“Poke It With A Stick”, Using Autoethnography In Research Through Design, Natalia Triantafylli, Spyros Bofylatos

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper follows the design and creation of an artifact called “Poke it with a stick”, a promiscuous lighting fixture that invites users to play with its tactile operation switch. This ongoing research investigates how autoethnography could be adapted in the context of research through design while support practitioners regarding the contextualization of their work. Autoethnography, an introspective exploration, enables the emergence of narratives that support the understanding of the tacit aspects of creativity. This ongoing research investigates how autoethnography, as a critical approach (Denshire, 2013), could adapt in research through design methodologies, opening up a space evoking self-reflection while …

Magic Lining: Crafting Multi-Disciplinary Experiential Knowledge By Changing Wearer’S Body-Perception Through Vibrotactile Clothing, Kristi Kuusk, Ana Tajadura-JiméNez, Aleksander VäLjamäE

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Our complex and rapidly changing world presents us with profound societal challenges, but also offers tremendous opportunities for new technology to respond to those challenges. Several recent EU initiatives have enabled participants from a diverse array of disciplines to engage in common spaces for developing solutions to existing challenges and to imagine possible futures. This includes collaborations between the arts and sciences, fields which have traditionally contributed very different forms of knowledge, methodology, results and measures of success. They also speak very different languages. Magic Lining is a collaborative project involving participants from the fields of e-textile design, neuroscience and …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Administration: Reports, Papers, Publications, and Presentations

In 2019, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrated its 150th year. That celebration involved reflection on the past, as well as planning the University’s course into the future. As part of this planning, UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green appointed more than 150 stakeholders — faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members — to the Nebraska Commission of 150 to envision how the university can best serve the State of Nebraska and the world for the next 25 years.

The N150 Commission was divided into eight subcommittees, each charged with creating specific elements of the campus vision. The subcommittees were:

1. Campus Community …

On Three Possible Applications Of Neutrosophic Logic In Applied Sciences, Including Matter Creation, Victor Christianto, Robert N. Boyd, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In the same spirit with the theme of last issue of this SGJ journal (“Ongoing creation”), this paper shortly reviews a plausible mechanism from Aether to become ordinary matter from the perspective of Neutrosophic Logic. We also discuss two other possible applications of Neutrosophic Logic, including a resolution of conflicting paradigms in medicine. We hope that some ideas as outlined herein will be proved useful in the near future.

Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena Sep 2019

Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena

The Qualitative Report

Despite the shift in attitudes in religious institutions toward homosexuals in the United States, there are some religions that continue to view same-sex behavior as a deviant and damning sin. For many, religious beliefs and values provide meaning and impact personal identity. Using autoethnography, I will explicate my own experiences with religious institutions and the ongoing conflict between religious beliefs and sexuality. I will discuss messages received from the Pentecostal church, family, and Latino community, and how these messages influenced my human development and emotional well-being. I show that internalization of the principles taught by the Pentecostal Church triggered a …

Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard Sep 2019

Polemic And Literature Surrounding The French Wars Of Religion, Jeff Kendrick, Katherine S. Maynard

Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Polemic and Literature Surrounding the French Wars of Religion demonstrates that literature and polemic interacted constantly in sixteenth-century France, constructing ideological frameworks that defined the various groups to which individuals belonged and through which they defined their identities. Contributions explore both literary texts and more intentionally polemical texts that fall outside of the traditional literary genres. Engaging the continuous casting and recasting of opposing worldviews, this collection of essays examines literature's use of polemic and polemic's use of literature as seminal intellectual developments stemming from the religious and social turmoil that characterized this period in France.

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Large mammals are at high risk of extinction globally. To understand the consequences of their demise for community assembly, we tracked community structure through the end- Pleistocene megafaunal extinction in North America. We decomposed the effects of biotic and abiotic factors by analyzing co-occurrence within the mutual ranges of species pairs. Although shifting climate drove an increase in niche overlap, co-occurrence decreased, signaling shifts in biotic interactions. Furthermore, the effect of abiotic factors on cooccurrence remained constant over time while the effect of biotic factors decreased. Biotic factors apparently played a key role in continental-scale community assembly before the extinctions. Specifically, …

Syndemics: Considerations For Interdisciplinary Research, Rosalynn A. Vega Sep 2019

Syndemics: Considerations For Interdisciplinary Research, Rosalynn A. Vega

Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this short piece, I explore how medical anthropology could be deployed through interdisciplinary collaborations in a way that is both theoretically rich and poised to positively impact health outcomes. In particular, I consider how research agendas focused on improving health care outcomes reveal certain limitations and underlying assumptions within the discipline. What types of methodological shifts might occur if we interrogate those limitations and assumptions? What are some alternatives? To answer these questions, I turn to the concept of “syndemics” as one example of how a human rights approach can transform the way we do anthropology for the betterment …
