Women And The Catholic Church: Turning Point In Pope Francis’ Pontificate?, Karin Heller
Women And The Catholic Church: Turning Point In Pope Francis’ Pontificate?, Karin Heller
Theology Faculty Scholarship
This article is a modified version of an open letter written in German and addressed to Pope Francis. It was published in a collective e-book entitled Wir teilen diesen Traum. Theologinnen und Theologen aus aller Welt argumentieren Pro Pope Francis, edited by Paul M. Zulehner/Tomas Halik, Patmos Verlag, 2019. The e-book encompasses 150 contributions of which 78 were written by female and male theologians worldwide. The editor Paul Zulehner notes in his introduction to this monumental collective work: “The women question is the only theme where Pope Francis meets clear, but constructive critique.” Karin Heller’s contribution brings to the …

Art In The Museum, Christopher Janneck
Writing Across the Curriculum
I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art (“the Met”) found at 1000 Fifth Avenue in New York City on Saturday, September 15, 2018, during a visit home. Although there was substantial traffic because of a German Heritage parade, it was a beautiful day to visit a magnificent museum. Everything about the Met is grand, including its entrance lobby and its artwork. I passed a few hours wandering the different halls with my family, while taking pictures and notes for this assignment. Some of my favorites during this visit was the Heavenly Bodies exhibit and the many halls filled by American …
Human Freedom And The Invisible Church From The Viewpoint Of Bavinck's Pneumatology, Dong-Yaul Tae
Human Freedom And The Invisible Church From The Viewpoint Of Bavinck's Pneumatology, Dong-Yaul Tae
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Although Reformed pneumatology is generally recognized by scholars of Calvin and Reformed confessions to be relatively well developed compared to the various pneumatologies of the Western theological tradition, it faces two important challenges. First, Reformed pneumatology is directly linked to the critique that Reformed soteriology’s accentuation of predestination and effectual grace leads to inevitable fatalism that ignores human freedom. This is because the ministry of the Holy Spirit is crucial in the Reformed understanding of the order of salvation beginning with regeneration and ending with glorification. Second, because the ministry of the Holy Spirit is a key to understanding Reformed …
"Femme Fatales Of Faith": Queer And "Deviant" Performances Of Femme Within Western Protestant Culture, Kelsey Waninger Minnick
"Femme Fatales Of Faith": Queer And "Deviant" Performances Of Femme Within Western Protestant Culture, Kelsey Waninger Minnick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Women and queer folk are changing the religious landscape of Christianity in America, and the scope of visibility for these figures and their apostolic endeavors is widening as more and more Christians are seeking out communities rooted in doctrines of love and connection rather than exclusion and hegemonic piety. Thinking on this phenomenon, this dissertation focuses on the intersectional dilemmas of faith practice and rhetorical discourse with Western Christianity, particularly as it revolves around those female pastors and clergy - considered "dangerous" by many within the church - who are advocating for a more inclusionary church space. By conducting a …

Advocating For Dreamers: A Wesleyan Approach To U.S. Immigration Reform, Rebekah Clapp
Advocating For Dreamers: A Wesleyan Approach To U.S. Immigration Reform, Rebekah Clapp
The Asbury Journal
This paper argues that Wesley's theology supports radical hospitality toward all U.S. immigrants, regardless of documentation. Specifically, the emphasis John Wesley placed on loving one's neighbor forces us to consider the immigrant's well being alongside our own. Additionally, his understanding of liberty calls for Christians to support human flourishing for all people. Further, Wesley's argument that all humanity is to be considered equal rejects any idea of superiority or supremacy as justification for withholding hospitality. Finally, in John Welsey's daily spiritual practices, he emphasized care for society's most vulnerable members- who must, in contemporary times, include the immigrant. In John …

Diaspora, Migration, And Refugees In Europe: Developing Leadership Within Multicultural Teams, Matthew S. Paschall
Diaspora, Migration, And Refugees In Europe: Developing Leadership Within Multicultural Teams, Matthew S. Paschall
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study addressed the challenge of developing leaders in the midst of the recent refugee crisis in Europe, historic waves of immigration, and ongoing global migration of diaspora peoples. Migration has led to unprecedented diversity in leadership as leaders from the Global South are relocating North and West. Each person carries preconceived cultural notions of how leaders should function and interact. Church and mission leaders must be equipped to navigate this complex cultural environment in order for multicultural teams to work effectively. The researcher based the theology of multicultural leadership in the Trinity where Father, Son, and Spirit expressed …
Equipping The Congregation Of East Belmont Baptist Church In Belmont, North Carolina For Outreach Through The Development And Implementation Of An Active Prayer Ministry, Jeff Dean Taylor
Doctor of Ministry Projects
In a local congregation, joining the spiritual practice of prayer with the ministry of outreach provides the church with an effective ministry tool to connect the congregation to its community and beyond. The East Belmont Baptist Church searches for effective ways to carry out the mission of making Christ known to others by equipping themselves through study and sermons to use prayer as a ministry in the community. Through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, congregational members meet people where they are and minister to them through intercessory prayer.

Biblical And Historical Echoes In The Harbinger Of Light, Declan Onwudiwe
Biblical And Historical Echoes In The Harbinger Of Light, Declan Onwudiwe
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Review
Princewill Sunday C. Ezekwonna's The Harbinger of Light is a theologically rich and historically grounded text that synthesizes biblical archetypes with the colonial and postcolonial experiences of Nigeria. Framed through a prophetic and philosophical lens, the work is anchored in Genesis 1:3–5 and other scriptural passages, offering moral commentary on divine illumination, leadership ethics, and national destiny. Each of the 20 chapters concludes with canonical reflections, emphasizing the book's instructional purpose for both individual and communal moral recalibration, thereby empowering the reader with a deeper understanding of these crucial themes.

Minister As Mentor: A Biblical Model For The Preparation Of A Mentoring Ministry At First Baptist Church In Reidsville, North Carolina, Thomas Leroy Barksdale Ii
Doctor of Ministry Projects
A preparation model was developed to equip mentors to effectively engage, encourage, and guide community youth. Members of the Christian faith have a responsibility to reach out and impact positively the next generations of leaders. Potential mentors were led through developmental sessions to prepare for the mentor relationships. Surveys, journal entries, pre-posttests, and questionnaires measured the effectiveness of the developmental weekly sessions and engagement.

This research project focused on the development of a unified theological vision for the missional movement with specific attention given to the United States. The researcher conducted a thorough investigation of Scripture and current biblical material in order to discern the barriers existing within the missional movement. The researcher looked at key areas that shape the missional church planting movement: leadership development, theological interpretation of the early church, church planting methods and practice, ecclesiology, and the application and interpretation of Ephesians 4:11. Four church planting organizations participated: North American Mission Board (NAMB), Acts 29 Network, Association of Related Churches (ARC), …

Awana Together: Empowering Parents As Spiritual Mentors For Their Children, Sara-Jane Heacox Sosa
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The post-Christian culture in the United States presents a significant challenge to the spiritual growth of adults and children. At Plymouth Covenant Church, ministry leaders recognized that young parents often lacked a biblical foundation. Many did not feel competent to lead their children spiritually. These parents needed a vibrant personal faith as well as good role models and encouragement. As a result, ministry leaders designed a more effective way to empower parents as spiritual mentors for their children. They created a new ministry that would provide personal faith development for parents, a supportive faith community, family-focused programming, and solid biblical …
“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
“Visiting Iniquity Of Fathers Against Sons” In Exodus, Thomas Egger
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Egger, Thomas J. “‘Visiting Iniquity of Fathers against Sons’ in Exodus.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2018. 665 pp.
In two of the most important passages in Exodus (20:5 and 34:7), Yahweh describes himself as “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons, even against members of the third and fourth generations.” Missing in nearly every treatment of this phrase has been any sustained consideration of the phrase within the context of the Exodus narrative itself. Apart from such interpretive grounding, “visiting iniquity of fathers against sons” has shown itself susceptible to widely varied and contradictory readings and, especially, maximally problematizing readings which …
