What Supports Are Needed To Encourage And Assist Community Festivals And Events To Succeed And Grow? An Empirical Study., Helen Mcdwyer
What Supports Are Needed To Encourage And Assist Community Festivals And Events To Succeed And Grow? An Empirical Study., Helen Mcdwyer
Theses
Abstract: Communities are motivated to host festivals and events for a myriad of reasons. They generate important economic and social benefits for an area with increased visitor numbers, increased local spending and greater community cohesion. Festival and event tourism is an important segment of the overall tourism product in Ireland, particularly in an area such as Kerry where there is a heavy reliance on tourism. Many festivals and events in Kerry are organised by community and voluntary groups and yet these groups are increasingly pressurised to increase the professionality of their offering to compete for regional funding and sponsorship. Changes …

Developing A Model Of Post Incubation Support For New And Growing Ventures, Miriam Adair
Theses
Business incubators offer physical and virtual services for their new and growing start up clients. In Ireland, once companies exit an incubator, they do not have access to services similar to an incubator. In other countries there are post incubation services available.
There is a limited literature on post incubation in Ireland, however there is literature focusing on different programmes available to companies once they have left an incubator.
This thesis explores the post incubation support needs of new' and growing ventures.
Specifically, the research focused on three primary objectives:
1. To gain a deeper understanding of the specific needs …

Introduction: The experience of pregnancy is individualistic and an important experience for a woman. The process of child birth is viewed as a rebirth of the woman, because of the very fact that the period of pregnancy, child birth and puerperium, which show a very normal course till that time, may suddenly turn in to life threatening situations called obstetrical emergencies. These conditions endanger the life of both the mother and the baby. Hence, it is the bound duty of all the obstetrical care providers to give due concentration in identifying the emergency conditions and safe guarding the life of …
Prisoner, Prison And Situational Characteristics And Their Relationship With The Prevalence, Incidence And Type Of Prison Offending Recorded By A Sample Of Prisoners Within Western Australian Prisons, Catharine Phillips
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The importance that researchers and prison administrators have placed on ensuring that the good governance, security and safety of prisons are maintained has generated a number of studies of prison offending. Previous studies have identified several prisoner, prison and situational characteristics as relevant in regard to their relationship with the prevalence, incidence and type of prison offences committed. However, no studies have been conducted in Australia, and therefore no studies have included Aboriginal prisoners in their prisoner samples. In addition, the differences in regard to legislation pertaining to prison offending between jurisdictions is also of importance when considering the generalisability …
An Investigation Of Secondary Student Perceptions Of Fairness About Assessment Processes Implemented By Their Teachers, Tania Blazevic
An Investigation Of Secondary Student Perceptions Of Fairness About Assessment Processes Implemented By Their Teachers, Tania Blazevic
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research investigated the effects of secondary school teachers’ assessment practices on students’ perceptions of fairness in Croatia. It focused on the extent to which teachers implemented consistent assessment practices and made judgements of student achievements, and how this affected students’ perceptions.
The need for assessment influences its creation and implementation, which in turn influences the outcomes. Teachers’ assessment of students is an ongoing practice in schools in Croatia, both officially and unofficially, and questions about consistent application have persisted. This research was motivated by a confrontation with a disgruntled student and set in motion an examination of teachers’ application …
Writing As Dancing: The Dancer In Your Hands , A Novella <>, Joanna Tollemache Pollitt
Writing As Dancing: The Dancer In Your Hands , A Novella <>, Joanna Tollemache Pollitt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
With the premise to ‘write like I dance,’ Writing as dancing investigates new methods of accessing and revealing choreographic thinking in three distinct ways; writing as a soloist, writing for the ensemble and writing responsively in collaboration. Resulting iterations have variously emerged in the form of performance, novella, play, artist-book, exhibition and long form poem; the novella The Dancer in Your Hands, being the primary solo work presented alongside this exegesis.
The research posits engagement with solo dance improvisation practice as a dynamically charged, and tangible way of thinking that is transferable to the practice of writing. It draws …
Mothers’ Experiences Of Their Adult Child’S Interethnic Relationship, Nikki Rajakaruna
Mothers’ Experiences Of Their Adult Child’S Interethnic Relationship, Nikki Rajakaruna
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The number of interethnic relationships is increasing in many countries around the world. Research regarding the experiences of interethnic couples indicates considerable variation in the reactions of parents towards such relationship types (as reported by those within the relationship). In some studies, significant and sometimes violent opposition has been reported, resulting in negative consequences for the adult child, the couple and presumably the parents. Despite such reports, no research has considered the experiences of parents from the perspective of parents themselves. As such, I explored mothers’ experiences of their child’s interethnic relationship with the aim of determining the nature of …
Re-Composing Feminism: Australian Women Composers In The New Millennium, Talisha Goh
Re-Composing Feminism: Australian Women Composers In The New Millennium, Talisha Goh
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In the age of postfeminism and fourth-wave feminism online, Australian women composers are theoretically able to “have it all,” however, the proportion of women in the occupation appears to have plateaued in recent years. In this thesis, I explore the multiple ways in which gender and feminism interact with practising Australian women composers. Feminist musicology has had a large impact on the Australian musicological scene, with theorists such as McClary and Macarthur bringing the subject of women in music to the fore in the 1990s, aiding efforts to advocate for reform on behalf of women composers. Additionally, third-wave feminist scholars …

Towards Interaction: Combining Jazz Techniques And Idiomatic Writing For Varied Ensembles. A Collection Of Musical Works -And- An Exegesis, Glyn Alan Macdonald
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This practice-led research project has produced musical works that bring together ensembles from the Western Classical tradition that only read notation, and, jazz soloists who improvise. Three works ‘Standing Ground’, ‘The Journey’ and ‘Matt versus the Zombies’ were composed for three ensembles each with an improvising soloist. These ensembles included a British style Brass Band, Brass Quintet and a double Saxophone quartet.
The project built on the work of Andy Scott and Eddie Sauter, both of whom wrote for non-jazz ensembles and an improvising artist without including a jazz rhythm section. The accompanying non-jazz ensemble was written in such a …

The Influence Of Barbell And Body Position On Force-Time Characteristics In The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull, Stuart Nathan Guppy
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Publication 1: The Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull: A Review and Methodology – Part 1 Isometric tests are commonly used to monitor physical qualities that underpin athletic performance. As single-joint laboratory-based tests display poor relationships to the multi-joint movements found in sport, multi-joint isometric tests like the isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) are commonly used instead. Force-time characteristics in these multijoint tests typically display stronger relationships to dynamic performance, particularly in the case of the isometric mid-thigh pull. As such this review focuses on the relationships between force-time characteristics in the IMTP and dynamic athletic performance.

Linking Patient Safety To Clinical Practice: The Insight Of New Graduate Registered Nurses, Melanie Murray
Linking Patient Safety To Clinical Practice: The Insight Of New Graduate Registered Nurses, Melanie Murray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
New graduate registered nurses’ (NGRNs) transition to practice with limited clinical experiences and skills. The related anxiety and stress predispose new graduate nurses to increased risk of contributing to preventable errors or adverse events. This risk, together with the new graduate’s fledgling ability to manage clinical deterioration, potentially compromises quality and safety of patient outcomes.
A longitudinal mixed methods design was used to develop an understanding of new graduate registered nurses’ patient safety knowledge and actions within the first year of nursing registration and offer important insights into NGRNs’ transition with a patient safety focus. New graduate registered nurses employed …

Integrated Ecosystem Analysis In Irish Waters; Providing The Context For Ecosystem-Based Sheries Management, D Pedreschi, P Bouch, M Moriarty, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Fishing has long been considered the most impactful human activity on the marine ecosystem. To adopt ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) requires consideration of all human impacts, not just those of fishing. The ODEMM (Options for Delivering Ecosystem-based Marine Management) approach provides an integrated ecosystem assessment that is a flexible, cost-efficient and expert-based. The framework traces the sectors affecting the marine environment, the pressures they create, and the ecological characteristics affected. This research presents the first application of the ODEMM framework outside of the ODEMM project, completed for Ireland’s marine waters. The assessment places fishing in the context of other anthropogenic …

’Global Modernity’ In China And France: Flattening Boundaries Between Foreign Brandscapes & Regional Urban Heritage, I Troiani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper studies transnational architecture and ‘global modernity’ through the reading of two photographs of foreign, iconic buildings in China and France. The ?rst photograph by Hufton + Crow (2012) is of the Galaxy SOHO in Beijing by the Iraqi-born, British architect, Zaha Hadid Architect (ZHA) in collaboration with the state-ownedChineseBIAD(BeijingInstituteofArchitectureandDesign).Thelandmark, futurist ZHA building looks to have gobbled up the local urban heritage around it. The second photograph by Marc Petitjean taken in 1975 is of the Pompidou Centre in Paris under-construction and was designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano with Gianfranco Franchini. In front of the Pompidou Centre …

Spoken-Not-Spoken, Written-Not-Written: From Gossip And Rumor To Architectural History, I Troiani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
In this essay, I examine the communication of professional practitioners in architecture, understood here as language in action, and explore the space that scholarship leaves between informal / oral and formal / written accounts of history or between what is spoken and not spoken and written and not written by those working within and beyond the discipline. While formal interviews are acceptable methods used in historiographic research, informal conversations are often seen as spurious. But this need not be the case. I will show in this essay how I positively employed gossip and rumour- sources often dismissed because they are …

Corporate Social Responsibility, Path Dependency And Cultural Influence: An Analysis Of Equitable Health Insurance Schemes For Niger, Reynatou Mounkaila Noma
Plymouth Business School Theses
Health care is essential for the wellbeing of people and the development of a country. Populations in developing countries tend to encounter challenges in accessing good healthcare which could however be improved with health insurance. This thesis investigates the reasons for the low health coverage in Niger, in the perspective of proposing equitable schemes for attaining universal coverage. The study sheds light on the low rate of health insurance coverage in the country, as at least 70 % of the population, essentially from the informal sector does not have sustainable health insurance plan. For this study, the theoretical framework of …

An Analysis Of The Country-Of-Origin Effect On The Hrm Policies And Practices Of Finnish Mncs Operating In Italy, Rossana Guttilla
Plymouth Business School Theses
There is considerable debate in the literature as to the determinants of human resource policies and practices of foreign subsidiaries. Are these representatives of global emerging best practices and pointing to a convergence of Human Resource Management systems? Are they shaped by the cultural and institutional constraints of the host country? Or are they subject to country-of-origin effect? This study makes a significant contribution by examining the role of country-of-origin effect in the Italian subsidiaries of Finnish Multinational Corporations (MNCs); with the aim of exploring if and how it manifests itself and what are the main factors that strengthen or …
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Performance Management In Higher Education, Andrew Brown
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Performance Management In Higher Education, Andrew Brown
Plymouth Business School Theses
Recent changes in higher education sector have resulted in an increasingly marketised and competitive environment. Fee changes have heightened student expectations, whilst neo-liberal approaches, such as the removal of the student number cap have intensified focus on the recruitment and retention of students. Consequently performance in a variety of league tables has become a primary area of concern for universities, both as a means of student attraction and also as a response to pressure from a range of stakeholders. It is against this backdrop, that this research considers the impact of performance management within the sector. It is through such …

Fathers At Work: Challenges And Stereotypes Facing Fathers With Caregiving Responsibilities In Employment, Jasmine Kelland
Plymouth Business School Theses
This study explores how caregiving fathers are perceived in contemporary employment to establish if this contributes to an understanding of the dominance of fathers in the role of ‘breadwinner’. Much existing research in this area is based in the US, largely utilising students as participants, and has limited applicability to contemporary UK fatherhood. This study employs a mixed methods design underpinned by a social constructivist standpoint, with managers and working parents as participants. Understanding regarding the perceptions of caregiving fathers is sought through exploring how such fathers are rated when they apply for work utilising online vignettes, vignette based focus …
