Untangling The Reciprocal Relation Of The Behavioral And Physiological Immune Systems, Baris Sevi Jan 2019

Untangling The Reciprocal Relation Of The Behavioral And Physiological Immune Systems, Baris Sevi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the past decade, there has been an exponential increase in the study of the Behavioral Immune System (BIS), a suite of psychological processes that serves an infectious disease avoidance function. The BIS is proposed to be inherently intertwined with the physiological immune system. However, very few studies have actually demonstrated this fundamental, theoretical assumption. The purpose of this thesis was to test the possible relation between the physiological and behavioral immune systems in two studies. In Study 1 (N = 388), the relation between implied activation of the physiological immune system and BIS sensitivity was examined. Participants who reported …

Technology-Facilitated Stalking And Unwanted Sexual Messages/Images In A College Campus Community: The Role Of Negative Peer Support, Walter D. Dekeseredy, Martin D. Schwartz, Bridget Harris, Delanie Woodlock, James Nolan, Amanda Hall-Sanchez Jan 2019

Technology-Facilitated Stalking And Unwanted Sexual Messages/Images In A College Campus Community: The Role Of Negative Peer Support, Walter D. Dekeseredy, Martin D. Schwartz, Bridget Harris, Delanie Woodlock, James Nolan, Amanda Hall-Sanchez

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Researchers have accumulated much social scientific knowledge about the scope, distribution, causes, and outcomes of the physical and sexual abuse of female students in North American institutions of higher learning. However, surveys of technology-facilitated stalking and the dissemination of unwanted sexual messages/images in college campus communities are in short supply. The few that have been conducted do not identify key sociological risk factors associated with these two electronic forms of victimization. This paper, then, has two objectives: (1) to examine the influence of two types of negative peer support and (2) to determine if being the target of technology-facilitated stalking …

Teacher Shortage As A Local Phenomenon: District Leader Sensemaking, Responses, And Implications For Policy, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Matthew P. Campbell Jan 2019

Teacher Shortage As A Local Phenomenon: District Leader Sensemaking, Responses, And Implications For Policy, Erin Mchenry-Sorber, Matthew P. Campbell

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

While the teacher shortage is a national crisis, the manifestations of the shortage are felt most acutely at the local district level. The diversity of these micro-contexts often leads to disparities in the ways local school systems are served by large-scale initiatives. District leaders provide an important lens for understanding the localized manifestation of teacher shortages. This research contributes to the existing macro-level literature on teacher shortages through investigation of the ways in which district leaders in West Virginia make sense of and respond to the teacher shortage. As part of a broader study, we share analyses of interviews with …

Mine Flooding History Of A Regional Below-Drainage Coalfield Dominated By Barrier Leakage (1970–2014), Joseph J. Donovan, Eric F. Perry Jan 2019

Mine Flooding History Of A Regional Below-Drainage Coalfield Dominated By Barrier Leakage (1970–2014), Joseph J. Donovan, Eric F. Perry

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A 44-year record of water level fluctuations in a series of adjacent closed underground mines documents the history of closure and mine flooding in the Fairmont Coalfield, one of the oldest coal mining districts in the Pittsburgh coal basin, West Virginia, USA. As closures proceeded and mines began to flood, US environmental regulations were first enacted mandating mine water control and treatment, rendering uncontrolled surface discharges unacceptable. The purpose of this study is to present this flooding history and to identify critical events that determined how mine pools evolved in this case. Also examined is the strategy developed to control …

Comparing Stakeholder Attitudes Toward White-Tailed Deer And Rare Plant Management In Canaan Valley, West Virginia, Kelley L. Flaherty, Philip J. Turk, James T. Anderson Jan 2019

Comparing Stakeholder Attitudes Toward White-Tailed Deer And Rare Plant Management In Canaan Valley, West Virginia, Kelley L. Flaherty, Philip J. Turk, James T. Anderson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Canaan Valley, West Virginia, USA provides habitat for many plants considered rare in West Virginia. The local white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimm.) are a popular attraction for visitors as well as resident and nonresident hunters. However, concerns exist over the impact of white-tailed deer herbivory on rare plant communities in the wetlands. We evaluated stakeholder attitudes regarding white-tailed deer management and rare plant conservation by mailing surveys to property owners in Canaan Valley and Tucker County, WV, and providing surveys to visitors at Canaan Valley State Park and National Wildlife Refuge. Individuals that had incurred crop damage were …

A Framework For Understanding The Role Of Psychological Processes In Disease Development, Maintenance, And Treatment: The 3p-Disease Model, Casey D. Wright, Alaina Tiani, Amber Lynn Billingsley, Shari Alaina Steinman, Kevin T. Larkin, Daniel W. Mcneil Jan 2019

A Framework For Understanding The Role Of Psychological Processes In Disease Development, Maintenance, And Treatment: The 3p-Disease Model, Casey D. Wright, Alaina Tiani, Amber Lynn Billingsley, Shari Alaina Steinman, Kevin T. Larkin, Daniel W. Mcneil

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Health psychology is multidisciplinary, with researchers, practitioners, and policy makers finding themselves needing at least some level of competency in a variety of areas from psychology to physiology, public health, and others. Given this multidisciplinary ontology, prior attempts have been made to establish a framework for understanding the role of biological, psychological, and socio-environmental constructs in disease development, maintenance, and treatment. Other models, however, do not explain how factors may interact and develop over time. The aim here was to apply and adapt the 3P model, originally developed and used in the treatment of insomnia, to couch the biopsychosocial model …

Definitions And Meaning For Future Teachers In Spatial Measurement: Length, Area, And Volume, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He Jan 2019

Definitions And Meaning For Future Teachers In Spatial Measurement: Length, Area, And Volume, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He

Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

U.S. students have consistently demonstrated poor performance in spatial reasoning in standardized testing (e.g., National Assessment of Educational Progress). One possible reason is students' lack of conceptual understanding of measurement concepts (length, area, volume, capacity). This paper describes different ways that mathematics textbooks written for future elementary teachers define meanings of measurement concepts, especially the meaning of measure, area, and the measurement process (generally and for area). We base the analysis of definitions and construction of complete definitions using several definitions of each concept from mathematics textbooks written for future elementary teachers (e.g., Beckmann, 2012; Sowder, Sowder, & Nickerson, 2010). …

Data Security Threats Sources: An Empirical Examination Of Institutional Characteristics, Nasim Talebi, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi, Suhail Chakravarty

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Driven by the difficulty in achieving complete security with technical tools, business investigators are looking into organizational and behavioral issues that could help make systems more secure. This chapter looks at the security of systems from the organizational perspective. Specifically, this study attempts to identify if different organizations have different predisposition to particular type(s) of security threat sources. Using publicly available security breach data from a privacy rights clearinghouse to investigate which organizational characteristics predisposes an institution to an external or internal threat source, it was concluded that as size of organization and the number of its valuable documents increase …
