Effects Of Eye Tracking During Infancy On Social Ambiguity And Emotional Distress, Gabriela Hernandez Jan 2019

Effects Of Eye Tracking During Infancy On Social Ambiguity And Emotional Distress, Gabriela Hernandez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between early eye tracking and later non-suicidal self-injury, and whether this relationship was negatively impacted by distress and impulsivity, and conversely alleviated by emotional regulation and problem solving abilities. Briggs-Gowan et al. (2001) found that young children with recurrent and comorbid externalizing and internalizing problems have the most impairment; they exhibit greater difficulty with emotional stability, and require greater utilization of mental health services. Little research has focused on the relationship between eye tracking in early infancy and suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) behavior in early childhood. Multiple regression analysis was used …

How Data Science Can Advance Mental Health Research, Tc Russ, E Woelbert, Kas Davis, Jd Hafferty, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Accessibility of powerful computers and availability of so-called big data from a variety of sources means that data science approaches are becoming pervasive. However, their application in mental health research is often considered to be at an earlier stage than in other areas despite the complexity of mental health and illness making such a sophisticated approach particularly suitable. In this Perspective, we discuss current and potential applications of data science in mental health research using the UK Clinical Research Collaboration classification: underpinning research; aetiology; detection and diagnosis; treatment development; treatment evaluation; disease management; and health services research. We demonstrate that …

Investigating Variation And Strength In Social Networks, Timothy D. Immelman, Richard M. Wielkiewicz Jan 2019

Investigating Variation And Strength In Social Networks, Timothy D. Immelman, Richard M. Wielkiewicz

Psychology Faculty Publications

Participants were 318 college students from two small, Catholic liberal arts institutions in the Upper Midwest. Variation (i.e., having friends with varied interests and activities) of an individual’s social network was measured by a researcher-developed inventory, the Social Network Variation Scale (SNVS). Social network strength was measured by the researcher-developed Social Network Strength Scale (SNSS). People with more variation or more strength in their social network had higher levels of happiness and lower levels of stress. Autonomy mediated the relationships between variation and stress and strength and stress. Personality moderated the relationships between variation and happiness and variation and stress.

Exploring The Buffering Effects Of Holding Behaviors On The Negative Consequences Of Workplace Discrimination For People Of Color, Heather A. Kohlman Olsen Jan 2019

Exploring The Buffering Effects Of Holding Behaviors On The Negative Consequences Of Workplace Discrimination For People Of Color, Heather A. Kohlman Olsen

Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations

Previous research suggests that discrimination is still a prevalent problem within organizations even with the current laws and policies in place in the United States to ensure equality of opportunity for minority groups. Therefore, people of color continue to report experiencing inequality and exclusion in the workplace. The broad purpose of the current investigation is to provide guidance to organizations regarding proactive strategies for mollifying the deleterious consequences that people of color often experience as a result of enduring numerous incidences of subtle discrimination in the workplace. Specifically, I proposed that when people of color report having trusting, supportive relationships …

The Library As A Lab For Student Work (Chapter 3), Cindy Pierard, Suzanne M. Schadl, Amy S. Jackson

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Students are emerging scholars whose work should be recognized and shared along with work created by established scholars. Libraries are actively engaged with student-created content and encourage students to see themselves as producers, not just consumers, of information. By shifting priorities, libraries should include student-created content in their spaces, and become participants in high-impact educational practices, increasing student investment in their learning, their engagement with scholarship at the institutional level, and their success and retention. These new priorities also open the library to new campus partnerships, making student scholarship and content a common goal.

Scholarship in the Sandbox is broken …

Undesirable Difficulties: Investigating Barriers To Students' Learning With Ebooks In A Semester-Length Course, Cindy Pierard, Vanessa Lynn Svihla, Susanne K. Clement, Bing-Shan Fazio

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Our ability to make informed decisions about ebooks is constrained by our limited understanding of how students perceive and use them. A team of librarians and a professor in learning sciences asked graduate students to serve as informants on student experience with ebooks. In two semester-long studies we analyzed student work, focusing on barriers and affordances they identified. In the first cohort, students who chose to explore ebooks uncovered affordances. In the second cohort, student comfort levels with PDF formats increased, while comfort with ebooks decreased. We discuss strategies for minimizing challenges and increasing desirable difficulties to support ebooks as …

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend Jan 2019

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce the idea of cultural humility, distinguish it from cultural competence, and argue that it has a role in librarianship. Design/methodology/approach: We use an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of humility to understand what cultural humility means and how it differs from cultural competence and other approaches to intercultural communication in libraries.

Findings: Despite some reservations with the term itself, we find that a practice of cultural humility is more appropriate to front-line interactions in library contexts than cultural competence models.

Practical implications: Libraries looking to address issues in intercultural communication and …

A Personalized And Platform-Independent Behavior Control System For Social Robots In Therapy: Development And Applications, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Social robots have been proven beneficial in different types of healthcare interventions. An ongoing trend is to develop (semi-)autonomous socially assistive robotic systems in healthcare context to improve the level of autonomy and reduce human workload. This paper presents a behavior control system for social robots in therapies with a focus on personalization and platform-independence. This system architecture provides the robot an ability to behave as a personable character, which behaviors are adapted to user profiles and responses during the human-robot interaction. Robot behaviors are designed at abstract levels and can be transferred to different social robot platforms. We adopt …

Engaging Undergraduate Students In The Philippines In Photonics Research With A Novel Publication-Driven Online Mentoring Approach, Minella C. Alarcon, Benjamin Dingel, Annelle Chua, Aria Buenaventura, Nathaniel Joseph C. Libatique

Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper discusses a publication-driven, education-by-research model of engaging undergraduate students in Photonics/Optics/Physics research by requiring that all activities lead to journal publication within a year. It is based on a non-traditional university-industry collaboration arrangement that has the following unique features.

First, it utilizes offshore-based alumni (in the USA) who are active in science and technology research as mentors for the students (in the Philippines) in conjunction with the university professor advisers. We adopt inexpensive online collaboration technologies to support their virtual presence.

Second, our research topic “fuses” uniquely two separate courses of study, namely: (i) the traditional Special Relativity …

Science Communication And Science-People Relationships, Hamlet Isakhanli Jan 2019

Science Communication And Science-People Relationships, Hamlet Isakhanli

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

There are two crucial types of communication in science and technology: interaction between scientists and communication between them and the public. Scientists enjoy the spoken and written communication between themselves in a symbolic language that is largely incomprehensible to others. Throughout History/ Archaeology, they have maintained contact with one another via the books they have written and read. The transition from handwritten to printed books contributed greatly to the development of science and culture. Correspondence and salons helped them to share information and unite the efforts of people of both science and art. The journals that emerged in the mid-17th …

Social And Psychological Factors Affecting Coping With And Adjusting To Disability, Alie Kriofske Mainella, Susan Miller Smedema Jan 2019

Social And Psychological Factors Affecting Coping With And Adjusting To Disability, Alie Kriofske Mainella, Susan Miller Smedema

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This chapter provides an overview of the social and psychological factors contributing to coping with and adjusting to disability by summarizing models; clinical implications, evidence-based practice, and measurement issues; and empirical research related to the process of coping with and adjustment to disability. While the models are useful for understanding a portion of the experience of people with disabilities and their coping and adjustment process, these reactions are not universal and not always experienced in an orderly sequence. Both coping and adaptation are multidimensional, complex processes affected by many factors and influenced by the person with the disability, the stress …

Building Human Rights Consciousness In Postconflict Societies: Peruvian Adolescents’ Understandings Of Human Rights, Gabriel M. Velez Jan 2019

Building Human Rights Consciousness In Postconflict Societies: Peruvian Adolescents’ Understandings Of Human Rights, Gabriel M. Velez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

During adolescence, individuals begin to form ideas about human rights as part of the development of a sense of self. The outcomes of these processes are influential in the stability and peace in postconflict societies. However, there remain many questions about how these youth construct ideas about human rights and how they become oriented toward promoting these in society through a developed human rights consciousness. This study investigates how adolescents in an underexplored area of postconflict societies—where past violence was not intimately experienced—understand human rights. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 fifteen-year-olds across five schools in Tacna, Peru. These adolescents …

The Relationship Between Personality Of Students In An Intergenerational Program And Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Maryam Marzban Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Personality Of Students In An Intergenerational Program And Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Maryam Marzban

Open Access Master's Theses

With the rapid aging of the population as well as increasing diversity in United State, research on ageism and intergenerational relationships is increasingly warranted. Ageism, or the prejudicial attitudes towards older adults, is seen as one of the most prevalent preconceived judgments that can cause poor treatment, and may even decrease levels of confidence, happiness, and health for older adults (Bishop, 2016). Intergenerational programs can provide many benefits for both younger and older adults, including developing positive changes in attitude towards aging (Wescott & Healy, 2011). Currently, the University of Rhode Island (URI) Engaging Generations: Cyber-Seniors program was developed to …

Global Patterns Of Net Respiration In Subseafloor Sediment, Victoria Madison Fulfer Jan 2019

Global Patterns Of Net Respiration In Subseafloor Sediment, Victoria Madison Fulfer

Open Access Master's Theses

Microbial life is abundant in subseafloor sediment. Rates of respiration in subseafloor sediment appear to be very slow, but are generally poorly constrained. This thesis aims to address this problem by quantifying respiration rates in subseafloor sediment at sites across the globe and determining geographic patterns of depth-integrated respiration rates and average per-cell respiration rates. First, we compiled pore water profiles and descriptive data from scientific coring and drilling sediment cores deposited in publicly accessible databases. Using these profiles, we quantified the global distribution of net respiration rates in subseafloor sediment (>1.5 meters below seafloor) using (i) a reaction-transport …

Data Analytics For Wearable Iot-Based Telemedicine, Rassoul Diouf

Open Access Master's Theses

Parkinson’s disease (PD, Parkinson’s) is a common neurodegenerative disease affecting over 10 million individuals worldwide. Its main marker is the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, an area of the midbrain. The root cause of PD is currently unknown. Besides, the disease is progressive, and the symptoms worsen as the ones affected grow older. Motor symptoms such as tremors, slowness of movement, and muscular rigidity, along with other non-motor ones, such as trouble with sleep, may occur. The current solutions for PD are medication and, in cases when the disease does not respond to it as much as …

Computer-mediated collaborative writing has drawn attention from second language researchers and instructors for a few decades, and due to recent developments in Web 2.0 technologies, the possibilities of wikis for collaborative writing have increased enormously. However, few studies have explored the nature of wiki collaboration and interaction, especially with small group writing activities using wikis. This study investigated how intermediate-level international ESL students at an urban U.S. Mid-South university interacted within the wiki-based collaborative writing platform Pbworks.com. Students and instructors perspectives toward the integration of wikis in writing assignments addressed. Sixty-four students, grouped into twenty-five groups of three, were asked …

A Quantitative Study On The Construct Of Planning And Designing Instruction For Early Childhood Teachers Professional Development In Selected Tennessee Schools, Jennie Gibson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract The purpose of this study is to evaluate early childhood teachers perceptions regarding their specific needs and the job-embedded professional development training they have been provided. The study will explore two core areas regarding the program planning of early childhood teacher professional development: planning context and designing instruction. In this study, planning context includes opportunities for reflection, collaboration and feedback, and choices regarding structure and content. As these are key components of job-embedded professional development, they are included to measure teacher perceptions of prior professional development. Designing instruction involves the following concepts: topics of student teacher relationships, child development …

The Role And Function Of School Counselors In Charter Schools, Allison Grabias Jan 2019

The Role And Function Of School Counselors In Charter Schools, Allison Grabias

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Charter schools have become a mainstream educational reform over the past two decades. Charter schools are public schools, but have autonomy to make decisions independent of local school boards. School counselors across the country use the American School Counselor Association National Model to create and evaluate their comprehensive school counseling programs. Charter schools are based on the idea of innovation and educational reform. Consequently, job roles are frequently redefined. Charter school counselors have been absent from the research. The purpose of this study was to explore the role and function of school counselors in charter schools and examine if their …
