Algorithmic Fair Use, Dan L. Burk Mar 2019

Algorithmic Fair Use, Dan L. Burk

University of Chicago Law Review

Legal governance and regulation are becoming increasingly reliant on data collection and algorithmic data processing. In the area of copyright, online protection of digitized works is frequently mediated by algorithmic enforcement systems intended to purge illicit content and limit the liability of YouTube, Facebook, and other content platforms. But unauthorized content is not necessarily illicit content. Many unauthorized digital postings may claim legitimacy under statutory exceptions like the legal balancing standard known as fair use. Such exceptions exist to ameliorate the negative effects of copyright on public discourse, personal enrichment, and artistic creativity. Consequently, it may seem desirable to incorporate …

The Effects Of Nild Educational Therapy On Reading Achievement, Brenda Louise Hout

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The current educational system in American schools is failing to meet the literacy needs of impaired readers in grades four through eight due to inadequate or delayed intervention programs after third grade, which fail to incorporate cognitive and metacognitive skills taught simultaneously over extended periods of time. This causal-comparative research study was designed to investigate the inclusion of these skills in individual and group settings in a pre-/post-test format, while controlling for the pre-test, using NILD strategies and methodology. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference in reading achievement existed between the two groups when …

The Unifying Theme Of The Mind Of Christ In Philippians Demonstrated By Paul's Use Of Rhetorical And Linguistic Devices In An Oral/Aural Culture, David Alan Posey Mar 2019

The Unifying Theme Of The Mind Of Christ In Philippians Demonstrated By Paul's Use Of Rhetorical And Linguistic Devices In An Oral/Aural Culture, David Alan Posey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Among the debatable issues arising from Paul’s epistle to the Philippians are questions concerning the structure, integrity and thematic emphasis of the letter. This dissertation argues that the “Christ Hymn” (2:6-11) is the central point of a chiastic structure of the letter, establishing the “Mind of Christ” as the primary and, thus, unifying theme of this correspondence. Four primary fields of research lend support to this hypothesis. First, rhetorical criticism seeks to understand the meaning of the biblical text through recognized persuasive devices utilized within first-century literature and speech. Second, linguistic studies, in its simplest form, examines the selection and …

Through a feminist disability studies lens, the focus of this a phen[women]ological study of the lived experiences of six educators from two different schools in Illinois and their perceptions of restorative justice, care, inclusion, and disability was to ask: How are educators making sense of restorative justice practices? What are the implications for students with disabilities? Five topics of significance surfaced, including (a) caring; (b) restorative justice and inclusion; (c) impact of technology; …

Transfer-Printed Gastroliths: Fowl-Ingested Artifacts And Identity At Fort Vancouver's Village, Emily C. Taber, Douglas C. Wilson, Robert Cromwell, Katie A. Wynia, Alice Knowles

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transfer-printed ceramics and other objects ingested by fowl provide unique data on the household production associated with a fur-trade center in the Pacific Northwest. Gastroliths are an indicator of the use of avifauna at archaeological sites, specifically those of the order Galliformes. The presence of ceramic and glass gastroliths at house sites within Fort Vancouver's village provides evidence for the keeping and consumption of domestic fowl, including chickens and turkeys. The presence and concentration of these artifacts, combined with documentary and other evidence, provide clues about household economies in a culturally diverse colonial setting. While ethnic backgrounds of the villagers …

"The Tyrant Father": Leslie Stephen And Masculine Influences On Virginia Woolf And Her Novel, To The Lighthouse, Anya Graubard

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

It specifically considers the effects of three male “tyrants” in Woolf’s childhood, including not only her father but also her two half-brothers, who abused her sexually. Analysis of the dynamics of these relationships provides insight into Woolf’s lifelong battle with mental illness and helps us to understand the complicated relationships she had as an adult with men and women.

In her letters, diaries, and memoir essays, Woolf reveals how she drew from her own experiences of childhood to write her most famous novel, To …

The Pastiche Of Discrepant “Minoritarian” Voices In Kiran Desai’S The Inheritance Of Loss, Aparajita Nanda Mar 2019

The Pastiche Of Discrepant “Minoritarian” Voices In Kiran Desai’S The Inheritance Of Loss, Aparajita Nanda

English

Cosmopolitanism may be described as the philosophy of one who is “free from local, provincial, or national ideas, prejudices, or attachments; at home all over the world” (The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia). The conceptual content of the word presumes universality, a free-moving entity without any deterrent ethnic or cultural moorings, happy in an unquestioning sense of belonging to the world, a citizen of a world “ethically synchronous and politically symmetrical” (Pollock et al. 582). The historical realities of the twentieth century, however, have marked our world as one of almost constant movement and migration, both forced and elective. It has …

The Effect Of Alcohol And Bitterness Levels On Brewing Yeast Viability, Nichole Elizabeth Bryant Mar 2019

The Effect Of Alcohol And Bitterness Levels On Brewing Yeast Viability, Nichole Elizabeth Bryant

Master's Theses

Two of the most popular beer styles within the craft brewing industry are India Pale Ales (IPA’s) and those with high alcohol by volume (ABV). Production of these styles requires high gravity fermentation and high amounts of bittering hops in order to reach the required values for ABV and International Bitterness units (IBU) respectively. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of high gravity fermentation and high IBU levels on yeast viability and repitching cycles.

An initial experiment on high gravity fermentations was done in order to assess the effects this variable had alone. Successive five day …

[Dis]Integration: Second-Order Diversity And Schools, Anders Walker Mar 2019

[Dis]Integration: Second-Order Diversity And Schools, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

This article challenges the prevailing definition of diversity in schools. Borrowing from legal theorist Heather Gerken, it argues that diversity is best understood not simply as a rationale for creating integrated spaces, but also [dis]integrated ones, places where minority students and faculty can occupy majority positions, and are able to exercise majority control. Such spaces serve legitimate pedagogical goals that are different from those associated with statistical integration, and therefore warrant consideration by courts tasked with reviewing the use of race in university admissions.

"It Lurks In The Saying, Not What's Being Said": Possible Worlds Theory And Gender Performativity In Marina Carr's Low In The Dark, Andie Madsen Mar 2019

"It Lurks In The Saying, Not What's Being Said": Possible Worlds Theory And Gender Performativity In Marina Carr's Low In The Dark, Andie Madsen

University Honors Theses

Low in the Dark by Irish playwright Marina Carr is an absurdist play that focuses heavily on concepts of gender as performance. It does so mainly through role-playing scenes in which two same-gender characters reenact a heterosexual relationship. These scenes can be tied to Marie-Laure Ryan’s conceptions of the four kinds of alternative possible worlds (APWs) within possible worlds theory: fantasy, wish, obligation, and knowledge. An analysis of the play’s role-playing scenes in conjunction with Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory and these four types of APW reveals the constructed-ness of gender norms within the work, which further calls into question …
