Review: Julie K. Allen. Danish But Not Lutheran: The Impact Of Mormonism On Danish Cultural Identity, 1850–1920. Salt Lake City: University Of Utah Press, 2017., Margit Egdal
Mormon Studies Review
America’s status as a land with a large and diverse immigrant population has long contrasted with the relatively homogenous populations of Europe. However, this situation has changed dramatically throughout Europe in recent decades. In Denmark, migrant workers and refugees from across Europe, Africa, and Asia have made for a more multicultural society.
Review: Terryl L. Givens. Feeding The Flock: The Foundations Of Mormon T Hought: Church And Praxis. New York And Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017., J. B. Haws
Mormon Studies Review
Terryl Givens has been calling, for some time, for a broader and more serious engagement with the theology of the Church of Latter-day Saints—and he has framed that call in memorable language, as only he can. Here’s what he wrote for the University of Chicago Divinity School’s Martin Marty Center in 2012: “In the century since the [1893] Chicago [World’s] fair, Mormons have been lauded for their choirs and their football. They are largely respected as good, decent, family-centered people, who are welcome to sing for presidents and dance with the stars—and everyone agrees to avoid theological questions.”1 Not if …
Content-Based Music Recommendation Using Deep Learning, Ryan Whitell
Content-Based Music Recommendation Using Deep Learning, Ryan Whitell
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Music streaming services use recommendation systems to improve the customer experience by generating favorable playlists and by fostering the discovery of new music. State of the art recommendation systems use both collaborative filtering and content-based recommendation methods. Collaborative filtering suffers from the cold start problem; it can only make recommendations for music for which it has enough user data, so content-based methods are preferred. Most current content-based recommendation systems use convolutional neural networks on the spectrograms of track audio. The architectures are commonly borrowed directly from the field of computer vision. It is shown in this study that musically-motivated convolutional …

Health Justice For Immigrants, Medha D. Makhlouf
Health Justice For Immigrants, Medha D. Makhlouf
Faculty Scholarly Works
Should universal health coverage include immigrants within the “universe?” Should federal taxpayers subsidize health insurance coverage for immigrants, even those who are undocumented? Should all immigrants be required to purchase health insurance? Although the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is conceived as a progressive project to expand access to coverage and promote equity in health care, it intentionally left out the 12.5 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States and preserved the existing restrictions on subsidized coverage for lawfully present non-citizens. In fact, it increased the disparity in access to health care between U.S. citizens and immigrants. As a result, …

Ua45 2019-2020 Four-Year Degree Paths, Wku Registrar
WKU Administration Documents
An addendum to the 2019-2020 Undergraduate Catalog
The purpose of the Four-Year Degree Path is to assist undergraduate students in determining a timeline for completion of their undergraduate degree program. Each path displayed within this website provides students with the anticipated order in which a degree would typically be completed in a timely fashion at Western Kentucky University.
The Degree Paths show appropriate timing and spacing of general education, core course requirements, elective suggestions, prerequisites and displays how each of these requirements may be met during a four-year time frame.
The Degree Path is simply a guideline and might not …

Differential Responses To Constraints On Naming Agency Among Indigenous Peoples And Immigrants In Canada, Karen E. Pennesi
Differential Responses To Constraints On Naming Agency Among Indigenous Peoples And Immigrants In Canada, Karen E. Pennesi
Anthropology Publications
This article illuminates the social structures and relations that shape agency for members of two marginalized groups in Canada and examines how individuals respond differently to constraints on their power to name themselves and their children. Constraints on spelling, structure and choice of name are framed according to the particular positions of indigenous peoples and immigrants in relation to European settler society as either ‘original inhabitants’ or ‘recent arrivals’. These historically unequal power relations are manifest in intertwined ideologies of language, identity and nation, evident in ethnographic interviews, media reports and online commentary. Differential responses include resistance, endurance and assimilation.

Probiotics, Health and Nutrition
The study of traditional populations provides a view of human-associated microbes unperturbed by industrialization, as well as a window into the microbiota that co-evolved with humans. Here we discuss our recent work characterizing the microbiota from the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania. We found seasonal shifts in bacterial taxa, diversity, and carbohydrate utilization by the microbiota. When compared to the microbiota composition from other populations around the world, the Hadza microbiota shares bacterial families with other traditional societies that are rare or absent from microbiotas of industrialized nations. We present additional observations from the Hadza microbiota and their lifestyle and environment, …

An Explorative Case-Study Of The Use Of Peerwise To Foster Student Centred, And Peer Supported, Learning In A First-Year Business Module, Anna Dynan, Barry J. Ryan
Irish Business Journal
Peer based learning is not a new concept in business studies in higher education; however, the integration of technology enabled and asynchronous peer learning has limited reported use and even less evidence based evaluation. In this explorative case study, the online tool PeerWise was used to scaffold and support an asynchronous peer-learning environment for a group of 212 first year business studies students. Students were required to create, answer and rate multiple choice questions on topics aligned to their curriculum within the peer constructed PeerWise question database. While there was no statistically significant correlation between PeerWise engagement and final module …

Shirley Jackson’S “The Lottery” And Holocaust Literature, Michael Robinson
Shirley Jackson’S “The Lottery” And Holocaust Literature, Michael Robinson
Professional and Public Writing Faculty Publications
Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” has been notorious since its first publication in 1948, but rarely, if ever, has it been read in light of its immediate historical context. This essay draws on literature, philosophy, and anthropology from the period to argue that Jackson’s story, which scholars have traditionally read through the lens of gender studies, invokes the themes of Holocaust literature. To support this argument, the essay explores imaginative Holocaust literature from the period by David Rousset, whose Holocaust memoir The Other Kingdom appeared in English translation in 1946, anthropological discourse from the period on scapegoating and European anti-Semitism, and …
Faculty Teaching And Librarian-Facilitated Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis
Faculty Teaching And Librarian-Facilitated Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
This qualitative study explores the impact of a workshop on collaborative research assignment design that brought together an interdisciplinary group of faculty in a librarian-facilitated community of practice. Faculty participants attended the workshop, revised and implemented their assignments, and completed a follow-up interview. Themes that emerged reflected shifts in faculty teaching practices, including increased scaffolding, clarity, modeling, student collaboration, and opportunities for authentic learning. Gaining insight into how faculty approach the work of teaching directly impacts library instruction and how librarians can contribute to communities of practice among teachers in the academy.

Today, humans as a species face significant global challenges: meeting the needs of an ever expanding human population for food and energy from limited land, water and other resources; finding ways to counter rapidly changing pathogens that become resistant to current treatments; adapting to climate change that is linked to more frequent flooding, drought, wildfires and temperature extremes; and reversing the deterioration of ecosystems associated with human induced alterations of the environment. Owing to its resilience and robustness, life in one form or another will likely persist, but it is unknown by what mechanisms or in what forms. Much is …
