Putting On A Show; Collecting, Exhibiting, And Performing Wayang At The Tropenmuseum From Colonial Times Until The Present, Sadiah Boonstra

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam has a rich history in collecting, exhibiting, and presenting wayang performances. This paper traces this history of collection, exhibition, and performance practice of wayang at the Colonial Institute, from 1950 known as Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from colonial times until the present. It demonstrates the entanglement of colonial and postcolonial power structures, collection, and exhibition legacies of the colonial past. The paper will show that from the moment wayang puppets entered the museum’s collection there has been continuous interaction between collecting and exhibition practices and performance practices. The emphasis on tangible elements of performance practice …

"Elimination Of Culture Based Discrimination Against Women In Indonesia: An Assessment Of The Implementation Of State Parties’ Obligations Under Article 5(A) Of The Women’S Convention", Widya Naseva Tuslian

Indonesia Law Review

The notion of cultural relativism has always been a fundamental challenge to upholding human rights values, especially regarding gender mainstreaming and the equality of both sexes. In this sense, there is a view that cross-cultural moral values are not acceptable given thecultural traits that produce their own modes of thinking and ideology. It is thus understandable that Article 5(a) of the Women’s Convention (i.e.,The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women), which is the only provision in international law that seeks to modify cultures that prejudice women, will deal with constant hurdles in countries like Indonesia …

Along with that, disruption era, a period filled with changes caused by new innovations, which results in instability, during the last decade has affected various lines of life including museums. This paper discusses the change of visitors’ point of view on collection and the strategy to invite the public so that they are willing to visit museums …

Hulu Ke Hilir: Jaringan Dan Sistem Perniagaan Sungai Kerajaan Srivijaya, Asyhadi Mufsi Sadzali Apr 2019

Hulu Ke Hilir: Jaringan Dan Sistem Perniagaan Sungai Kerajaan Srivijaya, Asyhadi Mufsi Sadzali

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The Kedukan Bukit inscription was written in 682 AD. It is considered as the oldest inscription related to the kingdom of Srivijaya and an authentic proof of the advanced maritime culture of Srivijaya. This argument is supported by the fact that, geographically, Sumatra is endowed with hundreds of large and small rivers that have generated abundant natural resources from its upstream to downstream areas. Srivijaya must have utilized these natural conditions to facilitate the distribution of its trade commodities— pepper, camphor, resin, and gold—from the upstream regions (flowing through countless tributaries to the main rivers) to the coastal areas, and …

Casualties Of War? Refining The Civilian-Military Dichotomy In World War I, Eric Grube Apr 2019

Casualties Of War? Refining The Civilian-Military Dichotomy In World War I, Eric Grube

Madison Historical Review

Throughout the First World War, newspapers around the world mocked the British state for its lavish spending on captured German officers kept at Donington Hall, a refurbished English estate. Why was this camp such a controversial space of perceived decadence? I argue that its comforts seemed to linger from an earlier era, one in which military men exuded genteel civility as integral to their supposedly heroic service. The British state essentially enabled such treatment, and the public decried this space for sustaining the anachronism of aristocratic privilege in the face of a globalized total war. However, the German inmates expected …

Don’T Talk About Your Fallout Shelter: Civilian Perceptions Of Threat And Structural Responses During The Cold War In Regina, Saskatchewan Between 1958 And 1963, Julie Mushynsky Apr 2019

Don’T Talk About Your Fallout Shelter: Civilian Perceptions Of Threat And Structural Responses During The Cold War In Regina, Saskatchewan Between 1958 And 1963, Julie Mushynsky

Canadian Military History

During the Cold War, the Canadian government initiated a civil defence campaign urging private citizens to construct shelters to protect themselves from the effects of nuclear fallout. Historians have argued that Canadians did not prepare for a nuclear attack and that the fallout shelter campaign failed. Historical estimates on shelter construction are problematic. Like many Cold War facilities and structures, fallout shelters were constructed in secret and concealed. Using archival research, oral histories and data from a survey of private fallout shelters in Regina, Saskatchewan, this article argues that Regina’s citizens did not ignore the campaign and built a range …

Goblin: Microaffirmations, A Theory Of Communication, Haunt Pitcher

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

This project is a study of nonbinary identity and the ways in which nonbinary individuals find validation from nonbinary communities, cisgender friends and family members, and themselves. It advances a theory of “microaffirmations,” or small acts that can have a large, positive impact on nonbinary individuals, with a significant focus on humor, language, and other forms of communication. Research for this project was conducted through a series of personal interviews with friends and families, as well as analyzing the author’s own experiences as a nonbinary individual. These interviews and experiences are filtered through lenses of feminist theory, trans theory, and …

Art Therapists' Work With Textiles, Sarah Potter Apr 2019

Art Therapists' Work With Textiles, Sarah Potter

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This research project aims to explore how art therapists use textiles in clinical practice and personal artmaking and to learn about the perceived benefits and challenges of this type of work. The study utilizes a Qualtrics survey, with 70 participants, and a focus group methodology, with 4 art therapists. Through the analysis of the participants’ conversations, artwork, and survey information, emergent themes were identified related to examining biases of gender identity, challenges related to considerations of time, the repetitive and slow nature that are particular mindful qualities of textile making, potentially heightened benefits of textile work with children and adolescents, …

Of Raids And Returns: Sex Work Movement, Police Oppression, And The Politics Of The Ordinary In Sonagachi, India, Simanti Dasgupta

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Drawing on ethnographic work with Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a grassroots sex worker organisation in Sonagachi, the iconic red-light district in Kolkata, India, this paper explores the politics of the detritus generated by raids as a form of state violence. While the current literature mainly focuses on its institutional ramifications, this article explores the significance of the raid in its immediate relation to the brothel as a home and a space to collectivise for labour rights. Drawing on atyachar (oppression), the Bengali word sex workers use to depict the violence of raids, I argue that they experience the raid …

From The Basement To The Gallery: Visible Storage At The Metal Museum, Kimberly Rebecca Bradshaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis details the curation and installation of a Visible Storage exhibition at the Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Between 2015 and 2017, over one hundred objects were moved out of basement storage and into a dedicated gallery in order to address preservation concerns and increase the visibility and educational capacity of the Metal Museum’s permanent collection, which includes contemporary sculpture, vessels, and jewelry as well as historic metalwork. The thorough inventory that accompanied the project resulted in updated catalog records that were used to launch an open-access online database that made the permanent collection accessible to both on- and …

Choice Mums And Children’S Education. Does Feminism Matter? A Qualitative Study, Ana Bravo-Moreno Apr 2019

Choice Mums And Children’S Education. Does Feminism Matter? A Qualitative Study, Ana Bravo-Moreno

The Qualitative Report

The aim of this article is to analyse and compare the experiences of self-labelled feminist and non-feminist women who have consciously chosen to be single mothers. This article contributes to the literature by providing a Spanish context to the experiences of single mothers by choice. Scant research currently exists on the specific characteristics of this type of family and on the influence of gender composition. Furthermore, no research has been conducted on the comparison between feminist and non-feminist single mothers by choice and how their different perspectives may affect their children’s education. The principal argument of this paper is based …
