The Difference Denominations Made: Identifying The Black Church(Es) And Black Religious Choices Of The Early Republic, Kyle T. Bulthuis Jul 2019

The Difference Denominations Made: Identifying The Black Church(Es) And Black Religious Choices Of The Early Republic, Kyle T. Bulthuis

History Faculty Publications

Scholars of African-American religious history have recently debated the significance of the black church in American history. Those that have, pro and con, have often considered the black church as a singular entity, despite the fact that African Americans affiliated with a number of different religious traditions under the umbrella of the black church. This article posits that it is useful to consider denominational and theological developments within different African-American churches. Doing so acknowledges plural creations and developments of black churches, rather than a singular black church, which better accounts for the historical experience of black religion. In this piece, …

Natural Law And The ‘Resistance’: A Normative Approach To The Skywalker Narrative In The Last Jedi, J Gould Jul 2019

Natural Law And The ‘Resistance’: A Normative Approach To The Skywalker Narrative In The Last Jedi, J Gould

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The motion picture The Last Jedi involves important decisions and actions taken by the protagonist of the original Star Wars trilogy, Luke Skywalker. It will be argued that Luke’s narrative in The Last Jedi can be explored through analysing new natural law thought. In particular it draws on Robert P. George’s discussion of the good (human flourishing) to consider whether the opposition provided by Luke Skywalker can been seen as a successful form of opposition to restore public morality. The contrast between Skywalker’s morality and the behaviour of the First Order will be established. It will be argued that the …

Peninsula Medical School

Objectives To evaluate a county-wide deincentivisation of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) payment scheme for UK General Practice (GP). Setting In 2014, National Health Service England signalled a move towards devolution of QOF to Clinical Commissioning Groups. Fifty-five GPs in Somerset established the Somerset Practice Quality Scheme (SPQS)—a deincentivisation of QOF—with the goal of redirecting resources towards Person Centred Coordinated Care (P3C), especially for those with long-term conditions (LTCs). We evaluated the impact on processes and outcomes of care from April 2016 to March 2017. Participants and design The evaluation used data from 55 SPQS practices and 17 regional …

The Legacy Of Hosting Mega-Sports Events: A Twitter Analysis Of Leisure-Time Physical Activity Communication, Gabriela Baranowski Pinto Jul 2019

The Legacy Of Hosting Mega-Sports Events: A Twitter Analysis Of Leisure-Time Physical Activity Communication, Gabriela Baranowski Pinto

Doctoral Dissertations

Routine engagement in Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA) is associated with long-term health, lower mortality, and higher quality of life. Inspiring participation in LTPA is one desired benefit of public investment in mega-events such as the Olympic Games. Whether such inspiration materializes—and, if so, for how long—was examined in three studies that investigated a perception-action process at the level of the interaction between real and virtual environments. The influence of the real environment of the Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 was assessed via the virtual environment instantiated in the Twitter social network. Emerging dynamic communication about LTPA in three …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Reproductive Health Trainings Within The Apopka Farmworker Community, Alexandria Mickler Jul 2019

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Reproductive Health Trainings Within The Apopka Farmworker Community, Alexandria Mickler

Anthropology

Farmworkers across the United States face some of the highest rates of occupational injuries, illnesses, and accidents - including excessive pesticide exposure. Heightened exposure to pesticides has been associated with a variety of reproductive health challenges, including reduced fecundability and fertility, as well as detrimental effects to both fetal and child health - including preterm birth, low birth weight babies, and congenital and developmental abnormalities. In order to educate and empower farmworker women within the Apopka farmworker community, the Farmworker’s Association of Florida (FWAF) developed a reproductive health and pesticide safety training program. The purpose of this work was to …

Retrying Leopold And Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective, David L. Shapiro Jul 2019

Retrying Leopold And Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective, David L. Shapiro

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

They called it the crime of the century; in 1924 in Chicago two brilliant, well-educated, and wealthy young men kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy and killed him "for the thrill of it". Expert testimony was presented by several well-known psychiatrists and psychologists, but even with all their clinical insights, none could reach a conclusion about the causal relation between their disturbed childhoods and a violent senseless crime. In fact, the well-known criminal defense attorney Clarence Darrow made little mention of the extensive psychiatric and psychological workups, and the judge did not deal with it in his sentencing. A review …

The Influence Of Tropical Climate On Cognitive Task Performance And Aiming Accuracy In Young International Fencers, Nicolas Robin, Aurelie Collado, Stephane Sinnapah, Elisabeth Rosnet, Olivier Hue, Guillaume R. Coudevylle

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

This study examined how a tropical climate (TC) influences the cognitive and aiming task performances of young international fencers. The participants performed the tasks in TC and an air-conditioned room. In each session, they completed questionnaires evaluating affective states, fatigue, and comfort and thermal sensations. They also carried out cognitive tasks (simple and choice reaction time, attention, and vigilance tasks) and a motor task testing aiming accuracy with a sword while wearing protective clothing and a mask. TC, which was observed to decrease thermal discomfort, was revealed to decrease aiming accuracy and positive affective states. There was no deleterious effect …

Understanding Ptsd, Aggression, And Shame Among Post-9/11 Veterans, Rebecca Jill Zakarian Jul 2019

Understanding Ptsd, Aggression, And Shame Among Post-9/11 Veterans, Rebecca Jill Zakarian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Elevated aggression is frequently found among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD and combat exposure alone do not explain the reliable finding of heightened aggression among trauma-exposed veterans. Shame may be an important affective feature in this relationship. The present study examined the role of shame from a social hierarchy perspective in a sample of 52 combat veterans from the post-9/11 era. Correlational analyses indicated positive relations between shame, PTSD, and aggression. Trait shame was found to mediate between PTSD severity and physical aggression, but not other forms of aggression. For veterans within the context of a hierarchical military …

Osl And Ceramic Analysis At The Humphrey Site, Ryan Mathison

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The Sand Hills of Nebraska are a unique environment located in the west-central portion of Nebraska. This portion of North America has long supported human life. One group in particular that called the Sand Hills home are the Dismal River people. Dismal River is the name that archaeologists gave to a group of horticulturalists that lived in circular structures on the sand dunes, often near the rivers, in the Sand Hills. This group, while generally known through archaeology, also has a potential historic or ethnographic presence in the form of the Cuartalejo Apache visited by Ulibarri, and potentially mentioned by …
