Human-Animal Bonding In Animal-Assisted Interventions In Counseling, Ariann Evans Robino, Virginia Buechener-Maxwell

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Animal-assisted interventionists incorporating an animal into clinical practice must harness the human–animal bond for therapeutic benefit. Therapists have a duty to understand the complex relational processes occurring in this modality (Stewart, Chang, Parker, & Grubbs, 2016). This paper describes the results of a preliminary study exploring the bonding and attachment processes in animal-assisted interventions in counseling (AAI-C).

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa Jul 2019

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa

Publications

Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy has influenced twenty-first century Spanish noir, especially Dolores Redondo’s Baztán Trilogy and Eva García Sáenz de Urturi’s White City Trilogies. Larsson’s novels put mysoginy and its violent consequences at the center of noir and provided the development of constitutional rights as the solution to the problem. Following the logic of Western literature, all these texts use myths to make sense of modern problems. Pre-Christian mythology is presented as the root of contemporary evil acts. The novels warn their readers that the return to an ahistorical past and magic brings abomination and inordinate pain. In the …

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of The Mclean County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council Using Design Sociology, Jalisa Holifield Jul 2019

Analyzing The Effectiveness Of The Mclean County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council Using Design Sociology, Jalisa Holifield

Student Research – Stevenson Center

The standards of criminal justice structure and organization are discussed and debated from many positions. The limitations and inefficiencies of a hierarchical and bureaucratic system greatly hinder the possibilities of effective communication and collaboration within it. To address these unique issues Design Sociology (DS) can be applied.

Design Sociology (DS) inspires positive social change by approaching research through an action or applied research method. These methods center the end user’s perspective and have the potential to reimagine processes that produce unfavorable results for the majority of users. Concepts of DS can be applied to any institution or organization, especially to …

Violence Implicit In Hijab Suppression Laws In Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, And France Under The Cedaw Framework, Jordan Elizabeth Pahl Jul 2019

Violence Implicit In Hijab Suppression Laws In Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, And France Under The Cedaw Framework, Jordan Elizabeth Pahl

Washington International Law Journal

This Comment examines three instances of laws banning hijab, the headscarf worn by many Muslim women. These laws, as enacted in Soviet Uzbekistan, France, and Tajikistan provide justifications for violence against women on a number of levels and, as such, violate the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The stigmatization of Muslim women these laws perpetuate result in women’s lack of access to work and education as guaranteed by CEDAW, and also act as a catalyst for violence against women who violate these laws. This paper argues that hijab suppression laws violate CEDAW …

Communities Of Consumption On The Southeastern Mesoamerican Border: Style, Feasting, And Identity Negotiation In Prehispanic Northeastern Honduras, Whitney Annette Goodwin Jul 2019

Communities Of Consumption On The Southeastern Mesoamerican Border: Style, Feasting, And Identity Negotiation In Prehispanic Northeastern Honduras, Whitney Annette Goodwin

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Prehispanic northeastern Honduran communities were situated at the border between southeastern Mesoamerica and lower Central America. Previous studies of pottery style suggest that local groups shifted their affiliation from north to south at the end of the Classic period (ca. AD 1000). This study examines the contexts in which pottery, as a medium for style, was used, and how the food people prepared, stored, or served in these vessels offers a perspective complementary to pottery style for understanding how identity was actively negotiated in this region. In this view, other parts of the foodways system – the foods chosen to …

Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick Jul 2019

Theory And The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: Inquiry And Practice With Intention, Nancy L. Chick

Faculty Publications

Theory in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is the conceptual basis for the practice of SoTL—or, more precisely, the conceptual bases for the practices of SoTL—as well as the bodies of knowledge, methodological assumptions, and explanations of phenomena that are deployed (explicitly or implicitly) from a range of contexts within SoTL. Put another way, theory is thinking on a meta level, a metacognitive move in which practitioners become aware, critical, and intentional of how and why they are doing their practice. It involves taking stock of the existing conversations to move beyond definitions, to critically evaluate gaps and …

The researcher determined the degree of perceived spiritual growth …

Paying It Forward Or Giving Back?: Women’S Sharing Networks In Siberia, John P. Ziker, Karen S. Fulk Jul 2019

Paying It Forward Or Giving Back?: Women’S Sharing Networks In Siberia, John P. Ziker, Karen S. Fulk

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Subsistence food sharing in Ust’-Avam (Taimyr Region, Russian Federation) is analyzed in light of Arctic research on sharing and current debate. Cultural traditions such as food sharing practices are widespread across indigenous communities in the Arctic and are arguably fundamental to the sustainability of indigenous Arctic cultures and their ability to buffer against environmental disequilibrium. Sharing diaries from 10 respondents over 12 weeks in August and October 2001, describe 162 distributions among 69 household dyads. Independent variables, including household relatedness, reciprocal sharing, and interaction effects, influence the documented food sharing pattern. Economic need and social association also influence sharing. Indicators …

Biology, Intention, Labour: Understanding Legal Recognition Of Single Motherhood In India, Saptarshi Mandal Jul 2019

Biology, Intention, Labour: Understanding Legal Recognition Of Single Motherhood In India, Saptarshi Mandal

Socio-Legal Review

In recent years, the state's conception of parenthood, giving priority to the father in the child's public identification, has been challenged before the courts in multiple ways. The cases are sociologically significant for they capture emerging modes of parenthood outside the patriarchal family model. But more importantly, the article argues, the terms on which identification through father is dispensed with in these cases show the judicial regard for the social. The "social" phenomenon of single motherhood in India encompasses a much broader set of mothers than how the statutory law imagines this category. In addition to mothers of "illegitimate" children, …

Conceptualising Children's Rights In Digital Spaces: Emerging Issues And Challenges, Aratrika Choudhuri Jul 2019

Conceptualising Children's Rights In Digital Spaces: Emerging Issues And Challenges, Aratrika Choudhuri

Socio-Legal Review

The transnational and ostensibly age-blind digital spaces, facilitating new socio-cultural interconnections, recasting of identities, and commiserations of creative output, posits a distinctive set of opportunities, benefits and risks for present-day "digital natives". This paper seeks to transcend mainstream protectionist rhetoric framing conceptualizations of children 's rights in digital spaces, and to proffer more empowering, holistic and inclusive approaches towards effectuating their virtual citizenship. By undertaking interdisciplinary analyses, this paper seeks to delineate a sound normative and epistemological framework that conceptualizes digital spaces as actuating children 's rights. Further, this paper seeks to examine the key issues and challenges in realizing, …

School of Public Health Faculty Research

We aim to examine temporal trends of orthopedic operations and opioid-related hospital stays among seniors in the nation and states of Oregon and Washington where marijuana legalization was accepted earlier than any others. As aging society advances in the United States (U.S.), orthopedic operations and opioid-related hospital stays among seniors increase in the nation. A serial cross-sectional cohort study using the healthcare cost and utilization project fast stats from 2006 through 2015 measured annual rate per 100,000 populations of orthopedic operations by age groups (45–64 vs 65 and older) as well as annual rate per 100,000 populations of opioid-related hospital …

A perspective oriented to humane and social values is adopted, formulating the challenges in terms of the impact of emerging intelligent interactive technologies on human life both at the individual and societal levels. Seven Grand Challenges are identified and presented in this article: Human-Technology Symbiosis; Human-Environment Interactions; Ethics, Privacy and Security; …

Common Worlds: Multi-Species Interactions At A Nature Based Preschool, Patty Born Jul 2019

Common Worlds: Multi-Species Interactions At A Nature Based Preschool, Patty Born

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines interspecies relations between preschool-aged children at a suburban nature-based preschool and the animals who reside on a “working farm” located on its grounds. Typical early childhood environmental education lenses regard children as a)separate from nature, in need of returning; and b) the sole subjects of interest, whose re/actions are the ones most worthy of attention. This work attempts to challenge the discourse of a child/nature/animal split by acknowledging the ways in which children are already engaged with nature and animals in their own ways. It acknowledges the animals present in a nature-based preschool setting, asserting their agency …

Duplications In Corneous Beta Protein Genes And The Evolution Of Gecko Adhesion, Tony Gamble Jul 2019

Duplications In Corneous Beta Protein Genes And The Evolution Of Gecko Adhesion, Tony Gamble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Corneous proteins are an important component of the tetrapod integument. Duplication and diversification of keratins and associated proteins are linked with the origin of most novel integumentary structures like mammalian hair, avian feathers, and scutes covering turtle shells. Accordingly, the loss of integumentary structures often coincides with the loss of genes encoding keratin and associated proteins. For example, many hair keratins in dolphins and whales have become pseudogenes. The adhesive setae of geckos and anoles are composed of both intermediate filament keratins (IF-keratins, formerly known as alpha-keratins) and corneous beta‐proteins (CBPs, formerly known as beta-keratins) and recent whole genome assemblies …

Resisting Gentrification: The Theoretical And Practice Contributions Of Social Work, Amie Thurber, Amy Krings, Linda S. Martinez, Mary Ohmer

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Summary

Gentrification is changing the landscape of many cities worldwide, exacerbating economic and racial inequality. Despite its relevance to social work, the field has been conspicuously absent from scholarship related to gentrification. This paper introduces the dominant view of gentrification (a political economic lens), highlighting its contributions and vulnerabilities, then introduces four case studies that illuminate the distinct contributions of social work to broaden the ways in which gentrification is theorized and responded to within communities.

Findings

When gentrification is analyzed exclusively through a political economy lens, researchers, policy makers, and practitioners are likely to focus on changes in land …

Split Derivatives: Inside The World's Most Misunderstood Contract, Dan Awrey Jul 2019

Split Derivatives: Inside The World's Most Misunderstood Contract, Dan Awrey

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Derivatives are the "bad boys" of modern finance: exciting, dangerous, and fundamentally misunderstood. These misunderstandings stem from the failure of scholars and policymakers to fully appreciate the unique legal and economic structure of derivative contracts, along with the important differences between these contracts and conventional equity and debt securities. This Article seeks to correct these misunderstandings by splitting derivative contracts open, identifying their constituent elements, and observing how these elements interact with one another. These elements include some of the world's most sophisticated state-contingent contracting, the allocation of property and decision-making rights, and relational mechanisms such as reputation and the …
