Hand-Built Ceramics At 810 Royal And Intercultural Trade In French Colonial New Orleans, Travis M. Trahan
Hand-Built Ceramics At 810 Royal And Intercultural Trade In French Colonial New Orleans, Travis M. Trahan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
While trade relations between French colonists and indigenous peoples in New Orleans are well documented, there have been few in depth studies utilizing archaeological sites in the city to illuminate the ways in which such relations shaped the day to day lives of the peoples involved. This work has attempted to elucidate trade practices between these groups by utilizing archaeological data uncovered at 810 Royal Street during excavations from 2015 through 2018. A collection of hand-built ceramics typically associated with indigenous peoples found in French colonial contexts on the site may help explicate the nature of trade occurring within the …

Impact Of Humanized Anatomical Paedagogy On Psychophysiological Responses And Academic Achievement In Nursing Students, Hui-Ling Lai
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Our study is the first to explore nursing students learning experience regarding anatomical paedagogy on psychophysiological responses and achievement. The humanised anatomy course provided an earlier opportunity of death confrontation for students. This study suggests that anatomy using cadavers is an effective teaching method to improve students engagement with class.

Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson
Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
In the two papers that comprise this thesis, I will be discussing Bone Spatulate Tools (BSTs) specifically those made of artiodactyl humeri found within Chaco Canyon, NM. These archaeological tool types permit the investigation of androcentric biases by way of legacy data acquired using the Chaco Research Archive (CRA). By redressing these archaeological biases, I hope to resuscitate an understudied tool type and highlight their function and importance in Chacoan toolkits. In chapter two, I investigate women and gendered activities by examining Humeri Spatulate Tools (HSTs) that are found at Chacoan great and small house sites. In this study, I …

When I Die Bury Me In This: An Arts-Based Research On Human Death, Decomposition, And Body Disposition Methods And The Taphonomy Metaphor Of Our Personal Belongings, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson
Action Research Projects
This arts-based research project explores the connection between our deaths and what happens to our personal belongings. I researched body disposition methods and intertwined those concepts with objects found in unlikely places like auctions and the side of the highway into my art practice. Utilizing the a/r/tography methodology, I focused on the spaces between and embracing the rhizomatic connections that appeared through what ultimately was a very personal journey. I collected a variety of data using taphonomy as a metaphor for our personal belongings and as a conceptual framework. Methods of data collection including mind maps, informal surveys, visual journals, …

What A Choice-Based Classroom Teaches Students, Kathryn Beth Potter
Action Research Projects
This study is about the choice-based classroom philosophy of Teaching for Artistic Behavior. It investigates the outcomes for students in light of the cognitive possibilities of Elliot Eisner and Nel Noddings’ theme of care. I utilized the method of education criticism in order to gather observations from my own TAB classroom in combination with reflections on the development of strategies and structures within the classroom. Observations of student actions and conversations provided data that were evaluated to find evidence of Eisner and Noddings’ possible outcome. The data revealed that in a structured environment student choice was able to help students …

Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner
Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner
Doctor of Ministry
Metaphor studies have become vogue in postcritical culture among the scientific and socio-scientific communities, in advertising and in the political arena. In fact, advertisers and marketers for years have known the power of a resonant metaphor to change minds and hearts. Once relegated to the realms of literature and linguistics, metaphor studies today represent the cutting edge of research in nearly every discipline. However, the church and the Biblical Studies academy have essentially ignored this trend, still engaging predominantly in close critical analyses of texts and refusing for the most part to engage in popular culture.

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King
Stray and Feral Animal Populations Collection
Some conservationists believe that free-ranging cats pose an enormous risk to biodiversity and public health and therefore should be eliminated from the landscape by any means necessary. They further claim that those who question the science or ethics behind their arguments are science deniers (merchants of doubt) seeking to mislead the public. As much as we share a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and wild nature, we believe these ideas are wrong and fuel an unwarranted moral panic over cats. Those who question the ecological or epidemiological status of cats are not science deniers, and it is a false analogy …
Searching For Sustainable, Intergenerational, And Multiracial Coalitions On The Neoliberal Campus: A Case Study, Victoria Agunod
Searching For Sustainable, Intergenerational, And Multiracial Coalitions On The Neoliberal Campus: A Case Study, Victoria Agunod
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This case study tracks the repercussions and re/productions effected by the alt-Right agitator Milo Yiannopolous' visit to DePaul University's campus on his “Dangerous Faggot Tour” and the consequential riot he led through campus in 2016. Looking closely at the relational positionalities and responses of the student protesters, the university administration, and the antiracist student affairs practitioners who supported the protesters, the analysis seeks to answer how the neoliberal university strategically prevents coalition-building among marginalized students, staff, and faculty, especially when the matter deals with, race, racism, and antiracism. The study unravels the structural and rhetorical strategies of neoliberalism that the …
Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski
Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
The much-overlooked laws and lifeways of Indigenous people show that concepts of environmental sustainability have long been a part of the human tradition. By studying the Indigenous jurisprudence of societies that maintained these traditions into the modern era, much can be learned. Rather than making laws in regards to the land, the land itself was the source of the law, for the environmental laws were built around a relationship with the land.
Through most of human history, the western world had a similar relationship. However, the Holy Roman Empire’s interpretation of Biblical scripture, which at that time was law, forever …

Methods. We conducted five focus groups with an ethnically diverse group of English-and Spanish-speaking men and women, ages 20–67, residing in five underserved neighborhoods in a Southeastern U.S. city. Data analysis followed a thematic approach and iterative qualitative content analysis. Results. Participants expressed a desire for well-trained and caring staff who practice cultural humility. Conclusions. By applying the CCM's five-pronged constellation of cultural abilities, health care personnel could ultimately be more responsive to …
Students Of Size: An Exploratory Case Study On A Hidden Climate, Braelin Pantel
Students Of Size: An Exploratory Case Study On A Hidden Climate, Braelin Pantel
Dissertations
Colleges and universities often espouse values related to equity and inclusion for diverse students (Harper & antonio, 2008; Torres, Arminio, & Pope, 2012;). Student affairs practitioners are frequently responsible for working towards inclusive environments (American College Personnel Association (ACPA), & National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), 2015). An estimated 31% of college and university students are classified as overweight or obese (American College Health Association, 2007), yet body weight or size is rarely a consideration in work related to student equity and inclusion on campus. Limited research exists on the experiences of students of size in college and university …

Material Intimacy: Bearing Witness, Listening, And Wandering The Ruins, Miriam R. Rowntree
English Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, I consider the rhetorical ecology of architectural ruins, specifically those of natural disaster, as actors in a system of human and nonhuman intra-action that has rhetorical potential for material intimacy. I argue that ruins address the human in ways that elicit a response. The human response enacts a paratactic praxis, which I explore in my first chapter as a practice that creates series or lists that call on the reader or the listener to fill the gaps between entities and make meaning out of the resulting juxtaposition of words, phrases, or collections. In the second, third, and …

College Adjustment, Belongingness, Academic Self-Efficacy, Persistence, And Academic Success Among First-Generation College Students, Heather R. Highhouse
Dissertations
Previous research has compared the impacts of college adjustment, belongingness, and academic self-efficacy on first-generation and continuing-generation college students. However, the impacts of these factors on academic success (GPA) and persistence of first-semester, first-generation college students have not been investigated. The primary purpose of this study was to examine college adjustment and belongingness for first-semester, first-generation college students, with a focus on race and gender. This study also examined the impact of academic self-efficacy (i.e., course self-efficacy and social self-efficacy), college adjustment, and belongingness for academic success (GPA) and persistence of these students. The roles of race and gender in …

Measuring Cultural Integrity Through The Lens Of Transculturation: An Examination Of Cultural Support For Native American College Students, Craig A. Marroquin
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Native American college students have higher rates of attrition when compared to their non-Native counterparts. In previous studies, researchers have attributed the academic (un)success of Native students in a postsecondary setting to cultural conflict. In this dissertation, I used quantitative methods to examine culture-specific support mechanisms for a sample of 1,066 Native American college students through the lens of transculturation (i.e., social isolation, cultural reciprocity, and resiliency) and identified factors of support that led to the preservation of cultural integrity (i.e., maintenance of cultural traditions and preservation of cultural identity) and to academic success. More specifically, I examined the relationship …

Urban (Un)Planning And Social Vulnerability In The Context Of Rapid Urbanization And Data Constraints: A Quantitative Study Of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania., Sheliza Bhanjee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores intersections between vulnerability and urban planning in Sub-Saharan Africa, where distinct forms of urbanization are occurring and where there are significant data constraints limiting local studies and urban assessments in the region. The three studies which make up this dissertation offer methodological and theoretical pathways toward examining and measuring the influence of urbanization and planning factors on vulnerability of urban populations in the region. The first study is a literature review and examines existing literature for vulnerability conceptualization in urban environments, the notion of ‘urban vulnerability’, and roles of urban planning and related factors in relation to …
A Geochemical Analysis Of Tosawihi Quarries Chert Using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Bethany M. Wurster
A Geochemical Analysis Of Tosawihi Quarries Chert Using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Bethany M. Wurster
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lithic source analysis, or “sourcing,” is a geochemical compositional analysis of lithic materials for both major and trace elements. Sourcing analysis assigns lithic sources to geochemical groups according to distinct geochemical compositions, where unique elemental signatures represent separate lithic sources. In archaeological research, sourcing informs upon mobility strategies, trade and exchange networks, and lithic conveyance studies. While obsidian sourcing is a relatively reliable and popular technique, chert sourcing is more difficult and historically less successful largely due to variability in chert formation processes. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) offers a possible sourcing technique, and is non-destructive, as well as time and …

Tracing God's Hand In Redemption: Exploring Evidence Of The Imago Dei In Human Molecular Biology, James Don Johansen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This interdisciplinary dissertation examines how Imago Dei and the impacts and redemption of sin may be observable in molecular biology. It introduces the idea of biological redemption, where, in support of our Imago Dei mission and calling, our bodies can respond to environmental and spiritual factors with biological redemptive adaptations. This project does both theological and scientific assessment. It explores how God is engaged with individuals in community via spiritual social networks, where Christian communities act as an ecosystem in which individuals can thrive and undergo spiritual formation, living out Christian spiritual practices. The main question this dissertation addresses is: …

Bridging Social Capital Through The Techno-Subsystem: A Qualitative Analysis Of Gofundme Requests For Hurricane Relief, Monica Bixby Radu, Lisa Mcmanus
Journal of Family Strengths
Disaster planning and risk communication are not always effective in preparation for devastating storms, and families are left to pick up the pieces as they rebuild their lives. Social capital theory poses that social connectedness and bonds between family members and friends are especially important in times of need. Recently, requesting financial assistance via crowdfunding has emerged as an alternative method for seeking assistance after a hurricane. Drawing from social capital and ecological systems theories, we qualitatively explore how requests for hurricane relief are framed via the crowdfunding website, GoFundMe.com. Among our sample (N = 26), we find that …

Refugees often carry with them traumas and mental health issues, why may continue or worsen in their new resettlement country. Understanding refugee populations and their mental health needs is a critical endeavor to support them effectively during and after the resettlement process. Currently, there is a lack of research over this population's mental health and what kinds of interventions are most effective. Recently, the U.S. has resettled a proportionately high number of refugees from Burma or Myanmar, mostly from the ethnic minority group called Karen. The present study interviewed 16 Karen refugees who were receiving medical care or case management …

Logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine the relationship between research productivity and the research climate, as measured by 155 clinical faculty survey responses, in an Academic Health System in the Southeastern U.S. Subscales addressing the institutional characteristics of goals, culture, mentoring, network, resources, time, communication, rewards, opportunities, and governance were used as independent variables. The dichotomous dependent variable was whether clinical faculty were productive in research as measured by IRB protocols.
Results indicated that a positive view of the research climate for networking and resources significantly improves the odds for clinical faculty showing increased research productivity. The study demonstrated …
