAT education/training and attitudes. Finally, few studies have directly compared attitudes towards methadone, oral buprenorphine, and extended-release naltrexone in the criminal justice system.

Methods: We modified a survey by Matusow et al. (2013) to …

Harm, Sex, And Consequences, India Thusi Jan 2019

Harm, Sex, And Consequences, India Thusi

Articles by Maurer Faculty

At a moment in history when this country incarcerates far too many people, criminal legal theory should set forth a framework for reexamining the current logic of the criminal legal system. This Article is the first to argue that “distributive consequentialism,” which centers the experiences of directly impacted communities, can address the harms of mass incarceration and mass criminalization. Distributive consequentialism is a framework for assessing whether criminalization is justified. It focuses on the outcomes of criminalization rather than relying on indeterminate moral judgments about blameworthiness, or “desert,” which are often infected by the judgers’ own implicit biases. Distributive consequentialism …

Technologically Distorted Conceptions Of Punishment, Jessica M. Eaglin Jan 2019

Technologically Distorted Conceptions Of Punishment, Jessica M. Eaglin

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Much recent work in academic literature and policy discussions suggests that the proliferation of actuarial — meaning statistical — assessments of a defendant’s recidivism risk in state sentencing structures is problematic. Yet scholars and policymakers focus on changes in technology over time while ignoring the effects of these tools on society. This Article shifts the focus away from technology to society in order to reframe debates. It asserts that sentencing technologies subtly change key social concepts that shape punishment and society. These same conceptual transformations preserve problematic features of the sociohistorical phenomenon of mass incarceration. By connecting technological interventions and …

No-Reference Image Denoising Quality Assessment, Si Lu Jan 2019

No-Reference Image Denoising Quality Assessment, Si Lu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

A wide variety of image denoising methods are available now. However, the performance of a denoising algorithm often depends on individual input noisy images as well as its parameter setting. In this paper, we present a noreference image denoising quality assessment method that can be used to select for an input noisy image the right denoising algorithm with the optimal parameter setting. This is a challenging task as no ground truth is available. This paper presents a data-driven approach to learn to predict image denoising quality. Our method is based on the observation that while individual existing quality metrics and …

Joint Stabilization And Direction Of 360° Videos, Chengzhou Tang, Oliver Wang, Feng Liu, Ping Tan Jan 2019

Joint Stabilization And Direction Of 360° Videos, Chengzhou Tang, Oliver Wang, Feng Liu, Ping Tan

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Three-hundred-sixty-degree (360°) video provides an immersive experience for viewers, allowing them to freely explore the world by turning their head. However, creating high-quality 360° video content can be challenging, as viewers may miss important events by looking in the wrong direction, or they may see things that ruin the immersion, such as stitching artifacts and the film crew. We take advantage of the fact that not all directions are equally likely to be observed; most viewers are more likely to see content located at “true north,” i.e., in front of them, due to ergonomic constraints. We therefore propose 360° video …

Context-Aware Synthesis For Video Frame Interpolation, Simon Niklaus, Feng Liu Jan 2019

Context-Aware Synthesis For Video Frame Interpolation, Simon Niklaus, Feng Liu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Video frame interpolation algorithms typically estimate optical flow or its variations and then use it to guide the synthesis of an intermediate frame between two consecutive original frames. To handle challenges like occlusion, bidirectional flow between the two input frames is often estimated and used to warp and blend the input frames. However, how to effectively blend the two warped frames still remains a challenging problem. This paper presents a context-aware synthesis approach that warps not only the input frames but also their pixel-wise contextual information and uses them to interpolate a high-quality intermediate frame. Specifically, we first use a …

Inquiry Into The Correlation Between Burnout And Depression, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Jay Verkuilen, Renzo Bianchi Jan 2019

Inquiry Into The Correlation Between Burnout And Depression, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Jay Verkuilen, Renzo Bianchi

Publications and Research

The extent to which burnout refers to anything other than a depressive condition remains an object of controversy among occupational health specialists. In three studies conducted in two different countries and two different languages, we investigated the discriminant validity of burnout scales by evaluating the magnitude of the correlation between (latent) burnout and (latent) depression. In Study 1 (N = 911), burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory–General Survey’s Exhaustion subscale and depression with the depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). In Study 2 (N = 1,386), the Shirom–Melamed Burnout Measure was used to assess burnout and …

Sex Topics In Therapy: A Literature Review And Proposal For Continuing Education, Courtney Gallagher Jan 2019

Sex Topics In Therapy: A Literature Review And Proposal For Continuing Education, Courtney Gallagher

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Sex topics should be welcome in the therapy room. Sexual identity, practices, concerns and questions should not be considered a "taboo" subject in the therapy room, yet clients remain reluctant to bring up such topics with their therapists. In order to ensure that clients feel free to bring into the room such themes that are a large part of their life, clinicians need to be trained and competent in sex topics. The following literature review examines the history of femininity and masculinity and what "facts" have continued to permeate into our profession, the history of sex expectations, language about sex …

Top-Quark Pair Hadroproduction In Association With A Heavy Boson At Nlo+Nnll Including Ew Corrections, Alessandro Broggio, Andrea Ferroglia, Rikkert Frederix, Davide Pagani, Benjamin D. Pecjak, Ioannis Tsinikos

Publications and Research

This work studies the associated production of a top-quark pair with a W, Z, or Higgs boson at the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections as well as for several differential distributions of the massive particles in the final state are provided. These predictions, valid for the LHC operating at 13 TeV, include without any approximation all the NLO electroweak and QCD contributions of O(αisαj+1) with i + j = 2, 3. In addition, the predictions presented here improve upon the NLO QCD results by adding the effects of soft gluon emission …

Measuring The Weizsäcker-Williams Distribution Of Linearly Polarized Gluons At An Electron-Ion Collider Through Dijet Azimuthal Asymmetries, Adrian Dumitru, Vladimir Skokov, Thomas Ullrich Jan 2019

Measuring The Weizsäcker-Williams Distribution Of Linearly Polarized Gluons At An Electron-Ion Collider Through Dijet Azimuthal Asymmetries, Adrian Dumitru, Vladimir Skokov, Thomas Ullrich

Publications and Research

The production of a hard dijet with small transverse momentum imbalance in semi-inclusive DIS probes the conventional and linearly polarized Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distributions. The latter, in particular, gives rise to an azimuthal dependence of the dijet cross section. In this paper we analyze the feasibility of a measurement of these TMDs through dijet production in DIS on a nucleus at an electron-ion collider. We introduce the MCDIJET Monte Carlo generator to sample quark-antiquark dijet configurations based on leading-order parton level cross sections with WW gluon distributions that solve the nonlinear small-x QCD evolution equations. …

Optimal Inventory Strategy Under Risk: A Contingent Claims Approach, Jesse Daniel Klebe Jan 2019

Optimal Inventory Strategy Under Risk: A Contingent Claims Approach, Jesse Daniel Klebe

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Inventory management in the agriculture industry involves many sources of risk in terms of demand uncertainty as well as uncertain margins. Divulging an optimal inventory strategy can prove cumbersome to logistics managers. In this thesis, inventory is viewed as a real option on the ability to operate. Contingent claims inventory (CCI) analysis, paired with stochastic binomial real option valuation, provides a model which values the real option embedded in holding inventory and iterates the purchasing strategy until expected profit is maximized. This framework is applied to three industry cases pertaining to: wheat flour milling, fertilizer merchandising, and bulk shipments via …

The Effects Of Futures Markets On The Spot Price Volatility Of Storable Commodities, Cole Louis Goetz Jan 2019

The Effects Of Futures Markets On The Spot Price Volatility Of Storable Commodities, Cole Louis Goetz

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This thesis examines the relationship between spot prices, futures prices, and ending stocks for storable commodities. We used Granger causality and DAGs to determine causal relationships and cointegration tests to determine long-run relationships. We use VAR/VECM and consider innovation accounting techniques to see how volatility in one market affects the price behavior and volatility in the other market. Results suggest that for agricultural commodities, innovations in futures price permanently increase the level of spot prices while accounting for much of spot price variance over time. For national oil, shocks to futures price decrease the level of spot price in the …

This study’s findings are generally consistent with similar research conducted in the past.

Understanding The Equine Distal Limb, Mattia Gunkelman Jan 2019

Understanding The Equine Distal Limb, Mattia Gunkelman

Animal Sciences

Studies examining health of the distal limb and lameness conditions are important for education and future research. It is hypothesized that changes to the external hoof would result in alterations to blood flow throughout the distal limb and changes to digital cushion thickness. To investigate these things, the following experiments (exp) were conducted. Exp 1: MRI images of the equine distal limb. All images had identified abnormalities to internal structures, and a lameness score assigned. Digital cushion thickness was measured, however no relationship of thickness and lameness was observed (P≥0.12). Exp 2: Trimming and shoeing is a routine procedure for …

Advanced Evapotranspiration Measurement For Crop Water Management In The Red River Valley, Ali Rashid Niaghi Jan 2019

Advanced Evapotranspiration Measurement For Crop Water Management In The Red River Valley, Ali Rashid Niaghi

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

As the main component of terrestrial energy and water balance, evapotranspiration (ET) moves a large amount of water and energy in the form of latent heat flux from bare soil and vegetated surfaces into the atmosphere. Despite the development of many methods and equations through past decades, accurate ET estimation is still a challenging task, especially for the Red River Valley of the North (RRV) that has limited updated information on ET either for landscape or agricultural water management. The overall objective of first study was to evaluate the ASCE-EWRI reference ET (ETo) method by developing an accurate crop coefficient …

Biological Abnormalities In The Ruminant Small Intestine And Its Relationship To Carbohydrate Assimilation, Ronald Trotta Jan 2019

Biological Abnormalities In The Ruminant Small Intestine And Its Relationship To Carbohydrate Assimilation, Ronald Trotta

Animal Sciences

Several biological abnormalities exist between the ruminant and nonruminant small intestine and influences carbohydrate assimilation. Two experiments were conducted to identify potential mechanisms to improve carbohydrate utilization in cattle. Experiment 1 evaluated the effects of duodenal starch infusions with casein or glutamic acid on post-ruminal carbohydrase activities. Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of dietary fructose on visceral organ development and expression of nutrient transporters and digestive enzymes involved in carbohydrate assimilation. In experiment 1, the results suggest that small intestinal starch digestion may be improved in cattle with increased small intestinal flow of casein through increases in post-ruminal carbohydrase activities. …

Effects Of Replacing Supplemental Sucrose With Beef During Mid To Late Gestation On Maternal Health And Fetal Growth And Development Using A Sow Biomedical Model, Megan Alice Nelson Jan 2019

Effects Of Replacing Supplemental Sucrose With Beef During Mid To Late Gestation On Maternal Health And Fetal Growth And Development Using A Sow Biomedical Model, Megan Alice Nelson
