A Computational Method For Predicting Functional Effects Of Cancer-Related Genetic Sequence Variants, Bofei None Wang Jan 2019

A Computational Method For Predicting Functional Effects Of Cancer-Related Genetic Sequence Variants, Bofei None Wang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Rapid advances in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies provide many oppor- tunities to identify associations between genetic sequence variants (GSV) and diseases, which may lead to better clinical diagnosis and treatments. OncoMiner is a bioinformatics pipeline developed at UTEP (OncoMiner.utep.edu) for mining NGS data. It can identify exonic sequence variants, link them with associated literatures, visualize genomic locations and compare their occurrence frequencies among dierent groups. However, the current version of OncoMiner is limited to accepting only a specic input le format provided by the Otogenetics NGS Lab Services. The main objectives of my current work are (1) to de- …

Information Content Of Revised Earnings Forecasts, Market Learning, And Analyst Behavior, Lifei Xue Jan 2019

Information Content Of Revised Earnings Forecasts, Market Learning, And Analyst Behavior, Lifei Xue

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In my first essay, I examine how the quality of private information and the quality of public information contained in analyst revised one-year-ahead earnings forecasts issued right after a quarterly earnings announcement affect the post-earnings announcement drift (PEAD). I find that high precision of private information contained in revised forecasts reduces the level of PEAD and that the precision of public information contained in the revised one-year-ahead earnings forecasts partially offset the reduction in PEAD. Moreover, I find the effect of precision of private information on PEAD decreases after Reg FD, which required in the year 2000 that analysts could …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Continuous Bending Under Tension Processing Of Dual Phase High Strength Automotive Steels, Camille Poulin Jan 2019

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Continuous Bending Under Tension Processing Of Dual Phase High Strength Automotive Steels, Camille Poulin

Master's Theses and Capstones

The following research explores the continuous bending under tension (CBT) incremental forming process effects on four dual phase (DP) steels: DP 590, DP 780, DP 980, DP 1180. A parameter study was conducted, finding the ideal parameters for increased elongation to fracture compared to tension of over five times for DP 1180 and DP 980. These parameters were found to be a normalized bend depth of 3.5 and a crosshead pull speed of 1.35mm/s. Using these parameters, following tests were conducted on all four steels by stopping the CBT process before fracture at 2, 4, 6, 8, and some even …

Code Revision Commission V. Public.Resource.Org And The Fight Over Copyright Protection For Annotations And Commentary, David E. Shipley

Scholarly Works

This article is about the Eleventh Circuit’s 2018 decision in Code Revision Commission v. Public.Resource.Org concerning the public edicts doctrine and holding that the State of Georgia’s copyright on the annotations, commentary and analyses in the Official Code of Georgia Annotated is invalid. About a third of the States claim copyright in the annotations to their codes so the potential impact of this decision is substantial. The U.S. Supreme Court granted Georgia’s petition for a writ of certiorari on Monday, June 24.

The article’s thesis is that the Eleventh Circuit was wrong and should be reversed. It first discusses the …

The Role Of Fault In § 1983 Municipal Liability, Michael Wells Jan 2019

The Role Of Fault In § 1983 Municipal Liability, Michael Wells

Scholarly Works

Under Monell v. Department of Social Services, local governments are not vicariously liable for constitutional violations committed by their employees. Those governments, however, are liable under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for violations committed by "policymaking" officials. In the face of these two principles, courts have struggled with cases in which an underling commits a constitutional violation and the claim of municipal liability is based on a policymaker's failure to prevent it. The government can be liable in these "indirect-effect" cases for a policymaker's "deliberate indifference" to safeguarding constitutional rights, a standard that demands an even greater showing of culpability than …

Comments on the OECD proposal were submitted by the author as part of the OECD’s public consultation process in November 2019.

Law And The Blockchain, Usha Rodrigues Jan 2019

Law And The Blockchain, Usha Rodrigues

Scholarly Works

All contracts are necessarily incomplete. The inefficiencies of bargaining over every contingency, coupled with humans’ innate bounded rationality, mean that contracts cannot anticipate and address every potential eventuality. One role of law is to fill gaps in incomplete contracts with default rules. The blockchain is a distributed ledger that allows the cryptographic recording of transactions and permits “smart” contracts that self-execute automatically if their conditions are met. Because humans code the contracts of the blockchain, gaps in these contracts will arise. Yet in the world of “smart contracting” on the blockchain, there is no place for the law to step …

Federal Guilty Pleas: Inequities, Indigence And The Rule 11 Process, Julian A. Cook

Scholarly Works

In 2017 and 2018, the Supreme Court issued two little-noticed decisions—Lee v. United States and Class v. United States. While neither case captured the attention of the national media nor generated meaningful academic commentary, both cases are well deserving of critical examination for reasons independent of the issues presented to the Court. They deserve review because of a consequential shared fact; a fact representative of a commonplace, yet largely overlooked, federal court practice that routinely disadvantages the indigent (and disproportionately minority populations), and compromises the integrity of arguably the most consequential component of the federal criminal justice process. In each …

Fragmentation, Harlan G. Cohen Jan 2019

Fragmentation, Harlan G. Cohen

Scholarly Works

A danger, an opportunity, passé, a cliché, destabilizing, empowering, destructive, creative: Depending on whom you ask, fragmentation has meant any and all of these for international law. The concept of fragmentation has been a mirror reflecting international lawyers’ perception of themselves, their field, and its prospects for the future.

This chapter chronicles fragmentation’s meanings over the past few decades. In particular, it focuses on the spreading fears of fragmentation around the millennium, how the fears were eventually repurposed, where, speculatively, those fear may have gone, and how and to what extent faith in international law was restored.

Articles

Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological disease characterised by the presence of endometrial cells in extra-uterine regions. One of the main factors impacting on the fertility of women affected by endometriosis is the poor oocyte quality. Granulosa Cells (GCs) regulate oocyte development and maintain the appropriate microenvironment for the acquisition of its competence; hence, the dysregulation of these functions in GCs can lead to severe cellular damages also in oocytes. In this study, luteinized GCs samples were separately collected from both ovaries of women affected by Unilateral Ovarian Endometriosis and analysed by infrared and Raman microspectroscopy. The spectral data were compared …

Analysis Of Bodily Fluids Using Vibrational Spectroscopy: A Direct Comparison Of Raman Scattering And Infrared Absorption Techniques For The Case Of Glucose In Blood Serum, Drishya Prachalil, Clément Bruno, Franck Bonnier, Helen Blasco, Igor Chourpa, Matthew Baker, Jennifer Mcintyre, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Analysis of biomarkers present in the blood stream can potentially deliver crucial information on patient health and indicate the presence of numerous pathologies. The potential of vibrational spectroscopic analysis of human serum for diagnostic purposes has been widely investigated and, in recent times, infrared absorption spectroscopy, coupled with ultra-filtration and multivariate analysis techniques, has attracted increasing attention, both clinical and commercial. However, such methods commonly employ a drying step, which may hinder the clinical work flow and thus hamper their clinical deployment. As an alternative, this study explores the use of Raman spectroscopy, similarly coupled with ultra-filtration and multivariate analysis …

Improved Performance Of Near Infrared Excitation Raman Spectroscopy Using Reflective Thin-Film Gold On Glass Substrates For Cytology Samples, Sinead Barton, Kevin O'Dwyer, Marion Butler, Hugh Byrne, Luke O'Neill, Bryan M. Hennelly

Articles

Confocal near-infrared Raman spectroscopy has been shown to have applications in the area of clinical biology. A source wavelength in the near infrared is preferred over visible wavelengths for inspecting biological samples due to superior wave number resolution and reduced photo damage. However, these excitation sources have a number of drawbacks when compared to lasers in the visible wavelength region, including the requirement to use expensive highly pure crystal substrates such as Raman grade calcium fluoride as well as long acquisition times due to the lower Raman scattering efficiency. This paper investigates the use of a reflective substrate comprising a …

Exploring The Effects Of Service Quality, Shipping Cost, Brand And Attitude On Consumer’S Intention To Choose Express Courier Services In E-Commerce, Wiryanta Muljono, Sri Setiyawati

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

The growth of e-commerce has highlighted the importance of express courier service (ECS). We empirically study consumer’s choice of ECS in purchasing goods online. This research aims to examine the effect of service quality (SQ), shipping cost, brand, and attitude towards customers’ intention to choose ECS on e-commerce. This research was conducted using a quantitative approach among customers who intended their goods to be shipped using ECS. Data of 100 respondents were collected and then analyzed using the structural equation model technique. We find that there is no correlation between SQ and shipping cost and the attitude towards choosing a …

Productive Response To Two Concentrate Allocation Strategies In Dairy Cows Grazing With Restricted Pasture Allowance, Gustavo Bretschneider, Eloy Salado, Alejandra Cuatrin, Juan Mattera, Mariela Pece, Dario Arias, Maira Cuffia, Virginia Dieguez Jan 2019

Productive Response To Two Concentrate Allocation Strategies In Dairy Cows Grazing With Restricted Pasture Allowance, Gustavo Bretschneider, Eloy Salado, Alejandra Cuatrin, Juan Mattera, Mariela Pece, Dario Arias, Maira Cuffia, Virginia Dieguez

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of two concentrate allotment strategies on the performance of dairy cows grazing on restricted pasture and supplemented with conserved forage. Dairy cows fed equal amounts of concentrate (fixed daily rate: 5.5 kg DM/cow) were compared to cows supplemented with concentrate according to their lactation stage as follows: 10.0, 5.0, and 1.5 kg DM/cow daily during early, mid, and late lactation, respectively (average daily dose: 5.5 kg DM/cow). There was a supplementation strategy × lactation stage interaction (P < 0.05) for energy-corrected milk (ECM). For early lactation cows, supplementation at a variable rate increased ECM yield by 14.61% (P < 0.05). There was a supplementation strategy × lactation stage interaction (P < 0.05) for body weight change. At late lactation stage, cows supplemented at a fixed rate gained weight (+ 0.16 kg/day), whereas those supplemented at a variable rate lost weight (- 0.08 kg/day; P < 0.05). No significant effect was found for body condition score. The prioritization of milk production rather than the attenuation of body reserve mobilization suggests that concentrate allowance based on lactation stage may be unsuitable for minimizing the negative energy balance in early lactation cows.

When Brain Stimulation Backfires, Sarah Beth Bell Jan 2019

When Brain Stimulation Backfires, Sarah Beth Bell

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

tDCS brain stimulation does not always work in the intended direction. It has been found to sometimes worsen behavior rather than improve it. A preliminary study shows that people high on sensation-seeking and lack of premeditation were prone to reverse effects of tDCS on performance on a Stop Signal Task. Both of these constructs are related to dopamine levels. Study 2 seeks to intentionally cause a reverse effect of tDCS by increasing participants’ dopamine levels via caffeine. There was not a significant interaction between tDCS and caffeine on errors on the Stop Signal Task in this study. However, other factors …

Analysis Of Automatic Judgments Of Religious Belief, Maxine Belén Najle Jan 2019

Analysis Of Automatic Judgments Of Religious Belief, Maxine Belén Najle

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The measurement of religious belief has some social desirability concerns that make the development of an implicit measure of religiosity advantageous. Currently, there are few options for implicitly measuring religious belief. This study attempted to add to this literature by analyzing the automatic judgements of religious belief through the use of an implicit measure known as the MouseTrack task, allowing for the measurement of latency in the expression of these beliefs as well as the certainty of these beliefs by tracking the path taken during the decision process. A sample of 121 undergraduates was recruited from the UK SONA subject …
