Bibliometrics For Faculty Evaluation: A Statistical Comparison Of H-Indexes Generated Using Google Scholar And Web Of Science Data, David J. Dunaway Jan 2019

Bibliometrics For Faculty Evaluation: A Statistical Comparison Of H-Indexes Generated Using Google Scholar And Web Of Science Data, David J. Dunaway

Faculty Publications

The growing need for quantification of research performance for promotion and tenure

and grant funding decisions has lead many to rely on citation metrics. There are many metrics to choose from but one of the most common is the h-index. While the h-index has been criticized by many, the metric itself is not the only concern. The source of the citation information used to calculate the h-index is also important. In this case study the h-index was calculated using citation data from Clarivate’s Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar (GS) for a selection of faculty working at a large …

War Matters: Material Culture In The Civil War Era, Emily Wells Jan 2019

War Matters: Material Culture In The Civil War Era, Emily Wells

Civil War Book Review

The Civil War remains a pivotal event in southern history, with many themes resurfacing throughout its long academic life. Yet, one area that Civil War historians tend to ignore is material culture, which could open an entirely new vein of interpretation while also underscoring the intersections between race, class, and gender on the battlefield and home front. War Matters offers a refreshing analysis of the economic, social, political, and cultural nuances of the Civil War era through the use of material culture. Editor Joan E. Cashin and her fellow contributors focus on objects as small as pocketbook bibles and as …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Physical Activity Among Adult Arab Immigrants In Edmonton, Alberta, Samer Kobrosly Jan 2019

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Physical Activity Among Adult Arab Immigrants In Edmonton, Alberta, Samer Kobrosly

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Little is known about leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) habits of Arab immigrants in Canada. Leisure-time physical activity has been linked to decreased risks for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and all causes mortality and increased life expectancy. Socioeconomic status has been recognized as a significant factor affecting health and wellbeing due to its impact on individuals’ attitudes, experiences, and exposure to several risk factors. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to explore the levels of participation in LTPA among adult Arab immigrants in central Alberta, Canada, to examine the socioeconomic determinants of LTPA, and to investigate which individual, social, and …

Social And Cultural Concepts Module: Curricula To Foster Cultural Responsiveness, Elizabeth Ching, Elsa Contreras, Precious Dimalanta, Linda Duran, Robert Freeman, Ursula Hawe, Susannah Hong, Wilton Ramos Jan 2019

Social And Cultural Concepts Module: Curricula To Foster Cultural Responsiveness, Elizabeth Ching, Elsa Contreras, Precious Dimalanta, Linda Duran, Robert Freeman, Ursula Hawe, Susannah Hong, Wilton Ramos

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The lack of racial diversity in the occupational therapy profession as well as its educational programs are obstacles in providing culturally responsive care to serve all people, populations, and communities. Research has shown that student engagement in case studies, activities that emphasize exposure to diverse populations, reflective journaling, and interviewing someone from a different culture are effective in developing practitioners who are more culturally responsive. Students from one culturally diverse occupational therapy program took a nine-hour Social and Cultural Concepts Module (SCCM) that incorporated best practice pedagogy for teaching cultural responsiveness. A one group pretest-posttest design was utilized to explore …

The Survival Of Irish Gaelic In The Gaeltacht Of County Galway, 1880-1920, Eileen Hogan Jan 2019

The Survival Of Irish Gaelic In The Gaeltacht Of County Galway, 1880-1920, Eileen Hogan

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In the 1850s in post-famine Ireland, the Irish-Gaelic language was neglected in favor of English which equipped speakers to be members of the United Kingdom. But, the agrarian society of the County Galway Gaeltacht (designated Irish-speaking region) remained a stronghold of the Irish language despite British imperialists. The Survival of Irish-Gaelic addresses the survival of the native language in the Galway Gaeltacht. While my work has identified several reasons for the survival in this one specific region, this thesis focuses upon interrelated explanations. First, the Catholic schools in the Gaeltacht continued to teach in Irish despite the attempts of the …

An Investigation Of Perspectives On Mental Illness Across Race And Ethnicity, Emily Stark Jan 2019

An Investigation Of Perspectives On Mental Illness Across Race And Ethnicity, Emily Stark

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

"Previous research done on mental illness stigma and race and ethnicity has failed to properly recognize the complexity of identity and cultural influences and how these factors impact people’s perceptions of mental illness. These studies tend to insinuate that any differences of beliefs found between groups are due to race or ethnicity, when in fact this is an imprudent conclusion. In this thesis, a critical analysis of the literature on mental illness stigma and race and ethnicity determines that categorizing people into large homogenous groups based on race or ethnicity results in an inaccurate picture of what people believe about …

From Fetish To Fashion: Japanese Style As Commodity In 19th And 20th Century Britain, Rebecca Schmiegel Jan 2019

From Fetish To Fashion: Japanese Style As Commodity In 19th And 20th Century Britain, Rebecca Schmiegel

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Japanese representation in art and design brought about an age when, according to a reporter at a 1878 international exhibition in Paris, “even the greatest mistresses of European crafts lay down their weapons in shame.”1 women’s fashions were able to transcend national borders through the development of Japanese designs, Orientalist ideals, and the importance of the body. Eastern eroticism was heightened through British designers, as seen in the development of the Western kimono. From Fetish to Fashion focuses on how the relationship between the state and culture can be established by an unexpected medium: women’s fashion.

This thesis examines how …

History In American New Wave And Hard Renaissance Science Fiction, Joseph Donaldson Jan 2019

History In American New Wave And Hard Renaissance Science Fiction, Joseph Donaldson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the novels of American New Wave Science Fiction authors Philip K. Dick and Ursula K. Le Guin as well as the novels of American Hard Renaissance Science Fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson. This examination places the rhetoric of these three authors into the larger discourse in Science Fiction that metaphorically visualizes the physics of space-time, historiography, periodization, and narrative form. By crafting nonteleological arguments against hard determinism, Dick and Le Guin effect Robinson’s ahistorical perspectives celebrating human agency

Toward Theories Of Partnership Praxis: An Analysis Of Interpretive Framing In Literature On Students As Partners In Teaching And Learning, Kelly E. Matthews, Alison Cook-Sather, Anita Acai, Sam Lucie Dvorakova, Peter Felten, Elizabeth Marquis, Lucy Mercer-Mapstone

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

A body of literature on students as partners (SaP) in higher education has emerged over the last decade that documents, shares, and evaluates SaP approaches. As is typical in emerging fields of inquiry, scholars differ regarding how they see the relationship between the developments in SaP practices and the theoretical explanations that guide, illuminate, and situate such practices. In this article we explore the relationship between theory and practice in SaP work through an analysis of interpretive framing employed in scholarship of SaP in teaching and learning in higher education. Through a conceptual review of selected publications, we describe three …

Democratic Theory When Democracy Is Fugitive, Joel Alden Schlosser, Ali Aslam, David Mcivor Jan 2019

Democratic Theory When Democracy Is Fugitive, Joel Alden Schlosser, Ali Aslam, David Mcivor

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

Urgent alarms now warn of the erosion of democratic norms and the decline of democratic institutions. These antidemocratic trends have prompted some democratic theorists to reject the seeming inevitability of democratic forms of government and instead to consider democracy as a fugitive phenomenon. Fugitive democracy, as we argue below, is a theory composed of two parts. First, it includes a robust, normative ideal of democracy and, second, a clear-eyed vision of the historical defeats and generic difficulties attendant to that ideal. This article considers how democratic theorists might respond to the challenges posed by fugitive democracy and the implications of …

The Iatrogenic Consequences Of Global Health Incentives: An Examination Of Tradition Birth Attendant Attitudes, Medical Paradigms, And Power Struggles In Rural Tanzania, Malory Henry Jan 2019

The Iatrogenic Consequences Of Global Health Incentives: An Examination Of Tradition Birth Attendant Attitudes, Medical Paradigms, And Power Struggles In Rural Tanzania, Malory Henry

Whittier Scholars Program

Despite best intentions, global health development initiatives have historically drawn on a universalized notion of ‘traditional notion’ as the basis for intervention. These international organizations generate a discourse of development in which the global attempts to control the local, complicating relational paradigms and experiences. A concrete example of the way in which the international institutions attempt to ‘develop’ local communities is through the implementation of training programs. Although these interventions are supported as progressive attempts to ‘bridge gaps’ between local realities and global imaginaries, they establish paradigms that ignore lived experience. Thus, this study aims to discuss the history and …

Final Report On The 2011-2017 Fieldwork At La 20,000 La Cienega New Mexico, Heather Trigg, Christina Spellman, John M. Steinberg

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

This report details the work undertaken to explore the foundations of Spanish New Mexican society at LA 20,000. Originally identified in 1980 when the landowner trenched through the midden, the site is the most complex, best preserved 17th-century Spanish ranch thus far identified archaeologically. The site was the location of 11 years of fieldwork, first by the Museum of New Mexico, then by Mr. David H. Snow and Dr. Marianne Stoller. This site affords an unparalleled opportunity to explore 17th-century New Mexico and the foundations of Hispanic society. Our major research goals were: to investigate the construction and use of …

“Essentially Black”: Legal Theory And The Morality Of Conscious Racial Identity, Kenneth B. Nunn Jan 2019

“Essentially Black”: Legal Theory And The Morality Of Conscious Racial Identity, Kenneth B. Nunn

UF Law Faculty Publications

In philosophy, essentialism involves the claim that everything that exists has a fundamental character or core set of features that makes it what it is. Although this idea developed out of Platonic notions of ideal forms, it has spread beyond philosophy into the social sciences and hard scientific disciplines like mathematics and biology. Since the advent of postmodernism, discussions around essentialism have become controversial. Adherents of postmodern theory argue that social categories, such as gender, race, and sexuality are socially constructed and that essentialist notions of identity, which suggest that identity is static, natural, and unchanging, are theoretically wrong. This …
