“Ich Bin Ein Betweener”: The Concept Of The Existential Migrant In Steffen Möller’S Travel Narratives About Poland, Jakub Kazecki Jan 2019

“Ich Bin Ein Betweener”: The Concept Of The Existential Migrant In Steffen Möller’S Travel Narratives About Poland, Jakub Kazecki

All Faculty Scholarship

This article discusses the German-Polish author Steffen Möller and his self-presentation as a “betweener” in the works Viva Polonia (2008), Expedition to the Poles (2012), and Viva Warszawa (2015). The article construes it as a central concept of Möller’s narratives about Poland by connecting it with Greg Madison’s phenomenon of “existential migration.” The analysis of the motif of train travel in Möller’s oeuvre points out the author’s rendering of Marc Augé’s “non-places” as spatial zones of transition and heterotopias, which accommodate shifting senses of time and place, allow for the subverting of established social hierarchies and narrative structures, and are …

Defining A Practicum In Applied Linguistics Through Duoethnography To Comply With The National Postgraduate Audit Culture In Mexico, Troy Crawford, Edgar Emmanuell Garcia-Ponce

The Qualitative Report

In this article, we attempt to conciliate the issues of an audit culture that surround the postgraduate programs in Mexico through the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) with highly flexible definition of the course using duoethnography. The goal being to satisfy national requirements yet retain freedom in applied research in English as a foreign language teaching. This is done through an intense process of data recycling with the student participants in a semester-long analysis. This analysis also involved a continuous editing and reediting process to try and connect all the participants’ autobiographical dots of the course to arrive …

The Manokwari Declaration: Challenges Ahead In Conserving 70% Of Tanah Papua’S Forests, Rodrigo Cámara-Leret, Andre Schuiteman, Timothy Utteridge, Gemma Bramley, Richard Deverell, Larry A. Fisher, Jonathan Mcleod, Lee Hannah, Patrick Roehrdanz, Timothy G. Laman, Edwin Scholes, Yance De Fretes, Charlie Heatubun

Forest and Society

The Manokwari Declaration is an unprecedented pledge by the governors of Indonesia’s two New Guinea provinces to promote conservation and become SE Asia’s new Costa Rica. This is an exciting, yet challenging endeavour that will require working on many fronts that transcend single disciplines. Because Indonesian New Guinea has the largest expanse of intact forests in SE Asia, large-scale conservation pledges like the Manokwari Declaration will have a global impact on biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.

From Rigor To Vigor: The Past, Present, And Potential Of Inquiry As Stance, Elizabeth Currin Jan 2019

From Rigor To Vigor: The Past, Present, And Potential Of Inquiry As Stance, Elizabeth Currin

Journal of Practitioner Research

Over the years, practitioner research has been both marginalized and trivialized within the larger educational research landscape. This article challenges that exclusion by tracing the emergence and development of the inquiry stance construct. Understanding the origins of teacher inquiry can contribute to its cultivation and ultimately lend a necessary rigor—or better yet, vigor—to practitioner research. Indeed, inquiry as stance endures because it is far more than a best practice or ready-made technique. Deeply ontological and epistemological, an inquiry stance enables educators to transform their teaching for the sake of all learners in the face of an ever-changing educational landscape.

The Agricultural Deities Of Q ’Eqchi’ Mayas, Tzuultaq’As: Agricultural Rituals As Historical Obligation And Avatar Of The Cultural Reservoir In Rural Lanquín , Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, Yishan Lea

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

This study, based on fieldwork in rural Lanquín, Guatemala, discusses cultural continuity and the sense of historicity through agricultural rituals and worship of the agricultural deity Tzuultaq’as. The place, Lanquín, and the Q’eqchi’ Maya peasant farmers are situated within a two-fold tension and contradiction. Geographically remote in relation to the economic centers in Guatemala, and marginal in infrastructural development, while their cash crop harvests never fail to be effected by the fluctuations of the global market. From the eclectic stance merging both theories of cultural essentialism and constructivism, by juxtaposing the emblematic event of the anti-Monsanto Law movement in 2014 …
