Definitions And Meaning For Future Teachers In Spatial Measurement: Length, Area, And Volume, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He

Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

U.S. students have consistently demonstrated poor performance in spatial reasoning in standardized testing (e.g., National Assessment of Educational Progress). One possible reason is students' lack of conceptual understanding of measurement concepts (length, area, volume, capacity). This paper describes different ways that mathematics textbooks written for future elementary teachers define meanings of measurement concepts, especially the meaning of measure, area, and the measurement process (generally and for area). We base the analysis of definitions and construction of complete definitions using several definitions of each concept from mathematics textbooks written for future elementary teachers (e.g., Beckmann, 2012; Sowder, Sowder, & Nickerson, 2010). …

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

The objective of Project Message in a Bottle is to design a variable buoyancy deployment capsule capable of housing generic payloads. The capsule is designed to deploy from a submersible host vessel at a depth of 65 feet below sea level. Once deployed, the capsule will sink horizontally with about 10% negative buoyancy until it is two capsule lengths from the host vessel. It then reorients vertically and rises to the surface with positive buoyancy. Once the capsule reaches the surface, the payload can be ejected without having been in contact with the water. A primary benchmark of the capsule …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Ground Control Point Deployment, Patrick Curtis, Benjamin Lee, Eric Gardell, Jessica Russo

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

According to Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 77, all airports have imaginary approach surfaces which must remain clear of obstructions in order to ensure safe air travel. Threats of penetration to these imaginary surfaces include new construction, telephone poles and lines, and trees. While most potential threats analyzed remain relatively constant in size, objects such as trees which grow require annual analysis for change detection. A variety of methods are available for surveying these surfaces for potential obstructions, one being an aerial mapping from photogrammetric data.

Aerial mapping for surveying purposes is a process which ties overlapping photographs together using …

Equilibria And Synchrotron Stability In Two Energy Storage Rings, B. Dhital, Jean R. Delayen, Y. S. Derbenev, D. Douglas, Geoffrey A. Krafft, F. Lin, B. Morozov, Y. Zhang Jan 2019

Equilibria And Synchrotron Stability In Two Energy Storage Rings, B. Dhital, Jean R. Delayen, Y. S. Derbenev, D. Douglas, Geoffrey A. Krafft, F. Lin, B. Morozov, Y. Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications

In a dual energy storage ring, the electron beam passes through two loops at markedly different energies E_{L}, and E_{H}, i.e., energies for low energy loop and high energy loop respectively. These loops use a common beamline where a superconducting linac at first accelerates the beam from EL to EH and then decelerates the beam from EH to EL in the next pass. There are two basic solutions to the equilibrium problems possible, i.e., ’Storage Ring’ (SR) equilibrium and ’Energy Recovery Linac’ (ERL) equilibrium. SR equilibrium mode more resembles the usual single loop storage ring with strong synchrotron motion and …

This performance and transcript emerge from a collaborative journey that grapples with what it might mean to agitate dominant pedagogical and methodological conventions of Eurocentric Anglophone academia. Together, we perform an argument and a search: for multiple entry points into decolonizing feminisms; for multiple modes of knowing and being that can interrupt and challenge the epistemes that are rooted in thoughts and practices of colonialism and coloniality; for interrogating the dominant politics of citation that often operate in academic practices in disembodied ways. We search for a politics of knowing that is firmly rooted in relationalities where power and authoritycan …

The Burr X Exponentiated Weibull Model: Characterizations, Mathematical Properties And Applications To Failure And Survival Times Data, Mohamed G. Khalil, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Haitham M. Yousof

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, we introduce a new three-parameter lifetime model called the Burr X exponentiated Weibull model. The major justification for the practicality of the new lifetime model is based on the wider use of the exponentiated Weibull and Weibull models. We are motivated to propose this new lifetime model because it exhibits increasing, decreasing, bathtub, J shaped and constant hazard rates. The new lifetime model can be viewed as a mixture of the exponentiated Weibull distribution. It can also be viewed as a suitable model for fitting the right skewed, symmetric, left skewed and unimodal data. We provide a …

Incomplete Gamma Distribution: A New Two Parameter Lifetime Distribution With Survival Regression Model, Aliakbar Rasekhi, Mahdi Rasekhi, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce a new two parameter lifetime distribution constructed via incomplete gamma function which includes exponential distribution as a limiting case. This distribution is more flexible than most of the two parameter extended exponential distributions. Various statistical properties such as moments, moment generating function and certain useful characterizations based on the ratio of two truncated moments are presented. Maximum likelihood estimation method is used for estimating parameters of this distribution and a survival regression model based on the proposed distribution is presented for fitting breast cancer data set.
