Becoming A Superpower: China’S Rise And The Belt And Road Initiative In Latin America, Garrett Bullock
Becoming A Superpower: China’S Rise And The Belt And Road Initiative In Latin America, Garrett Bullock
History Summer Fellows
Is China a Superpower? Will it become one? After half a century of establishing a strong international military presence, thriving economic growth, domestic/international political authority, and considerable cultural “soft power”, the PRC has emerged as a hegemon capable of competing in international geopolitics. Nevertheless, these questions remain unanswered. For this reason, this research explores what it means to be a superpower, whether China is or will be a superpower, and, importantly, what impact China’s rise has on the world. To do this, this research explores existing debates surrounding China’s current global status, the historical emergence of the PRC as a …

Mixing It Up: The Impact Of Episodic Introgression On The Evolution Of High-Latitude Mesocarnivores, Jocelyn P. Colella
Mixing It Up: The Impact Of Episodic Introgression On The Evolution Of High-Latitude Mesocarnivores, Jocelyn P. Colella
Biology ETDs
At high latitudes, climatic oscillations have triggered repeated episodes of organismal divergence by geographically isolating populations. For terrestrial species, extended isolation in glacial refugia – ice-free regions that enable terrestrial species persistence through glacial maxima – is hypothesized to stimulate allopatric divergence. Alternatively, upon glacial recession, divergent populations expanded from independent glacial refugia and often contacted other diverging populations. In the absence of reproductive isolating mechanisms, this biogeographic process may trigger hybridization and ultimately, gene flow between divergent taxa. My dissertation research aims to understand how these episodic periods of isolation and contact have impacted the evolution of high latitude …
The Past And Present Of Chinese Language Teaching In Ireland, Caitríona Osborne, Qi Zhang, Yongbin Xia
The Past And Present Of Chinese Language Teaching In Ireland, Caitríona Osborne, Qi Zhang, Yongbin Xia
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
China’s booming economy is indeed one of the main reasons for the popularity of learning Chinese as a foreign language (henceforth CFL). With this growing interest in CFL, Ireland is likely to be behind global trends as Chinese is not yet included as a State-examined subject at any level in the Irish schooling system. Chinese language teaching (henceforth CLT) began to develop significantly in formal UK schooling during 2004-2005 (Zhang & Li, 2010), whereas the earliest occurrence of CLT seen in the Irish education system was in 2006-2007 when two Confucius Institutes were set up in Ireland. During this time, …

“I Don’T Want To Look Sick Skinny”: Perceptions Of Body Image And Weight Loss In Hispanics Living With Hiv In South Texas, Jordan W. Abel, Omar Allen, Delia Bullock, Erin Finley, Elizabeth Walter, Phillip Schnarrs, Barbara S. Taylor
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Objective: Obesity is rising in people with HIV (PLWH) and Hispanics. Both HIV and obesity are associated with cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. Our goal is to understand perceptions of body image and lifestyle in Hispanics with HIV to adapt interventions appropriately.
Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 Hispanic PLWH and 6 providers. Purposive sampling selected patient participants across weights and genders. Interviews were coded and analyzed using grounded theory, comparing perspectives between patients with and without obesity, and patients and providers.
Results: Participants felt obesity and diabetes were “normal” in the community. Patients exhibited understanding of healthy diet …

Disrupting The Intergenerational Transmission Of Trauma Among Alaska Native People: A Conceptual Model For The Family Wellness Warriors Initiative, Lily Ray, Bobbi Outten, Polly Andrews, Katherine Gottlieb
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Increasing evidence demonstrates the life-long physical, emotional, and social effects of traumatic experiences. In recognition that many health disparities are driven by high rates of traumatic experiences, Alaska Native and American Indian people have created wellness programs that build health by first healing historical and lifetime trauma. Yet, many of these promising community-based interventions are not described in the health sciences literature. Southcentral Foundation’s Family Wellness Warriors Initiative (FWWI) was created by Alaska Native people, addresses traumatic experiences as the root cause of family violence, and builds on cultural strengths. The goal of this study was to build a …

Linking Late Paleoindian Stone Tool Technologies And Populations In North, Central And South America, Keith M. Prufer, Asia V. Alsgaard, Mark Robinson
KIP Articles
From the perspective of Central and South America, the peopling of the New World was a complex process lasting thousands of years and involving multiple waves of Pleistocene and early Holocene period immigrants entering into the neotropics. These Paleoindian colonists initially brought with them technologies developed for adaptation to environments and resources found in North America. As the ice age ended across the New World people adapted more generalized stone tools to exploit changing environments and resources. In the neotropics these changes would have been pronounced as patchy forests and grasslands gave way to broadleaf tropical forests. We document a …
“Down The Track”: Kimberley Indigenous Media Futures, Willi Lempert
“Down The Track”: Kimberley Indigenous Media Futures, Willi Lempert
Talking Heads Seminar Series
In this talk, I will discuss the increasing importance of future-oriented Indigenous representations within and beyond the Kimberley. Popular representations have tended to temporally slot Indigenous people into mythical pasts and suffering presents, while dispossessing their futures. These temporal imaginings and silences continue to have dire policy implications, as decades of deficit-discourse and imagery have exacerbated the passing of futureless Indigenous
policies of defunding and assimilation. Drawing on my years of collaborative fieldwork experiences, I will engage hopeful Aboriginal media productions in relation to the current rise of Indigenous futurisms scholarship and media, which have a vital role in decolonizing …
Faculty Members’ Experiences With The Implementation Of Flipped Classroom Environments In Higher Education, Fatimah Alebrahim, Heng-Yu Ku
Faculty Members’ Experiences With The Implementation Of Flipped Classroom Environments In Higher Education, Fatimah Alebrahim, Heng-Yu Ku
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Active learning is an instructional strategy that focuses on the active learning process by involving students with engaging materials and activities in the class which leads to higher order thinking and increases students’ performance. The flipped classroom is one of the latest models that allows more time in class for applying active learning strategies. This model focuses on providing a media lesson to the students that must be completed outside of the classroom and prior to the class after which the teacher demonstrates different activities related to the media lesson during class time. The purpose of this qualitative study was …

Anthropology Faculty Research
Background Termites are an important food resource for many human populations around the world, and are a good supply of nutrients. The fungus-farming ‘higher’ termite members of Macrotermitinae are also consumed by modern great apes and are implicated as critical dietary resources for early hominins. While the chemical nutritional composition of edible termites is well known, their microbiomes are unexplored in the context of human health. Here we sequenced the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene of gut microbiota extracted from the whole intestinal tract of two Macrotermes sp. soldiers collected from the Limpopo region of South Africa. Results …

Yes, Rasta! : Authenticating Rastafarianism In A Coastal Kenyan Context, Katia Iverson
Augsburg Honors Review
The following research seeks to describe, organize and understand the perceptions and interpretations of Rastafarianism in Lamu, Kenya. Those who identify with Rasta are categorized by beliefs, goals and lifestyle and these facets are briefly compared to traditional Rastafarianism coming out of Jamaica in the early 1930s and globalized Rastafari movements today. The role of tourism, Kenya's colonial and post-colonial history, and Islamic tradition in Lamu's Rasta movement are also taken into consideration.
The Catch-22 Irony Of Child Labor And The Urgency For State Intervention, Ka Yee Lau
The Catch-22 Irony Of Child Labor And The Urgency For State Intervention, Ka Yee Lau
Augsburg Honors Review
Child labor (CL) has been found to enhance substantially the poorest households' chances for short-term survival. CL could also - it has been argued - facilitate CWs' socialization and development of moral values and survival skills. This article aims to demonstrate that these short-term benefits are considerably outweighed by the corresponding long-term detrimental repercussions on CWs' health, education, and earning potential in adulthood. While the poorest households might strategically employ CL as a last resort to ensure their short-term survival, it is CL per se that maintains these families in extreme poverty through the impediment to CWs' human capital accumulation, …

Stuff White People Like...To Keep: Re-Appropriation And Whiteness In America, Trevor Schmitt
Augsburg Honors Review
This paper evaluates the effect of Whiteness on the re-appropriation of cultural traditions through the blog Stuff White People Like. It is the contention of this research that the dominant racial identity in U.S. culture appropriate cultural traditions to re-enforce its cultural control. The manner in which this process occurs is evaluated through the two separate cultural traditions of Yoga and Natural Medicine as highlight by the blog. The resulting conclusion of this research finds that Whiteness erases marginalized cultural tradition meanings through popular culture and consumerism in order to apply new meanings which are more accessible to the dominant …

Review Of The Self As Subject: Autoethnographic Research Into Identity, Culture, And Academic Librarianship, Emily D. Dileo
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Academic librarians have complex and numerous professional identities. We are researchers, teachers, artists, administrators and technologists. Many of us have advanced degrees in other fields, in which we may or may not remain active. We experience burnout and impostor syndrome, experience and confront racism in our workplaces, and are strongly affected by university politics and bureaucracy. In The Self as Subject: Autoethnographic Research into Identity, Culture, and Academic Librarianship, the authors tease out these complexities using autoethnographic methodology.
Fathers, Sons, And Monsters: Rousseau, Blake, And Mary Shelley, Joshua Schouten De Jel
Fathers, Sons, And Monsters: Rousseau, Blake, And Mary Shelley, Joshua Schouten De Jel
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Through their reading of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, William Blake, and Mary Shelley arrive at a similar formula for their respective texts: the mismanagement, neglect, and eventual abandonment of children by their fathers catalyses the development of monstrous progeny in Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818/31), Blake’s Tiriel (1789), The Book of Urizen (1794), and The Four Zoas (1795–1804). In particular, both Blake and Shelley pick up on Rousseau’s concerns about the mishandling of children’s bodies as part of contemporary nursing practices in Émile, as well as the way in which the vision of a self-led educational programme is continually undermined by the fear of …

An Alternative To “Rules” In Practice Approaches To Distinguishing Art Kinds, Larry Shiner
An Alternative To “Rules” In Practice Approaches To Distinguishing Art Kinds, Larry Shiner
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Numerous contemporary philosophers have invoked the idea that art is best understood as a social practice in order to distinguish among art kinds or to distinguish Art from closely related practices such as Design. Many general accounts of social practices and of art practices in particular claim that sets of shared assumptions or norms are a key constituent of practices. But some standard accounts of social practices interpret these shared norms with the concept of “rules” or “agreements.” I argue that the idea of rules or agreements is theoretically inadequate and should be replaced by what the philosopher of science, …

On Individual Participation Within Mass Litigation: The Case Of The Fairness Hearing, Nourit Zimerman
Akron Law Review
What can we learn from including class members’ voices in the process of approving settled class actions? How does the opportunity provided to class members to participate in a public hearing relate to the inherent tension between individualism and the goals of aggregate litigation? Employing a unique methodology for analyzing court transcripts and using original data, this paper provides a renewed and rich depiction of the fairness hearing—a public hearing mandated by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure—which is held before the court can approve a settlement in a class action. Situated both within socio-legal studies and mass litigation scholarship, …
