Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences In Primary Care: Recommendations For Practice, Julie Ann Emerson Jan 2019

Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences In Primary Care: Recommendations For Practice, Julie Ann Emerson

Nursing

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) increase the risk of childhood injury as well as long-term negative mental and physical health outcomes. ACE are defined as potentially traumatic events occurring during childhood and adolescence that can have negative, lasting effects on health and well-being (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Childhood trauma can lead to the development of chronic diseases, mental illness, violence and being a victim of violence, as well as financial and social problems later in life. Despite the clear links between childhood trauma and chronic diseases in adulthood, there continues to be a lack of ACE screening in …

Publishing Public History: Publishing Options For Small Organizations, Angela Ann Beaton

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

Publishing books and catalogs has long been the domain of large museums and historical societies that have an equally large budget. While large organizations can commit vast amounts of time and resources to publishing, many small organizations cannot. Before recent technological advances, small museums and local history organizations were unable to participate in the publishing of books and catalogs easily. However, today, there are several viable options for these organizations to begin publishing. This research aims to highlight the ways that small organizations in the Upper Midwest have been utilizing technological advances and strategic partnerships to publish. Using these tools …

Sexual Health Perspectives Of Pastoral Adolescent Girls In Samburu County, Doreen Awino Odera Jan 2019

Sexual Health Perspectives Of Pastoral Adolescent Girls In Samburu County, Doreen Awino Odera

Sociology and Anthropology

Teenage girls from the Turkana pastoral community in Northern Kenya have varying views of sexuality. Some parents choose to send their daughters to school creating disparate levels of knowledge about their bodies and sexual health. To better evaluate these differences, girls (13-18 years) were asked to develop body maps, a methodological technique that enables verbal and visual data collection. Interviews and participant observations were also used to gather data. This research involved a total of 33 participants and included both school going and non-school going girls. Triangulation of data from Interviews, participant observation, and body mapping provided multiple angles into …

How It Meets The Eye: Altering Locus Of Control Through Environmental Data Visualization, Briana Rose Wilhelmi Jan 2019

How It Meets The Eye: Altering Locus Of Control Through Environmental Data Visualization, Briana Rose Wilhelmi

Sociology and Anthropology

Locus of control (LOC), first defined as a trait determining one’s sense of control over outcomes, continues to be refined. Originally treated as a generalized expectancy, scholars have extended its range for queries in specific domains (e.g., health, workplace, environmental behaviors), and, in more recent years, have suggested reformulating the concept as a state, based on evidence indicating its susceptibility to change. This paper builds on work suggesting a relationship between data visualization techniques and LOC by presenting the results of an experiment aiming to manipulate environmental internal LOC by varying the number of graphical elements in bar charts. Environmental …

Diabetes Self-Management Education Service At A Rural Minnesota Health Clinic, Samantha Hulst Jan 2019

Diabetes Self-Management Education Service At A Rural Minnesota Health Clinic, Samantha Hulst

Nursing

In 2015, there were an estimated 30.3 million Americans living with diabetes, and 95% of them were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017b). Patients living in rural America have an increased prevalence of diabetes, and their participation rates in preventative care practice are lower (Rutledge, Masalovich, Blacher, & Saunders, 2017). The increased prevalence of the T2D in rural communities does not positively correlate with the number of diabetes self-management education (DSME) services in these areas, which poses a gap in healthcare services (Rutledge et al., 2017). Diabetes self-management education can be defined as …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) In North Dakota. Database To Screening: Bridging The Gap Between What We Know And Where To Go, Trevor Stavig

Nursing

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause persistent deficits in social communication, behavior, and development. The effect of ASD differs from individual to individual, thus it is considered a spectrum disorder. Early screening and intervention are essential for improving outcomes. However, primary care providers’ screening rates remain low even though the diagnosis of ASD is possible in children who are 2 years old or younger. On average, children are 4 years or older at the time of diagnosis. The purpose of this project was to provide primary care providers with the tools needed to screen for …

Aspirin Use For Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Sarah Frauenberg Jan 2019

Aspirin Use For Primary Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease, Sarah Frauenberg

Nursing

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and aspirin is a well-known medication strongly associated with CVD prevention. Aspirin has undeniable benefits in the role of secondary prevention of CVD, however, the benefits are ambiguous when associated with primary prevention. The decision to start aspirin for primary prevention becomes complicated due to aspirin’s effect on coagulation and the risk of gastric ulceration. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has level B recommendations in place regarding the use of low-dose aspirin (81 mg) for primary prevention of CVD. In addition, the …

Population Structure Of Uromyces Appendiculatus In North Dakota, Cecilia Monclova-Santana

Plant Pathology

North Dakota is the lead producing state of common bean in the USA, accounting for 43% of national production. Bean rust is caused by the autoecious, macrocyclic fungus Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.:Pers.). All pathogen spores stages have been observed in North Dakota, but it is unclear how frequently sexual reproduction occurs. Traditionally, genetic resistance is the preferred management method. Sixty-seven percent of the 119 U. appendiculatus single pustule isolates collected in 2015 and 2016 were classified phenotypically as race 20-3. Virulence phenotypes of race 20-3 isolates ranged from hypersensitive to small pustules (0.2-0.3mm) on Early Gallatin, PC-50, Mexico 235, and Mexico …

Investigation Of Nutrients As Treatments Of Bacterial Biofilms, Meredith Lynn Schroeder Jan 2019

Investigation Of Nutrients As Treatments Of Bacterial Biofilms, Meredith Lynn Schroeder

Microbiological Sciences

Using nutrients bacteria utilize to grow as treatments of bacterial biofilms have been investigated. This dissertation examines the problem of the prevention and treatment of biofilms by: (i) testing the effect of the nutrient β-phenylethylamine (PEA) on growth, ATP content of biofilm, and biofilm biomass, (ii) testing the effect of ethyl acetoacetate (EAA) and other small molecules on growth, ATP content of biofilm, and biofilm biomass, and (iii) investigating three applications of PEA and EAA. PEA could be used as both, prevention and treatment for bacterial biofilms. We observed a reduction of growth, ATP content of biofilm, and biofilm biomass …

Regulating Bite Mark Evidence: Lesbian Vampires And Other Myths Of Forensic Odontology, Jennifer D. Oliva, Valena E. Beety

Faculty Scholarship

e third piece in a trilogy that examines and evaluates the standards that American co e proffered by prosecutors in criminal trials. The first two articles in the trilogy expose the criminal courts’ on-going practice of admitting false forensic evidence that is virtually always excluded in civil cases. They also advance a panoply of procedural and evidentiary solutions aimed at reforming this legally unviable discrepancy. Those solutions are court-centric insofar as they advocate for, among other things, open and early criminal discovery, pre-trial Daubert hearings to challenge evidence and experts, and court-appointment of qualified forensic science experts. This Article takes …

Discrimination Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.) And Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum Salicaria L.) Based On Field Spectral Data, Kathryn Marie Hooge Hom Jan 2019

Discrimination Of Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula L.) And Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum Salicaria L.) Based On Field Spectral Data, Kathryn Marie Hooge Hom

Natural Resources Management

Leafy spurge and purple loosestrife are noxious weeds that displace native vegetation. Herbicides are often applied to these weeds during flowering, making it ideal to identify them early in the season. This paper evaluates the spectral separability of the inflorescences and leaves of these plants from surrounding vegetation. Spectral data of leafy spurge, purple loosestrife, and surrounding vegetation were collected from sites in southeastern North Dakota. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to separate the spectral signatures of these weeds in the visible and near infrared wavelengths. Using PLS-DA the weeds were discriminated from their surroundings with R2 …

Nest site selection and nesting success of plains sharp-tailed grouse were examined on the Grand River National Grassland in South Dakota during the nesting season from 2009-2012. We used conditional logistic regression to assess vegetation production, ecological site description, and landscape position on nest site selection. Two competing models regarding nest site selection: top model consisted of non-native forbs and native cool-season grasses, second best model included all grass and forb. Nine ESDs were used for nesting; loamy and clayey ecological sites most frequently used and produced the highest standing crop. Most frequent observed nest site State were Annual/Pioneer Perennial …

Empirical Study Of Two Hypothesis Test Methods For Community Structure In Networks, Yehong Nan Jan 2019

Empirical Study Of Two Hypothesis Test Methods For Community Structure In Networks, Yehong Nan

Statistics

Many real-world network data can be formulated as graphs, where a binary relation exists between nodes. One of the fundamental problems in network data analysis is community detection, clustering the nodes into different groups. Statistically, this problem can be formulated as hypothesis testing: under the null hypothesis, there is no community structure, while under the alternative hypothesis, community structure exists. One is of the method is to use the largest eigenvalues of the scaled adjacency matrix proposed by Bickel and Sarkar (2016), which works for dense graph. Another one is the subgraph counting method proposed by Gao and Lafferty (2017a), …

Triumph Of The Nomothetic: Personality Assessment And Forensic Psychology, Marvin W. Acklin

Archives of Assessment Psychology

This study locates personality assessment within the discipline of forensic psychology, examining the forensic relevance of major paradigms of personality assessment -- psychodynamic, interpersonal, personological, multivariate, empirical, and neuroscience -- with a focus on the clinical and forensic assessment of psychopathy. A credible personality paradigm must produce testable hypotheses, have associated assessment measures, and have a supporting empirical research literature (Wiggins, 1973). In the first survey, a systematic literature of the PsycINFO database revealed that all of the major personality assessment paradigms satisfy criteria for scientific credibility with the exception of the personological. In the second survey, the status of …

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Exposure to severe stress has immediate and prolonged neuropsychiatric consequences and increases the risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Importantly, PTSD develops in only a subset of individuals after exposure to a traumatic event, with the understanding of this selective vulnerability being very limited. Individuals who go on to develop PTSD after a traumatic experience typically demonstrate sleep disturbances including persistent insomnia and recurrent trauma-related nightmares. We previously established a repeated social defeat paradigm in which rats segregate into either passively or actively coping subpopulations, and we found that this distinction correlates with measures of vulnerability or resilience to …

Administrative States: Beyond Presidential Administration, Jessica Bulman-Pozen Jan 2019

Administrative States: Beyond Presidential Administration, Jessica Bulman-Pozen

Faculty Scholarship

Presidential administration is more entrenched and expansive than ever. Most significant policymaking comes from agency action rather than legislation. Courts endorse “the presence of Presidential power” in agency decisionmaking. Scholars give up on external checks and balances and take presidential direction as a starting point. Yet presidential administration is also quite fragile. Even as the Court embraces presidential control, it has been limiting the administrative domain over which the President presides. And when Presidents drive agency action in a polarized age, their policies are not only immediately contested but also readily reversed by their successors.

States complicate each piece of …
